  1. A very interesting thread...

It's only work if someone makes you do it. - Calvin and Hobbes

A life lived for others is a life well lived. - A mix of Albert Einstein and myself.

Without the liberty and freedom to pursue one's own desires, man will never truly be happy. And as long as those desires do not conflict with the rights of another, I will always fight for freedom and liberty; so that man may achieve even his wildest dreams. It is this, that is my dream. - Anonymous

  2. I'm of the opinion that the haters were in the wrong. While Bioware could very well have posted that picture just for PR (though I'm not so sure), that does not make the reaction of those who hated the picture any less immature. I get that not everyone likes MLP, but no one gets worked up if I post a picture of Pikachu, or some other cartoon. When I see a post of something I don't like or am uninterested in on any social media site, I ignore it, and I don't insult people who do like it. I wouldn't mind if they had said, "don't care about ponies" or "I don't like this." That's their opinion, and that's totally cool. But that doesn't justify the comments that I saw. I posted an image of some of the comments in the spoiler; they are rather distasteful.

And while I don't think the world of Bioware, I think that their response was very good and appropriate. They even mention that they share lots of fan content on their page, which tells me this wasn't so much a PR stunt as it was the Bioware facebook guys getting this picture sent in and thinking it was cool.

  3. I don't know what it is about this scene, but I cry every single time ;_;

The music is what makes the scene for me. It's an incredible piece of art. Were it not for that, I might actually just find it a bit silly... (Seriously, I can't not think "Team Rocket's blasting off again!" whenever I see it...)

For me, however, I have to go with the scene in A Canterlot Wedding Part 1 where Twilight's friends and Celestia basically decide she's a horrible pony and leave her alone, and then she sings a horribly depressing and sad song. :(

  4. Well, I don't know that my fear of spiders is quite strong enough to be a phobia. I have a very simple arrangement with spiders. If they don't wander towards me or stay where I can see them, they live. If they are charging at me, or just hanging out in my face, they die. I tend to be disgusted by insects and spiders in general, and I am a bit jumpy when I see them crawling around. After I notice them, I'll either just let them go or dispatch them as necessary.

The only phobia I am certain that I have is a fear of death by suffocation (or suffocation in general; this includes drowning). This is basically claustrophobia; going by Wikipedia, I have the fear of suffocation, but not a fear of restriction. Any fear of restriction is really because I'm afraid I'll start to suffocate. I have been in a few situations where I could not breathe, and it was the worst feeling I've ever experienced.

  5. I mostly stick with hockey and American football. I'm not as interested in soccer, and the baseball and basketball teams that I support are an annual disappointment. Plus, it's a lot easier to keep up with football games than any other sport because there's only one a week.

  6. I admitted it on January 16th, but you could argue that I became one a bit before that. I had spent the prior week watching episodes because I wanted to figure out why the heck so many people were talking about the show. After every episode, I would tell myself that I didn't like the show and I was only watching to try and understand why it was so popular. On the 16th, I realized that I had literally spent all of my free time in the last week watching ponies. All of my arguments sort of fell apart after that. It came at a great time too, and I'm glad I gave the show a chance.

  7. I'd like to take a moment to completely over-analyze the question. This is intended to be silly and not taken seriously.

First of all, I want to say that I am going to be applying Earth logic to Equestria, which is not something that I'm sure should be done. So the second part of this post will contain my thoughts based purely on what I know of the show. tl;dr at the end of this post.

To begin, I would like to look at the idea of an Empire, versus that of a Republic. Immediately, what springs to mind is a negative feeling towards Empire, but a much more positive feeling towards Republic. For a broad example, look at Star Wars: The Galactic Republic (Old and New) is portrayed as the good guys, whereas the Galactic Empire (and most Empires in galactic history) is portrayed as evil. Now, however, let's step back and look at each one more closely...

According to Wikipedia, an Empire is a geographically extensive group of states and peoples united and ruled either by a monarch or an oligarchy. There are two main types of monarchy; absolute and constitutional (ie; what you see in the UK today). An oligarchy is similar to an absolute monarchy, only the power is held by a few, rather than one. To delve in a little deeper, Wikipedia states that an empire is a state with politico-millitary dominion of populations who are culturally and ethnically distinct from the imperial ethnic group and its culture. For the purposes of this analysis, I will consider the Solar Empire to be one ruled by an absolute monarchy, where Celestia is the sole pony in control of Equestria.

