Celestia looked up at the night sky, her breath caught in hearty white mists around her mouth, with new eyes for the very first time.

It was an endeavor long in labor and effort and short in the frustrations that came with it. She was a patient creature by nature and the slow and laborious effort to create rather than emulate was slotted into the wonders of the future for a mare who knew full well she would live to see it, as well as what came afterward. There was a comfort in immortality after the first few centuries accompanied by existential woe and she had used this comfort to do something unique and marvelous. Their blinded eyes would be given new sight, and she would no longer be alone in the acknowledgment of the stars.

For eons unfathomable she had felt a connection to the magic of the stars. Her sister Luna felt the same connection, though differently. They were alone in this. Even the unicorn groups who once raised and lowered the sun and moon didn't connect- they were like bulls in a fine arts museum. She was different. Luna was different. And they were terribly alone. Celestia had sought to change that, and she had the time to see it through to completion. And today she stared at her success.

The magic of the cosmos works on many of the same principles as Equestrian magic. Ley lines exist across the cosmos, touching worlds and the stars and everything in between. Equestrians simply cannot access these ley lines and therefore cannot manipulate the aether that makes magic function. This was a barrier Celestia had spent a great deal of time trying to work around. Eventually she decided that there was no easy way to get it done other than use herself. Over the centuries she had slowly siphoned away parts of her connection to the magic of the cosmos as well as Equestria. In this manner could she recover her strength, though it took years.

She had done it the year before the return of her sister from her self-imposed prison of Nightmare Moon. She was still much weaker than she should be- Chrysalis' victory over her spoke to that. In time she would heal. The result was worth it. The vessel was imbued with her power. Those inside of it could manipulate the vessel to sail the stars and had access to their magic, even if they themselves could not access the ley lines. In storage were dozens of extra batteries, each one capable of accomplishing the same goal for months or years, use dependent. The hope was that such long term contact between worldly and cosmic magic, using her own connection as a point of contact, would enable understanding and eventually the use of the cosmic magic. Such magic is called Cosmokinesis and Celestia was excited to see who would crack the code.

They would have to do so while in the confines of the most specialized vessel ever constructed, however. Pulsing with her magic, it was a beauty to behold. It looked much like one of the more expensice and advanced sailing ships that you found in Equestrian harbors but it was so much more. When the sail unfurled it looked like the Aurora Borealis, the special aetheric energies inside of it interacting with the magic of the cosmos at all times. The enchanted wood and iron, slaved over for centuries and made up of materials both early and not, were of vital import. They could resist the crushing pressures of the sea and endure the vacuum of space. They recycled and reused atmosphere as long as the magic flowed. They could resist impacts that would cut open a steam ship like a hot knife through butter. Taken as a whole, the ship was indestructible to any means known to ponykind.

What lay in space, however, was a mystery. One she so desperately wanted to see for herself but could not. She was leader of this great nation and to abandon them would...it was an awful thing to even think. So she put aside her desire of the centuries and instead found the best mares and stallions for the job. Scientists and sailors, mechanics and philosophers. A good first step. All had been tested, none had been informed.

She took anther deep breath as the veil over the vessel was placed back on, masking it to the world. She was alone, save for a single freeze guard, in a field north of Stalliongrad and just south of the Crystal Empire. It was barren. Away from the trains or known paths of travel from above. Masked from all except those chosen, a fine mist surrounding them. They were given transport to just outside the mist via chariot if they so desired. Once they walked through it they would see her and her guard standing in front of an empty field. Once gathered she would speak, she would reveal.

And a new chapter in Equestrian history would begin.

As usual, Prince Blueblood had absolutely no clue what he was getting himself into.  He had simple received an invitation from Auntie Celestia that a 'special project' was in the works, on that would have a tremendous effect on the future of ponykind, and that he and his special skills could be a crucial contribution to this project.  He had, of course, accepted without question.  Not just out of familial duty, but real excitement.  Finally, a chance for actual acknowledged royal importance!  The fact that his own title as 'Prince' was a mere courtesy to his ancestors, signifying no power or responsibility weighed heavier on him than he realized; it was only recently that he'd been able to work through his internal turmoils and come out the stronger for them.

Thus, the alabaster unicorn was prompt to arrive, ready for a new adventure!  And, as might be expected, the first thing that caught the sailing Prince's eye through the mist was the absolutely magnificent vessel laid out.  It was... incredible!  Far in excess of anything he could have imagined.  "She's... beautiful, Auntie..."  The female designation for the ship came naturally to him, maritime tradition and all that.  The true nature and wonder of the vessel, though, was still hidden from him....

Zelda ran her claws through a small pile of mail as she slowly sipped her mug of tea. Bills. Bills. Coupons for an specialty wine store in Ponyville. Bills. And a rather fancy looking envelope from the castle. This was hardly new to the griffon as she normally received orders from the royal home of Princess Celestia and Princess Luna. It was never directly from the Alicorn sisters. Maybe an young officer needs her armor fixed, or an older one needs his extended. Oh no. This was different. The paper was nicer. It was almost like vellum, not the real stuff, but very close. Curious, she quickly slashed open the envelope with her pinky claw and pulled out the letter.

There was a rather simple message. It simply listed a date, time and location.  Was this the final ‘chapter’ of her month of challenges? During the last few weeks, she had been given a series of tests. Each letter or box arrived in her mailbox with a request. This ranged from building an velocipede with the supplied parts , having to find her way out of magically enchanted maze, to one that had her fix a magical 'furnace' before time ran out and it exploded. It had been noted that it would not actually really blow up, but if the timer went off, she would fail. Thankfully she did not. And at first, she assumed this was something her friends had set up for her for fun. It was no secret that she had been going through a rather dark part of her life, and her old comrades were trying their best to snap her out of it. Even Princess Luna and Discord tried their hooves at helping the black bird. But this letter, this royal letter confirmed it was probably not Fire Walker or Presteza this time. And she was not dreaming.

The following day, the black griffon dressed as if was heading off to work. She wore a thick jumpsuit, along with her heavy boots and protective gloves, all khaki colored. She brought along a small bag loaded with tools. She was never an Gryphlet Scout, but she always preferred to be prepared. The directions led her to an waiting chariot. The young officers did not speak throughout the entire voyage. If only the letter had mentioned that she should have brought a magazine or book with her to read. Thankfully, the time flew on by. And before she knew it, she was slowly making her way through a rather strange and misty field.  And more importantly, there were a few royal ponies nearby.

