Burning Wings

Recommended Posts

Zed jerked up in his cold makeshift sleeping bag, once again torn from sleep by the dreams of all that had transpired three days before. A sharp pain shot through his shoulders and torso, causing him to groan. Three days... Three days it has been since he fell... Three days it had been since he was betrayed... Three days it had been since he was punished for his "sins". Reaching back, he felt for the familiar soft, feathery texture of his wings, as he had done so a million times before.
And just like always, they were not there.
A pang of sadness swept through him, and was so great that his vision became blurred with tears. He didn't even do anything wrong. Yet... he was forced to suffer a life of mortality. Pushing the thoughts from his mind, he reached next to him for his spectacles and stepped out of his tent. Off to the East, the sun was just rising, birds were busy chirping their usual morning song, and the grass glistened with droplets of dew. It was a beautiful morning, but Zed had a hard time enjoying it.
There was a soft clink as his foot suddenly kicked what looked like a glass bottle, seeming to have a note inside of it. He picked the bottle up, wondering how it even got there. Who would want to send him a message? After a fair bit of struggling, he pulled the wooden cork from the opening and took the note out. Adjusting his glasses, he began to read...

Dear Newest Resident,
I must make it known to you that your sudden arrival into the Land of Equestria did not go as unnoticed as you might think. Ever since my guards pointed out a bright flash of light shooting past the moon, and the way you emerged from the wreckage, I have been keeping a close eye on you. So far, these past three days have been uneventful, and you don't seem to have any malicious intentions, but I must be sure of this for the sake of ponykind.
It has come to my attention that you may not know the geography of your current location, so I have sent a message to a few ponies, along with a beacon of your current location. These ponies should arrive around noon, and will guide you to Ponyvill, where I will meet with you in person and we can discuss the current situation.
Sincerely, Princess Celestia.

Upon reading the message, Zed blinked in utter confusion. Equestria? Ponyvill? Celestia? None of it made sense to him. However, he figured that it would be best to find out where exactly he was. After straightening up his camp a bit, he sat outside of his tent on a fallen tree log and waited patiently until noon...

(NOTE: Zed is not the "main character" of this story, just something used to get this RP started.)

Rhenn yawned deeply. It had been only a day since his last call out to deal with a small smuggling organization in Vanhoover, and was not in the mood to go out on another assignment. At least it wasn't anything more difficult than walking a long ways and escorting somepony to Ponyville. At least that's what he heard with his groggy ears.

It was quite nice outside that day, which encouraged Rhenn to hold his act up. He had somewhat of a reputation to keep, and the other newbie guards he was sent with were being nothing but slow and caused only delays; so that's why he left them behind to not complete their task. It's pro'bly nothin' I can't 'andle by myself anyways he thought to himself as he stopped to get a drink of water.

Rhenn spat out his water rather promptly upon drinking. "What th'-- Sparklin' water?!" he reacted aloud for nopony to hear. It indeed was sparkling water, and he suspected it probably came into his possession from one of the other guards who was a prankster at heart. Mumbling to himself, Rhenn put the sparkling water back into his saddlebag and picked up his spear.

Only a little bit more t' go, and then I can go 'ome and give a bad r'port on mah 'comrades' Rhenn thought with another sleepy yawn. He got on his way again, knowing that he could come upon his objective at any given moment now.

Zed yawned and rolled his shoulders, wincing at the sudden jolt of pain. Thirty minutes have come and gone with no sign of this princess's "ponies", and the boy was beginning to grow a bit impatient. Of corse, he did not know when noon was, considering he had no way of telling the time other than the position of the sun. He had lost his watch when he was first transported to this... place, so he was stuck with guessing. What exactly did this "Celestia" want with him? Of course, he knew why, but what did she have planned for him? He had been here for three days, and now things only seemed to be getting even more confusing.

He suddenly heard footsteps behind him, and stood up, glancing in the direction the sound was coming from. "Hello?"

