  1. My favorite MLK Jr. quote comes from a sermon I have on my computer, I have typed it out for you:

"I'm not a consensus leader, I don't determine what is right and wrong by looking at the budget of the Southern Christian Leadership Congress, or by taking a Gallup poll of the majority opinion. Ultimately a genuine leader is not a searcher for consensus, but a molder of consensus.

On some positions, cowardice asks the question: is it safe? Expediency asks the question: is it politic? Vanity comes along and asks the question: is it popular? But conscience asks the question: is it right? And there comes a time when one must take a position that is neither safe, nor politic, nor popular but one must do it because conscience tells him it is right."

  2. Newspaper strips?

I have probably bought fewer than 10 newspapers in my whole life. I remember being sad when Calvin and Hobbs and The Far Side finished though. Nowadays, the only syndicated strip that I would read is Dilbert.

For webcomics though, here are some that I keep up with on a weekly basis:

    Schlock Mercenary

    Weesh

    bugcomic.com

    Surviving the World

    xkcd

    Order of the Stick

    Spacetrawler

    Darths and Droids

    Gunnerkrig Court

    And two Finished works:

    Digger

    Daisy Owl

    I also like Lackadaisy Cats.

This would be amazing if it updated every week instead of 10 total times in 2011.

  3. If the advertisement is only serving to aggravate you, it's not doing what is supposed to be doing...

...The talking ads or infinite popup chains on the other hand I would have no moral issues with squashing.

So I guess that would actually be sort of a 5th option.

Firstly, if an ad is aggravating you, it is getting through to you. I'm not quite sure on the psychology, but I don't think that the agencies consider that a loss.

As far as your fifth option, you are choosing rationalization? I don't think that is mutually exclusive from the last three options that I posted earlier.

  4. Well, come to think of it, the spa arrangement might be something that started in the months since Twilight has arrived.

I would tend to agree except that both of them ordered "the usual". How many times do you have to go to spa before that works? Maybe not many. Going together might be new, but Rarity going certainly isn't. Fluttershy may have joined Rarity's trip, and the "usual" is the light version, but same order as Rarity's treatment.

  5. I wonder if the two aren't linked somehow. As in, they don't really complain about the weather, but they are stressed by other things, which puts them in a grumpy mood (and then they complain about whatever is the topic of the moment, like the weather). Perhaps if they had the opportunity to vent about the difficulties they face in life (the real ones, not the weather) things would be easier and they'd be in a better mood afterwards.

It is possible. But I know people in harder situations that have better attitudes. "Venting" sounds like something you do to get it out of your system before getting back to your normal self rather than complaining be your normal deal. As it stands, I cannot be the go to guy for venting for anyone at this time of year. I suffer from Seasonal Affective Disorder, and it is a challenge to stay positive without others dragging me down.

  6. Nope, it wasn't you. I'm male and he was in uniform onboard the ship - so if you're not in the Navy and I'm not female, that incident couldn't have been us. xP

Wha? What made you think I was specifically asking if you were her?

Your post was my first exposure to "brohoof" and triggered in me the memory for earlier in the day.

  7. No group of friends is perfect, mind you. My friends argue all the time, but at the end of the day, I wouldn't trade them for anything in the world.

Earlier in life, I had a group of friends that never argued. It was terrible. It was because no one ever did or said anything of significance, so no offense was ever given. When life separated us, I realized that I didn't know my best friends.

  8. Celestia said that she and Luna discovered the Elements of Harmony just before they rose up to defeat Discord. So wherever the elements came from, they predate the royal sisters.

Ah, really? I've still only seen that episode once and I had forgotten that they explained any of the origin.

Simple fact is that Celestia could not do what the mane six did to free her sister.

That is a strong point, but not so strong that you should base logical extrapolations on it. I have several weak explanations that could explain it. These aren't good, but neither do I believe they have to be because all that is necessary is a little doubt.

    • The thousand years could have changed a lot in Celestia or Nightmare Moon or the elements. Celestia may have modified the power herself so that when they were next used on Luna, the magic would be successful
    • It was probably always Celestia's plan to bring Luna back into relationship with her. The banishing was the cosmic example of the time-out chair so that when Luna was broken, she would have learned her lesson.
    • Celestia trained Twilight, possibly with this task in mind since the beginning.
    • Celestia could have saved Luna herself, but this was the perfect opportunity to allow Twilight to step up.

  9. Full disclosure: My previous computer had firefox and adblock installed and I used it extensively. I am now using firefox without adblock.

The main reason why I use something like adblock is to stop things like flash ads, that can slow down even the most powerful computers.

Plus some people like to listen to music when browsing, I know I do and I get annoyed when...

Adblock is a tool, and just like any tool, it has the potential to be use for good and evil. A sledge hammer is a tool as well, but it is challenging to use constructively for a task like hanging pictures on your wall.

If you are using it to make a site useable (your definition: stop viruses or flash ads or music ads) you are doing one or more of four things:

    1. Using the program ineffectively (looking at and blocking ads one at a time) (ethically grey, but I won't fault you)
    2. Using the program to block huge swaths of ads (sledge hammer approach) (evil, or at best, fighting evil with evil)
    3. Visiting websites that you should be writing off.
    4. Not purchasing the subscription from the site that removes ads.

I don't think there is a fifth option, but perhaps the modern users can clue me in?

Personally, the only site, on the entire internet, that I visit that has annoying ads is Ultimate-guitar.com, and they are pretty bad. Not evil though, because you can buy a cheap subscription to the site that gets rid of them, and it is such a powerful resource that I am willing to put up with them until I decide to pay for it.

  10. I just thought of an appropriate, but inappropriate choice for Applejack: barrel racing at a rodeo. <shudder>

No, I'm going back to Roller Derby. She would be a fiendish blocker. Remember her race with Rainbow Dash? Wait, maybe Rainbow Dash should be roller derby too, but as a Jammer.

  11. I am planning on being a bit more proactive that that.

Historically, someone will eventually find something to complain about no matter what the fun topic is. Then if you don't nip it in the bud, it develops great inertia and can't be stopped.

  12. Today, for the first time I told someone I knew, face to face that I was a brony. I prefaced it by saying I was keeping it on the down low, but she was wearing a 20% cooler shirt. I will work me way up from there.

    Edit:

Oddly enough, I got a brohoof from another brony within the first five minutes of the wearing the shirt, lol.

Wait, is that what happened to me? I thought I got a fist bump out of the deal with her.

Does it have to be two dudes?

  13. I think its more her organizing skills than a magnetic charisma that are what count in this case.

    Ha!

I love the idea of an odd talent (You are ruining my checklist!) making up for the lack of a quality highly valued by society.

Focusing on friendship, rather than romance, gives the series lots of chances to stick to the fundamentals and model healthy relationships.

  14. We're still talking about the same order of magnitude though.

    Your argument is:

    A > B and C > B

    Therefore:

A is not much greater than C

This is a non-sequitur, as Celestia could be 100 times as powerful as the main 6, and the inequalities would still work.

We have never seen A (Celestia) defeated, but we have seen C (mane 6) defeated by Discord. It took Celestia to break them out of their hypnosis.

Whose to say that Celestia couldn't have defeated Discord again? By ceasing the EoH, she may have been able, but then she would have broken the bond from the mane 6, and stolen a growth opportunity from them.

  15. I've seen something like that happen in real life several times, where a single person, whether intentionally or just by virtue of knowing compatible people, ends up being the nucleating point for a web of friends.

Amusing, because I would expect it out of someone friendlier. She's nice, but she doesn't have the magnetic personality I usually associate with such people.