Next, we have a Republic. Wikipedia offers a very broad definition; a Republic is a form of government in which the state is considered a public matter... and where offices of states are subsequently directly or indirectly elected or appointed rather than inherited. One example of this is a Constitutional Republic, which is what you see in the USA today, and it is this type of government that I will choose to consider for the New Lunar Republic.

Immediately, the only positive option that springs to mind is the New Lunar Republic. As someone born and raised in the USA, I find the concept of living in an Empire (where all power is concentrated in the hands of a single person, or very few people) abhorrent, and I sincerely hope that I never have to. I much prefer a constitutional Republic, where the power ultimately comes from the people. (If you disagree, I mean no offense; this is just my opinion.) As such, there is only one logical choice for me to make, and that is the New Lunar Republic.

However, I am using Earth logic and applying it to Equestria, which we all know

. Now, I want to consider the question within the canon of the show. In the show, we see Celestia as a benevolent ruler who has everypony's best interests at heart. Some argue that her absence during the Nightmare Moon and Discord fiascos must mean that she is a less than ideal ruler.

I do not believe that to be true. My understanding was that the only way to defeat NM and Discord was with the Elements of Harmony. As we all know, Celestia and Luna are no longer tied to the elements; rather, the mane 6 are. As such, my understanding is that Celestia was powerless to help. Celestia did stand up to Chrysalis, but wound up being defeated because the power that Chrysalis had gained from Shining Armor's love for Cadance allowed her to best Celestia. From this, I believe that within the canon of the show, Celestia is a good ruler who ultimately works to protect and help her subjects as best as she can, but she is not an all powerful being.

Luna has shown that she can be corrupted and transformed into a horrible creature that threatened to disrupt the peace of Equestria. I would be less inclined to trust her as my ruler, when Celestia has done no such thing. And in the show, everypony seems to generally be pretty well off. It would seem that the current government in Equestria functions very well and does not oppress its subjects, and so my concerns about a ruling Empire are invalid. Therefore, within the canon of the show, I believe that the Solar Empire is the best choice, provided that means keeping the current system of government.

But then the show only presents certain moments of Equestrian history for us to see. We have no way of knowing what else happens behind the scenes. For all we know, the show is a bunch of propaganda from the Equestrian government to convince us that Celestia is a great ruler and that when Equestria and Earth become merged in the distant future, we will accept her rule without question and she can put into motion her evil plot to take over the world and declare herself supreme ruler of man and pony.

    tl;dr:

  8. I currently do most of my gaming on PC, but that's more thanks to the Steam Summer Sale than anything. For consoles, I play PS3, and handhelds is split between PSP and playing Pokemon on my old Gameboy Color/ Advance SP. I'd love to have all the consoles, but I just can't afford that. I went with PS3 for the exclusives (read: Ratchet & Clank), since those don't end up on PC like many of the 360 ones do.

I do also run a few emulators for some of the older consoles, like the N64, cause mine have all died on me.

  9. These aren't all necessarily epic, but you did ask for some of the best musical scores I've heard...

The entire Warhawk soundtrack. Here are a few of my favourite tracks.

This soundtrack features heavy brass, and has a somewhat militaristic feel. It has many grand orchestral pieces to compliment the brass and symbolize the flight of a pilot in a plane. The game is named for the Warhawk which is an incredibly maneuverable plane, a joy to fly, and a nightmare to defeat unless you're actually talented... which I'm not.

Clear Skies. One of the tracks that played in the menu, against a backdrop high above the clouds.

The Warhawk. This is the main title theme.

Archer's Run. Possibly my favourite track in the entire soundtrack.

. This is a bonus from the spiritual successor to Warhawk. It's got a sort of futuristic western feel, which is appropriate given that the game is set in a sort of western style game with plenty of futuristic tech.

The inFamous soundtrack is great, but I think that in general, the only people who will really appreciate it are those who have played and loved the game like I have. The songs; particularly the last few, carry a powerful message that you completely miss if you've never played it. This is probably true for most game soundtracks, though.

This soundtrack features many unorthodox percussion instruments, to create a heavy urban feeling. The game is set in a city, and you are a superhero with electric superpowers.

. This plays at the beginning and during the final boss fight.

. The final cutscene, in which you find out a shocking truth.

. This plays in the very last part of the game, after you've beaten the final boss, and the main character is talking about his life as a result of what happened in the game. It always makes me feel a bit sad.

That certainly holds true for this next game... Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic. I get a terrible feeling of nostalgia every time I listen to these, and I have to go play the game. The last one in particular is hard for me to listen to, despite it being so good... because of what I associate the track with.

