It wasn't planned, AFAIK, but one of the older human cast members, and a prominent one, named Mr. Hooper passed away, and it was decided that instead of letting his character fade into obscurity the best way to honour his legacy was to address it in a lesson.

Note that this episode happened way before I ever was born, so I'm going off what information I can find. The only cartoon I personally saw addressing tough issues was Arthur.

I actually remember when that happened, and whjen they addressed that. I was little.. but I remember.
