  1. Victory! ...

Okay, its not totally perfect, one of the cover boards came out just a tinge off (I'm trying to work that out) but overall, its not bad.

    >fig #1

Here you see the cover boards fully assembled. Do I really need to explain more?

    >fig #2

And here's what it looks like when you combine it with the book. No, its not glued together just yet as there are some other things I need to do beforehand.

I think I should sand the pages down a bit more, and then start applying the stencils for the raised (embossed) edges of the finished cover material.

But hey, its coming together! :D I'm rather excited!

  2. 133605075138.jpg

Here you see the early stages of putting together the cover. I'm using black card paper here to combine the cover boards.

I'm a bit concerned about my measurements here (as well as some of the badly trimmed bits of the board) but I feel it'll come together well :)

I should note that the black paper is not the final material for the cover, it just helps to bring the boards and the book's spine together (forming the base of an actual book). I'll later apply cut pieces that will act as raised (embossed) edges and then work in the final cover material.

But even then, I still wont be finished with this project.

  3. 133595929336.jpg

Finished sewing. Applied some backing to the book. Sanded the edges.

I'm exactly where I was at before I screwed up the last project with the gold leafing!

Now I can go and work on the cover. :)

But I'm going to take a break... I've been wanting to play some Skyrim for a while so maybe I'll go do that. c_c

Or heck, I sorta miss working on Spikes Quest, so maybe I should revisit that project again.

    So much to do!

  4. 133594209451.jpg

    25 sewn signatures later...

its 2 in the morning, maybe I should boil a pot of coffee... o_e

the method I decided to go for in the sewing process does seem to give the book a nice sturdy binding, but its a much longer and much tedious task. You can see where in some ares the thread kinda tangled up on me. That and there were some areas I skipped (not on purpose)

But all in all, its still holding together pretty stongly.

Also, no, that's not linen tape, its black card paper. Its just as effective in my opinion :P

Just seven more signatures to go! I'ma go fix that pot of coffee now :P

  5. 133589478931.jpg

Finally got around to folding and puncturing the signatures last night. This time I'm going for 32 signatures each (front and back signatures have two pages (one from each will be glued to the covers and then covered up by some inner cover decor) and the rest have six pages each. Do the math.)

And now I'm about to cut up the tape needed for sewing.

I cant mess up this time! :P

  6. 133574466682.jpg

Thanks to the few who left their opinions on the flawed book (over at the ponychan thread this is a copy&paste update). :) it was very much appreciated!

I've decided to go with the last reply's opinion (again, Ponychan) and use the flawed book specifically for experiments. That means I'll be starting all over again. :P But there's an upside and a good reason for my decision, and its not only related to the gold leaf error.

I've had another regret about how I sewed the signatures together. I was using a simple method for the sewing that is actually best used for smaller books. In using this method I neglected the use of linen tape (which is supposed to be held tight by the thread on the spinal area which helps to keep the signatures together) because I did not use the linen tape approach, the book has continually had a problem about staying perfectly flush. No matter how much I worked the sand paper along the edges, the more I tampered with it afterwards the more it just kept losing its balance and looking untidy.

I'm hoping to correct that with the next attempt here.

On a note, I did like the sewing method I was using on this book because it did a somewhat good job of binding each signature together. So I'm thinking about using that method with the linen tape somehow to ensure a max strength bind. We shall see how that turns out! :)

  7. So I went and did the foolish thing and took a risk...

I tried applying some liquid gold-leaf to the paper's edges. The result?

    133566961608.jpg

    >fig #1

It did its job, in only that it looks a bit rugged. Kinda like its been used before (I could try applying a secnd coat, but I'm kinda liking the rugged look here...)

    >fig #2

And here's the con of my experiment. The liquid gold leaf actually sort of bled into the edges. But it kinda gives the paper a somewhat antique distressed look.

But who am I kidding? I need opinions... Is what I did here a bad choice? Does it look like something I can keep working with or should I scrap this and start new, avoiding the gold edging until I have the proper equipment for it?

