I like how his mane and tail have subtle different colors in them. Pure black always seems so flat to me, but I know some people like it a bunch.

Thanks. Yeah I never use pure black or pure white if I can help it. But it can work pretty nicely for some styles, especially styles that still use solid blacks for shading. I mean, imagine a Mignola piece without those great floods of black... it wouldn't be the same XD As for ponies... I don't think I've ever actually seen a pony pic done with solid black shading O.o

Te he, I was explaining to my sister that I think it went down something like this: Pinkie Pie managed to convince Rarity to let her help fix up her mane one morning, and Rarity bregrudgingly agreed, so they sat down in front of the mirror, and Rarity manages to say "Okay Pinkie, now it's very important that you don't--" And then Pinkie nom nom noms.