A cloud floated away from in front of the sun as the Aerion guard moseyed along. The revealed sunlight was rediculoisly bright in Rhenn's slitted eyes, so since he wasn't the biggest fan of the light he squinted and wished for another cloud to blot the sky.

He heard a 'hello' spoken to him as he reached the top of a small mound, then responded in his firm voice under the influence of drowsiness "Aye, good day t' ya." Rhenn kept his eyes squinted even though it only restricted him from seeing exactly who was talking. "You wouldn' happen t' be th' pony I'm s'pposed t' bring on down t' Ponville, would ya?"

Rhenn saw nothing but a colorful blur, but undoubtedly noticed that this pony had somewhat of an odd body structure... Must be some deviant drag'n-child 'r someth'n. he tangentially wondered as he yawned yet again.

Zed squinted in the sunlight as the pony stepped into view, and he was nothing if not surprised. Celestia was serious when she mentioned "ponies". Ponies that spoke like people? This was definitely not something he was used to. He had spent the majority of his youth traveling the universe. And one thing he knew for a fact: The universe was full of surprises. He just was not prepared for this one.

"Um... I believe so. But, I'm not exactly a pony." He replied, approaching a bit cautiously. "Zach Edron Davidson. If you'd like, you can just call me "Zed", If it's too much of a mouthful." He said with a light chuckle.

Rhenn wiped a foreleg across his eyes to expel as much fog as he could. "Not a pony? Then what are ya? A diam'nd dog? Or someth'n along the lines 'f a..." He paused in surprise that about equaled Zed's initial reaction. Whatever this guy would claim to be wouldn't matter; The knowledge wouldn't trigger a single memory since Rhenn had no knowledge of Zed's species.

"Zach Edr'n Davidson, eh?" he repeated while scanning up and down the angel suspiciously with his fully-awoken senses. It may or may not have been slightly intimidating having an intelligent, fanged, and fully armed pony slowly circling around one's self, but at least the pony was breaking silence with a conversational proposition of some sort. "So if you was who I was looking for, surely you'll be hold'n a parchm'nt with Celestia's seal... Right?" Rhenn eyed Zed with no small amount of skeptical hostility.

Zed shifted a uncomfortably as the strange batpony circled around him, studying the boy up and down. He couldn't blame him. After all, three days before he had landed in this forest in a flash of light, who wouldn't be suspicious after that? Of course, he was more than a little intimidated, but it was not something he was not used to. He had been to plenty of strange places, and was used to getting suspicious looks. Then again, that was back when he still had his wings and was able to escape if the worst came to be. This however, was an entirely different situation. His wings had been lost when he was transported here, so even traveling would be a lot harder, much less trying to escape.

"Oh, you mean the letter? It's sitting right there by the log." He said, pointing to the fallen tree he had been sitting on earlier, but he dared not move.

Rhenn moseyed over to the stump, though lacking in leisure and excelling in caution. He picked up the letter and began reading it aloud to himself in mumbles occasionally glancing up as if to make sure Zed had stayed put. He the time he spent reading the scroll seemed painfully long, but he eventually shoved the letter into his saddlebag.

"Just mah luck." Rhenn grumbled to himself. "Jus' when I thought I'd seen it all."

He approached Zed a bit more casually than before, but still obviously with his mind on business. "Alrigh', I'll be taken' ya t' Ponyville." he said "But first I wanna know jus' what you are, an' where ya came from!" he said while making a jabbing poke motion at Zed, though never landing contact.

Zed nodded and shrugged, not feeling as intimidated as he had previously. He could not help but feel a bit hesitant about telling his story, but figured it would get him nowhere if he kept hiding it. And again, he couldn't blame the batpony for being suspicious. "All right, I'll tell you." He said, taking a deep breath, thinking of how to explain it in a way that was understandable. "I'm an angel. Or, well... I used to be. I was banished from the Ethereal realm and sent to this world, but I lost my wings in the proccess." As if to emphasize, he reached back and underneath his shirt, feeling one of the scars on his shoulder blades. "That's... all I can tell you for now. I'll say more once we can trust each other a little more."

