  1. Alright, here's a thematic issue I've been coming up against time and again for my character. I want to make the point that ever since he's started looking for work, he's come across a long run of bad luck. However, I don't want to alienate the reader by having a long segment of story dedicated to the putting-down of (what I hope is) a lovable character. Is there a way to emphasize a long, steady run of bad luck without making it a long, awful read about bad luck? I've considered making it into a literary montage, but I don't think that reducing the amount of time by THAT much will allow for the reader to appreciate the gradual emotional impact the events would have on the character. It would basically be: "I'm going out to be the best!" *insert montage of bad luck* "I'm never going to be the best." It keeps the reader from understanding the gradual fall from youthful optimism to depression to the (eventual) adult determination that will allow him to see his dream through to the end despite all the setbacks.

So, the short version of what I'm asking is: Do you know of a way to reduce a series of complicated events into a succint summary without a.) trivializing the emotional impact of the events on the character or b.) boring the reader to tears with full-fledged accounts of each failure?

First, you can start by stating the motivation or goal of your character. What does he want to do? Try to explain that in a brief one or two sentences. For example: 'She really wanted to be a writer. She didn't know what to do though.' The next thing you want to do is to explain each thing that happens to the character depending on how many things happens to the character. I say if you have 1-3 things that happens to the character before reaching another 'subject' then you can explain it in paragraphs. If more than that then you should do a few sentences under 5. Example for multiple events: 'She tried thins but failed. Then she did that and failed as well. She also failed at:a,b,and c. Finally, blah.' That's pretty much it! Tell me if you're confused or think it won't work over a P.M. If you are unsatisfied, it may turn into a week's conversation.

  2. I sent in TWO character apps and they BOTH got accepted but I cannot find them in the Accepted Apps section. I can only see them in My Content. I also cannot RP even though I got my apps approved. It even says on my apps that they have been moved to the Accepted Apps section but I cannot find them nor can I RP help me?

  3. Do you need suggestions for writing? have writers block? I can help! I can help you do most anything. I can give you ideas or names for characters even! I can tell you how a certain character would say things and all you need to do is ask. Want to talk privately? No problem. Just message me and I'll help you as well. Feel free to send me your writing samples and I can edit it for you.

If you think your problem cannot be solved within a short period of time,(1-5 days) then please message me and we'll deal with it.

Please post your quick-fix problems here unless you really don't want others to see it.There are however some things you must not do.

-Do NOT send me something that can be fixed in a few minutes. Post it here.

-Do NOT post mean things about the person's mistake.(Ex. How could you make that mistake?)

If you can do those two things for me then I'll fix your problem in a flash. I also can give you any ideas or anything writing related that's not a story. (I don't want to be writing novels for each and every one of you!) So send in your problem and I will hopefully fix it!

  4. Poll Update!

Discord is in first place with 9 votes. He is so shooting ahead! Next with 3 votes it's Nightmare Moon! Ties in third with two votes each are Gilda and Flim&Flam. Then, we have with 1 vote only: Trixie! All other options have zero votes so lets get voting everypony! This has been a poll update. See you next time! :kissy:

  5. Who is your favorite villain or minor bother? You know the villains like Discord, but what about the smaller part characters like Trixie or the Diamond Dogs? Even Diamond Tiara and Silver Spoon are considered since they bothered Apple Bloom in season 1 episode 12 and season 2 episode 23! There are so many. Who's your favorite though?

  6. Roleplay Type: World of Equestria

    Name: Artisa Stroke

    Sex: Female

    Age: Mare

    Species: Unicorn

    Eye Color: Light Green

Coat Color: A very (and i mean VERY) light shade of green.

Mane/Tail/Markings Color&Style: Her mane and tail are forest green with light blue highlights. It is put up in a ponytail and at medium length.

Physique: The same as an average mare like Twilight and the rest of the cast.

Cutie Mark: Her cutie mark is a paint brush with green paint on it.

Origin/Residence: Upper class area of Manehattan.

Occupation: Artisa is a painter and an artist. She paints pictures of landscapes and abstract art.

Motivation: Artisa has always wanted to get one of her paintings into an art gallery. She was once close until a huge mob of ponies came in because of a 'sale' and crushed her canvas.

    Likes: Painting and doodling

    Dislikes: Plain and blank things.