While she obviously not a pony, she considered herself an citizen of Equestria and respected its nobility. First there was Prince Blueblood. "Your Grace.", she gave a proper royal curtsy, which had to look downright bizarre in her work clothes. And there was also Princess Celestia, who was standing with her royal guard. What the heck was going on? She turned to the Prince, but said nothing.

Life for Bevel Gear had been a series of highs and lows... lately though it seems that the highers were getting higher and the lows were getting considerably less frequent. New friends had been made, weight had been lost, and inspiration had been achieved. Some of her newer friends wound up being quite the characters in their own right: Some chaotic, some studious, and others only mildly eccentric. She had a certain swordstallion to thank for her newly acquired fitness along with his lovely fiance (at least at the time). As for her reasons for gaining some new inspiration and pep in her step, well, there were three influences there at least: Two of them being beings that Celestia herself by name.

Speaking of the sun princess... Later in the day, Bevel found an invitation in the mail from her. Back when she'd first gotten her mark, Bevel had attended her school in canterlot: hoping to find out more about her perceived magical gifts. The inventor had expected that maybe she was trying to get in contact with her to involve her in some sort of magitech training course, but instead the letter contained just some simple instructions, a location, and a time to arrive there at. So hush hush! So Mysterious!

She was going.

With the help of a friend, Bevel soon arrived at the designated location. The mist surrounded her as she moved through it, a map held in front of her face as she moved closer and closer to the designated coordinates. "Hmm... I'm sure this is the right spot. So far nothing but mist thoough, a little odd for this climate." The mare mumbled to herself as she walked through the clouds, I'm sure it's here somewher-oof!" Just as she was lowering the map her snout wound up colliding with some orange symbol. Bevel paused and poked the surface with her hoof. It was soft. She took a step back and noticed it was a sun. The surface it was emblazoned on was a slightly fuzzy off white pink. Where had she seen this before? Her eyes slowly drifted up to notice some wings... rather long legs attached to what she bumped into and several other creatures present.

There was a weighty silence before a blush spread over the inventor's face and she slowly placed one hoof behind the other and carefully backed up. Her eyes were wide and slightly panicked as it dawned on her what she'd just done. As she moved back she would meekly mutter to the familiar face of Blueblood. "Um... Bonjour, Your Highness." She extended a hoof out to the griffin, "Bevel Gear, It's a pleasure."

After she'd done so, the mare bowed deeply and asked in rather desperate and speedy cadence, "Pleasepleasepleasedon'tsendmetothesun! I'm deeply and truly sorry! S'il vous plait pardonné moi pour mes infraction!"

"What is this? A royal seal...?" Arcana asked himself as he checked his mail after he had arrived back to his house. Usually, mail was just bills, letters from colleagues and from his college. He was all day out and had arrived late in the evening back to his home. He had to go to the university he studied years ago to give a lecture since one of the profesors was sick. He was the replacement teacher for that day, yet it was good to see that place again after a long time, though it felt odd now being on the other side. Still, he seemed to be recognized and somewhat famous in there, as the youngest student to ever graduate in fact. Yet that doesn't matter right now. What was important was what he had just got in his mail. This interesting looking letter that apparently was sent from.

Well well, wasn't this interesting. The content of the letter said... wait, he had to keep it secret. After all, this... whatever it is, is a secret proyect. It also came with what seemed a location and a date. Nothing more. He assumed it was a secret proyect thanks to how mysterious all this was. He had even written about it before! How couldn't he figure that out. Well, that was all the could anyways. What was waiting for him in that place was still unknown.
Should he go?
Yes!

---

"Sweet Celestia... this place is colder than anywhere else he had ever been. I wonder if this is how it really felt to be in the northern realms of that fantasy book I once wrote...?" He knew it was going to be cold and got himself some warm clothes on. Also, he was used to cold places, but still, this was perhaps a bit too much. And the mist didn't helped at all. Still, the curosity of what all this might be about was taking over him that he forgot about the cold some time after. It was good he had taken the chariout to the outside of the mist or this journey would had gone worse that what it is at the moment with the cold.

After several minutes of walking, he finaly found a field with something something big on it, though the mist didn't helped see what was it, as well as something it had on that pretty much made it imposible to look what was it. An invisivility spell! He also saw several ponies. There was a mare, a griffon, which looked female... uhm... he had never seen that stallion before. He looked royal... was that... what was his name..? Prince Bluesomething? Yeah, something like that. He was never keen to knowing that much about the royals aside of the Princesses themselves. Well, going back to counting. There was also a guard and finally Princess Celestia herself! She was more beautiful that he though she was, since he never had the chance to see her before.

"Greetings everypony..." Arcana said as he walked over to the group, heading towards the princess herself to bow to her and greet her. "Your majest-" He was saying before... did that mare just touched her butt with her nose?! Well, we are off to a good start... !

Yay!

I was being sarcastic...

Awww....

The first to arrive was the Helmspony of the vessel and Celestia's nephew-cum-niece, depending on the tides of the moment. He must have had a good mind for this because he was able to notice the hidden vessel that nopony else could. She smiled upon his approach. To many, Blueblood would seem a very odd choice. He didn't have the history that REN captains had. He didn't have any sort of shipping business that made him experienced in the ways of the sea- at least to the extent that others did. But she knew him. He always had a fascination with the sea and a sense of adventure deep within him. That is what was needed here! The nice attitude adjustment didn't hurt. "Welcome, my beloved nephew," she said warmly before leaning in conspiratorial fashion, "you, more than most, know the value of a good unveiling. Don't ruin it just yet!" she said with an excited wink, her enormous wings flapping once in a rare display of barely constrained glee.

