1. i personally just try to outsource my colour references. Even the canterlot.com theme colour editor gives me problems sometimes. Nothing really that bad, just inconvenient enough for me to try and look for colour codes elsewhere. Canterlot has a good selection of colours in the post editor, but sometimes they lack the exact colour im looking for, and even if I can use the canterlot colour map, it takes me longer to find what im looking for because my colour design is more topical than mathmatical. For instance, if Im looking for a certain colour red, i look up where ive seen that shade of red before, and then use a colour ID program that is on my desktop. Its a nice fancy little tool.

If you get used to how hex codes work, though, you can use one of these kinds of pickers and adjust the string. :)

  2. Hello Morning Dawn,

So, I am going to dedicate some some to helping you get this app up and running, but it might take a just a little while longer.

First thing we have to do is tackle what you have in your summary currently. So I am going to ask you a bunch of questions, because I really want to know how who your character is a little more.

One major thing is that I would like to see this part be in "history", and broken up into a few separate paragraphs. This is all good info, and I like the mystery of the message about the packages, a lot. It shows a lot about him that he is unflinchingly disciplined and does his job without question, but at the same time has a potential flaw of not being curious or skeptical enough. I sure hope those packages are legitimate mail! :)

As a foal MorningDawn was drawn toward many things. He had a curiosity about the guards that work to protect the Princess, eventually he wanted to become a guard. He tried multiple times to convince his

parents, but they simply did not approve. In anger he ran away to a place that his parents would probably not find him, his basement. He spent hours sitting in the basement thinking about how he would get to the guards. MorningDawn found a bookcase in the basement, hopefully he could find his answers there. He read hours on a book that really had nothing to do with the subject on matter. He was intrigued by the book so he kept reading on. When he finished, he walked out of his basement and apologized to his parents. They were sorry as well and accepted his apology. His parents granted him the right to go into the guards, but MorningDawn was to serve only by delivering letters. He was excited and went to bed early that night. He woke up in the morning to find his parents downstairs eating in the kitchen. They told him that he was going to be trained by a Sargent that works to protect Princess Celestia. The first couple of days it was rough and he took some emotional damage, but whenever he pulled out the book his parents told him to keep he was cheered up. On the boot camp he was trained to fly, he was trained to be the best. He wasn't forced to by the leaders, but he wanted to be the best. When he graduated from the camp he earned the title " Private Messenger Pony MorningDawn". He was glad to finally have a job and wanted to start work right away. The day after graduation he was sent on a delivery mission. He did as he was told, not to look at the boxes inside. He was curious to what was in it though. He made it to the town he was delivering to and dropped the box off, but before he did that he looked at the note on the box. It was for him and it said : Stick around town, you will be needing to get more packages. The note was anonymous and he had no clue who wrote it, but orders are orders. Currently he sits outside wondering who's packages he would have to deliver.

So we know a lot about the time he convinced his parents to let him start the career path to become a guard. Good! We know about his schooling, also good!

But we don't know anything about his early childhood other than that he was drawn to many things and wanted to be a guard. And you left out one of the most important parts of any pony's life...getting their cutie mark, and how their cutie mark relates to their special talent. How does his mining symbol cutie mark relate to his special talents? I can see from your avatar that you mean a chisel and hammer is his cutie mark, but my first thought because I didn't realize that your avatar was your character (and yes you can laugh at me for this) that you meant the same symbol that the Pittsburgh Steelers have on their helmets! So can you please describe this better, as well as telling us how he got it and how it makes him special or what it made Morning Dawn realize about himself?

Ok, if you get that far, that should do it for history.

So if all that ^^ is his history, but now we need a character summary of what he's like. We DO know that he's driven, and wants to be a guard, and has discipline from his history. We also know that he might have a flaw that makes him a more rounded character. But we need to know who he is. What does he like? What does he do when he is not waiting to deliver mysterious packages or doing his job admirably? Why is falling in love his primary motivation?

Basically, what the purpose of this section of the application is that other people can go to it, read it and decide "Hey, my character would get along well with this pony!" or "oh man, my character and this pony will be oil and water!" so that they know how to properly react during RP.

So if you can step back and try to see the application from my perspective where I don't know so much about your character and have all these questions, and fill in those gaps in my knowledge so I have a clearer understanding of who Morning Dawn is, we'll be closer to approval.