Character Summary: Artisa Stroke was born in Manehattan. Her parents are Brusher Stoke and Landlora Stroke. They are proud of their daughter for becoming a mix of a farmer and a sketch artist. Artisa's best friend since childhood was Glittarra Glam. They met in the Genius Academy for Gifted Fillies. The Genius Academy is a school for ponies who have special talents such as art or design. They do not need to have a cutie mark in order to apply. It is located around the center of Manehattan. The school is known for their art and sculpting classes but there are also more classes that do not relate to art such as technology or fashion. She got her cutie mark in art class in her former school. It was time to enter a painting into the annual art competition. She didn't know what to paint so she drew a bunch of lines, dots, and squiggles to fill the page. The judges were so impressed with her abstract art that they declared her the winner. That was when her cutie mark(a paint brush with green paint on it) appeared. She thinks her talent means that she is a great artist and it means that she can always think of something to fill a blank sheet. She is now a graduated student of Art Creation Academy and lives in a studio apartment alone. She creates art and then sells her work but, she never sold a painting to an art critique or collector. One thing Artisa's fails at is keeping it neat. Her home is filled with art/paint splatters/paper. She is a nice pony but cannot stank braggers, drama queens,and/or know-it-all ponies. She likes to 'attack' her problems by doodling to clear her mind. Artisa often likes to visit her parents who live about 2 blocks away from her home. She paints for them and tries to help them clean their home. The cleaning part usually ends up as the walls becoming purple or blue but, her parents are always happy about the new decor. Artisa likes to stroll in the park sometimes to get new ideas of what she could paint. She also loves the fresh air. Her favorite smell is the smell of clear, fresh air. She doesn't mid the wet paint smell but she prefers fresh air. This is Artisa Stoke's life.

Character Summary: Glittarra Glam was a Manehattan pony. She loves the busy streets and the fabulous shops. She especially likes her family fashion and jewel store: Glam Jewels and Fashions. The 'fashions' part was added when Gittarra got her cutie mark when she was a little filly. She wanted to buy a dress for her mother but all the ones she could afford were ugly. She thought that anypony could make a better dress than those dresses. Then,an idea for a dress popped into her head. She went to get materials to make a dress. When she gave her creation to her mother, Glittarra's cutie mark appeared. Her mark (roll of white fabric) meant that she was good at making clothing. It means that she loves to get ideas from not as good looking dresses. To Glittarra, Manehattan wasn't just some fancy city. It was home. The stores would all be full of ponies wearing the latest fashions. Fashion was highly important in Manehattan so Glittarra was always careful to not create a fashion don't. Glittarra Glam is still going to school. Fasion Academy that is. It's the top design school in all of Equestria where mares like her learn more about fashion. She lives in a 3 story mansion not too far from where her parents' condo is. Her best friend is Artisa Stroke, a famous artist in Manehattan. Every morining, Gittarra goes to Fasion Academy and then goes on to work at Glam jewels and Fashions. Glittarra also has a lot of fans in Manehattan wearing her newest creations. All of her dresses and clothing are one of a kind so there will never be a fashion embarrassment in the city.

Glittarra also went to the Genius Academy for Gifted Fillies. That is where she met her best friend: Artisa Stroke. The Academy is a school for fillies who are talented in things like art or technology. The school is best known for the art the students create. There are also other classes for fillies with other talents such as building things and designing clothing.

  8. Hi there, welcome to Canterlot! Since you're from NY, you'll be pretty close to Bronycon! Lucky!

WOW! I didn't even know about it! Thanks for letting me know!

Hi and welcome to the forums! Biggest tip I can think of is to just relax, have fun and be yourself. Since you like to read and write, you may want to check out the fanfiction section.

I was going to check out the fanfic section!

  9. About Myself: I play a lot of spots and love to read and write.

    How I found Canterlot.com: Online

How I became a fan of MLP:FiM: My sister said something so I checked it out.

My favourite main cast pony/s: Fluttershy,Rainbow Dash
Hi everyone! I'm new here(duh) and I'm from New York. I'm not in Manhattan by the way there are other parts of the city. Anyway...as you can clearly see I can sometimes get off topic and talk about whatever. If there is anything that I should know about that's not on the site or have any tips please tell me. I will pretty much need as much help as possible here. I son't work well alone and prefer examples and demonstrations rather than figuring things out on my own. I don't like it when people use incorrect grammar but I am alright with a few mistakes when speaking. I also have a habit of talking and/or writing A LOT so beware! :P That's pretty much it!