Rhenn held back a laugh that inevitably broke slightly through the barrier of his lips. So this kid thinks he's 'n angel! I reck'n that's th' most prepost'rous thing ah've ever heard 'n months!

Trying not to offend the 'angel' too much for comfort when traveling with him, Rhenn tried to tackle the subject calmly seeking clarity.

"So let's get this straight, 'feller... Yer no Equestrian, and you'se claimin' that ya fell from th' heav'ns and 're seekin' refuge over in one 'f our villages... Don'tcha think that'll raise some kind 'f unwan'ed suspici'n?"

It was a valid point, and he did seem quite doubtful that Zed could just wander on in to a foreign town without giving rise to a ruckus of some sort.

Shadow Cocoon, a changeling not apart of Chrysalis's brood but rather on her lonesome in the Ever free forest, read a letter explaining the details of an unusual visitor who crash landed three days ago and flew across the moon.

"Well, Whoopie do! I'll be working with an unusual pony and a crazy guy who apparently appeared like magic, just another day in Pony ville I guess," she laughed to herself as she pushed her magenta mane out of her face and blinked as she took off flying.

"Oh! Hello, I'm Shadow Cocoon, a changeling," Shadow greeted with enthusiasm as she eyed the Arieon, he was apart of Luna's guard and most likely thought of her as an enemy but even if he was a guard...well...he'd know she was not apart of Chrysalis because of her colour, she was not green but a dark magenta with a black body and the holes.

"What do we have here, an Arieon and some random crash landed species," she chuckled lightly as she approached, fangs bared and ready.

Zed noticed the laugh that the pony tried to hold back, and he rolled his eyes in response. Then again, to those who have lived "normal" lives, he knew that his story had sounded more than a little crazy. "Trust me, when I recieved that letter, I had a hard time believing that I had crash landed on a world full of talking ponies." At the next thing he said, Zed sighed and nodded. "I have no doubt in my mind that it would raise some suspicion. Why do you think I built this camp away from any civilized places?" He stopped for a moment, then shrugged. "Well, other than the fact that I have no idea where I am. Look, if you don't believe me, I can show you the scars on my back where my wings used to be. If that's not enough, then I can take you to the twenty-three foot-wide crater I made when I landed. Your choice." He was interrupted by the newcomer, who introduced herself as Shadow Coccoon. "Um, hello.." He said. Are there any normal ponies here, or do they all have fangs?

Rhenn nodded along to the 'angel''s claims, thinking about just how crazy his week had been and wondering if it would ever end. He opened his mouth casually to respond, but was more than surprised to be interrupted.

"Sweet Luna! A changelin'!" Rhenn's reflexes were to swing out his spear and jab it at Shadow Coccoon. However, he refrained from assaulting the dark magenta creature as it seemed to know something about Zed, which was confidential information to only a few as far as he knew. (Most other ponies would have just thought that the falling thing from the sky was a small meteor or something of that variety.)

The immediate conjecture that Rhenn formulated was that one of his 'comrades' had gone and tossed out one of the job description letters they were given, and that this changeling had the dumb luck to come across it. He seemed to have completely forgotten about Zed at this point in time: enthralled in the moment.

"A'ight, scum! I ain't lookin' for trouble, so why don' you jus' tell me how ya came over 'round 'ere?" Rhenn was keeping his cool best as he could, but it was obvious that he was far from fond of changelings. His steps were strategic and natural, never leaving him in a vulnerable position as he slowly approached the beast showcasing her infamously despised love-sucking fangs.

Shadow laughed. She couldn't help it. Shadow had expected this so it was lucky that she brag the small piece of parchment along with her.

"Look, sweetie I'm not with Chrysalis as you can clearly tell from my colours, I'm a magenta not a greeny blue

," Shadow paused as she stood up straight and shapeshifted into the guard pony, she threw hum the letter as she to begun to circle.