If you can do that and then wait until Saturday morning for my feedback (around 10 AM - 1 PM EST), I can sit down in chat with you and go over your application in real time to help you improve it if you'd like.

  3. Lux told me we're good to go here, I don't see anything that I have any questions about, so...

Go be free with your fancy-pants unicorn with a penchant for goofy party games that sleep-away camp kids play!

Be free in the wilds of Las Pegasus and all suburbs thereof, if he would deign to go into said suburbs for a game of Uno.

  4. I'm going to do this again this weekend around pony time (Saturday December 8th 10:00 AM - 1:00 PM EST) ! I have hours listed, but honestly as long as I am in chat, feel free to message me in the chatroom for help. Remember I am here to talk to YOU one-on-one about your applications to help them get through the approval process quickly, not to dominate chat with lore speculation (well, at least lore speculation you expect me to give you an answer about, you wanna speculate amongst yourselves, that's fine) and rules. :)

I am not sure who might be joining me, could be anyone from the team!

  5. My uncle Mike passed away this morning. I will be away for a few days.

I am sorry to hear this Dunes. My sympathies to you and your family.

Now as for me... now that the handful of things I wanted to get done are done, I am on pony hiatus for a few days. I will definitely see you all Saturday morning!

  6. Roleplay Type: Crossover

    Name:Process Blue

    Sex:Male

    Age:Older Colt

    Species:Pegasus

    Eye colour:Process Blue (#0091c9)

    Coat:Process Blue

Mane/Tail: Look, just everything about him is process blue, naturally, this is why he gets to (read: has to) be a skypainter at such an early age. His mane and tail are cropped ultra short to minimize shadows against the backdrop of the sky.

    Physique:Fit and fast

    Residence:Applewood apartment complex, the soundstage.

Occupation:Junior Mid-day Sky painter for Friendship is Magic, This entails being strapped into an apparatus that basically turns you into a pony-sized paint roller, and you fly in teams around the perimeter of a vast dome-shaped semi-rigid backdrop applying paint daily, and constantly to give the appearance of the sun rising and setting. Ponies don't have LED technology yet, and stage lighting only goes so far.

Don't ask me why ponies didn't just build a huge globe with the sky painted inside that revolves around a suspended sound stage. I have no idea. They didn't have the same inventors as us, I guess.

Cutie Mark: Usually covered up with stage makeup that matches his coat colour, but it's just a simple 6-pointed star.

History: Do you ever wonder what REALLY goes on in Equestria when we're not watching Friendship is Magic? Why nature doesn't seem to conform to the rest of the world? Why two ponies control the sun and the moon? What you, and Twilight Sparkle and her friends, might not know is that the universe we see on-screen is merely just a candy-coloured illusion that forms a carefully controlled experiment in friendship, population control and entertainment (ala the Truman Show), on a vast Soundstage by a corporate entity known as The Studio.

Most ponies who lived within the walls of the Soundstage had never left, and never would. With the exception of Luna and Celestia, who are tall actresses cast to play those parts, thus their seeming longevity. The ponies who believe they live in Equestria, for all intents and purposes LIVE in Equestria. They're born, fall in love, grow old and die, not knowing they are part of a completely fake world constructed to keep the unicorns from upsetting the status-quo and extremely tenuous of the actual world in Ponyland. Earth ponies and pegasai managed to keep it war torn enough without the inclusion of magic.

The technical crew, of which Process' family was a part, were not slaves, but rather had a contractual obligation to The Studio. Life under Studio's wing, and within the Soundstage, was preferable to the war-torn countryside outside its walls. You got plenty to eat, shelter, you just had to give up your hopes and dreams in exchange for that comfort. You had to give up your future and autonomy.

Born to a family with a long tradition of skypainting, Reflex Blue (his sire) and Viridian (his dam) met frequently when it came time to repaint the distant twilit hills and fell in love. Eventually they applied to Studio for an off-duty fraternization permit, then a domestic-partnership permit, and finally a offspring permit, but only for one foal. When Viridian bore twins, the family was heavily levied with fines

Process Blue and his fraternal twin sister Cyan, lived a simple life doing that most of the ordinary citizens of Ponyland did He grew up staying out of trouble, going to his necessary and required schooling, and awaiting his eventual appointment to Friendship is Magic. One thing you didn't do, as a resident of the Soundstage was question the whys of it. Peace and obedience was their motto. Major infractions that disturbed that were grounds to purge you from Soundstage and into the wilds outside the walls, but anyone was free to leave at any time. There was even a store that you could cash in your accumulated work credits to buy provisions from if you chose to do so.

