Unique Traits: Sombra has always had a talent with crystals and gems, learning how to use them through magic, and how to use them to make powerful weapons, Armour, and powerful artifacts of magic.

History: Sombra's history doesn't have a dark start, no sadly, it is one of good intentions going utterly and totally downhill...it would be easy to disregard his actions of cruelty as mere evil, but the worst pain of all comes from the betrayal of a once good friend.

Sombra was the product of  a unconventional marriage, it was a joyous marriage but uncommon, as his father was a proud and brave Crystal pony, a Prince at that, and his mother was a beautiful unicorn from Canterlot, the two found each other at a royal ball, and that blossomed into a deep love, and powerful connection for a time between the two kingdoms, it seems they themselves  emitted a powerful magic, that of true love.

The Crystal Empire was unique, it was powered by the crystal ponies themselves, who were special in that their empathy, and emotions caused prosperity to all of Equestria, their feelings powering an ancient artifact known as the Crystal Heart, which the Royal family guarded with a fever.

Sombra's birth was a joy to both his parents and his kingdom, and he too seemed to thrive in the warmth and love of the kingdom, and as he grew older, the youth was shown to hold a deep love for magic, and possessed a great talent for it as well; Equally as deep as his love for magic, so was his love for the very things that made his home special, Crystals! Gems, all that sparkled and glowed, and during his youthful studies he found a way to incorporate them into one another, in fact this was how he received his cutie mark.

During an extensive studying session, young Sombra formed a theory, if crystals could be used to amplify feelings like the Crystal Heart, perhaps they could be used to power other magic as well?  It wasn't a big experiment, but he wondered if you could store something in a crystal and have it used later...so with all his focus, he levitated a bright red crystal, and focused with allll his little pony might to embed it with a fire magic he knew... it was hard, and it took time but soon he FELT the magic flow out of him and into the crystal, embedding it with a flames warmth and glow, earning him his cutie mark in the process.


Had he stopped there, many things would not have come into place, but alas, ponies are beings of innovation, and Sombra threw himself into his work, it was a downward spiral as he grew older, simple spells forgotten, they needed to be complex, powerful! Simple tricks were not of use to anyone! His plan was to ensure that ANYPONY could use these crystals, not just unicorns, not just crystal ponies but all of Equestria!

Throwing himself into his studies, Sombra became to isolate himself, but with gentle coaxing from his parents, he was still somewhat social and of course still deeply loved his subjects; Things coming to a painful head when the young stallion lost both his parents to time  itself, and their loss seemed to push the Prince turned King, deeper into his work, he no longer greeted his subjects, just focused on his end goal.

 

The mistake he made was wondering if there was a way to lock these feelings of sadness away, and with a bit of study...he found what he wanted..and with a big black crystal he focused, on funneling all the loss, and grief he felt about their passing into the crystal, at first it worked, and then it backfired, the crystal soaking all the sadness from him, but also all the joy, all the love...everything, only leaving  a deep, insatiable, lust and greed for POWER.

Original goal forgotten, the Crystal Ponies watched in shock as their beloved King turned into a harsh and cruel tyrant! Dawning a crown for the first time, and steel laced cape,  demanding all of them to start to work hard to provide crystals for his work, and his plan to take over Equestria, some resisted, but those resistances were SQUISHED underneath the tyrants hooves, he didn't stop, not when the ponies lost their luster, not when their light seemed to go out, forcing them into chains, making them work, making their nightmares stained with his presence, using his magic to push into their minds and make them know he was  in charge.

In one final act of dominance, he stole their beloved crystal heart and locked it away from them, letting them sink into despair.


He got so powerful, so cocksure, that he managed to gain the attention of Equestria's greatest defenders, the Princesses themselves, and they couldn't stand by and watch him ruin that poor kingdom any longer! It  was over all too quickly as Sombra was not a fighter, he was a dictator, a ruler...The Princesses turning his body to shadow, and banishing him to the ice, but with his last  bit of FIGHT! Sombra cursed his own kingdom to vanish! 


For a long time the kingdom was silent, only to return, and with it Sombra  himself, cast in shadows,  and trying to get into the ponies minds once again, and a second time he was thwarted, this time by a pesky purple dragon, and a pink Pony who got THROWN AT HIM! Shattering the shadows, shattering his very being!

Or perhaps not, in truth what Cadance, and the power of the Crystal heart had done was shatter what Sombra was, he woke up on the outskirts of the Crystal Empire, powerless, but at his side was the remnants of a red crystal, one that had once surged with his own trapped emotions, and in it's breaking had returned them to him.../ALL/ of them, leaving him with the full weight, regret, and memory of his own falling...

The former king doesn't know what to do now, but hopefully in time he will..


Character Summary/Personality: Sombra was once a empathetic, loving little nerd, with a love of knowledge, ponies and crystals, and when said empathy and love are absent, is a cold, cruel dictator, that has no problems asserting his dominance over those he deems beneath him... With the shattering of the crystal that kept his empathy and love trapped, he is now back to where he started, but ...changed... Reserved, quiet, afraid to approach others, afraid that he has burnt every single bridge... and Equestria has changed, he doesn't know it anymore.

Will he stay a humbled fallen king, or will he cave to the shadows once again? Only time will tell.