Zed backed up a bit at the batpony's sudden hostility toward Shadow Coccoon. Is this guy just overly cautious, or does he treat everyone with the same amount of hostility? When the changeling shapeshifted into what looked like a guard pony, he gawked for a second before shaking his head. Reaching underneath his glasses, the boy rubbed his eyes, beginning to grow visibly annoyed. "All right, can we just take it easy for two minutes please? This has been just as crazy for me as it has for you two."

"Chrysalis 'r not, I still see a changelin' 'ere..." Rhenn grumbled under his breath before swinging his spear at Shadow in order to force her back. He glared at the fake pony intently as he responded to Zed.

"Listen 'ere, bud! I ain't 'round t' make ya feel comfy, I jus' wanna go home knowin' that Equestria is clear 'f filth like this abom'nation! Ain't no way I'm lettin' another 'ally' hurt anypony!" he jabbed his spear at the air in front of Coccoon to keep her making a wide circle, completely disregarding the letter. "Jus' 'cuz they say they're a friend, doesn' mean they are. There ain't no proof she can give me t' make me think that she ain't scum like ev'ry other one 'f 'er kind!"

There was obviously an automatic schism between the two, which meant that either one or both had improper ideals. Either way, there wasn't exactly am atmosphere of kindness, but more of a sphere of tension. A very warm welcome to Equestria indeed.

Shadow hissed as the spear was continue ly jabbed in her face, he was rather stubborn and she hated the fact that this special some pony because he was apart of the guard could boss her about.

"You dare wave a stick at me, I for one attended the gala, I have helped out the Princesses in times of need and have looked out for lost ponies in the Ever free. I am friends with Zecora and I live in the Ever free!!!! Don't you dare call me an abomination with you horrible ruffian tongue, Arieon! I'm here to help so if you wish to go against the Princesses," she laughed as Shadow flicked her mane and stood still.

If he wanted to be rude. That was fine with her. If he wanted to go against the Princesses fine. However he did have a point, she'd need to change into something like a unicorn, that would be best.

Her coat changed to one of a light purple and her mane was white with magenta stripes.

"Zed needs all the help he can get, plus if he looks like this it won't do, many will think him as wierd and particular our of the ordinary," Shadow disregarded the warnings and her horn lit up, grabbing the sheets from Zed's make shift camp, she secured them together around his large form with a wig and created a hood in the process.

Now if he could just slouch and appear like a diamond dog or even something of the sort.

Zed sighed and shook his head, pulling off his glasses and polishing them on his shirt. "Okay, hang on a second. Changeling? Zecora? Arieon? What are those?" He asked, but waved the question off. He watched curiously as Shadow began to put together some sort of makeshift disguise, then flinching a bit as she wrapped the blankets around him and set a strange-looking wig on his head. "Okay, hang on a second." He said, shifting a bit. "You're not really going to make me wear this, are you? I look-" He was interrupted as a sharp pain seethed across both of the scars on his shoulder blades, causing him to wince and reach back. "Ridiculous..." He finished, his voice suddenly more raspy than before.

Rhenn mutters again sarcastically "Been t' a dance an' 's friends with a crazed lady 'n th' wood, won'erful. An' appar'ntly the world's worst design'r." he held back a laugh trying not to encourage Shadow Coccoon. He couldn't argue with her claims of innocence, just be skeptical of whether or not she was speaking the truth.

Rhenn turned to Zed, keeping an eye on Coccoon "I ain't in no mood t' go babblin' on righ' now, ask th' changelin' an' see 'ow much she knows. I'm gonna jus' wonder why Celestia would call ya somewhere that'd raise a ruckus 'f you were seen..." He began to head back into the direction of Ponyville, tossing some water back to Zed in notice of his gritty voice change "'Ere, ya should have this, it works. And as 'fer you--" he turned his head at Shadow Coccoon and glared intently. Nothing more.