Blueblood was soon joined by Zelda. A griffon may not have been initially what many thought of when they thought Equestria, but indeed she was as Equestrian in character and heart as any could really ask for. Many on the staff for this voyage and future ones were scientists and skilled specialists. And indeed, this was a scientific mission at its core. But the vessel would be traveling for hours, days, weeks, months- in the future, years. They needed those who could easily repair the vessel and those who could defend it. Zelda had these qualities and many more. She would make a fine addition to this crew and lent credence to her philosophy that Equestrian values weren't limited by species. "Zelda, a pleasure to see you have accepted," she said, greeting the Griffon with a broad smile. How exciting a day this was for all, even if they were still mostly in the dark. "I trust your travel was-"

She was interrupted by something walking into her flank. She turned a surprised eye over to it, only to see Bevel Gear there. She promptly felt around- well, she was not one for modesty- only to discover who it was. She blushed, stepped backed, introduced herself, and then begged mercy. Celestia raised her eyebrows sardonically. Bevel was here for her inventiveness and creativity. Solutions on the fringe of perception rarely operated by normal process and came to those with the freedom of thought that inventors and madponies shared. Bevel was a little of both, but mostly just intelligent enough for her acquisition to be a boon for all involved. "Hmmm...no, I have something better in mind for you," she said with just enough faux seriousness to illicit a worry if one bought into her somewhat aloof if friendly public image.

Next was Arcana. He did share some similarities with Bevel and Zelda, some overlapping skill sets, but also a writer and academic. She wanted somepony who could record this not only for academia and historical cause, but to give it the character to inspire future generations to continue this mission. Nonetheless, such important insight from a pony who wrote about the stars was important. Does it live up to expectations, exceed perhaps? Her sense of innate optimism banished the thought of it failing to live up to them. "Arcana! Pleasure to see you here. Hopefully what is being revealed soon to all of you will stoke the imagination for ten thousand generations and more," she ended cryptically. To all gathered she motioned to the right, and a single long bench seemingly appeared out of thin air, the mist and spell receding from it.

"Please, take a seat while we wait for the final member of your crew to arrive."

Could no one else see the ship?  Or had the misty veils parted for Blueblood's eyes alone?  Perhaps it was, unbeknownst to himself, the Prince had a special attunement of his perception, a sense for that which was connected to the stars, which also could account for his innate sense of direction and navigation skills.

It would be as good an explanation as any as to why he had been selected for so prestigious a venture.  Of course, there was the more obvious and likely reason of royal nepotism, but surely nopony would dare to suggest that.  In any case, he was surprised to see his Auntie Celestia be this excited over... well, anything, frankly.  "Oh?  Well, alright then.  Don't get your feathers in a knot, though!"  He chuckled as he wondered who else had been invited; obviously this was a lead-up to some kind of journey/adventure, so that would be a clue to the sort of ponies that would be coming along...

As it turned out though, the first pony was not a pony, but a griffon!  Was this an international mission?  Well, probably not, given that she gave him the proper respectful bow; no griffons from Aquellia would do so, and certainly not ones from Griffonstone.  An Equestrian griff, though, and one oddly familiar to Blueblood.  *Blackbird... black panther... I have seen her before, I know it!*  Was it at the Gala?  Or perhaps one of his friends, Fire Walker probably, introduced them?  In any case, he nodded, smiled, and hoped to Faust that he would recall her name before they had to speak again.  Or his Auntie could just go ahead and introduce them, that'd be nice!  Hm, Zelda, eh?  Now he remembered; she was the smith that all the nobles went to for their fancy heirloom armor repairs and recreations.  So, skilled metalworker; probably a good thing?  Good with weapons and armaments too, likely enough.  That was definitely good.

An incident quickly developed that took attention away, however; namely, a mare coming muzzle-to-flank with Auntie Celestia!  The Prince barely suppressed his snickering, but straightened his face in time to join in on the Solar Princess' vein of humor.  "Oh yes, she has very special places for a mare like you."  He recognized Bevel now as the cousin of one of his best friends, Java.  Well, that was nice!  If what he suspected was true, then they'd be crewing together for an extended period of time; be good to have some common ground, at least.

And finally, there was Arcana. Or, maybe not finally, as Auntie expected another soon.  Hm, this pony looked like a chronicler, of some kind?  Either a writer or reporter.  Huh, so this was going to be something pretty special, then... "I hope they don't keep us in suspense long!"  Blueblood brightly asseverated, eyes still fixed on the out-of-sight ship.  He couldn't wait to start strolling its decks...

Zelda watched as a few more ponies made their way towards her and Prince Blueblood. One she was sure that she had not met before, but somehow she knew her. One of her friends had described an fellow adventurer of hers that was also a very clever inventor.  Along with being rather brilliant, she was also rather adorkable. Every detail was correct from her coat that reminded her of the color of an 'Uncle Beakly' chocolate bar to her pale yellow eyes,  and when she spoke her name, 'Bevel Gear' it was now very obvious that this was the same pony she was thinking of.

"I know of you.", she quickly took the pony's hoof. "We share a common friend. One that has spoken very well of you." Then the mare had a slight meltdown after bumping into Celestia. She was afraid the Princess would send her to the sun? "I don't believe she intends to do such a thing.", the blacksmith whispered, "And my name is Zelda, of the Birzoth Clan." Oh dear, that accident was one she wish she had been involved in.

While Bevel was 'acting like the mishegas' as the griffon's grandmother would say, another pony came into view. Another chocolatey one, this time a stallion and just like the others, was a unicorn. It looked like she was not going to be the brightest one in this bunch, but every job needed its 'muscle'. The handsome Prince was in pretty good shape, so it wouldn't just be her that needed to watch over the eggheads. So what would this mission be? Thankfully Princess Celestia's full attention was now on her group.

Bevel had to be 'crazy in the coconuts' to even think that Equestria's co-ruler would want to harm her little group. Princess Celesta was a being of awesome power, but she did not use this power to force her will onto her people, but instead, she used it to build up her royal citizens, to make them better in every way. And her incredible beauty! The black griffon would give her feathers to sculpt such an impressive figure! And now she was being addressed directly by her! Stay calm Zelda! Don't freak out!

"Thank you for the offer, your majesty.", Zelda gave the princess a proper bow, "I would have not missed it for the world." Along with being able to raise the sun, the princess also had very impressive bench-summoning skills. And they were to 'stoke the imagination for ten thousand generations and more'? What in the world was she going to have them build?

Being the patient sort, she quickly found a seat on the new bench and waited...

