  1. A hoedown. Dapper Dan had to admit, he had never heard the term before. Well, it might have come up once or twice during a conversation in his shop, but having only been in Appleloosa about two months now, he'd never really...experienced one. He was going mostly because he wanted to meet the townsfolk a little better. Up until now, Dan had only met the colts and stallions that had come through his shop, and while that meant he knew some people, he'd never really met anyone else personally. Sure, he'd go into stores and such and say hi to all the ponies along the street, but Dan was still "the new pony".

He'd dressed well enough for the event, with a white dress shirt button up his front, and his usual hat, an old but well made gray tweed newsboy cap, which had been one of the many gifts his father had given him. It had been his father's hat, and now it was Dan's, now that it fit of course.

To be entirely honest, Dapper Dan had never been much of a partypony, and even if he was, the only style of dancing he knew were things popular in Fillydelphia...definitely not something an old-fashioned town like Appleloosa would have. He made his way to the party nonetheless, a smile on his face. The tip of his horn glowed a little as he fixed his glasses, which had slipped down his nose a little, and he took the time to look around. One thing he liked about Appleloosa was that everypony seemed to know everypony: conversations were a dime a dozen, between all the denizens of the town. He recognized a few of his customers, but nopony else.

But one caught his eye. A black pony with blue hair, with saddlebags on, looking for someone. Figuring he'd have an easier time chatting it up with a pony who was alone, rather than join in with a group, Dan walked over to Willow. "Evening." he said pleasantly, doffing his cap with a bit of magic. That was one old fashioned trick he'd picked up rather quickly, the tip o' the hat...it was something he did all the time back home. "You seem a little lost. Looking for someone?" he asked, smiling. Dan's voice was in transition...same tone, but the accent was placed halfway between the drawl of an Appleloosan, and the accent of a Fillydelphian. "I'm Dapper Dan, pleasure to meet you."

  2. Would totally kill to be able to lucid dream. Every time I lucid dreamed, I've only realized it after the fact once I've woken up, long after I've woken. In addition they happen at the worst time: right after my alarm goes off and I flop over to go back to sleep, so if I do happen to LD, it doesn't happen for long.

  3. Name: Dapper Dan

    Sex: Male

    Age: Young Stallion

    Species: Unicorn

Coat Color: Brown with dark brown feathering around his hooves

Mane/Tail/Markings Color & Style: Well groomed, slicked back orange mane and average length, matching colour tail

    Eye Color: Green

Cutie Mark: [Not in the linked picture] a crossed straight razor and comb

Origin: Fillydelphia, moved recently to Appleloosa

    Roleplay Type: Mane

Occupation: Barber, and baritone singer (1/4ths of a barbershop quartet)

Motivation: To enjoy life. Dapper Dan loves his life, loves what he does, and tries to help, through conversation in his shop and his music, others to enjoy their life.

Character Summary: There's not a whole lot to tell about Dapper Dan's life. It's a very average affair, no large adventures, no misfortune to speak of, really.

He was born in Fillydelphia, his mother a seamstress there and his father a barber. He inherited his father's job, which made his father rather happy. His father wanted the barbershop to be a family business to last for generations, and was happy to find that his son was just as skilled at it as he himself was. Dan himself loved the whole atmosphere of the shop, in addition to what they did for a job. He got to meet so many interesting people, from just average gentlecolts to a retired REA soldier with tons of stories to tell. The influx of colts and stallions, each with their own stories, the friendly atmosphere, the smell of the barber products, and pipe smoke...the whole lot of it made Dapper Dan fall in love with what he did. It was only natural that, when he was a colt and old enough to work a razor and scissors that he gained his cutie mark.

He got it on his first day on the job. While he'd hung out in the shop listening to the stories and the chatter amongst the stallions there, his father had always told him to wait until he was old enough to try his hand at cutting hair. Dan's first client was a gentlecolt that had come in from out of town. Coached by his father, he magicked up the scissors and comb, and got to work. It went swimmingly, the gentlecolt getting quite the haircut from young Dan, Dan gaining a good tip from the pony, and a cutie mark to boot. From that moment on, instead of just his father working in the shop, they'd had to buy a second chair for Dan to work with, and it became a father-son business, just as his father had wanted. It seemed the family business was going to continue.

