Character Summary:Butter Nut was born to the extensive Nut family. He was named after the Walnut variety, his parents, of course, expecting him to follow in the grand family tradition of being nut farmers.

However, even stubborn as a foal, he had other ideas. He discovered that there was a squash variety with his name. He bugged his parents every day for weeks to let him taste some, and one autumn at a harvest festival. He found that it was his new favorite food, unlike anything he had ever tasted, so he begged the pony tending the squash stand to give him some of the seeds.

That morning he planted the seeds in the small plot in the garden that his parents had encouraged all their foals to tend. A few months later he harvested a nice big squash, and from that squash made a variety of dishes to bring to his family's Harvest potluck dinner. Most of the dishes were disasters, too sweet, oddly seasoned, but his roasted squash was loved by all in attendance who tasted it. Awash in the glow of success, he felt a tingle on his flank, and lo and behold, his cutie mark appeared!

Since then, he gained a respectable portion of the farm and successfully farmed various squashes and gourds to local markets. His mock-cantankerousness made him a favorite with his customers from the time he was a young stallion, until his grandfoals were ready for their own pieces of the farm. Now, a local fixture at the market stall, he has cut back his hours to only weekend mornings.

Butternut is contrary for the sake of being contrary, and for this reason, as well as his refusal to farm nuts, makes him the black sheep of his branch of the family. But it's not a situation where his family dislikes him. His good humor and sly tricks make him approachable and friendly, but there is a slight distain for his chosen profession from the more "proper" members of his family. He is a particular favorite with the foals in the family.... he always has sweets for them, and tells them exciting stories from the past...and keeps them in check by pulling the odd prank on the ones who need a bit of a lesson taught to them.