There was an audible gulp that came from the mare after the princess responded to be pleas for forgiveness. Something -worse- than being left on the sun of all things? What in the world could be so terrible?! Blueblood's contributions to the joke being played upon the poor prenchmare didn't help her imagination from running wild with possible punishment that could be applied to her ponderous plot! "Is there some sort of alternate dimension that I'm  going to be dumped in where my hooves will be replaced by wiggly, jointed things that could grab and where I'll need to learn to walk on two legs?! By the stars above I don't think I could handle that sort of inconvenience!" Despite the use of the considerably less dire word 'inconvenience' the tone of the pony seemed positively panicked!

...

at least until she was calmed by the words of a species (but not an individual) she was much more familiar with: a griffin. "Je suis soulage!" The unicorn wiped some sweat off of her forehead, "Oh, Zelda... That's a really nice name! It's a pleasure to meet you, Mon amie!" The one who had described Bevel to Zelda might appear to have left a thing or two out, that or she'd changed her appearance somewhat. In the past Bevel had worn her mane in dreadlocks with a bandana on top of her head, but now it appeared she'd been letting her mane grow out longer: It appeared more voluminous and full of messy curls with little streaks of yellow curls visible in it's contents. "The Birzoth's you say? They were metalworkers, right? Mostly blacksmiths? I've been wanting to get a look at some of their work but I always seem to be late when it comes to getting the antiques: Been trying to get an idea how long they last firsthoof."

For a little while, Bevel had been trying to remember where she'd heard the name Arcana before... his face looked really familiar too. The gears in her head would soon begin to click in unison with her widening eyes. Was that Arcana ink?! The Manehattan based sci-fi writer?! This was just too perfect! The very second she was  able to get a moment alone with him she'd have to ask him to sign her autograph book! speaking of which, did she bring that? the pony pushed a hoof into the fluffy curls of her mane to pull out a book rather casually before stuffing it back in. Yep! She remembered it. Now that she thought about it that large vessel in the distance looked like something right out of one of his stories! Maybe she could make something to assist in the upkeep of this vessel, oh! Maybe he'd get a kick out of her work on golemic development and magical imbued intelligence theory! This was going to be so much fun!

Arcana smiled when the Princess directed herself to him after his welcome. She had spoken to the others firsts rather, as they had arrived before him, and he understood. Although meeting the princess was always a pleasure, even more this being his first time, he had to be patient and wait for his turn. It was the right thing to do after all. He smiled to her once she had arrived to him and spoke. "Thank you, Princess, for your kind words, and I will do my best to make sure I live up to your expectations!" He said with a small smile. Oh dear! This just became really interesting!

At first. Arcana was not getting any attention other than the one of the princess. It seemed they didn't or either know who he was or just didn't seemed to want to greet him at first, as they seemed to be to talk to each other as if they knew each other from before, or had met before at least one time. He didn't mined it though, don't get the wrong idea. He was okay with not being the center of attention. He has had his fair share of attention in the past and is just not his thing. He rather keep up doing his usualy stuff like writing. Talking about that, this new adventure will surely be usefull for a new book series, and now that he will have first hoof experience on how this will be, other than his imaginations and various calculations he had done in the past, it will be much easier to have an actual thing to base his writting rather than trying to make it hard science fiction. For anyne asking, hard science fiction is writing science fiction with a strong emphasis on actualy scientific accuary. In other worlds, actualy making it seem posible!

It was until he noticed the brown mare, oddly enough, a lot of other ponies that are rather smart and into science also have brown fur and things like that. Odd. Anyways. It seemed that she had recognized him! Not that he was trying to evade that, no, is jsut that she seemed to be a fan. It also seemed she was looking for something between her belongings. Maybe to be sure it was the real himself. Or maybe just a book about something they could use. In any case, perhaps later he could have a word with her.

Going back to the main event, his ears perked when he heard that the Princess saying that there was someone else joining them.

Good thing we are not the last ones!

Yes, quite to be honest.

A distant shout rang out from behind the assembled team; "Sorry I'm late, everypony!" That voice came from the last of the group to walk through the wilderness; Moony. The moon-flanked unicorn explained herself as she wormed her way through the others. "Had to go to the bathroom real bad when I got off the train, and it like, took for-ever for a toilet to open up. Never seen so many out-of-order stalls in my life!"

Moony had been a top-notch student at Celestia's School for Gifted Unicorns back in the day. The young mare had gone on to run a club for magically-inclined ponies, earn her master's degree in Aetheroology, and eventually co-resurrect the fabled Magic Guild. All through the years, Moony maintained a friendly bond with the royal alicorn who had been one of her greatest mentors. That was why when Celestia offered Moony the chance to join a select team for a classified project, the young mare wasted no time before accepting.

What Moony saw before her once she was finally up in front... made her question her initial enthusiasm. The unicorn scratched the back of her neck in confusion, seeing nothing of apparent value at this secret assembly point. "Okaaaaay Tia, why exactly did you bring all of us here to the ummm... middle of nowhere?"

Moondancer arrived, completing the crew. She was a bright academic and great user of magic, and gave this trip the All-Equestrian feel it needed. Others may have been better in terms of ability, but when it came down to it, this crew was assembled because their unique characteristics and personalities were suited to it, Moondancer among them. She had great initiative as well- something they all needed to have when they were approached by the unknown, and not a slavish devotion to orthodoxy. "I'm glad you could join us today Moondancer," Celestia chided lightly and playfully, not perturbed by her friend's tardiness. They wouldn't have the capability to be tardy for a while, so might as well take advantage of friendly indiscretions now. Now that they were all fully assembled in the freezing cold, she could get to the task of the day. "I brought you out here for the sight seeing, of course," she bounced her words back to Moondancer before she stepped backed and took a deep breath.

"Welcome, all of you, to this momentous occasion. For generations untold, we have existed in partial ignorance of the larger body of magic. Our view is exciting, but limited, to the terrestial plane. Only my sister and I can touch the cosmos and feel the magic that exist out there," she paused, "and therefore only we know of the potential that exists for all living beings to harness such magic for the betterment. Therefore, I have spent several centuries perfecting a method by which we could try to connect ourselves to what exists in the cosmos. It was never easy or without heartache. So much time, so much failure, so many lifetimes of effort, all to bring us here, together, on this day. Because after centuries, I have completed the task I set for myself: The creation of a new type of magic. A magic that soon all of you will be in control of."

