  1. Got a little (by little I mean long) Dr. Whoof story. This is the first chapter, sets everything up.

    http://jcfreak16.dev...nings-268287560

Oh hey look' date=' first chapter. Alright, what to say on this piece...

It pretty much began because I wanted to write something focusing on background characters. Writing about the Mane 6 is great fun but personality wise there isn't much stretching room. I had also been marathoning Dr Who (which I technically still am) so all that was fresh in my mind as I sat down and typed out 'Dr. Whoof'. And so began one of my more ambitious projects.

First off, I personally use Dr. Whoof over Dr. Whooves. It looks more appealing and sticks closer to the original 'Dr. Who'. I also prefer Derpy Hooves to Ditzy Doo because... well who names their child Derpy? It's a nice silly quirk.

Dr. Who fans will probably notice most of the Doctor's quirks in this story are based off of the 11th Doctor. You can detect it in his manic energy and the way he delivers his dialogue. I for one enjoy the 11th Doctor himself; Matt Smith is excellent at providing a fun, cool Doctor. The thing is... he's not really an authority figure. You don't really picture the 11th Doctor being a mentor; you picture him joking about hats and trying out new words. So I've tried to incorporate elements of some of the older Doctors into Dr. Whoof, most notably the 10th. Perhaps some eagle-eyed Whovians will detect traces of other Doctors, but I've pretty much tried to create a more authoritative 11th Doctor, which will show up better in later chapters.

For people unfamiliar with Dr. Who! Don't worry, this story should be fairly easy to jump in. I've tried to explain the Doctor's tools of the trade well enough and make Derpy relatable to the viewer, er... reader by being unfamiliar with the Doctor herself.

Some may ask why I used Derpy instead of say... Twilight Sparkle. The truth is I really wanted to write something with Derpy and make her an actual character. I for one love the little comics this fandom produces about her being silly/insane/muuuuuuffins. That's all fun but when it comes down to the line it just shows Derpy as being... well, stupid. Here I've allowed her to be somewhat Derpy, but she's still plenty capable of intelligent thought. I've kept certain quirks of her character (wall-eyed and muffins) but I also add some things like... emotions, thought and characteristics (naive, lonely, motherly). I HOPE it's come across well and I hope she's identifiable. Fellow Whovians can probably draw comparisons to previous companions, like Leela or Rose during her first series.

So, the story itself is more modeled after the Dr. Who serial format than the FiM show. Ya might see that I've hinted at future events what with the Primordial and the whole thing with the cradle. Rest assured there is extensive plans for both and much more. I'm trying to stray away from focusing on any of the main characters in the show. Most of the chapters I've planned out use background characters or characters of my own invention. This story will be a bit more serious in tone than the FiM show; I'll definitely be using more monsters and death and hey, maybe aliens.

The 'science' used in this story is a... bit off. The Bioelectromagnetic energy beings are something I could easily see in Dr. Who, if they haven't been there already. But the Doctor so easily pulling another power source for the Tardis instead of Artron energy? Probably wouldn't happen. Let's just pretend Princess Celestia is made of Trachoid Time Crystals.

Alright, time to draw this overly long description to a close! I'm really excited about this story so I'm sorry for rambling on about it. Next chapter will have some lovely clan warfare between griffon barbarians, so you lot can look forward to that I suppose. I'm just enjoying writing this story, though it would be nice if others liked it too. If I write enough chapters I just may submit it to EqDaily![/quote']

  2. Eeeyup, the EqD blog post on it just disappeared after I posted it elsewhere. I'm just glad I managed to grab the MP3 file, because I have a feeling it's going to be gone soon.

It's a nice song though, definitely official. It's a Pinkie Pie 'theme song' of sorts and I'm pretty sure it's a rough cut. Sounds like the singing VA is doing the vocal parts as well and the instruments aren't quite smooth. Really can't wait for the episode this pops up in.

  3. How do they even pick up a salt shaker? It's not like hooves can technically grip things but it happens all the time.

Honestly, if we're going to ask how Pinkie can grab a pinch of salt let's ask how she sticks to the ceiling in the very same song.

  4. So, just finished the episode. Aaaand for once my mind isn't blown by sheer awesome. Don't get me wrong, the episode was good and I enjoyed it. Just wasn't anything new or anything particularly original. The story's a fairly commonplace trope for Saturday morning cartoons. Oh yeah, and the no song thing is ticking me off...

That said, I absolutely loved Rarity's parents and can't wait to see some fanart of them. It was also nice to see Applejack in the episode, though I didn't really get my predicted AJ and AB vs. Rarity and Sweetie Belle. That's cool, it was still nice to see all their interactions.

  5. Not only did we invade, we hit the front page. It's so weird to see them talk about debt crisis, trouble in Greece and oh hey, dudes like ponies now. It's a pretty good article, manages to stay neutral on the 'brony' issue but this is probably some of the most positive press we've gotten lately.

    http://www.equestriadaily.com/2011/11/wallstreet-journal-article-newspaper.html

I can just imagine all those old cronies at Wall Street reading this and thinking, "What sort of poppycock is this animated show?" before adjusting their monocles and fleeing to invest stock in whoever owns the Hub. They... they do all wear monocles right?

