  1. I think My Little Pony Tales had a lot of good lessons for young girls.

Eh, thats debatable to be honest with you as some of the lessons were a little off

I also doubt you made it to the episode with the Alicorn, did you? Yes, I mean My Little Pony Tales for that one.

No I didnt, I only watched a small amount of the episodes and then moved on, the episodes i watched were:

    Just for Kicks

    The Great Lemonade Stand Wars

    The Tea Party

Sadly the selection of tales episodes at the time was small, so I could only base my opinion from those episodes

If there are better ones or recommended ones I should take a look at feel free to swing them my way.

So uh...what is it that you thought?

    Whom, me?

  2. This Wednesday marks the one year anniversary of my inception into bronydom and while I intend on making a post about it let me share some thoughts on the older My Little Pony franchises.

First of all I will mention that I never really watched the original series as a kid as my sister was never into My Little Pony, but I did see a few episodes of My Little Pony Tales and it is that what made me avoid ponies for so long but I will get to tales a little later.

Now in interest of fairness I decided to watch a vast majority of the older generations that I could online so I could give my full out and honest opinion.

    So lets start at G1:

G1 for me is an interesting thing to look at after watching FiM, keeping in mind that this was a different era I did my best to remain fair and this is no easy task when talking about G1.

Now I will have to say that both Escape from Katrina and Midnight castle are actually pretty decent, especially Midnight castle who I can see a lot of in FiM.

But if its one thing that caught me right away, is how bad the voice acting is and how utterly un interesting the ponies are.

I could not tell one pony from the other except the ponies that would become Twilight Sparkle, Applejack and Rainbow Dash in G4.

This is sort of a common problem in 80's cartoons but here it could not be any more blatant.

It lets you know its from the 80's with a large smack to the head no less.

Then I watched a few episodes and I came to the conclusion that this series is no better or worse then most of the stuff for boys at the time overall.

I cannot say more then that, as honestly it did not interest me as much.

Still its not too terrible and I may watch some of it again soon.

Then comes pony tales, and this is where I become a little more nasty.

First they don't retain most of the action or fantasy elements with this one and just stick to a format that practically all cartoons made for girls at the time do.

Now on one hand its kind of good they are trying to make the characters more human in character this time by giving the ponies bit more of a personality but when your characters do nothing but hang around a malt shop and talk about boys you get my ire.

You know going from a series with heavy fantasy influence to a series where a bunch of ponies talk about boys there is only one thing to ask:

What in the flying heck were you thinking hasbro? GAH!

Seriously between G3 I cannot decide which one I hate more and trust me G3 is next.

Now with all this said do I hate Pony tales?

Both yes and no, on one hand its nice they did try to make the ponies a little more realistic but it came with the cost of having mundane stories.

Now contrary to popular belief there is no G2 cartoon, some people think Pony tales is but no its actually later G1.

But G3 exists and boy sometimes I really wish it didnt.

Now first lets get to some of the positives about this generation as they are so few of them.

Firstly I have to say it was good to see that both Unicorns and Pegasi are back in G3 and some of the fantasy elements have returned... but that is all the things positive I can say about it as honestly G3 is a boring, half baked total piece of garbage.

First lets talk about the characters: What characters?

Seriously I thought G1 was bad but this is even worse, I cannot say anything good about any of them and that includes Minty who seems to be popular in that fandom.

Sorry but she does not really impress me as a character, none of them do IMHO.

    Secondly story: What story?

Honestly most the episodes I have seen are about birthdays and one episode was about a fashion show where everybody won (for petes sake!)

I watched the longer specials too like Princess Promenade and "A minty Christmas" and I will let Roger Ebert say what I cannot say.

Just replace movie with show and you get the gist.

Sad thing is that it got worse with the core 7 and even more worse with Newborn cuties, I practically snapped at that one and wanted to murder several people at Hasbro for that one.

    UGH! :wail:

So yeah those are my general thoughts, I honestly dont have much to say on any of them but still its nice to let people know what I thought.

  3. Prince Blueblood wasn't an Alicorn.

He also wasn't a toy, remember this is still Hasbro logic here and I quote myself:

This has almost always been something with this franchise, its all aimed at the three things little girls are (allegedly) supposed to like:

    Ponies

    Princesses

    Things with angel wings

This has been something that has appeared since G1, at least in the toy line.