As a Star Wars game, you should expect a grand soundtrack. While not in the same style as John Williams, this music stands up very well on its own, and still fits in well with the Star Wars universe.

. Plays periodically around events involving Bastila.

. Plays during Dantooine outside of the Jedi Temple. It's very unique, and it's easy for me to recognize.

. I first heard this after Bastila... you know if you've played the game. Manaan was the last planet I went to. This song is depressing for me to hear because of that.

Jedi Consular. This is a bonus from the SWTOR MMO. The game isn't really as good as KotOR, but it's still enjoyable. The music is absolutely beautiful as well. I love the small flute pieces.

I'd also like to share a few songs from LittleBigPlanet. The style varies greatly from stage to stage, but this game had me smiling the whole way through.

As I said, the style for this game varies greatly.

. Quite possibly the happiest song in the game, and one of the most cheerful songs I've heard. It's a pleasure to listen to, and it makes me wish I could play the flute. Sadly, I'm a drummer... I think I'm a sucker for flutes...

. The exact opposite of the last one; this one is depressing and lonely... in a good way.

. The sort of theme for LBP. This one is just fun.

I could go on for a long time, but I'll end with Minecraft... The music is so simple, but it works incredibly well.

The music of Minecraft is very simple. Often it begins quietly and with only a few things going on at once. It gradually builds and adds in more instruments, then slowly fades away. It is not incredibly complex, but it compliments Minecraft perfectly.

(song title, nothing to do with mice) This track starts off very softly, but gradually builds.

  10. My username dates back to the time when Runescape was cool... Well, okay, I was in middle school, Runescape was a shiny new toy, and I was easily manipulated (this was back in the days of when Runescape Classic was just Runescape, mind you). I was very excited to start playing, and I couldn't wait to jump into the game. But I had to choose a character name!

Well, I'm terrible at choosing names. My only other online username at the time was derived from my actual name (partly because Yahoo hates me and wouldn't let me use anything else). I didn't want to use that though; my name is so dull and boring. I wanted something exciting! So I thought and thought for days; I kid you not. I took this very seriously. But the waiting grew to be too much for me. I gave up my search and picked the first thing that popped into my head.

Hobbes. No, not that Hobbes. This Hobbes. Thought really, I suppose they are the same thing. But I chose it for the stuffed tiger. Runescape didn't like that though. Not one bit. It told me that I had to add numbers, otherwise I couldn't play the game. It offered me a few choices. I chose hobbes574. And now you know... the rest of the story.

  11. Conor will be the mod for this game, and I will be assisting him. I will update the OP again when I find out how he wishes to run the game. PLEASE DO NOT SIGN UP UNLESS YOU ARE WILLING TO PARTICIPATE ON A REGULAR BASIS.

EDIT: Sign ups are now closed! Game 2 will start as soon as Conor has sent out all PMs and posts "Day 1 Start"

If you know all about mafia, feel free to skip to the bottom and add your name to the list!

Mafia is a classic party game. Each player is given a role and a team, and it is their job to ensure that their team wins. The two most common teams are Town and Mafia.

The game has two phases; Day and Night. During the Day phase, the Town will try to figure out which players are Mafia, while the Mafia will do their best to mislead the town. By the end of the day, the town will reach a consensus on who to lynch, and the selected player will be removed from the game. During the Night phase, the Mafia will talk amongst themselves via PM and select one person to kill. When a player has been removed from the game, they can no longer post in the game thread until the game has ended.

    Win conditions:

    - The Town faction wins when all Mafia have been captured.

    - The Mafia faction wins when they make up half or more of the remaining players.

    Typical Roles:

    Cop

    - Typically part of the Town Faction

    - At night, you select one player to investigate by sending a PM to the game moderator. If the mod replies “guilty” then that person is Mafia. If the mod replies “innocent” then that person is pro town.

    Doctor

    - Typically part of the Town Faction

    - At night, you select one player to protect by sending a PM to the game moderator. If that player is targeted by the Mafia at night, they will not be killed. If another player is chosen by the Mafia, the player selected by the Mafia will be killed.

    Mafia

    - Part of the Mafia Faction

    - At night, you may talk with your fellow Mafia and select one player to capture. Post your decision in the provided QuickTopic thread.

    Other rules:

    - Do NOT talk about the game outside of the game thread, unless your role specifies otherwise (ie, Mafia).

    - Do NOT post your role PM. You are allowed to roleclaim, but do not copy/paste anything from your role PM.

    - Do NOT post in the game thread after the Night phase begins.

