[Unofficial Lore] Canterlot Historical Society

The Canterlot Historical Society is at its core academic institution of moderate size, based in Canterlot.  Although the organization consistently has members venturing out across Equestria and beyond, and alumni living all over are willing to lend a hoof (or some supplies) to a member in need more often than not, the organization's only true holding is the campus in Equestria's capitol.

The Canterlot Historical Society is a specialized academic institution which has something of an unusual pair of subjects.  It primarily focuses on two things: historical understanding naturally, the study and research of past eras, and the means to catalogue and preserve artifacts from them; and as many of those artifacts are guarded by traps, sought by unscrupulous sorts, or dangerous in and of themselves, the Canterlot Historical Society also offers teaching in adventuring, which amounts to a mix of combat and survival training.  In addition, the society also organizes regular expeditions out to points of interest, which typically comprise a few senior members and a professor or two leading a group of novices, as a means to give real world experience in a somewhat controlled situation alongside investigating the site.

While there have been more than a few tales told about the founding the the Canterlot Historical Society, many with  contradictory details, the truth as endorsed by the organization is almost dull in its practicality.  It's said that the society was first formed by a group of older adventurers, knowing they were reaching the end of their careers but unable to give up on the life completely, decided that they could achieve a compromise by teaching the next generation of adventurers, and at least they would remain a significant part of the life they could no longer practice themselves.  This seems to fit the attitude of the society itself, advocating a practical approach to adventuring and generally more concerned with the preserving of history than any recognition they might gain through flare or publicity, though some have come to wonder if it is merely a cover for some secret the society's senior members are trying to keep hidden.

Gaining membership in the society is not strict, however the society takes its rules very seriously, as following them is key to preserving the history and the wellbeing of those investigating it, and breaking the wrong rules can very quickly get someone removed from membership.  There is a degree of tolerance for individuals who prefer either the adventuring side or the study of history side over the other, however there is an expectation that a member will ultimately become at least somewhat capable in both aspects.