Also Cadence herself toy wise was made to make up for the fact that Celestia herself used to be pink toy wise so why not make up a new pony now that Celestia is show accurate.

So I doubt we will ever get a male Alicorn.

  4. Yeah Faust has been gone for a while, and this season Rob Renzetti left the series so M.A Larson is taking over his role next season.

Jayson Thiessen is the new show runner from season 2 onward, I dont think he will let this series slip as he is aware on how much we like this series.

  5. Considering he's dealt with an insane fandom already for a good part of his career (Trekies) I'm amazed that he's this quick to call to arms for us! We must be doing something right, I mean did he do anything like this for his millions of star trek zombies?

Not really, I mean I know he is still unsure about this brony thing but I also know that all fanbases have good people including Trek

  6. In modern society its still a mans world out there, rather if you have feminist insight or the drive to make things better for women its still a very male oriented world.

And what a better way to reflect this then to look at our entertainment, there is still this mentality out there that girls shows should only be watched by girls and boys shows should only be watched by boys.

This kind of stigma has been around for a little while now but it is mainly extended from the 80's when gender separation was very important to networks.

Before this shows were more or less made for general audiences but then crept in female empowerment, both a good and bad thing for the industry especially where animation was concerned.

Boys had stuff like Transformers and G.I Joe and girls had stuff like My Little Pony and Rainbow Brite.

Gender association with both was hammered in for so long that with the recent Brony craze can instantly be seen as many as something sexually deviant and or wrong. And its no wonder when the very name “My Little Pony” conjures up images of tea parties and the occasional magical fairy princess.

After all how can any boy like something like that unless they have something wrong with them sexually?

But you see this is where I think that My Little Pony Friendship is Magic is a GOOD THING, rather if you like the show or the fandom or not having so many fans of the show cannot mean they are all some sort of evil perverted pedophile like most Brony haters make us out to be.

I myself am a part of that fandom and I know I dont appreciate being called some sort of sexual deviant for liking it.

For me the show is a fun hobby, something to play with and have a laugh and in this day and age I think we all deserve something in our lives to make us happy at least for a short while.

The show is a real bright spot in my dull and depressing life.

So how does this all relate to Legend of Korra you may ask?

Well once again it relates to gender stereotypes and or what shows can be made for boys and what kind of shows can be made for girls and Legend of Korra is more or less a boys show but with a female lead.

For a boys show to do something like that is just astounding, normally a show targeted at boys normally have a male lead but here Korra is a female lead.

This is a very good thing in my eyes, both shows could basically break down some gender barriers and finally end some of the issues most boys shows have and vice versa.

Like no longer having to need to have the token female or male, granted friendship is magic does have a token make character but stuff like breaking out of having token males or females will take a long time to establish.

I really hope for the day we no longer have to rely on “The Smurfette Principle” to get a female character in or “the one guy” to get a male character in.

Its been three decades of this sort of thing and old habits will be hard to break.

The animation age needs more like Korra and Friendship is magic, heck I wish all cartoons were like this as it would shift a whole new paradigm and pull at least kids entertainment out of the gutter.

This is the 21st century people, its time to start acting that way and finally get out of the 1800's with this stuff.

  7. Finally I have time to talk about this episode as Korra came on and I wanted to watch it.

And all I can say is that this episode was totally fantastic, utterly and totally fantastic.

I could really empathize with Twilight here with her relationship with her brother as its how it was with my sister.

I am the older sibling in my family and I was sad to see my sister move out and marry someone but I only wanted the best for my sister.

And I so totally called it with Cadence being some sort of shapeshifter, wow never before my typical wild mass guessing has paid off so well.

All in all a fantastic way to cap off season 2, sure the villains being beaten by the power of love might be a little cheesy but its good enough to pass as its not the mane 6 who save everything this round.

  8. What ignited in Twilight was the spark of friendship, that is the magic they refer to. (The show is called "Friendship is Magic") That is what activated the elements, and they naturally reacted to the pony that represented it. That is what creates the connection.

