[Everfree Forest] Brought to Ruin (Full)

Tibbles

It was a less than prepossessing pair of structures that stood in this particular clearing in the Everfree Forest. The larger of the two was a stone cottage containing a surprisingly large collection of books and lab equipment currently out of use. The smaller was rather less sturdy than the cottage, a workshop of some sort judging from appearance. The reasoning behind it's light construction and the storage of most of the equipment in the main structure rather than within was soon to become apparent.

It was within the latter that Tibbles could be found at the moment, stooped over a desk before a small window as he takes some notes with a pencil grasped in his mouth. His preliminary notes completed, he nudges a pair of brass rimmed goggles over his eyes and gets to work.

An hour later the earth pony dashes from the door of the workshop and dives behind a nearby log. Scant moments later something in the workshop touches off, causing a gout of flame to erupt from the door and windows. Tibbles seems to panic for a moment but recovers quickly, galloping over to the cottage to grab a water hose just as the lab's roof catches and attempting desperately to put it out.

Rainbow Dash floated lazily on the thermals over the stone quarry, loving the warm way the air wafted up through her wing feathers, such a soothing feel which felt especially good on the wing she'd hurt recently. She'd started coasting through this part of the sky every morning to warm up, the relaxed state was the perfect way to start off a new routine! This morning she was going to coast over the cooler areas over the Everfree Forest, skimming along the edge of the uncharted gusts and eddies to get herself loosened up before launching into the stunning aerial maneuver she had planned.

She was ready for a number of odd currents, the cool air over the Everfree always had plenty of them ... but she wasn't ready for the wash of warm air and a sudden updraft! She tumbled tail over wing through the air, till she got herself steadied, and looked down in surprise. Where had *that* come from? The answer was lit up brightly beneath her - a house was on fire!

"Whoah!" she cried, gathering herself up. She shot straight up into the sky and looked around.. ah, there! She zipped off, leaving a rainbow streak behind her, to gather up a stormcloud, planting her hooves up against it to push it along the everfree back to the burning building. Hurry, hurry, hurry! She hopped up atop the stormcloud and started bouncing on it, knocking the rain out in a great deluge. The fire hissed angrily as the water washed down over it, joining with the water from the hose to fight the blaze.

Wow, this was a hot one! What was *in* that dumpy little shack that was burning so hot?

During his travels, Muffin Top had somehow managed to wander into the Everfree forest. Had he been more familiar with the area, or had just taken the time to stop and inquire about it from some local ponies, this probably could have been avoided. Now, he was wandering aimlessly through the dark forest, having long since wandered off path after spotting a the back of a cockatrice (easily identifiable to him, the cockatrice was a sort of boogeyman among young rock farmers). It was now looking as if cockatrices would be the least of his worries, as heard strange noises coming from all around him, among them being a rather intimidating low growl of a rather unfriendly sounding creature…

Then something else caught his attention, the smell of smoke filling his nostrils. His ears perked up as he looked around him, hoping that maybe he'd stumbled onto a nearby campfire, maybe another pony that could help him. Finding an small opening in the forest's dense canopy, Muffin spotted a column of smoke rising into the sky. Whatever was making that smoke, it surely couldn't have been coming from an ordinary campfire. A forest fire perhaps? Muffin may not have been the smartest pony, but even he knew it wasn't wise to go galloping towards the source of a possible forest fire. At the same time, however, considering his current situation, a fire still could mean other ponies. Maybe they needed help? As the earth pony weighed his options, he heard something big rustling some branches behind him. Quickly making up his mind, Muffin Top broke into a full gallop towards the source of the smoke, not even thinking of looking back.

After galloping a relatively short distance, Muffin Top came to grinding halt as he found himself in a clearing where two cottages stood before him, one of which was on fire.

"Shazam! That fella's house is on fire!" Muffin exclaimed, quickly cantering over to the other earth pony, determined to help in any way that he could.

Dunder was flying over the Everfree forest. He liked the name, it was ever free, but it meant that the forest was really free. This was the reason he was glad to be a pegasus. He could fly over the destructive freedom of the forest below him. Although, he felt sorry for the unicorn and earth pony travelers that had to pass through the forest on hoof.

He stopped to a hover when he saw a rising pillar of smoke in the distance. It was so big, it seemed like an entire city was on fire! He took off towards the smoke after the brief period of hovering. He saw a blue mare with a rainbow colored mane jumping on a cloud she had brought over the fire. He watched her for a moment before shifting his gaze down to the small shack on fire. He couldn't believe his eyes, such a small building was pumping out so much smoke, he would definitely ask what was inside of it.

First things first, he had to put out the fire. Or at least help. He retracted his wings so he could fall, heading for a dark blue stallion with a frizzy mane. He spread out his wings and flapped one powerful swipe to cushion his still hard landing. "What can I do to help?" He asked Tibbles.

