  1. This is something I raised in a different thread, but now I have charts. CHARTS! :D

    characterfocuscharts.jpg

My favourite kinds of episodes are ones that focus on the relationship between two of the mane six characters. My reasons are that this gives both characters enough room for development, and also serves as a chance for their friendship to be evolved and deepened.

It's fair enough to break these episodes up with single-character-centric episodes, and CMC episodes and the like, of course, that keeps things interesting.

In season one, we got a lot of these 'duet' episodes, but there are still some gaps for ones that haven't happened yet.

In season two the writers seem to be focusing on more sideline character relationships, EG. Rarity and Sweetie-Belle, or Applebloom and Granny Smith, which is fair enough, but there were plenty more possibilities for mane six interraction left over from season one!

I've been thinking about it, and I think this is the single reason I don't like season two SO FAR as much as season one.

It could all change, of course, we've got plenty of episodes to go yet. But there's my opinion on the matter.

On the charts, the terms 'All' and 'Single-Character' are kind of interchangeable, because it's difficult to define where one stops and the other starts. I'm pretty sure these charts are fairly accurate, though.

  2. Erm. I haven't seen anything like that. If you mean in fanfics, then just don't read those kinds of fanfics >.> I haven't seen any 'mature subjects' being posted. I'm sure they're out there, but it's not like they're hard to avoid, and it's not the majority of bronies doing it. Just some.

  3. I'd like for this to be a Big Macintosh bonding with Apple Bloom episode.

    This. So much this.

Unfortunately, we've already had an episode this season with a moral about siblings, so it's not likely :-(

However, if the whole Apple family is involved in this contest, SURELY that means more actual dialogue for Big Macintosh?

  4. This is an issue that has been raised before, and it does pass over my mind at times too.

I guess I content myself with the idea that, as long as we need it (the show and the subculture) it'll be here, even if that sounds unrealistic.

Also, even if it does 'fade away', there will always be some bronies remaining - you can find people hanging steadfastly to fandoms for shows that died out long ago, still going strong, and considering how powerful the fandom of FiM is, it's going to leave a lasting impression, whatever way you look at it.

It's hard, but I guess I'm trying to say live in the present, and let tomorrow take care of itself :)

And for me personally, FiM has had such a big impact on my aspirations and in influence on my passion for cartooning that I don't think I'll ever forget it. I may not always be a super-fan, but it will always have a special place in my heart and mind from now on - I'm certain.

  5. I picked

    1) Big Macintosh - he was my favourite supporting character from his first appearance. He doesn't say much, because he doesn't need to, but somehow he still gives off this vibe, if you ask me. He seems like a really cool, easy-going guy, and probably pretty dependable since he's co-running Sweet Apple Acres.

    2) Discord - Brilliantly acted, and I loved the little chaos quirks that he brought with him, like drinking the glass instead of the chocolate milk, and then tossing the milk away only for it to explode in the background. Gets me every time. On the other hoof, I didn't notice Luna on that list, and I probably would have voted for her. I think season 2 Luna was a really interesting character, and the creators did something rather brave in taking her in an unexpected direction. A large portion of the fanbase probably mourned the loss of Woona, but a character who is out-of-date by 1000 years is both interesting and entertaining, and that was really well portrayed with her season 2 reveal.

    3) Less strong opinions on this one, but I went with Soarin'. Based on 'Best Night Ever', he seems like a stalion with simple tastes. I can appreciate that. And yet, to be on the Wonderbolts, he must have some serious flying talent. Simplety backed up with sheer talent is always a good recipe if you ask me ^_^

EDIT: I actually have no idea what I'm talking about. I totally voted for Fancy Pants in the second category. It's too late in the night for me. Or early now, actually. Anyway, I picked Fancy Pants because he subverts the snooty conventions that all the other Canterlot ponies showed, and so he's a character with more than two dimensions, and I don't think he would appear in lesser cartoons. Furthermore, he's kind of a symbol of the idea that, if you do what's really right, sometimes things will fall into place even if you don't think they will. Discord and Luna still awesome too though :P I'm going to sleep now.

  6. Hrm... what if alicorns weren't born, but rather made?

Like, a pony is born as a regular Earth/Pegasus/Unicorn, and at some point, *something* happens that upgrades them to all-powerful, immortal alicorns, thus giving them the right to rule?

Very unlikely, of course, but I just thought of it and thought it would be a cool idea. If this was the case, it would make a really interesting flashback fanfic to see Celestia and Luna as regular fillies.

It would also explain why there are so few of them (this upgrade would obviously be a rare occurrence) and no males.

This new Cadence pony could be a new alicorn, or one from the past that isn't around any more for whatever reason.

  7. I pretty much agree with what everypony before me has said. We're not asking the world - the show is fine as it is, that's why we love it so much. Outside of the show, I definitely think more could be done for the franchise, and, again as everypony else says, more accurate toys are a good place to start.

  8. We've never had any shortage of new toys that SHOULD be made. Just a shortage of ones that it's likely ever WILL be made.

