How I became a fan of MLP:FiM: At first, I was avoiding it due to being over-saturated with it everywhere I went; kind of like hearing the same song on every station.

Eventually, I poked at the TVTropes articles for the series... and watched Lesson Zero.

My 'Welcome to the Herd' decoder ring arrived the next day.