So when Process did grow up, and became a strong enough flyer through rigorous training, he was of course drafted into the role of skypainter, just as predicted, along with his sister. The studio preferred to co-opt naturally the correct shade ponies for their background. They simply saved costs that way. For Equestria months (for he had never actually seen the real sun, so most of the folks in Soundstage calculated time by the sun and moonrise in Friendship is Magic) he and his sister, who were able to fly next to each other as a team in that part of the gradient, actually enjoyed their jobs. Although it was frowned upon, they would laugh and tell jokes as they flew. Until one fateful day where one of his jokes caused his sister to laugh, putting a hoof through the delicate reflective fabric of the hemisphere background, causing it to reveal a rift in the sky, revealing the Soundstage...which everyone in Equestria could see.

    Character Summary:

Process Blue doesn't even know who he is. His upbringing within the studio hasn't left him with much room to explore himself beyond a general feeling of being content enough, and an affinity for his family, and some extremely lame jokes. He kind of just always knew that he would end up a skypainter, and probably be a skypainter, circling the hemisphere in the downward spiral he does, every day until he was too old and infirm to do so, and then he would end up with the rest of the retirees on kitchen duty until he was too old to do that and so on and so forth. The spark of hoping there's something more is just beginning to smolder in his chest though.

As a daylight skypainter, he does not even get afforded the luxury of seeing the show he is working so hard to maintain very often (which is piped, live into every dwelling), he can not really, as an older teen who finally appreciates fillies, even join in on the jovial discussions of who on the show it more attractive or dream of meeting the characters or becoming part of the cast.

His lot in life kind of sucks.

  7. I like this character a lot, and he seems well-rounded to me with the addition of those few sentences.

ORDINARILY, I would want more information as what he does as a Strong-Griffin, but it sounds like being a "street performer/entertainer" in exchange for bits or food or shelter like the minstrels and bards of old is just his day job to keep him alive while he pursues his true passion. You didn't mention if he was part of a troupe, so I am assuming that this is what you mean. You don't imply that he is having the hard life of an itinerant, so I think it's OK. When you're spending as much time in the library and writing as he seems to be, who needs anything more than a bed?

  8. Hi Scythe!

I'm sorry, the delay on this has been my fault because I wanted to give it the full attention I needed to.

I am afraid I am going to have to ask you to follow the application form exactly.

Other than that, all your other subheadings can be treated as a list within "Character Summary" (which needs to be switched with history to keep the correct order) like Motivation, dreams, fears, etc You can still make them bold, just indent them so we can keep the application form clean and consistent so that others will know exactly where to look for the info they need to.

We really need to see it presented in the following order, and with the following verbiage.

    Roleplay Type:

    Name:

    Sex:

    Age:

    Species:

    Eye colour:

    Coat:

    Mane/Tail:

    Physique:

    Residence:

    Occupation:

    Cutie Mark:

    History:

    Character Summary:

Only one other thing is your usage of the word ambivalent, While she does have a few contradictory traits (which seem to be fine), she doesn't actually strike me as being generally ambivalent. Maybe ambivalent to the opinions of others? Can you clarify?

Beyond the formatting and just that one tiny thing she is good to go and has definitely come a long way, so as long as you don't change anything while you are re-formatting, you should be all set here! Let me know when you adjusted that and I will stamp :)

  9. Yes, Autumn, that might be really helpful! As you have witnessed, we get a lot of "I don't know how my pony should look" or "I don't know what to name my pony" chatter in chat and it would be nice to be able to point them to one place.

I can think of a bunch of other resources that can help RP people like this that do not necessary fall under the category of rules or guidelines we enforce, or board canon, but are more just to help our users out when they're stuck with character creation or roleplay.

Good colour picker too. I like that it's embedded. It appeals to my sense of not having to click too much to reach content. I'm gonna put it in the first post. :)

  10. Hello everyone!

Your friendly neighborhood Flutterscotch, who had many classes in colour theory and several jobs being a printer's lackey, is here to talk to you about the subject of colours!

