History:

Barbera Red was born Amore Della Familia, a middle-class filly in Roam. Growing up she was instilled with a great and overwhelming work ethic. Both of her parents worked full time and she found herself admiring just how much they did to provide for her a better life. She applied the same work ethic to school and finished top in her class, though her pursuits were far from the academic. Her parents worked in the wine industry and she wanted to as well. With a small bit of support from her parents she started up a business right out of school.

Of course, something else happened. In a series of coltfriends and dates she managed to get herself pregnant and gave birth to her first and only daughter, Mi Amore Cadanza. With her parents helping to raise the little one at first, she decided that the best way she could ever hope to give her daughter the life she deserved was by making her business a success. She threw herself into it, her very own vineyard, competing with several of the top Roaman brands. Day and night she labored intensely to make sure it was a success while trying her best to raise her daughter.

It was not easy. She faced stiff competition and while she loved her daughter, juggling the demands of being a working mare and mother was difficult at best. She wanted desperately to succeed and focused more on her work, with a belief that once it was a success and she could get the help she needed she could pivot back to Cadance. That day never came. Amore Winery had some success but it could never surmount some of the considerable obstacles it faced and eventually failed. At the same time she spent so much time on her work that she was never the mother Cadance actually needed.

When Cadance's ascension came and Celestia offered to take her to Canterlot, Amore Della Familia agreed. It broke her heart. While she had never been the mother Cadance wanted, she had tried to be the mother Cadance deserved, somepony who could provide her everything she could ever need. By trying to have it all she had received nothing. This sense of failure made her believe that Cadance deserved something better, something more, and that she couldn't give that.

After Cadance left she went to work for one of the Vineyards that had put her out of business. She changed her name to avoid dragging Cadance into any of her failed affairs and contented herself with being good at her job and proud of her daughter from afar, even if Cadance never saw it.

Personality:

Barbera Red has very high standards when it comes to herself. She is prim and proper, well-breed and takes care of herself to a high level. She is exacting and demanding of herself which leads to second-guessing and regrets pervading her thoughts, leading to large amounts of self-doubt eating away at her capacity to do things. Her sense of perfection is such that it would drive others into fits if it was directed at them but alas it is not. At everything she attempts she gives full effort, and generally will do so several times. However, once she has abandoned something, she will rarely come back to it. She doesn't react well to true failure

Indeed, she expects others to maintain their best selves, but has far greater allowance for the foibles of others. She can be very forgiving but as others fail she tends to want to take the reins. Competency is desired in others but not expected. As it goes however she does not often find others to meet her own personal standards. As she has grown older this hasn't affected her friendships but has impacted her ability to formulate romantic bonds.

She has an easygoing and breezy sense of humor that is compounded by a degree of shyness. She doesn't warm up to strangers very quickly, being polite, kind, and guarded. Most vitally, she never reveals her past and is very much a mare of the moment. She takes life day by day and week by week, with few long term plans and commitments. Rarely is she the one to propose a large gathering or party, but she almost never passes one up.

In public she is considered a proper and kind mare. In private, in moments of reflection, she is full of regret and doubt about her past. But she is also filled with a certain resolve, that the way it turned out truly was the best for Cadance. She is willing to be who she is now if it is what allowed Cadance to become who she became. She follows her daughter's story very closely, keeping newspaper clippings and projector movies of her events at her house.