Yes but Twilight herself still has a lot of raw power inside of her, as evidenced in her flashback and some parts of the show.

She is the main reason why I think the pony's are the elements and not the necklaces/crown.

The other elements are a little less harmful then her, after all most of the other elements are personality traits rather then actual elements.

It would explain why Twilight is so powerful after all, I mean how can she be the only unicorn that seems like the Swiss army knife of magic?

Its not just because she is the student of Celestia or just representing the power of magic.

The mane 6 were in disharmony, so how could they use something called the "Elements of Harmony?" Especially when Twilight was affected, which destroys the magic of friendship, the effective link between the other 5.

Yes but if the stones are so important Celestia could have just gather them together again and send them out to other ponies, sure she said she lost the connection to them but she never explained why, I think Celestia is not telling them something.

And likely, Celestia was watching Twilight for a long time, knowing that she had powerful magic. She seems to know everything. Which makes sense since she is in essence a god. Also... Faustcanon is not canon. Its close, but until that is confirmed by the show in some way (it probably won't be) its technically not true canon. Most fans regard it as story canon though, because Faust was basically the original creator.

Yes but thats why I can sort of count it in

The elements must be utilized in unison. They need to be in harmony to work, along with their wielders. They even called the elements "THE MOST POWERFUL MAGIC KNOWN TO PONYDOM" in the first two minutes of the very first episode. They didn't suggest that it was internalized at any time. In fact, each time they are mentioned they talk about the elements power, not the power of the wielder. They existed for a long time before that, they don't even suggest when they were created, they only allude to them being around for an unspecified amount of time that predates Celestia.

Still I think that maybe Celestia knows something she is not telling the mane 6, she knows a lot about her kingdom and its history but she might also know about the hidden powers within someone.

In the end this is just a working theory, a work in progress based on what little we know here.

Just because its a theory doesnt make it a fact, in the end you are probably right but its fun to play around with theories like this.

  9. Actually Twilight said it quite clearly that second episode... They embody the SPIRIT of the elements. But that is not to say they are the elements themselves. That is just silly. Then Celestia would never have broken the connection. It is pretty evident that she embodies all the elements in one. She has shown elements of each, so when Luna was banished there should have been no reason why the elements connection would have severed with her. This was not the case, which means that there is some physical representation of power. Not to mention that the elements of harmony predated Celestia, and somehow had physical forms.

Actually my theory still stands pretty well, Remember in the second part of the series opener the five elements were allegedly stones and when Twilight realized that the spark that was supposed to be the sixth was ignited in her, its then I thought to myself that the stones themselves are not the elements, the ponies are.

And this is further backed by Discord in the season 2 opener as while under his influence the mane 6 could not beat him.

Think on it, if the elements were the stones dont you think they would have slain him right off?

If the mane 6 were only meant to represent the 6 elements dont you think the elements might have worked from the hooves of Celestia?

This is also kind of evidenced on why Celestia sent back all the friendship reports, and why she gave Twilight the entrance exam, after all Lauren Faust herself suggested that only Twilight had this exam.

She probably knew the mane 6 were in trouble, and that if it was the necklaces/ crown thingie that made the elements of harmony dont you think she would have taken a more direct role?

If Celestia is so powerful dont you think she would have stopped both Nightmare Moon and Discord and just used the elements?

I think after having to use the elements of harmony TWICE in the same lifetime, first against Discord and then against her own sister she might have realized the elements were too powerful and might have transferred them into living beings.

On their own the mane 6 cant do too much damage but together they can make a powerful weapon.

Hey this isnt the first time stuff like this has come up in fiction, it was a key plot in Sailor Moon after all.

Sure its known that the elements themselves existed before the mane 6 and I stated that its my theory that after the defeat of Nightmare Moon Celestia might have transferred their powers to the mane 6, she probably did it right when she knew Nightmare Moon was ready to come back.

It might be the main reason why she knew about Twilight, I mean after all why was it one unicorn that got her attention enough to become her student?

If not only for her to train twilight to hone her powers but something more?

If Twilight was meant just to repesent her element she should have known there was a chance she might become corrupted and just grab the powers for herself again.

In the end I am suggesting that the elements of harmony as we know them are just the keys, the real power is in the mane 6.
