  1. Best april fools joke this year:

The game "War Thunder" INTRODUCED a new nation: Ponies

War Thunder: Little Ponies in the Sky

    Pilots!

War Thunder announces the release of a new playable nation. Besides the USSR, USA, Britain, Germany and Japan, you will now be able to play Ponies. This new nation gets its own development line, the final version of which will be presented later by the War Thunder developer — Russian-based Gaijin Entertainment. Six types of pony are already introduced in the game, along with special pony armament options. All ponies are available in the War Thunder hangar and ready to fly in Arcade Battle mode.

The War Thunder global update on April 1st 2013 introduces the following types of pony: Yellow, White, Purple, Pink, Orange and Blue ponies. Happy little horses are ready to spray friendship with an impressive arsenal of precisely modelled armaments — from magic pony-bombs to large calibre rainbow machine guns. The War Thunder development team considers the pony faction to be an important step towards new horizons. «We always consider War Thunder to be the game for the widest audience, combining real combat effects with smart and easy controls» — said Kirill Yudintsev, Creative Director of Gaijin Entertainment, — «We know how popular ponies are amongst our players, so the new playable nation of ponies is a natural and logical movement for the War Thunder». Meet little magic ponies – a new playable nation in War Thunder! Try them all!

    EDIT:

Ok, I thought it was all a joke, but it turns out you could actually play as ponies!

The following is linked, because there is some TOS breaking language:

It includes a gamer, who is not a brony, playing while pushing all the buttons on an MLP soundboard, and generally being amused by the ridiculousness of it all.

  2. I do agree that the personalities felt a bit off. However I'll chalk that up to sleep deprivation for now.

Yes, my optimism is based in the hope that we learn why they were off, and that much of the strangeness is explained.

Though I don't understand the comment of Rarity being out of character through, she seemed fine to me (in fact, let's quickly take a look at everything she does in this)

You bring up good points, but note that even if it can't be explained, the fact that they felt wrong is enough to hurt the story. If you have to think about it to justify them not breaking character, then the author either failed, or has something planned and wanted to call attention to it. If it turns out to be important, great, it will redeem this issue.

The hardest parts of watching Rarity were the sweating, the cringing, clenching her eyes, and the unsteady voice. The whole last page didn't feel right. Her pose was beyond awkward, and being tied up wasn't necessary.

Since it is a new writer, it is more challenging to give the benefit of the doubt. If we had seen great characterization of the mane 6 and THEN this issue, it would be intriguing, rather than confusing.

  3. ...most set-up stories follow this formula so it shouldn't come as a surprise...

What formula do most stories follow? I thought I was describing deviations from standard formulas that made for a poor start.

I'll rate this a 4/5 for the time being, but I'm not sure why Luna was drawn as her Season 1 self. That kinda threw me off.

Oh weird. I hadn't noticed that.

  4. Status: cautiously optimistic

Luna didn't have the presence she should have, or else she is royally freaked out and trying not to show it.

Rarity seemed similarly out of character.

It seems like a gimmick to get us to fear those creatures, but it is tough to take because terrified (and tied up) ponies are not "fun" to watch. The first series worked because the CMC were completely unafraid.

There is just too much that we don't know at this time. They have a great deal of power, but how much?

Someone had a comment on the Rainbow dash miniseries to the effect of "This reads like bad fan-fiction". It is too early to call this the same, but the thought came to mind.

The issue wasn't enjoyable, but it sets up the four issue series to be strong. If they can follow through.

  5. Well, here's a thought: We have people still sign up for either lines or drawings. The line people come up with lines to start the game, pass them on to drawing people, and so on. So the number of concurrent games would be half of the number of players, and artists wouldn't have to draw EVERY single day.

A big problem with this is if someone misses the window. Then suddenly an artists is writing of vice versa. If everyone signs on knowing that they will be doing both, then it isn't shocking to have to switch.

I'm not seeing a huge amount of support for "hardcore mode" in which everyone participates everyday. Could I get a general idea of how many concurrent games you would be interested in? Whether it is just one extra, or perhaps half as many games as we have people?

  6. Guys!

Let us discuss Telephone Pictionary the Tenth.

    Proposal:

Run the game like a traditional game of Telephone pictionary, in which each party participates each round, and there are a number of games equal to the number of players simultaneously running.

For instance, Each participant would write a line for the first day, and pass it to the next person. On the second day each participant would draw a picture and pass that picture to the same person they passed the line to. Each story would thus traverse the circle.

