  1. ...they still work like real ponies. Their ears fold back when they're scared, their back legs bend the correct way, they're animated with real pony gaits when the walk, trot or gallop. Even little things like Rainbow Dash fighting like a real wild horse after she was discorded, or Pinkie Pie rolling on the ground like a real pony in Feeling Pinkie Keen, make me think they like to show off their understanding of horses every now and again.

This is just to lull you into a false sense of security so that when they lift their two front legs over their head your first thought is "something exciting is happening!" not "physics is over there twitching in the corner".

  2. Curling in the winter

"Epic Frisbee" in the summer. This is a game my friends made up and have been refining over the past couple of summers. It is Ultimate Frisbee adapted to players in kayaks on a lake.

Also, my Lions are one victory away from clinching their first playoff game since...something depressing like 1999.

  3. 1) How old are you and on what continent do you live? (europe, north america, australia, africa, south america...)

    27, North America

    2) What does it mean, to you personally, to be a brony?

A brony is a non-traditional fan of the work who goes above and beyond simply watching the show.

    3) Are you a brony? if so, for how long?

    Yes, one week

    4) How do you personally express being a brony? (through art, roleplaying, give your car rainbow stripes, socializing with other bronies, etz)

Learning the songs for my guitar, chatting about it.

    5) Are there any aspects of brony culture/communities/expression that you do not agree with/like? (something you don't like, or dont feel match the way you understand it is to be a brony)

Moderation is very important. While the show is of excellent quality, and has redemptive properties, it is not healthy to obsess over it. MLP, like any other piece of fiction should not replace having adventures in real life. That seems like nitpicking to me though. I have been impressed with the fans so far.

  4. I believe this was part of a 2-part arc, starting with May the Best Pet Win, to inflate Dash's ego enough that they could grind her into the ground so hard it made a permanent change to her character. If you notice since then she's been noticably more humble (though certainly she still has some arrogance, it's just not nearly as strong and she doesnt brag as much)

I don't get it. Do they want the show to have continuity or not? What is the point of the first episode if there is no change? It boggles my mind that you would need two episodes to make a permanent change.

  5. Also, I just got permission from the Dan to post the picture in question, even though it is in the members-only area:

    doodle51.gif

The caption says something to the effect of: "cheechako asked for tate riding a light cycle being cut off by olivia riding a light unicorn. And yes I did reference My little Pony: FiM for the design of the unicorn."

I am glad that you are already enjoying it Trilobite. I think it is a wonderful gem. Also, Dan has a completed comic called "Angel Moxie" that is a loving parody of Magical Girls.

  6. Tales I agree with you to an extent. Yes the creators of the show are awesome in regards to their interactions with us, yes hasbro was within their rights to pull the site and yes the archive was illegal.

But I still think that it is a bad thing that the archive may soon disappear.

At a basic level, who is going to download the vast majority of the epps from the site? Us. Are we a global community? Yes. Does hasbro make the episodes available globally? Well, the only outlet for me is iTunes, and a search for my little pony yields 0 results. Also, the hardcore fans are likely to buy season box sets if they ever become available.

Also, from personal experience, the ability to easily (yay for vlc) watch the mlp episodes mutiple times has made me more of a brony. From this I believe that it is not absurd to suggest that other people would have the same experience. People becoming more serious about the fandom can only be good for hasbro.

It's not the end of the world (that's late december 2012 :P) and i don't think any less of hasbro for their choice. It still sucks though, it makes my getting of my weekly dose of cheer and ponies that bit harder.

    Just wondering...

If buying both seasons on iTunes costs $80, but it is not available in your country, does buying $80 worth of MLP merchandise (either that you had no interest in buying, or as gifts or donations you had no other reason to offer) ethically allow you to download bootleg episodes?

  7. Ponychan attracts a lot of Bronies from what I can see, but it also looks a ton less organized. And, with more people come more trolls, since Ponychan is kind of an extension of 4chan. However, sometimes Bronies do post inspirational or funny stories there, and who doesn't like a good inspirational story, especially as from one Brony to another?

Heh. Tales, you have failed to convince me to leave : )

  8. Oi! I'm new here too, but so far the place seems really cool. Let's find out together--with SCIENCE! Also, really like the avatar. Mind if I ask where it comes from and what it represents?