  8. A bit of an update (continuing from the progress as posted in the ponychan thread)

After a bit of press work and whatnot, I've done a bit of glue work to the spine area and now I'm sanding down the edges of the paper in an attempt to make everything all nice and even. A plus about doing this is that the edges of the paper now has a feathery cloth-like feel to it which makes it feel all the more like a book and less like a bunch of folded sheets of computer paper :P

I may even go as far as to gold-leaf the edges to make it look more ornate but I'll need to do a bit more research on how that's done and maybe a few experiments.

I'll continue to post more updates as I progress :)

  9. Hey, guys, I've recently taken a break from my work on Spikes Quest to start on some other projects thats been on my mind.

One of these projects is the study and practice of bookbinding, meaning I'm looking into crafting my own hard back books.

I've been practicing the craft for the past month or so and needless to say, I'm getting better at it :)

Now I'd like to take what I've learned and use it for the comunity in some way. So I'm going to start binding together some custom made journals, giving these journals such nice material such as leather (when I can afford it)covering and some nice elegant detail.

I've recently started on the first of these journals and I have been posting my progress over at Ponychan (thread: http://www.ponychan.net/chan/collab/res/37703.html)

I figured I should start a thread here too and post such updates :) If this project is a success I have an even BIGGER project in mind that the whole creative brony comunity could join in, but more on that later!

  10. > installs a plugin that keeps me updated on my DA messages

    > the plugin makes a splat sound upon each new update

    > some majorly 'official' MLP club sends a request to add my Hobbit comic to their collection

    > their club has thousands of members

    > I go "meh, sure" and accept their request

    > Splat splat splattiy splat aplat splasplaspla (and beyond)

    well my god... o.o

  11. AWESOME. I love 3d! I do have difficulty, however, viewing the furthest layer back. I can't seem to get the images to come together without losing everything, or alternatively, I can make the rear layer come together, but then the front makes no sense.

Related 3d ponyness you might dig: http://www.canterlot...__fromsearch__1

the 3D in this picture seems to vary in quality according to the person viewing it. Maybe its because of how far the background is shifted. Each layer is shifted 1 pixel accordingly to their number and there are 97 layers in all.

I hope my skill improves from each picture that I'll be doing in the future... :P

awesome link, btw and thanks for the feedback!

    > a bit more touching up

    > some foreground scenery

    > properly titled

    > signed & dated

    > framed

this artwork can officially be labelled as COMPLETED

though a the moment I'm having some withdrawal issues about converting it into 3D. Why? Well because I feel it looks damn good as it is.

But really...I dunno... I did promise a 3D image and I should deliver as promised. But maybe I should had went for a more simpler approach so I wouldn't feel so burned out just by looking at the image before beginning the proceedure. Maybe this feeling will go away by tomorrow.

I'd really like some opinions on the matter if y'all dont mind :)

    currently a work in progress...

This is the first of a series of artwork that I'm doing that I'll be converting into a 3D image so you could view it either on a 3DS (or other 3D devices) or through the traditional methods (stereo cross eye vision or the goofy red/cyan 3D glasses)

I've posted a thread on Ponychan (here: http://www.ponychan..../res/54417.html) but it hasnt been getting very much attention (I believe because everypony there thinks its strictly 3DS oriented, which it isnt...)

Anyway, I figured I'd at least post a thread here and hope for a better prospect from this wonderful community! :)

  14. Excited to see you here- i've been watching your stuff float by on EqD now and then, and I keep thinking "Whens that gonna come out?" xD

This is definetly a good place to post some updates as they come; our user base is growing everyday; and the visits are climbing a bit-scary rapidly! It sounds like you wont be needing a team- but if you find yourself in a situation where you might need some help or a more formal setup (sounds like you may be interested in that), let me know and we can talk in PM or over skype- my user name is Manestreams. We'll see what we can cook up :3

I'm trying to encourage bronies to share their talents here on the forums- I think we've got a community ripe with talent and interest; thinking about what just one pony (like yourself) has managed is really cool- but imagine what we can do when we team up. :3

Anyhow! Welcome to the forums, and sorry for the late welcome!

Hey, Manestream, thanks for the response :)

Yeah, the project is slow going but the more patience I (or anybody else) has with it, the better it gets!