She let these words sink in.
"Cosmokinesis is not something we can simply learn, however. There is no way to study it or replicate it. Instead, it must be sought after, felt, touched, and dealt with where it lies- in the very cosmos themselves. We cannot do this, no matter how much we would want to, with current technology. So, alongside the creation of Cosmokinesis, I have spent the eons working on a special vessel," she said, allowing the last words to hang with a pregnant pause. Behind her, the spell that kept the vessel hidden dissipated in an orderly fashion, top to bottom. The sail shimmered elegantly in the moon light, flapping gently in the breeze, as the rest of the vessel came into view.

"The materials are unique and enchanted, crafted over and over again until they were perfect, bent into shape tirelessly, and imbued with my own aetheric signature. With this, ponies may venture into the cosmos themselves. You may use your own magic inside the vessel safely even though, out there, you will have no connection to the aether of Equestria. Using my aetheric form as a conduit, you will be charged with various tasks with the end goal of cracking the code and learning how we can connect to the magic of the Cosmos!" She said with great excitement, looking at the crew proudly.

"You have all been selected for your unique skills and abilities to form the first crew that will head into space. Blueblood, I could think of no one else I would rather captain this vessel into th skies. Bevel, your inventiveness and ability to think out of the box is exactly what I need on this voyage. Zelda, there is no telling what we may find, and I need somegriffon who can keep the vessel afloat and defended no matter what. Arcana, I need somepony wh can document this in a way that doesn't trivialize it- somepony with a way with words. And Moondancer, you are a fine artist with magic, and few would do better to study the magic of the cosmos," she allowed the moment to breathe.

She sighed and smiled.
"Any questions? I would be more than happy to answer them."

Blueblood knew several things, simply from the magnificence of the ship that he had glimpsed.  They were called for a journey, a special journey, one requiring all the skills this motley crew could assemble to the task.  An adventure, in other words.  The Prince had a... complicated attitude towards adventures, filing them under 'the most harrowing experiences of my life,' while also having the files cross-referenced in the folder, 'most ultimately rewarding experiences in my life.'

Thus, a mixture of anticipation and apprehension dominated his emotions, keeping him silent before all the meetings between the crew.  Not a good start for a captain, it had to be said.  Nonetheless, his ears were perked once Auntie Celestia got started.  A lot of the more arcane stuff went over his head, but the gist of it was clear: they were going to SPACE.  To the moon, and further!  The first ponies ever to do this!  And he was going to be the captain; a role that would immortalize him in history!  No longer would he be unable to meet the eyes of the portraits of his ancestors; he too would have an achievement that would ring down through the ages!

The realization perked his head up and brought out a wide smile.  It also transformed the filter through which he saw the others with him.  Or perhaps lens was a better word, since he now saw them clearly.  A crew, comrades, his crew and comrades, to accompany him beyond the great beyond!  What an adventure!

He couldn't help but grin as he responded to his Auntie, "That's... fantastic!  I'm honored, and I have to say, can't wait to get onboard her to see her for myself!"  Easily taking up the sailor's habit of referring to the ships as female, he turned to the rest of the gathered specialists.  "Glad to see you all too, though I fancy most of us haven't met yet.  No matter!  Sure we'll get along famously and all that.  Now..."  He turned back to Princess Celestia.  "How, er, long were you thinking this journey was going to be?  Only so much food you can fit on board, and all that.  Water too, that'll be the big one."

“Yep. We work with metal. Still you’re better off looking at Birzoth antiques.”, the griffon plainly stated, “My family has gone into a more utilitarian sort of design of the last few decades. Their creations are well made and last for a very long time, but lack any sort of flair or design that would stand out. You may have used one of their tools before and never thought much of it. I even have a few of their pieces in my pack here.", she patted a bag she had slung over shoulder, "There' nothing wrong with boring tools. I doubt most farmers worry about getting the hoe or rake that's pretty or stylish. ", she gave off a rather beaky smile, "I help create or patch up armor in Canterlot, and sometimes I am called to fix or replace certain fixtures in the castle, and considering they tend to be rather ornate, I am expected to create replacements that match the old ones."

Zelda watched with slight interest as a mare stumbled into view. What was her name? Loony? Or Moony? The first one seemed more suitable as she referred to the royal ruler of Equestria as 'Tia'. Maybe she was one of Princess Celestia's students? The black griffon had heard the much beloved ruler tended to collect some of the brighter unicorns to help enhance their education far beyond any normal magic school teacher could ever do. The good ruler spoke out her name. Moondancer. She then proceeded to mention a word the bird had only seen in comic books or two bit paperback novels. Cosmokinesis. That was space stuff! Astronomical Manipulation! Asterokinesis! If any other pony was talking about this in such a serious tone, Zelda would have considered them to be utter (taco)Bobbymyseh! But this was Celestia! She was not here to waste anyone's time.

Then she mentioned a 'special vessel'. Where was it at? Was it up in the sky? Nope? Apparently it had been right in front of the small group the whole time. Just a simple spell kept it from view. "Oh my.", she yelped as her beak nearly hit the ground. This was some sort of airship that would go into space? As in the inky black stuff above? The blacksmith managed to snap her beak closed just in time for Celestia to mention her orders. She would keep the ship in shape and to chase away any foes. But who the heck was in space? Maybe they would run into a few little green mares? She almost wanted to laugh, but she could not say anything. She had no questions. She was utterly speechless. Thank goodness she asked Docket to watch her home and water her house-plants. This might last a little longer than a weekend.

That far off shout that came from behind all of the group made bevel's ears twitch. She'd heard that voice before- Oh, right! That was Moondancer. Bevel had actually attended one of her guild's parties in the past when she wasn't as ... peppy as she was now. Back then she'd been dealing with a lot in her head and in hindsight worried that she may have come off as rather rude. Just like that it meant bevel had another pony she needed to try and talk to once this briefing business was over.

