What things (if any) make you ashamed of being a Brony?

Normally, I would not at all be ashamed of being a part of the fandom. However, there are a few things about it that really irk me at times. First off, the arrogance of some people get under my skin. More than once, I find art or music from the fandom, and when someone offers their personal opinion about it, and either the artist or their overly devoted fan-girls jump on their case about it. Seriously, I once commented on a music piece and stated that some parts in the song get a bit too repetitive, and the artist literally told me... and I quote: "Dude, you really don't know *bad s-word* about music, do you? Go kill yourself. I don't have patience for ten-year-old trolls."

To add to this, my first experience with the fandom was not very pleasant as well. I once entered a certain room on a chat site that was for Bronies, and immediately they all began bashing on me over my username. I had "yolo" in it. Good reason to freak out on someone, right? So I changed my name to Alex the Angel, and they immediately accused me of god modding, despite the fact that they have absolutely no idea how the character works, besides the fact that he plays guitar.

I avoid that chat site, now.

Another thing about the fandom that bothers me is the explicit content. I'm not going to lie, I've drifted down that path as well, but I honestly believe it gives us a bad image. I've told people that I am a brony, and the first thing they say is "Oh! You're with that clan of horse (Insert offensive F-word here.)!"

Believe me, I truly love this fandom, and I feel at home here. It's just some people really make us look bad, and because of them I sometimes feel ashamed.

No Fandom is perfect. Anything popular enough is going to suck in people who are jerks- fandoms, religions, hobbies, sports, it really doesn't matter what it is, somebody out there is going to see that others find it valuable and get involved, sometimes for entirely the wrong reason.

I'd say the cool thing about ideal bronies is they are non-judgmental and take the lessons of the show to heart, being friendly, encouraging, inclusive, and forgiving people. In other words, the show encouraged them to be better people than they were.

I get embarrassed sometimes when people take excessive pride in romantic affection for fictional characters. It's one thing to say you like them, or would find them romantically attractive were they real, you were in that world, etc. but when you start acting as if you're dating or take great offense at how others speak about them, or call them 'yours', that's when it gets a little overboard.

I get embarrassed when someone cooes about how they are so much like Twilight or Pinkie Pie, it's really obnoxious, and no you aren't, stop trying to force an association.

I get embarrassed and ashamed of this fandom when people make themselves into their own oc and take it personally if people don't like the character X.x

When pony RPers take IC interactions so personally that they flip dog when you play with someone else. Or take it to near suicidal levels when your character says they don't love their character IC but then OOC they're like "HOW DARE YOU! You were my MATE!"

The edge lords we spawn

The level of pride some people have concerning their characters.

Bronies that still repress the idea of social interaction and friendships?

Bad fanfiction XD cringeworthy fanfiction,

Nothing makes me ashamed of either being part of a sub-culture or liking something of that sort because various people within that do things I wouldn't agree with. They aren't me and aren't representative of me so I have no reason to be ashamed. The things you spoke of are not exclusive to the brony sub-culture. Dim-witted people, bigots, porn (which honestly is fine, it's a thing that's going to happen as sex is a fairly prominent part of existence) are in every fandom. There are definitely things I wish people wouldn't do, but I can separate myself from that.

What you described is fairly endemic to every geeky fandom out there, they all have their share of jerkwards, fawning fanboys, cliques, obsessives, and socially inept, none of this is remotely unique to pony fandom.  It is just part of the baggage one has when they are ever a part of a fandom; my best advice is simply to avoid and ignore such people and focus on those that make the fandom a worthwhile endeavor.

Heh, so far I'm pretty sure that people have said they're ashamed of being a brony because of other bronies. Heh. Well, that's perfectly understandable. People get into MLP way too much, and that's certainly one aspect I dislike the most. I mean, just chill people, it's a TV show.

I dunno. Mostly it's the contempt people feel for people associated with being fans of the show. I certainly never tell anyone I'm a fan of the show and I never will. Heh. Purely because of fear of rejection and stereotyping I think. So yeah, that's probably the thing I'm ashamed about most of. Just the stereotypes people have of it. Not all of us are mad obsessed bronies.

Tough one. I suppose my personality makes it hard for me to be shamed of it.

While I don't broadcast the fact that i'm a brony IRL, if the subject comes up, I don't deny it.

If when discovering i'm a brony, someone says "Oh! You're with that clan of horse (Insert offensive F-word here.)!"

My response is usually something sarcastic like "Yup. I'm a horse &*$#er. Now shut up and get me another beer."

(Keep in mind, I hang out in the same kind of crowd that will have full blown fist fights one minute, and the next minute we're the best of friends. We curse each other out every time we see each other, looking like we are complete enemies, but if one of us truly needs help, we are there in a minutes notice.)