Tibbles struggles to unravel the hose for a moment before finally managing to get it ready to use, grateful for the garden nozzle he had forgotten to put away as he turns on the water. Unfortunately, even though the nozzle allowed him the range to hit the fire without getting too dangerously close, it was still just a garden hose, far loo little to put an appreciable dent in the fire before him.

The situation seemed hopeless. Tibbles could only hope the fire didn't spread to the surrounding forest before it ran out of fuel as the hose was doing almost nothing. It was only when he had practically given up that he realized that he wasn't alone, a green earth pony galloping from the woods toward him. Returning his attention to the fire as the green pony approaches, he spots a rainbow wake trail shooting into the clouds out of the corner of his eye. Moments later, the source of the trail reappears, managing an impressive turn of speed as she pushes it over the flames before unleashing a torrent of rainwater upon them.

The blue earth pony quickly returns his attentions to trying to fight the fire, with the additional unexpected help, he might actually be able to put it out. He doesn't get to continue working on it much longer, though, as a second pegasus plummets from the sky, managing to slow his descent at the last moment to land on the ground. Tibbles wonders for a moment whether the two pegasi were of the same party as it speaks, replying urgently “Can you take this for a moment?” attempting to hand the grey pegasus the hose so that he can retrieve something from his house.

It was only then that he realizes the green earth pony had been standing there for a bit, Tibbles struggling for a moment to come up with something for him to do before settling on "Can you help him with the hose? I need to grab something." The fire was already beginning to seem less fierce under the combined efforts of the ponies, but it would take something more to put it out entirely.

Rainbow Dash looked up to see Dunder standing there, asking what he could do. It was a fire, what did he think? "Come here!" she cried, "Keep this cloud raining while I go get another one!"

Without waiting to see his reaction, she streaked off into the sky again, searching for another water-heavy cloud... she was back within half a minute, pushing the dark stormcloud before her, setting it up above another part of the little shack and starting it a-raining by pouncing on top of it, too.

Rain Maker was lazily circling above Ponyville, an area she knew well. She used to live in Cloudsdale, after all. The Everfree Forest stretched out next to her, but her destination was Manehatten, later in the day. As usual, the adventurous author had her saddlebags on tight , making sure they didn't slip off as she flew. In the bags were her most important items...a few journals and writing utensils to jot down whatever she saw for her next book.

As usual, she looked right and left idly as she flew. As she looked to her right, she noticed a column of smoke...in the Everfree! That wasn't normal!

The possibility for a huge adventure, or at least saving the day, was too much of a pull for Rain Maker, so she quickly banked to the right and kicked her wings into high gear. She wasn't the fastest of flyers, but she was fast enough, and quite agile too.

She made it to the fire, seeing it was a cabin below. A trio of ponies on the ground were uselessly trying to put it out with a small hose, while Rainbow Dash, a pegasus she knew from sight alone, was streaking off after leaving a cloud behind. Rain Maker flew down and landed on top of the cloud, not having heard the instructions to Dunder to keep it raining, and started to jump on it, coaxing water out of it. She looked up at Rainbow Dash, then down at the ponies below. "Shouldn't this be out by now?!" she asked, in a bit of a panic.

Muffin Top turned to Dunder after hearing Rainbow Dash bark orders at him. "Go on an' help her, I'll take care of this." Muffin said, taking the hose from the pegasus and holding it between his hooves. Having not grown up in a house with any sort of plumbing, he wasn't used to using something like a hose. He had a bit of a hard time handling it at first, nearly dropping it a couple times, but soon got the hang of how to handle it. Although at that point, the rain was making more of a difference than tiny little garden hose. But the earth pony still did his part to help, holding hte hose tightly between his hooves while being soaked by the rain from Rainbow Dash's cloud. Although he couldn't help but look around for the other earth pony, a bit curious as to just where he would disappeared to while his own cottage was on fire.

Dunder Blust held the hose in his hooves. He looked down at it and then shifted his gaze to the fire. The hose didn't seem to be doing much. But he shifted his stance to keep the hose spraying at the fire. His concentration broke when the rainbow maned mare called for him. He turned to hand the hose back to the green earth pony, but he already took it. "Spray for the base of the fire. And see if you can get a little bit closer." Dunder s he walked backwards, away from the green pony.

He took off into the air and hovered beside the cloud. He wasn't a weather pony, he didn't really know what to do to make the cloud rain besides jumping on it. He flew up on the top of the cloud and stood there for a moment before remembering that he needed to help with the fire. He started jumping up and down on the cloud. He weighed more than the rainbow maned mare, causing the cloud to spill more water.