While Princess Celestia was giving her passionate, dramatic, and utterly weighty speech, Bevel stood staring in utter delight at the unveiling of the ship. The pony's tail seemingly waging so fast as to become a blur. Cosmokinesis? That was genuinely a fascinating branch of study! Back in the school she'd glimpsed small mentions of the idea of such a magic but due to limitations in technology and no known way for ponies to access it at the time it could only be considered blind speculation. Already a million questions were buzzing about inside her mind. How on earth would mere mortals like going to be able to control and manipulate cosmic forces so easily? Actually now that she thought about it this was sounding almost like one of those comic books that her assistant mac was reading one day. If they came out of this with superpowers now that would be quite a story to share with that colt back home.

Her cheek flushed upon hearing that praise directed at her. Out of the box thinking... yeah that was her. She was responsible for the magical enhanced coffeemaker that could also poach eggs at forty paces, and that was just the result of a night of drunken shenanigans.

"Mon dieu... this is so... amazing! I've been thinking of things like this since I was a filly, wanting to see beyond what little we can see on this world! All the things we'll be able to do! The places we'll so boldly go! This will be incredible! Perhaps we'll meet extra terrestrials! Find hither to undiscovered elements! The possibilities are absolutely endless!"

It seems that even Blueblood was even sucked into the excitement. Seems his excited smile was actually as cute as her cousin told her it was. He immediately asked some of the most important questions too, that first one was something she was especially curious about. She would still need to sort this all out with her schedule and cancel a few meetings if this was going to take a long time. If she was going to be off among the stars... well she was going to probably have to tell a certain someone she'll be gone a while and that might lead to something unforeseen occurring. One more look at the vessel had immediately hug Zelda to her with a gigantic grin plastered upon her face, "I think we're going to be working pretty closely together! In order to effectively serve the mission I'll need to study the ship quite  a while and get to know the one patching her up!"

Arcana couldn't belive this at first. A magic that could be used to harness the power of the stars and the universe! Not even he had ever though about something like that! He always thought ponies would reach the stars with the help of technology, not magic, but either way, this meant that now he had a new idea for writing in a new book! Thank you Celestia!

Now that he had heard what was his role in the ship, it made more sense why was he selected. A pony that has writen before about this, perhaps his ideas could work around in this new mission, perhaps even something fom his books might happen! Well, that was an idea for himself of course. His real mission was to documente whatever happened up there. It was something he was used to in fact. With his time researching and investigating, he had aquired an ability to register whatever happens, and his skills as a writer will also help him document all this and make it more understandable not only for the princess, as he though that perhaps she was not used to many of the stuff that came along with this expedition. Mostly technical words, although he might be wrong. But anyways, now he had to think in a way to do this, and now he had two options, and wanted to do both.

His first option was to simply document all this and make it a rather well orginized document will all the findings and reports to the princess. A rather profesional approach. The second one was writing a book (or several) about everything that happens in their journey for the general public, so all of them know what this band of... whatever it was or wanted to call it, did. Oh boy, imagine the possibilities! Heck, he was speechless at all this ideas coming to mind and even more when the princess had revealed the ship!

well... it was not quite what he expected, but nevertheless it was still amazing! perhaps this new approach will help him get new ideas! Besides, the ship was good looking. He just wondered if it would be able to reach the speed needed to exit the planet. Hmmm... still, magic as always usefull! And finally, Celestia asked if there were any questions. After thinking for a few moments, he gave a step forward.
"I do have one, princess. As Prince... said... How long do you have planned this mission to last? I also want to know." He clearly didn't remembered the name, so he did his best to avoid saying it, although there might be a time he will be asked. Oh dear...

Wait, aren't we missing someone?
Oh, right! The new commer!

Soon after his question, he looked at the new commer, but said nothing, wanting to hear the answer of the princess first before greeting the new member.

Moony had to hand it to Princess Celestia; the alicorn knew how to pull off world-shattering reveals with flair. Cosmokinesis? An interstellar sail ship? Back in graduate school, the moon-flanked mare had heard of all sorts of theories about the nature of magic in outer space and how magitech could potentially be utilized to travel the cosmos. However, it had been Moony's understanding that the technological advancements required for making space travel a reality were still generations away. To think that building a space craft had been Tia's secret hobby all along!

It then dawned on Moony... SPACE!

She was being chosen... to GO IN OUTER SPACE!!!

.....SPAAAACE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

How unreal was that? Few ponies ever seriously dreamed of exploring the stars, but here Moony was being asked to do the what-used-to-be impossible. Gosh, there was something to wrap her mind around. Joining this crew... it would change everything! How could Moony turn down a once-in-a-lifetime chance to leave the confines of this earth?

Yet there were other things to consider; things that dampened initial excitement. Moony would be leaving behind everything behind. Her friends. Her family. The Magic Guild. And who knew for how long? "...Celestia," the young mare nervously asked; "Just wondering, but there wouldn't happen to be any magic gizmo on the ship we can use to, well, you know... communicate with our folks back home, would there?"

Their reactions were expected, though no less infectiously exciting to behold. She wanted to join in the merriment, but there was still much to do and learn, and this was a dangerous job regardless of how amazing it may be. Blueblood was more reserved than his peers but she could see the twinkle in the mariner's eye. He came from a long line of successful ponies and deep inside the breast of Blue yearned a desire to belong to that august line of venerated stallions and mares. With this act, Blue would- and would have an even greater ability to impact positive change that had been Celestia's younger relation's way recently. She was proud of Blue; today was simply an acknowledgment of just how much Celestia thought of Blue's capabilities and ability to lead. “We will see inside her soon enough. A guided tour over the important working bits is in order, I believe?” She asked, letting the question of length hang in the air for a moment.

Zelda responded with her own stunned excitement, which made Celestia smile. It was true that the chances of running into alien life during one of the early trips was, at best, nearly impossible. She would have been made aware of such a different aetheric signature. Twilight at least would have known! But while their early journeys would be close to the planet, it wouldn't be too long before they ventured further and further out. Celestia couldn't guarantee that there was life out there, but she had always felt like they weren't alone and was more than a little confident that they would find intelligent life. And while she hoped beyond hope it would be friendly, assurances for safety were required. And with space at a premium, whoever was doing the protecting need to have other, equally vital skills. Zelda had those and would make for an excellent addition to the crew, no doubt about that.