For a massively successful toy company, Hasbro's really being kind of slow, turning a blind eye to bronies when it comes to merchandise. I understand that, since we're not their original/standard target market, and maybe they're scared that we're not a reliable source of income, they might not want to throw all their weight behind show-accurate toys for us, but would it be such a big risk to maybe make a trial of one set of toys that are aimed at us? Something like the gift set but with all the mane six, a non-pink Celestia, pets that resemble their animated counterparts. If they did that just to test the waters, and saw how eager a lot of us would be to purchase, I think they might open their minds a little to whom they were marketing their products to.

  9. Well, it's a story of ups and downs in my experience. I tend to drift in and out of RPing, and it often gets to the point where I have to force myself to go to the computer, find the thread and type out a reply. Then it's not so fun.

On the other hoof, I've been a part of so many epic moments through my time RPing, and at times I've truly felt like I was part of another world. I wouldn't give that up for anything.

So, in my opinion, the pros outweigh the cons, even if it doesn't always seem so.

  10. Totally the same story here, man. I'm pretty sure that now we're back to one episode a week we'll be golden though ;)

In my opinion, I think it was the three week break from episodes that did it to you.

I had started feeling the same way, until last night, I remembered the new episode was today. (Still need to watch it :D)

The fanbase was over running the show during the three week period of no episodes, so it kind of felt like the show wasn't 'on" any more.

Being a brony born of Season Two, I can't imagine how the older fans among us survived the great drought between seasons... I don't know... if I'll be able to do it... when the dreaded No Pony season comes around again :scream:

  11. Okay, so, we've got

Some great comedy (the Granny Puppet scene almost had me in tears),

Awesome animation and magic-y stuff with the zapapples,

Cool new monsters in the timber wolves,

A moral I thoroughly approve of (even if it wasn't spoken about directly),

And that epic little lecture from Granny Smith. At the end of it I was gawping with the rest of the class, thinking 'Wow. Granny Smith is kind of a badass!'

    Pretty nice episode in all.

    But it needs MOAR FRIENDSHIPS.

Seriously, only ONE out of the SIX mane characters? Their interractions are becoming more and more sparse, and those are the characters I watch the show for. I like the Cutie Mark Crusaders well enough, and I've got nothing against Applebloom, but I miss when every episode had the mane friends actually interracting with each other in some way more than a passing encounter or a song :( On second thought, maybe it's just Twilight I miss in every episode :P

So the agreement is that there was no Derpy today? That's fair enough - her last appearance was in-your-face enough to warrant a break from the derp, I think

I was disappointed that Big Macintosh didn't have more to say, though. He's my favourite non-mane-cast pony, and in the first few minutes of this episode, I saw him and said "Don't say Eeyup", and he went "Eeyup!"

Why won't they give you more dialogue, my red-coated friend? Why?

I know he said *something* at the beginning, but it was all mumbled in with Applejack's and Applebloom's saying the same thing.

  12. Nopony's made a thread about it yet, so allow me! :)

We have the episode names of the next two episodes after 'The Super Speedy Cider Squeezy 6000' (can't believe I managed to memorise that title...).

The first is called 'Read it and Weep'. It's going to be another Rainbow Dash episode, airing on the 4th of February, and it comes with the synopsis:

"Rainbow Dash secretly discovers the joys of reading when she's laid up in the hospital."

Now, while I was as put off by Mare-Do-Well as the next guy, and disliked having two Dash-centric episodes side by side as we did, I'm actually looking forward to this one - it sounds like they're going to do something different and interesting with her character, which she deserves, and I can't wait to see how the whole thing takes place. Considering the topic, perhaps Twilight could play a role in this episode too?

The second title is 'Hearts and Hooves', is going to air on the 11th of February, and comes with no synopsis, but we're (EqD) assuming that it's a Valentine's Day themed episode (or whatever the equivelant is going to be in Equestria). If that's the case, it's going to be another interesting episode, since the only mane character actually attracted to another character so far has been Spike toward Rarity, so unless it's going to be another Spike/Rarity episode (which I can't see happening for a while, since they've taken care of that with 'Secret of my Excess'), it's going to mean some other characters developing likings for some other other characters.

What are everypony's thoughts on all this?

  13. I believe that... it's cartoon logic. Just one of those fantastic, inexplicable things that works simply because it's in a cartoon, and nopony questions it.

Alternatively, upon giving birth, all mares are blessed with temporary psychic abilties, and are able to take a quick peek into the future in order to know what to name their child, before losing said gift again.

Yeah, I'm gunna go with the first one.

  14. I have to say, I've been pretty lucky with people around me and my being a brony. They either agree with me, find it vaguely amusing, or just ignore it entirely, which I'd much prefer than having a negative response like that.

My only advice would be the same as Conor's - try and talk to them, but to be honest after what they did, I don't know if I could personally find the strength to do so. If you can, then you're a better man than I.

It may not seem like much of a consolation, but we're here for you at least, and if you want someone to talk to without being judged for anything (it doesn't sound like the people you know can offer such a thing) than I know I'm not alone in offering my full attention to you - PM me, if you ever feel like it. :)

  15. I'm sure everyone has these kinds of words that they repeat endlessly, but since nopony's pointed mine out to me, I can't think of what it might be. I try to keep my vocabulary relatively mixed up. Once, during spoken conversation, I realised I'd been replying with "Well, yes." quite a lot, just because I couldn't think of anything else to say.

Ooh, actually, I say 'I suppose' and 'I don't suppose' quite a bit.