(Sorry if this topic was already made. Didn't see one, so I figured it would be okay to make it)

  6. Strangely enough I like Golden Harvest the most and despise the Heartstrings name. Heartstrings is what I picture being thrown around in a romantic comedy, not the name of a pony. :\

Golden Harvest is just a nice simple name that fits well enough. I'll still call her Carrot Top all the same though, if only because it's ingrained into my mind so much.

  7. However, for those who aren't aware, if you take a look at the first episode, you can see from the book that Twilight is reading that Celestia has PINK hair. Luna has and always did have blue hair, but I assumed that in the lore book, she and Celestia both had hair like Luna had in episode 2. When Luna was taken over by the evil magic, she gained her astral hair, as did Celestia when she harnessed all of the Elements of Harmony by herself.

But, since Luna seems to have gained astral hair now, I doubt that Celestia's hair will change. The pink hair thing is something the older fans noticed, and wouldn't really make sense to little kids. Sure, they could explain it, I guess... but they never gave an explanation for Luna's new hair in show.

One should remember that this is a book first of all; a picture book of an old Equestrian legend. There's not going to be any amazing secrets to discover in highly stylized art. I mean, if we're going to argue for pink hair we should argue for noodle legs as well.

And if we would argue for Celestia having pink hair in the past, why should we want it back? If her magical powers/elements of harmony dyed her hair rainbow colors, why should it change back? Don't girls change their hair styles all the time? And come on, who would honestly want to get rid of Celestia's floaty rainbow hair. That's like a staple because it's so weird compared to everyone else's hair. :P

  8. The lesson learned in this episode might be responsibility or peer pressure or envy. There's no doubt that if all of the Mane 6 have a pet besides her, than, consarnit, RD better have one too. So she thinks...

I'd love to see an episode on responsibility and it fits the pet theme going on. I'm gonna throw my money on that being the lesson.

  9. So, every now and then I go back when he's not around and turn it back on, and then listen to him mumble curses at Firefox. I know I should feel sort of bad about this but I think Trollestia would be proud. Plus, its harmless and I'll let him off the hook on Nightmare Night when we are eating the leftover candies that we didn't give out :blah:

*slow clap* That's brilliant man, brilliant. Trollestia would indeed be proud.

  10. It is indeed fun. And for those who may tire of ponies (the TRAITORS) or maybe those of you who want to hide your ponified articles in a jiffy, turning off Ponify can be done in a second. Just click the little logo at the corner of the screen and uncheck 'Enable Ponify'.

Note that this is for Firefox, I'm not sure if Chrome has the same thing. Whatever the case, it's simple enough to turn off and on at whim.

  11. hi hi

Well I guess traditionally, speaking in royal equestrian was a sign of propriety. As nightmare moon, she held nothing but disdain for her "subjects," and did not intend to treat them properly at all.

^ This is a good explanation. NMM wouldn't care for tradition at all; in fact she would probably be against it what with the whole... world domination gig.

  12. This was on EqDaily's Nightly Roundup last night. It's an add-on you can download for Chrome or Firefox (and other browsers using coding magic) that replaces normal words with their 'ponified' equivalents. Everybody into everypony, hand into hoof and the like. I've downloaded it and it seems to be working fine. The cool thing is you can create your own ponifications for anything the creator might have forgotten. Or choose certain websites to be ponified or even highlight ponified words.

Check out more info and download links here! There's even a handy how-to video!

  13. Just finished the new episode. What a brilliant episode too, loved every minute of it! I have no problem with Luna's character at all, thought it was a really nice take. Her speaking in Olde Equestrian really was a nice touch. And it's nice to see the team was able to go with Lauren Faust's original idea of having Luna represent the night and darkness. It makes for a really interesting character, considering Luna is nice (or at least tries to be) yet she lives for being scary.

My only major complaint is still no musical number. Where's all the songs Daniel Ingram promised us? I was really hoping for a dark, operatic number featuring Luna. :C

    Also best Derpy cameo ever.

  14. I don't recall exactly, but my general line of thinking was, "I'll just watch the first episode to see what the fuss is about. Then I'll hate on it to make all those silly bronies feel bad". It ended up taking about an hour to get through the first episode and I very nearly quit as soon as I heard the theme song. But I got through it and then I figured I had to see the rest of the episode (curse you cliffhanger).

I ended up being completely hooked somewhere between episode four (Applebuck Season) and episode seven (Dragonshy). I'm full on brony now baby. :20:

  15. Well isn't it obvious?

That's just Luna, you know, tryin' to fix her frightening public image.

...by sending noxious, neon, hellbeasts, which look just like herself, into crowds of foals.

And riding a dark chariot pulled by bat-winged (seriously, wha?) pegasi before pulling to a stop in front of ominous lightning. Also I spied Zecora in that scene. Nice to see her return since I honestly didn't expect to see her again. Even if this is just a cameo!

To be honest, to someone like Luna, doing things like this is a good call for her personality. Didn't Lauren Faust mention she wanted Luna to represent the darkness and night? This is how Luna does just that, by wearing cool cloaks and sending neon hellbeasts to scare foals to death. I imagine this episode will center on her learning how to properly express her 'niceness'. You know, without giving ponies heart attacks. In fact I bet that'll be the lesson. Realizing that your friends will express themselves in different ways and learning to roll with it.