Bevel Gear- or as she should know soon enough Bevel Gear Pie- was suitably invested into the project. “We will be going inside soon enough. I will also have multiple copies of various instruction manuals as well as point by point construction analysis which I made during my project,” she said, lying only slightly. She always kept a log- a diary perhaps- during construction but had edited, changed, and modified it over the years. It had started a little less technical and more starry-eyed but as the centuries piled on she realized that it needed to help those who would be going. Now it was a tome of valuable knowledge that would help the crew understand the vessel to a greater degree. She wouldn't be there to help them as much as the idea excited her, so she needed to do everything he could do to support them from afar.

Arcana was also seemingly excited with this though more reserved in his facial expression than his fellows. His role may have seemed less essential than others but in the great scheme of things the public would be the final barometer of success. She didn't need their okay to start this of course, but she wanted it to light their imaginations afire. He could do that while at the same time being an excellent chronicler of events. These jobs were both equally vital and he was uniquely qualified for the position. He also asked how long the mission was, and with two asking it, she felt compelled to respond finally. “The first mission may only take a few hours- a simple testing of systems. Beyond that, it depends on how quickly tasks are accomplished. Sometimes you will be tasked with various tests, and such missions can be accomplished quickly. Other times you will be exploring- time frame unknown on those, but you shouldn't be worried about time once you leave the planet,” she ended cryptically.

She felt like she could survive off the mental energy being used up by Moondancer, whose muted but still excellent excitement was nothing compared to what she was thinking about. She would play a very important role in ensuring that the magical properties of the ship were understood and maintained. She couldn't cast the same magic or do what Celestia could do, but the ruler of all Equestria had done her best to allow others to utilize and maintain her magics. Of course there were plenty of powerful unicorns who could have done it, but none with that combination of skill, personality, and energy of Moondancer. “Sadly, communication will be very slow. There are methods of communication but once you are away from the planet, messages have to pass through aether that becomes difficult to be transmitted through. It may take several hours to a day or two, maybe more if you're truly far out, for messages to be delivered. Still, it is the best we can do at the moment- hopefully these missions will allow us to change that?” She smiled warmly. Her horn lit up, and a large gangplank unfurled itself, allowing access topside.
“If you're all agreeable with this, a tour is in order.”

All the grown up discipline in Prince Blueblood was straining to keep his composure, as his inner colt was practically jumping up and down in giddiness, currently.  A space-ship, an outer space-ship, and he was about to tour it, and captain it!  As Auntie Luna could attest, this was a literal dream come true.  Hopefully, this journey would not include the bit with the carnivorous socks...

A more sobering thought, though, was how coy Celestia was being over the length of the journey.  Advanced thaumatic theory was way over the lesser royalty's head; as far as he was concerned, time was the same everywhere and would flow as fast anywhere.  What was all this the, about not worrying about time once they left the planet?  At least the initial flight wouldn't be too long, to his relief, and no doubt the relief of others who had echoed his question.  "Ah, so we're going to take her out on her christening venture, are we?"  He nodded, smiling, towards the ship, which had wholly captivated his attentions.  "I'm certainly ready for the tour, how about you folks?"  He'd already stepped forward, looking back at his crew.  Judging by all their reactions to the announcement, they all probably were!

The black griffon had been so mesmerized by the sight of Celesta’s awesome space vessel, that Bevel Gear’s quick hug caught the blacksmith off guard. "Hopefully not this close!", she squawked. For an unicorn, she was pretty strong! But she was right. They needed to study and learn about the ship down to the very rivets it was held together with. They needed to know what to do If the ship struck a asteroid or even the ship of little green ponies! While it was most likely covered in all matter of spells, there was still bound to be plenty of mundane science that also kept it afloat.

Zelda cringed as the moon flanked referred to the ruling princess by her first name. She would never get used to that. But the gal had a point. Communication! It would be nice to be able to talk to friends and family while she was away. Maybe Docket could even house-watch her place? Her goofy brother Pocket would then have his flat to himself. Maybe even invite that gal he was dating? What was her name again? Before she could remember, the Royal Princess mentioned that they could send messages back and forth, but there would be a delay. This made sense for even the bird.

The blacksmith turned her attention back to the ship as Princess Celestia announce the start of a tour. They would now actually go inside and check out this marvelous, magical space flying machine! She wanted to see it all! The control room! The security are! And most importantly, the bathrooms! You never really ever see one of those in an space movie. Zelda patiently waited for those in front of her to move along, before she followed the small group into the future!

The mention of this tome sent bevel's mind into overdrive! What would it say?! How did the engines work?! How big is the resting quarters?! Were there any improvements that could be ma-- what was she thinking? Of course improvements could be made! If she'd been invited Celestia clearly would have taken into account her magitech expertise and talent for improving existing magitechnological systems. While the mare's mind continued to calculate possibilities and admiring the design of the ship, one could practically see the smoke escaping her ears as her brain went into overdrive, then came to a dead stop. When she realized she was still holding a griffin at her side.

Bevel released poor Zelda from her overly enthusiastic grasp with a nervous chuckle,"Pardonne-Moi!" Bevel carefully dusted off the griffin and offered her hoof in a more relaxed type of expression of cooperation.

The delay between messages depending on the distance of their voyages wasn't too surprising to hear. She'd studied such theories in aetherology classes, some of them with Moondancer in fact during her less... sociable days. There was something she could try: Getting Moondancer's help in the development of a component to expedite the transfer of aether based messages through the magnificent sea of stars. What the princess said about worrying about time was definitely something that had piqued this inventor's curiosity, Immediately her hood shot up like she'd regressed to an eager schoolfilly.  "Oh! Oh! Oh! Oh!" She would bounce up and down as if her hooves had been replaced by rubber, "Does the reason we don't have to worry about time have anything to do with aether's proposed effects on gravity based Time dilation?!"

Before the answer could come or if it did even come, once the gangplank came down. It was like Bevel had disappeared from where she was standing. A small pattern of dust now in place where she used to be forming a vague outline of the prench magi-mechanist. Her dissapearance only mystifying anyone for a few seconds before an exuberant response to Blueblood's Question came from the top of the gangplank, Bevel peaking out from behind the frame of the hatch, "Ready?! I'm Absolument prêt! What are you all waiting for?!"