Dan had to disappoint his father a little. Shortly after entering into his stallion age, young Dapper Dan had heard of Appleloosa, a newly formed colony on the edge of the desert. Figuring he could get in a bit of adventure, Dan left his parents behind in Fillydelphia, packed up a straight razor and some supplies, and hopped the first wagon train to Appleloosa. It was a little tough at first, but eventually, Dan managed to get a hold of a small little store and loft just off the main street. Nothing more than one barber's chair, a small section for razors and other products for sale, and a waiting room full of old magazines and books, with a small loft upstairs for him to live. Not much, but a business.

He erected a hand-painted barber's pole out front, a gift from his father, and it's been spinning ever since. Business was a little slow at first, but the pleasant atmosphere attracted a following as young Dan entertained his customers with news and song. Now, his little shop is firmly entrenched in Appleloosa, and he's loving life. His father is proud of him, and doesn't mind that the family business may have split: so long as Dan is happy, and still working at what his father, and his father's father did, then Dan's father is just as happy.

Dan is truly an old-fashioned gentlecolt at heart, common among old-fashioned Appleloosa. He has a rather deep voice, for his young age, which he shows off when he occasionally sings when he works. Besides his singing, he's a friendly, calm pony, yet sometimes he gets rather excited, especially over news to the small town, or goings on elsewhere. Though he rarely ever leaves Appleloosa, only going to Fillydelphia or Canterlot if he's running low on supplies and to visit his parents. , Dapper Dan tries to keep his ear to the ground as much as he can on the news, either by getting newspapers when he's in the big cities, having a Pony Express pegasus deliver a paper to him, or just listening to the tales from out of towners in the local watering hole.

All in all, Dan loves life. There's little that gets him down, because as long as he has the barbershop, stories to tell and to hear, songs to sing, and good friends in a good town, then he's happy.

  4. Roger to that, Sage. The reason I created the organization was that I didn't see Wind Rider as being a military man (nor did I intend to make him so), so I definitely want to get some kind of civilian air search and rescue organization created. Simply because the military by nature is a bit of a bureaucratic thing, so calling in the troops every time a pony took a wrong turn in the woods didn't seem logical to me. Also, I couldn't really see the military dispatching troops across Equestria to do school presentations. To me, at least up here in Canada, this kind of stuff is handled first by civilians, with assistance from NatGuard/LEOs.

I'm fine with the time it takes to get an organization approved, seeing as the way I imagined his character pretty much centres around the existence of a civilian branch of search and rescue. Where would I submit an application for the organization? In the Proposed Lore and Discussion section?

Edit: In addition, I didn't really see it as a "grand organization" so much as maybe like a half-dozen full time workers, with the rest of the organization made up of people that show up every time there's an emergency, like a ship lost at sea or something, and that help with but are separate from any REA duties that overlap.

Edit 2: Also, not butting heads with you or anything (least that's not my intention), just that I don't want to come up with a new character/background.

  5. Updated, background is final now.

    I'll add pictures later.

Bullet point sounds a bit hard for the concept, I think.

Yeah, I just suggested it cos I saw he was an organized pony. I really didn't think it through. Keep me off the internet when it's late :V

  6. Perhaps instead of jousting, combat, or at least combat sports in the Ponyverse are a little more primal? For example, two unicorns charge at each other in an effort to get the other to back down, if neither backs down, they use their horns to try and knock the other over (think all the times you've seen guys in movies using swords, and one flicks the blade out of the opponent's hands, except instead of flicking a blade away, it's more like the loser of the contest gets tossed to the ground).

Edit: God that pic is glorious, Xiee. Although what would a magic wielding, Force sensitive pony do with the sword in her mouth? Wouldn't it be easier to magic-swing it errywhere xD?