We see a lot of different ways that people describe their ponies, colour-wise, some precise and easily understandable, and some...well, some not so much, especially when you get into names cooked up by marketing people, much like what might be listed on the MLP wiki.

Sometimes they're just straightforward, like this description of Celestia:

Coat colour: So light pink it's nearly white.

Mane/Tail colour & Style: Cyan, Light Pink, Periwinkle, Pale blue-green.

    Eye colour:Purple

And that is all well and good, most of us know those colours from our Crayola days, but just seems to lack a little pizzazz, so people sometimes seek to spice up those colour descriptions a bit.

I am not here to say what is right and what is wrong...But when you tell us your gardener pony's mane is PMS 292 (uncoated), Columbia Blue (the Pantone marketing name of the same colour) or Chateau (a close Plochere equivalent), or even just #75B2DD, reader might look at you a little funny. While these are precise and 100% acceptable ways to describe a colour, (and if you are working in the printing or design industry, the way you SHOULD be referring to these colours) they leave the reader a little flat. This is especially so if the colour names don't seem to be thematically linked or the colour name is insider jargon that is not commonly used that people have to look up, but they don't even know what colour naming system you are using!

An extreme example of this is describing Celestia like this:

]Coat colour: Heavenly Charm (a Plochere colour that's almost white, but has the tiniest hints of pink)

Mane/Tail colour & Style: a flowing mane comprised of Ozone (Pantone 2915, which is pretty close to 292), Pinocchio (again from Plochere), Carissma (pulled off a web based colour guide) and Madang (again from a colour guide from the web, which I guess as a place name evokes a sort of green, maybe, if you make the correlation to the tropics?)

Eye colour: Strikemaster (again pulled off a web based colour guide)

If you did not know what Celestia looked like, or didn't have a picture at hand, or weren't involved in the industries that use those colours, would you know what that means?

However, if you tell us that same pony's mane is the colour of a forget-me-not, or a crisp September sky, it not only evokes the feelings of the colour, and ties your character to that emotion, and leaves it open to the other readers to describe your pony without having to look up a marketing-based colour name. If you post the hex code 75B2DD in parenthesis after a descriptive colour, it also tells us exactly what colour we would need to digitally create that character.

To pull from Dio's application for Princess Celestia because I think it's a good example of theme naming that tells us what colours are used, but also thematically ties them together with the colours of precious and semi-precious gems that not only serve as descriptive words of those colours, but evoke grandeur and sparkle befitting our princess.

Coat colour: A pearly pink colour, very nearly white (#FFF9FD)

Mane/Tail colour & Style: Mane and tail of many colours kept aloft by her own innate magic. Streaks of aquamarine (#5CB5D5), jade (#58CEAC), sapphire (#92AEEF), spinel (#E0A7F8)

    Eye colour: Amethyst (#553B6B)

You could do this thematically with nearly anything. I could describe Celestia using flowers as a base of description

Coat colour: The colour of a white rose.

Mane/Tail colour & Style:Flowing in in streaks the colour of cornflowers, bluebells, lilacs and green hellebores.

    Eye colour: Iris

Even if you don't know what all those words mean, they evokes a certain kind of palette. It evokes pale spring colours, pastels.

Yet if I was describing Pinkie Pie, I MIGHT go into candies and confections (Because is she colour of Wintergreen mints, bubble gum and Cotton Candy or WHAT?, or even fun marketing not based on nature or historical context words like Charissma and Radiant + their Hex equivalents to describe her colouring, if I could find applicable ones.

There are a whole lot of different standardized colour-naming systems out there, many of those colour-naming systems pull from a combination of the two big ones (Pantone and Plochere), with the addition of the standardized web colour names and some other sources.

    • Pantone Matching System(for the printing and manufacturing of standardized inks. Not all colours match up from ink to CMYK or RGB, and even beyond that you have coated and uncoated, plastics, etc, etc, etc and even custom colours (like Coca-Cola red) A Pantone 292 from all those systems, and even the Hex code equivalent is slightly different.
    • Plochere colour System - based heavily in the interior design industry. I have not worked with this one much beyond picking out a colour to match a Pantone colour.
    • Web colour names
    • Name that colour (a web utility)

Chose your colour names wisely :)

I will, however, give HUGE nerd bonus points for anyone who apps a graphic designer pony and does lay out their exact PMS specifications. Because Pantone jokes are hilarious.