    - Do NOT post in the game thread after you have been removed from the game.

    - Do NOT edit your posts during the game. You may edit by posting again after your first post, but clicking on the edit button and changing things is not allowed.

    - Mafia may only talk with the members of their faction outside of the game thread during the Night phase.

    - The length of the Day/Night phase is left up to the game moderator's discretion.

If you are interested in signing up, here's what you do!

    - Put your name in the list below (If there aren't enough numbers, add one!)

    - When the game begins, you will receive a PM with your role, and a link to the game thread.

    - After “Day 1 start” is posted, you may begin.

  12. As everypony gathered in the town square, preparing to send a team to investigate the good doctor's home for clues, two ponies stood in a small home outside of Ponyville. One was rubbing his hooves, recently freed from a pair of cuffs. The other was shrouded in darkness.

The first pony squinted and tried to make out the face of his saviour. "Y-you rescued me? Why? How?"

"I find myself in need of an aid. You happen to be just what I'm looking for."

    "Wait, what?"

"I'm a lazy mod. If I'm not online, I want you to help keep track of votes for me."

"Nah. Wait, yes! No? I mean maybe! Well, it can't be that bad. Anything beats sitting around doing nothing."

"Splendid! I'm sure you'll do just fine!"

Conor Colton turned around and left the room. The second pony chuckled. "Yes, go forth my new apprentice. Together, we shall rule this world!"

Conor Colton is now an assistant moderator. He will be helping to keep track of the vote totals, and he is allowed to end the day if a majority has been reached. This does not extend to night actions. Please continue to send all night actions to me.

  13. Ponies began to come out of their homes and make their way towards the town square. Friends were relieved to see each other alive and well, and the Mayor did a quick headcount. "Hmm... We're missing somepony. Would anypony be kind enough to check onthe good doctor?"

"Oooh, I'll go!" A young filly shouted eagerly and rushed off towards the doctor's home.

"Wait! You shouldn't go alone!" A pegasus pony flew after the young filly, quickly catching up. The two walked towards the doctor's house; the filly happily chattering away while the pegasus tried to crush a growing feeling of anxiety.

They arrived and knocked on the door. It slowly swung open, and the ponies peeked inside. The house was trashed; furniture was overturned, parchment and medical supplies were scattered everywhere, but there was no sign of the doctor.

The pegasus grabbed the little filly and flew as fast as she could back to town square. "Mayor! Mayor! Conor Colton is gone!"

    Conor Colton has been captured.

    Conor Colton was the Doctor.

    Day 2 Start!

  14. No Arrest

As the sun started to set, the ponies of Ponyville began returning to their homes. They didn't get very far that day in their discussion. Instead, they decided that it was far better to be patient than to wrongfully imprison one of their own. The loss of Derpy weighed heavily on their minds, but that only served to solidify their determination to end this threat to Ponyville.

The sun fell beneath the horizon, plunging Ponyville into darkness. Everypony locked their doors and began to prepare for a tense night. Hidden in the shadows, their enemies sneaked out and began their preparations...

    Night 1 Start!

    - Roles with a night action, please send me a PM with your decision as soon as possible.

    - Please do not post in the thread during night.

Update: I am setting a deadline for Night 1. The deadline is 6 pm MST/ 8 pm EST on May 22nd (tomorrow). This is subject to change, but will not be moved later than this time. You may expect Day 2 to begin sometime tomorrow evening.

  15. With 13 players, 7 votes is the majority.

No Arrest (7): DarkAura, Star1228, featherquill, SilverThorn, Sparkleheart, Conor Colton, Dunder

    SilverSwirl (2): SilverSwirl, DIego Havoc

    SilverThorn (3): MicroChip, Starfox64x, tyler008bon

    Vote table

As a reminder, the day will last for another hour and a half. If at that time there is a majority, the day will end. Also, please let me know of any mistakes with the vote tally.

    SilverSwirl (2): SilverSwirl, DIego Havoc

    SilverThorn (2): MicroChip, Starfox64x

    Vote table

Normally, I would end the day here since a majority has been reached, but as it has not yet been 24 hours and there are still a couple of players missing, I would like to give them a chance to post first. Thus, vote changes will still be allowed until the day ends. If there is still a majority by 5 pm PST/8 pm EST, the day will end regardless of whether or not the other players have shown up.

Also, please let me know of any mistakes with the vote tally.

A weighty choice is yours to make, the right selection or a big mistake. If the wrong choice you choose to pursue, the foundations of home will crumble without you.