Anyway, as promised I hope to have a 4th demo up and ready early next moth.

Here's the most recent screen capture from the project if anypony is interested:

  15. ==old copy/pasta from the Ponychan thread===================================

    Story:

The Diamond Dogs are at it again! They've kidnapped the main six and have retreated back to their underground abode. Its now up to Spike to venture down into this massive subterranean world where he must explore every nook and cranny, find items (and special gear) to help him on his quest to rescue his friends. But is there more to this story than there seems?

    Game style: Metroid/Castlevania/Cave Story

Pretty much you play as Spike and explore a massive underground world (with a few exterior connections). You collect items (and gear) to help you proceed to hard to get locations. Also as you rescue your pony friends they each help you in certain ways throughout the game (Rainbow Dash could be summoned to transport you to a certain location, Fluttershy's calming magic is needed to calm the dark settings of certain rooms for you to progress, Twilight Sparkle's magic is needed to move certain blocks for platforms, etc, etc)

    ======================================================================

As a note, the description above is over a month old but the concept remains the same. I've been working hard on this game programing first with Blitz 3D and then I converted the code line by line to Blitz Max which was a full week's project in itself.

The project was first unveiled in /collab/ on Ponychan, you can find the thread here: http://www.ponychan.net/chan/collab/res/10544.html

and later I started a blog on Blogspot concerning the project: http://spikeqdev.blogspot.com/

and then a twitter account: http://twitter.com/#!/SpikesQuest

The project has had two honorable mentions on Equestria Daily which you can find here: http://www.equestriadaily.com/2011/07/g ... quest.html and here: http://www.equestriadaily.com/2011/07/s ... emo-3.html

There are a few old test demos that you can play around with though they are severely dated (last test demo was before the code transfer) you can find these demos here: http://spikeqdev.blogspot.com/search/label/Test%20Demos

Since the code transfer to BMax, the project has progressed greatly and most of the bugs reported from test demos 2 and 3 have been fixed. The 4th test demo is scheduled for the 7th of next month (September) and I hope to make it worth the wait! :) - (I'm hoping to make it available for Mac and Linux for that release)

By posting this thread I am not trying to find help for this project but rather I hope to generate some interest (I prefer working solo so to avoid pointless team drama). I will be opening up to the brony community later on seeking musical talent for the game by releasing a production package that will include the desired freeware music composing software (orgmaker) and a few other things that will help guide the would be composers with the right mood needed for the music. And also I'm always open for beta testers when the test demos are later released for that purpose :)

Also I should note that I was guided here by NinjaFanpire who kindly suggested that I should come here and request a sub-forum for my project. If I am granted my wish here then I shall put it to good use, making logs of items, enemies, locations and the occasional update about the game's progress.

Until that request has been addressed I'll continue to use this thread to post simple updates and other things.

For now I need to get to bed. :P I've gotten to where I hate staying up so late because it effects my production time in all the wrong ways.

Let me know what you guys think, and until morning I bid you all good night!

  16. Hey, Canterlot bronies! Thanks for the kind and warm welcomes, this does seem to be such a wonderful little community

sorry I haven't been posting much, I've been busy coding on the game project. I'm hoping that by some time tomorrow I'll have something nice to show off.

this being my third post in these forums should break the restrictions and I'll be posting up a new thread later concerning Spike's Quest.

Stay tuned if your curious enough! :D

  17. Greetings, bronybros

I am Misterbull from Ponychan. You may know me for the Cave Story Pony Quote picture: http://bellcountycomics.deviantart.com/#/d3g7pb2

Or the work-in-progress game project Spike's Quest:

    Ponychan Thread: http://www.ponychan.net/chan/collab/res/10544.html

    Blogger Page: http://spikeqdev.blogspot.com/

    Twitter Page: http://twitter.com/#!/SpikesQuest

I've been directed to these forums by NinjaFanpire who kindly suggested I post about my project here.

Because of the silly system here that requires me to post three times in the introduction forums before gaining access to the other boards I had to make this thread to introduce myself.

So on that note, I end this post with a friendly 'Howdy y'all!' and a proper bow and sweep of the hat towards the lovely mares of this glorious community.