Tibbles leaves the other ponies to deal with the fire as he gallops into his house, skidding to a stop amongst a room full of equipment and piles of books. He was free to put something together to deal with the source of the fire now that the secodary fires under control and there was no longer a risk of the conflagration jumping to the nearby forest. Water was all well and good for conventional fires, but only he was aware of the source. The blue earth pony trots over to a shelf serving as home to a plethora of beakers and canisters, skimming over their labels, plucking one or two out of the collection and setting them on a nearby writing desk with two empty beakers, one about twice the size of the other.

Once he had everything set out, he begins to work, rather haphazardly measuring a number of dry components into the larger beaker. Once that was out of the way, he takes the smaller beaker, filling it with a aqueous solution of some sort before setting it in the larger beaker, stopping the latter with a large cork. His makeshift extinguisher ready, he plucks it off the desk, being careful not to allow any of the liquid in the smaller beaker to spill into the powder. That was the last thing he needed.

Emerging from his house once more to find things still under control thanks to the efforts of the other ponies, he makes a bee line for the door of the burning shed. He tries to get as much momentum behind himself as he can before bowing his head low, swinging it back up as he flings the beaker inside. Finally he changes his path to avoid charging head first into the flames as the beaker flies through the frame.

  • 2 weeks later...

Rainbow Dash peered down curiously as the owner of this shack went running off... didn't he want it put out?! The deluge of water the two clouds were releasing upon the shack weren't going to last forever - and of course, the roof was keeping it from getting inside. Dash narrowed her eyes... This might require a bit of demolitions to destroy part of the building, just to keep the whole building from being consumed... a grin started to spread across her face. One Exploding Rainboom coming up! Her wings started fluttering in preparation.

The strange pony came rushing back to the shack, a flask in his teeth. NOW what was he doing? Was he expecting to carry water one flask at a time to try to put out the flames? Dash sighed. Eggheads. She shook her head and got ready to dart off far enough to pick up speed on the way back ... when suddenly there was a loud FOOOMP! inside the shack. Foam erupted out of every window and door, and out of the holes and cracks burned into the roof. One jet of foam caught her right in the face, and sent her spinning backwards through the air in surprise, landing unceremoniously on her tail amongst the bushes, with foam dripping off of her face and hooves and spread wings.

She wiped one hoof across her eyes to clear them, and looked up at the shack. The fire... seemed to be out! "What ... was *that*?" she asked in amazement.

Muffin Top remained in the same spot as before, combating the inferno with the tiny garden hose. He did not seem to be discouraged by the fact that their combined effort didn't seem to be doing too much to stop the fire and the tenacious earth pony didn't intend on moving from where he stood until the fire was completely extinguished. Turned out that he wouldn't have to wait too long as he saw the earth pony from before run past him and to the door of his cottage. Thinking that he was attempting go inside, Muffin considered dropping the hose and going to stop him until he saw him stop just short of the burning building itself and throw a flask into the blaze. Before he could even think to ask him what he was doing, Muffin saw a massive stream of foam erupt from the doorway to the cottage, throwing the owner of the cottage back with its sheer force and sending him plowing into Muffin himself.

The blue earth pony landed on top of Muffin, both of them disoriented and covered in foam. Muffin wiped away the foam from his face with his hoof, looking over in the direction of the cottage to see that the fire had been replaced with foam. "Well whattya know? I guess that worked!" he said, turning to the other earth pony with a congratulatory smile on his face, although still not entirely sure of just happened.

Rain Maker was too distracted preforming her namesake with the help of Rainbow and Dunder, not noticing the pony run into the shed, until the sound of the foam expanding out and covering the fire. The heat was gone, as was the sizzle of the water on the fire. She was mostly safe from the blast of foam, but she still hopped down from the cloud, gliding to the ground toward the jump of foam and ponies that was Muffin Top, Rainbow Dash a few feet away, and the owner of the cottage. She landed among the foam, looking around and chuckling.

"That was pretty cool." she said with a grin, walking over to help Rainbow Dash out of the foam heap she'd fallen into. "That was some crazy fire. I've never seen anything burn like that." she commented, looking back at her compatriots in trying to help get rid of the fire.

Dunder Blust was just pouring rain on the fire from the cloud. He heard a sudden, deep explosion that startled him. He laid down on the cloud and peeked over the side down at the small cottage overflowing with foam. Even though it created such a mess, it extinguished the flame and that was good enough. He saw another pegasus fly off the same cloud. He hadn't even noticed the mare for he was too absorbed in stopping the fire.

He pulled himself down off the cloud and flew in a nose dive towards where the mare had flown. He hovered beside her, "Sorry if I ignored you. I was pretty busy making it rain." Dunder apologized. He rubbed the back of his head and smiled. "But what is your name? My name is Dunder Blust."