Shadow growled slightly, she had been living in the Ever free for years, her tree house was magnificent and she actually had many many cloaks at home incase she was to weak to shapeshift. Which was never.

"Besides I haven't taken measurement otherwise it would have been easier, why don't you try?" She scolded him but trotted next to Zed.

"I will be happy to help, an Arieon is a bat pony and commonly found under our second Princess Luna, she raises the moon and brings us night.

Celestia is Equestrias main ruler, she brings the sun but can also bring the moon, I'll tell you the rest about her later.

Changeling. They shapeshift and feed off the love of other ponies, the evil Queen Chrysalis attempted to attack and take Equestria but she was not victorious.

Zecora is a zebra and a pony who lives in the woods, she's a tribal pony and very kind, she only speaks in rhyme," Shadow Cocoon paused and breathed in, that'll do for now it's enough information for the strange beast.

"What happened may I ask? You seem to be in a lot of pain, I don't know whether to take you to Zecora first?"

Zed just barely caught the bottle as it was tossed to him, but decided not to drink it just yet. If the stuff really did work, then he wanted to save it in case there came an event when he would need it the most. He listened and nodded as Shadow began answering his questions, which may have raised a few more questions, but he decided against asking. In his years of traveling, there was one thing he knew for a fact: Every realm had it's own way of functioning. Even though he had no idea how it was possible for someone to physically cause the sun or moon to rise, bringing about day or night, but at least he had somewhat of a better grasp on whoever Celestia and Luna are. At the Changeling's intervention, he shook his head. "I lost my wings when I crash landed here, and it's been bothering me ever since." He was about to deny her offer of visiting Zecora, but another sharp pain interrupted him, causing him to yelp.

"No no no, I'm not taking you to the Princesses in this state and your welfare must be looked after, you have crash landed and one simply does not wish to let a pony go on in pain," Shadow turned around from the trees and begun to trot away, she'd go TO Zecora with Zed whether the guard liked it or not.

Seeing as they would not be heading to the village she returned to her former looks and continued on the grass path towards her friend Zecora.

"Come along Arieon, surely a guard wouldn't leave someone in pain,"

Rhenn was less than pleased with this decision, in fact one might go as far as to say it aggravated him.

"Didn't ya read th' letter?! Celestia wants him 'n Ponyville, not some hollow'd out tree 'n th' Everfree!" he reluctantly trotted back to bicker with Coccoon "There ain't no way I'm lettin' you ruin mah task, I need t' take him back! Celestia 's more than capable 'f healing anyth'n!"

It didn't seem that he was being very convincing since Coccoon didn't change her mind or direction. Sure, Zecora was the closer option for healing, but this wasn't about that. Rhenn needed to complete his mission in due time. Zed would surly be fine on the way to Ponyville. "There ain't no way I'm goin' into Z'cora's hut. If y'all want t' get things straightn'd out, you'd best follow me t' where we should be."

Rhenn stood adamantly in spot, and didn't look like he wanted to take another step further into the Everfree.

Zed hesitantly followed Shadow, glancing back at the guard. "Um... I don't know if..." He stopped when the guard suddenly followed and began arguing, before standing fixed where he was. This... is not going as well as I'd hoped... He thought. He stood in between the two, rubbing his eyes in annoyance. He had half a mind to just follow Shadow and ignore the Arieon. At least she seemed a lot more friendly. But he did make a valid point; Zed needed to get to Ponyville as soon as possible. Then again, he did not know if he would last the trip, as the pain in both of the scars began getting even worse. After a moment, he felt something drip down his back, but he tried to ignore it.

The changeling snorted and turned around. "I for one do not want Celestia's so called hero to be wounded when she firsts meets him, imagine the pressure he'd have and then the effect on the rest of the Equestrian Nation!" Shadow slightly growled before sniffing the air, a sweet scent and she looked about before seeing the rags. A small growing circle was appearing and she stepped back.

"Zecora now, can you smell it?" She asked as she approached the strange creature and begun to lift up the rags.
