Seaspray
Hi,Just something I found curious on the last episode "Secret of My Excess". This is a bit geeky I admit! From the wall charts at the doctor and vet offices; it's interesting to see that Ponies have much smaller brains (relative to their body size) than dogs!Notice the chart in the Doctors office (I'm guessing it is a Pony since that's what the doctor usually treats).Compare that to the dog chart at the Vet's office. Skye
Well yeah, have you -seen- how big their eyes are? (Just kidding, this is a cartoony vehicle XD )
Seaspray
Sure thing it makes sense that the Pony's huge eyes are accommodated by smaller brains! I'm guessing the artist/animator put that in deliberately as a joke.
Ginger Mint
hi hiBig eyes would take up quite a bit of space. Also, the small brain might be why Twilight Sparkle can take an anvil to the head.
DaBatGuy
Also the diagram is in a pediatrician's office so it's probably the underdeveloped brain of a foal. It would definitely explain the CMC's crazy behavior.
Dessa
Spoilered for largeness.Looks like horses brains are really small.Whereas dog brains are relatively larger:Carnivores and omnivores tend to have larger brains, because they need to be smarter than their prey to have a chance. But keep in mind that brain size doesn't correlate perfectly with intelligence. It's surface area that counts, which is why humans, with out wrinkly brains, are smarter than elephants. Ponies might well have a lot of brain folds you can't see in that clip posted there.

notdeathsongx3
Dessa is right, It's scientifically true as horses brains are quite small and a dogs brain is relatively bigger
Motion Paradox
Well it might be one of those things they have in shows where they show a doctor's office and the diagram isn't accurateThough he did say that he specialised in treating Baby Ponies, so maybe it's just babies that have the tiny brain which then grows rapidly or perhaps it only grows slightly in mass but it's more dense and has more connections than, for example, a human's brain (similar to how a pound of bricks weighs as much as a pound of feathers but one takes up more space than the other)
Ginger Mint
hi hiThe animators do seem to have taken it upon themselves to represent things with some degree of accuracy. Usually the birds and animals at least represent a decent understanding of anatomy. I guess they have to do something to earn the Educational and Informative symbol.
weesh
The animators do seem to have taken it upon themselves to represent things with some degree of accuracy...For everything but the ponies? They are cute, but there is only the most superficial resemblance to equines going on here. weesh
I agree Dessa. My point is merely that aesthetics is given priority over realism. They made the right choice too.
Ginger Mint
hi hiPonies might be stylized and have some exceptions for comedic value, but for the most part, they still work like real ponies. Their ears fold back when they're scared, their back legs bend the correct way, they're animated with real pony gaits when the walk, trot or gallop. Even little things like Rainbow Dash fighting like a real wild horse after she was discorded, or Pinkie Pie rolling on the ground like a real pony in Feeling Pinkie Keen, make me think they like to show off their understanding of horses every now and again.

Dessa
Be interesting if a biologist were to draw an anatomical diagram that somehow explained how ponies could bend like they do in the show.
Kilmarnock
Those ears folding back? They can mean more than just fright. They also have a lovely habit of doing that when they're angry (which generally means I have about three seconds to get out of the vicinity before I have a horseshoe implanted into my ribs). Also, dang, Twilight's brain must be a prune to get all that surface area in such a small space! Tempest Rime
Just look at that same diagram. Clearly, ponies have no bones in their limbs.
weesh
Just look at that same diagram. Clearly, ponies have no bones in their limbs.Which is not surprising after you notice the lack of hooves. And the hearts...The artist wasn't even trying! bronyforever
The way I see it is that it's a cartoon, there are bound to be things that don't make sense.
Rosewind
That's obviously an X-ray of an earth pony. Unicorn/Pegasi brains are much bigger!
TheColtofPersonality
Nah these are cartoon bad anatomy troupes at work here , I would not read too much into it.
Ginger Mint
hi hiAs Dessa pointed out, this is actually an example of good anatomy. A horse's brain takes up a small percentage of their skull in real life.