The individual participation requirement is higher, but the results are more prolific. It would also be possible to increase the time limit to two days, or run fewer, say 4-5 simultaneous games. Before we make a decision, I would like your reactions to a shake-up of the game...

  7. I don't want snarky sayings or internet memes on my pony shirts. That goes double for shirts that have the word "brony" on them. If I am going to wear a My Little Pony shirt I want it to be sincere, not sarcastic

    Indeed.

The preferred expression is one of high quality and excellent aesthetics. So THIS and THIS are among my favorite designs.

    Less is more.

  8. Okay, reading the thread again I see there are a couple of people who liked it too.

    I legitimately forgot about those.

the story had a good moral about not letting failure get to you

Well, it is nice that you enjoyed it.

I saw Rainbow getting belligerent, desperate, and coming undone at the seams. Failure absolutely got to her. And when things looked bleak, she was STILL trying to do it alone. Then after succeeding she moped around her house until Applejack snapped her out of it. It was more depressing than uplifting.

  9. ...

Am I the only one who thought it was a really good comic?

So far. Tell us what you liked about it.

I hold story in rather high regards.

My scale is a bit different from yours, but story is critical.

    Story: [0% - 90%]

    Art: [-90% - 10%]

Most of the time, the art would neither add nor subtract from the rating provided by the story. But the art can be so bad that I will stop reading a good story, or it can be so good as to push it over the top.

I would give this a huge, resounding "meh" out of 5 (since I didn't actually finish reading it and can't give it a proper score).

    Ouch.

You stopped ten pages from the end? And this was a short one too. A fast read since there are so many pictures and so few text bubbles. That is a daming indictment.

  10. Oh well, sometimes even the most beloved of franchises can strike out sometimes.

    Not going to disagree...

But there were a few amusing things:

    • The picture on the first page with Rainbow playing a flying V was pretty great
    • Tank had good moment's including the "sign" that he was alright : )
    • "the goggles, they do nothing" is a painfully overdone meme, but I still smiled

  11. I don't think peeps have a right to complain about time scale when the art is free. Plus, you've already obvious been busting your butt to get out all this other art so far. A few days isn't even that bad of a wait time.

Agreed. I've waited weeks before and that was fine.

But this thread is awesome in general, and specifically because you have kept us informed as well.

  12. Man, that coulda gone off in a completely different direction with a couple more people.

Also, new after-game/mini-game idea: Post your ideas for alternate lines here!

    1. Filly Twilight learns a harsh lesson about the physical properties of cardboard.

    2. Middle-aged Twilight has a new favorite movie.

    3. Twilight engages in a dramatic car chase scene using cardboard boxes.

    4. Cyclops Twilight commands her army of inanimate objects.

    5. Let's Rocket Space Team Twilight Go!!!

    6. (yeah)

    7. The Royal Guard debates a potential ban on wings.

    8. To absolutely nopony's surprise, Celestia turns out to be in charge of the black market.

For bonus points, the new lines must fit the picture that follows it as well as the preceding pic, while being dissimilar to the original writer's line. Also, link the last pic back to the first.

  13. I think that the 4th Season has been set to the Winter of 2013 in order to give room for the new Equestria Girls series. As in, the first season of Equestria Girls is aired, then Season 4 of MLP FiM is aired.

That hurts my soul. I really hope there is a better reason for the late start.

  14. Guess I'll have to get one to find out....Looking at my Zecora from behind, it doesn't look odd or anything...

Ah yes, I had forgotten about her.

Most ponies have a human style that sits flat and broad over the whole head, and a mane that is thin at the back where it meets the hair. Is there any way to make that look good? Zecora looks great from that angle because the hair on her head is already thin because it is a mohawk. Also, her neck-rings preempt a full neck mane, so there is barely any transition as all. It manages to look horse-like, tribal and aesthetic all at once. She has a great overall design.

  15. My sister came to visit me last summer, and had never seen any episodes. I started her off on the pilot, and on her initiative we binged the first two seasons in a single week. With only the wedding episodes remaining, I primed her with this quote:

Me: "I am so glad you are enjoying this show. You're my LSBFF"

    Sister: "What?"

Me: "Little Sister Best Friend Forever"

    Sister: "Well you're my...(pause to think)...BBBFF! Ha!"

The look on her face when we got to that part a few minutes later was priceless.