I like the show because it is fun. I don't really say that I'm a brony without someone saying something or asking me about it.

The only things that bother me are people that go deep on MLP-- like, Tolkien deep, and people with an extremely sassy or self-centered attitude.

I don't like to associate with people that take things too personally about MLP, or people who view themselves superior in the matter of MLP.

In fact, I don't like associating with anyone that take things WAY too personally, or view others inferior than themselves about anything or EVERYTHING. These kinds of people are everywhere-- bronies, weaboos, furries, etc.

I've dealt with this sort of crud a lot.

I don't feel ashamed to be one, I just feel uncomfortable that people like them do this to others or themselves.

Here in Canterlot, however, is where I find the least problems to deal with. I enjoy the Spam Stables, the Free-for-All RP, and sharing my creations.

There are good people here. I appreciate that a lot.

I can't argue with you there. This is literally one of the best sites I've joined.

Fortunately Blackberry spelled it out pretty spot on. All the stuff we don't like, or at least most of it... Is baggage in every fandom.

Of course!

If any fandom didn't have this "package" I would still have to assume that there is something wrong with it.

Honestly, I'd rather have this package than a "reputable" fandom that has a disturbing secret. What about you guys?

When people make OP OC's and refuse to admit it.

When people post very...grammatically incorrect, canonically incorrect, etc...stories and are stubborn about changing it.

When people say that they lovelovelove MLP and don't care much about it.

When people join the fandom for the sake of joining a fandom and don't know a thing about the fandom.

Yeah! Like this one guy who made this Pegasus OC... this OC is able to manipulate and create lightning, thunderstorms, energy, and cause strong gusts of wind.

He also lives a long time too, I think... and he always has this mean face looking down at you, and wears an eyepat-- Oh, wait... Crap.

What things make me ashamed of being a brony?

Well, the very thing that makes me a brony.

To be a brony, you have to like MLP. If you like fanart, music, fanfics, or just the show, MLP is at that center regardless of what it is you take interest in the fandom.

And ashamed I am. I mean, it's MLP. My Little Intended-For-Little-Girls Pony.

Ooooooo....!

Three years.

For three years I've felt this way. It's gotten better. But yeah, I'm not ashamed to admit that...well... I'm ashamed of liking MLP.

I don't hide it. I keep expanding my Funko figure collection. I just bought the Friendship Express DVD, despite owning Season 2 on DVD, just because I want to own a physical copy of the episode with the original Derpy voice. I'm a fan of MLP.

...and I sometimes hate myself for it.

Why couldn't I like something normal? Why couldn't I have become interested in vinyl records? Bird keeping? Stamps! F-ing stamps! I coulda become obsessed with Dr. Who, TMNT, Adventure Time, Regular Show, I don't know. Anything but My Little Pony.

But nope. It had to be that. And like I said, it's not just that I like it. I like Rick and Morty, but I don't keep buying merch, or any merch for that matter.

So that's the thing that makes me ashamed of being a brony. The fact that it's liking what could arguably be the last thing I ever wanted. I mean, it ranks up there with Barbie, Strawberry Shortcake, and Hello Kitty.

While I LIKE MLP, it's far from my obsession. My obsession is guns. If I don't have it, I want it.

Currently Eyeing the GM6-Lynx. It's only $14,000. I plan to own it by next years end.

That's a good rifle!

It even looks good.

Yea, there's just something about an Anti Material rifle Packed into such a small and lightweight form that is just... sexy.

Anyway, I suppose i'm getting off topic. I'll back out until there's something closer related to the topic to reply to.

This right here. I enjoy the show, like writing fan fics, and discussion, but when taken to the extreme, I feel like someone gets obsessed.

Yeah, the OC thing doesn't just bother me, it's just straight up weird to me.

Which is funny because over the years I had become my second OC (the one in my picture), which is why I do not use him anymore in any roleplaying or anything other than labeling stuff.

Which I feel like is the right and less cringy way to go.

I enjoy the show, like writing fan fics, and discussion, but when taken to the extreme, I feel like someone gets obsessed.

There are usually five kinds of people that act this way in an obsession for these kinds of things: They're either immature, autistic, very sheltered, mentally ill, or just plain spoiled.

These are likely people that are treated like special snowflakes, so naturally they're grown up to believe this as a fact; they're always right and/or they get what they want, no matter what.

I mean no offense, I have good friends like these, actually... but these good friends I just recently mentioned are responsible, mature people, thanks to their willingness to be good and their parents.

That's all I have to say to the matter at hand.

Gonna go somewhere else now, falling through the ground... my people need me!