Huh..... so long distance communication WOULD be possible; just not like, sending messages instantly. With the sort of Magic Guild escapades Moony's been on however, she mentally steeled herself for the possibility that there'd be times when communications with their home planet would be impossible. Still, any possibility was better than no possibility. More or less accepting of Princess Celestia's answer, Moony perkily nodded in assent at the suggestion of touring the new-fangled spacecraft.....

(sorry for delay. College has been killing me lately)

Alright. So the first thing they would do is testing. Nothing out of the ordinary. In fact, he was grateful for this! He did not knew what this ship could do or was capable of, so running some diagnostics, as well as getting used to it, is essential if they want to get this mission up and running the fastest as possible. Although the ship was not what he exactly expected, he hoped he could easily get around it once he knew it well, and that would not take too much time as well.

Back to the questions and Celestia's answers, it seemed that further missions would come over time and they will be different rather than having a single one. This made things a bit easier for both the trip and his writing. He could make reports of each mission, as well as make it easier for him to perhaps write them in different chapters for a book if he decided to take that rout as well. It was something to see later on once all this was settled. It was also good to hear the answers to the questions of the others though. The more info about this the better!

He replied to Celestia with a simple nod. He had several things in his mind at the moment and perhaps talking was not the best idea if he wanted to keep them in his mind for now. He was not trying to be mean or anything, but at the moment, some of his thoughts were scrambled and it was better that he pulled himself together before addressing the princess and his new companions again.

They were all ready for the tour. Excellent. “Well, let's not waste any more time!” she said with undue excitement. A boarding ramp unfurled as the beam of the ship opened up, and Celestia led them all in.

The beam was currently empty. Along the walls were hooks and slots for what looked like large square objects, with sixteen such spaces laying empty across the length of the ship. Holes appeared in all sixteen sections. “The beam of the ship is dedicated to experiments and cargo, mission depending. Currently this is empty, but there are many modules. Hydroponic experiments, first contact, mining, many different types of scientific experiments, cultural exchange and explorations- the beam of the ship is dedicated to the day to day mission of the vessel. They can be locked in place, and then cylinders- we'll discuss them later- placed in to provide specialized power,” she said, moving to the stern of the vessel.

Once there, they saw a relatively small space. The wood was transparent, and underneath they could see two large magitek engines. The room was otherwise full of maintenance supplies as well as a single panel and knob, as well as a bunch of readouts- ticker tape machines that were currently off. “The ship will fly through the cosmos using a special method,” she said as her horn lit up. A panel in the wall opened up. On the right side were two cylinders that glowed white and pink, slotted inside two holes. On the other side were around a dozen more cylinders stacked neatly. There was a chart in between that detailed timing and maintenance concerns. “These cylinders are filled with my magic. You can slot them into position, and it gives my magic to the engines and helps coat the sails. This will help the ship move as it contains and manipulates my own magic, which functions in the cosmos,” she said as she pointed to a knob below.

“You may direct the flow of the magic using this knob. You may direct all power to the engines. This will give you the most power and the most control over your flight path, but it burns through magic the fastest. You may direct my magic entirely to the sails. You will be at the mercy of the aetheric currents of the cosmos as you would be at sea here, but this saves a tremendous amount of magic from the cylinder. The normal setting is a mix. You have powered flight from the engines as well as the aetheric sail. Useful if you want to conserve some power but still have the ability to speed up and fight against currents you don't like. The final setting is no power to the sails or engines. Useful in certain situations, perhaps- I leave it up to you.”

She then led them towards the bow of the ship. Eventually past the beam, they entered into the crew area. A small kitchen and pantry, a square room with tables and lined with bookshelves full of books and games. Then she pushed past a large curtain, and they were in a hallway with bunks on either side.
“As you can see, the living quarters are close to the kitchen and free room. Each one of you will have a bunk made from some of the finest materials considered worthy of travel. A privacy curtain is all that can be provided for now. Inside of each bunk is a small personal communication device,” she waved towards one. It looked like the top side of a desk with ink, a quill, and some paper. Her horn lit up as she discussed the individual items.

“The quill and ink have tiny elements of my own magic imbued in there, allowing for its travel through the cosmos. When you are ready to send the message, you pull this small lever. Dragonfire, a gift from Queen Ember and her special sages, will burst forth, sending that message to whomever you desire.. All three combined, any message you write can travel through the expanse of space and re-appear wherever it is needed. Due to the distance, this will not be instant, while return messages will be much slower. Now, lets see the bridge.”

She moved to the bow of the ship where the bridge was located. A series of ticker tape machines were stationed around, levers and knobs, and a larger version of the communication device. That was located right next to the poshest of all chairs, all of which looked out through the windows into what lay outside. “As you can see, this is the bridge. Mission control is arranged from here, and the ship's functions a can be controlled from here as well. Hull integrity control, navigation, communication- all from here,” she took a deep breath.

“So, I am sure many of you have more specific questions. Now would be the time to ask!”

OOC- Posting order suspended for now. If you have a question, ask, and Celestia will respond when I can.

Although Prince Blueblood's primary experience was with sailing ships, he was no stranger to magically-powered vehicles.  One of his best friends designed his own airships, with experimental power sources, to boot.  Actually, now that the unicorn thought about just how reliable those power sources proved to be, in the how-must-jostling-before-it-all-goes-kablooey sort of way, he was just the slightest bit more apprehensive about following his Auntie onboard.  Surely, though, Celestia would have put her devices through absolutely rigorous testing, surely....

He kept a weather eye out, all the same, until they got to the engine rooms.  It did reassure the Prince that the cylinders were Celestia's own magic; that didn't sound too dangerous.  The bit about consuming energy, though... "I take it that it would be a... ah, very bad thing were we to run out of energy before we made it home.  Unless we would be able to convert the aetheric energy into something directly usable.  Would we be able to do that?"  He shot a glance back at his crew, noting the presence of Moondancer.  She was supposed to be a bright mare.  "Well, that might be one for our research team, I suppose."

The tour continued, through the quarters and onto the bridge.  Blueblood trotted forward, taking in the panel of instruments, nodding sagely at the ones he recognized, and blankly at the ones he did not.  "I suppose the manual will be distributed in due course."  Stepping back, he reached out a hoof to test the plush of the Captain's chair.  Ooh, nice.  Very comfortable.