    Hello.

My avatar is the main character "weesh" at weeshcomic.com

He grants wishes to kids who haven't grown up so much that they can no longer see him. However, the wishes run out when he runs out of energy (licorice).

That site is a small part of the reason that I came here. I donated at that comic to have special access to Sunday comics including sketches of donator suggestions. I asked for the the nerdy Tate riding a tron lightcycle, and the girly Oliva cutting him off on a "light-unicorn" because it totally fits both of their personalities. Well the suggestion was taken, and the author/artist (Dan Hess) used MLP: FiM as the model for the unicorn.

The comic appeals to me because it is cute fluff, with almost no actual content. In my lineup of 30+ webcomics, it is the most dependable one in avoiding serious subject matter. There are lots of comics, but the archives fly by.

  9. This is in that other topic too, but may help you. It only covers Season 1 though (and even then maybe not all of it). I don't know if there's an updated version to be found. It's also pretty big, so spoiler.

This is a well done guide, but I was shocked that it didn't recommend the first two episodes.

They are what got me hooked, and are the two best episodes in the series as it stands.

The second is the only episode that I cried in, and there is a lot to be said for starting at the beginning.

  10. It is often apparent to me that everything I experience/watch/read/etc has consequences in my life.

Either you put garbage in and get garbage out, or you put good in and get good out.

The effect is amplified by time.

Thank you for sharing your story. I am looking forward to hearing more of them.

The following story is either MLP related or a coincidence....

Four months ago (and three months before I watched the first episode) I decided to act on a 15 year urge to get a guitar and take lessons. It was for me. I didn't have any band aspirations, or the desire to play on a stage, and I rebuffed my church worship team's suggestions that I join them eventually. Over the course of the last couple weeks I realized that I was being selfish. I had thought that being selfish with the talent would look like Rainbow Dash's grandstanding. I didn't realize it could look like a dragon hoarding treasure. I thus made the decision yesterday to dedicate it to God, and thus to all people. It has been too early for that to mean any actual action yet, but the attitude adjustment has me reeling at the moment. We will see how it goes from there.

  11. Like other answers given thus far, I ignored the internet chatter (and a "Wait Wait don't tell me" episode) until I became unable to do so any longer. I was hooked when I cried during the second episode.

The fandom has essentially sent [mare do well] into Exiled From Canon, because dash was VERY off-character there, and the anachronism was out of control. Not to mention the whole plot was simply rediclous, even for MLP where a large chunk of logic gets thrown out the window each episode.

    That...

...bothers me quite a bit even though I disliked that episode. As annoying as it was to see my favorite pony act like a jerk then be made a fool in front of the whole town, it seems disrespectful to snub it.

  12. But...but....I want Spike to have wings!

Well when you ask like that, I kinda want him to have wings too.

I don't think this is a portent of future spike. We expect him to be rational as he grows up, to be able to speak, and to mature rather than to devolve. Why would his appearance be a similarly fixed in stone?

As much as it would be cool to have an upgraded spike, he would have to stay cute for it to be worth it. Skipping from baby to teenage was jarring.

  13. I am very careful about who I tell, since I am a professional, and my relationships with our customers are important. The next time I apply for a job, I don't want the company to google me and have MLP come up as the first applicable link.

Also, since I am new-ish to the series (there were only 4 episodes in the second season when I caught up), I am still trying to figure out the best way to plug it, and to explain it so that I can have an intelligent conversation about it.

I don't want to tell a future brony about it, and let all their preconceived notions shine brighter than the picture I can paint in the first 2-3 sentences. I haven't figured out what those 2-3 sentences should be yet, but I am getting closer.

  14. ...pegasister...

I think the issue is that "brony" is an amazing word. It sums it up, it rolls off the tongue, has a certain rainbow dash flair, and is a nearly seamless portmanteau. As such, coming up with ANOTHER word that fits as beautifully is difficult. I feel like anything else you could select would be clunky and forced. Like how the above, at the very minimum, excludes a lot of ponies in the show. Until I hear the absolute perfect word.

So do you, as a female fan, want to use the cool word that isn't quite accurate, or a gender-accurate word without the same vibe?

If I were you, I would look to RD for the answer.
