As for whether this should be for Mane RP, I think a pretty strong case can be made for making this the exception to the species rule. Gak can be fitted into World of Equestria rather seamlessly after all; my plan is to simply go into every thread and post about 30 seconds worth of Gak related content every few posts (repeated several times of course). I'm sure you agree that there's no way this would be at all jarring or incongruous....

After Pinkie arrives, she wanders around the map randomly in a cardboard box. Each time you find and click her you get a reward.

We don't really know the exact way it all works in regards to how Equestria is ruled and governed, and until the (perhaps unlikely) time that it is explained for us in canon, we can't give a clear answer. Dio's app passed a staff vote though and was approved, so the information it contains can be regarded as accepted board canon until the time that we receive a different, canon explanation.

Would you suggest picking a different topic for the thread then? My intention is to take the debate along the lines of whether innate magical power is sufficient qualification to rule. I personally feel there's enough to go on, but don't want to tread on anyone's toes/hooves...

Basically, posting in the Mane RP section of the forum is restricted to those who have submitted a character application. This is done so they can keep the tone of World of Equestria/Mane RP consistent with that of the show, and for various other reasons (I'm not helpstaff, so I can't list them all). Since you don't appear to have created an application (unless I missed something) you are currently restricted to the Free for All RP section, which has less stringent rules and is still a pretty vibrant part of the site. I suggest you post there in the meantime, and look over the World of Equestria info page to see if it seems to your tastes.

My OC Ashen Smirk has just moved to Stalliongrad and is most definitely not a party pony. Might be interesting/hilarious to have him roped into this somehow, although he may not quite set the tone you're looking for.

I'm currently preparing an RP thread, and a question has occurred to me: am I correct in assuming that Equestria is a Hereditary Thaumocracy (where the ruling dynasty is in power due to their inherent magical power) in Mane RP, or is some other system of government in effect?

EDIT: Had a sudden brainwave and decided to read through Diomedes' Celestia app. It cleared up a lot for me, but I may as well summarise what I gleaned from it, just in case I'm completely misreading things:

Celestia is effectively immortal, and is the supreme ruler by dint of her vast magical power (although being compassionate, wise and having deposed the tyrannical former ruler don't hurt either). Therefore while Equestria is a Thaumocracy, the hereditary bit doesn't apply. Perhaps it's deiocentric, but I get the feeling that's just a word I've made up...

The thing about RPing a lecture is that unless it's in a Q&A format, the only real way that other characters can participate is by interrupting the lecturer. I imagine that most RPers don't want to have their characters be impolite and ask questions in the middle of a speech, unless there's very good reason to do so. Just something to keep in mind.

With that out of the way, I can either have Spin Tale show up or maybe I can create an excuse for my new griffon OC, Falco Krestelson, to attend the lecture.

Yeah, I kinda agree with Bellosh. I'm not really sure how a lecture would work in RP as it doesn't seem particularly interactive.

That said, it does at least sound interesting, and if you find a way to proceed with it, I'd definitely consider throwing one of my Stalliongrad based characters that way if I can find cause to.

You make a good point; I had pictured it as more of a seminar/Q&A than a lecture, especially as the good professor hasn't really had opportunity to prepare any notes. Perhaps I should change the title to reflect this.

Your point stands however, I do need to think some more on how to make this more interactive. I'll mull it over with my spare grey matter while I'm at work (data entry and receptionist duty leaves me with plenty of surplus cerebral runtime) and update this once I get home.

In the meantime, any suggestions would be much appreciated.

EDIT: Okay, it's lunch time and here are my current thoughts:

Instead of a lecture/seminar, how about an IC unstructured debate, very loosely moderated by Prof. Smirk (who will of course be participating himself, so plenty of opportunity for blatant bias).

Here's my idea for a topic: "Hereditary thaumocracy is the best form of government." Ashen will be arguing in favour of this, purely for the sake of irony, and deliberately subverting his own points to boot. Main problem with this (as far as I can see right now) is that I'm unsure whether the Equestrian government is hereditary or deiocentric (is that even a word? it is now) in Mane RP. Will have to check with helpstaff, but if I'm wrong this can easily be changed.

Does this sound like it could work?

Right, so I figure I've been lurking long enough, and it's well past time for me to actually jump into the RP hooves first by actually starting my own thread; no half-measures for saucy. My only active experience in the Mane RP this far has been in riverhippo's 100 Country Kisses thread, and I've not really done any forum-based RPing before Canterlot, so this may be a colossally bad idea. I have done plenty of tabletop and live action role-playing, I'm just unsure of how it's supposed to work in a forum context. Still, I want to give it a try, and hopefully people will be willing to help me out a bit.

Since my OC (Professor Ashen Smirk) is a lecturer who has just made the move from Canterlot to Stalliongrad, I thought a good way of introducing my character and having some fun would be to have his new superiors arrange for him to hold an inaugural lecture, open to students, faculty and members of the public. Unfortunately, they didn't give him any warning, so the first he heard about this was when he arrived in Stalliongrad the night before, after a long hike (walking from Canterlot to Stalliongrad seemed like such a good idea too), and saw a student handing out flyers.

My intention for this thread is to have Prof. Smirk trying to keep up his new happy & friendly façade while getting increasingly stressed, resisting the temptation to revert to his old lecture style (ie short-tempered diatribes against any topic that catches his attention, and Celestia help anyone trying to argue). However, RPing is a collaborative process, so this may end up going in a completely different direction (and I have no objections if this happens, sometimes that's the most fun part of RP).

Some questions:

• Does this RP sound like something you'd like to be part of?
  
• Does anyone have any handy forum-specific RP tips that I may not have picked up from the guides already available on the site?
  
• Is anyone currently RPing any Stalliongrad University affiliated characters, either student or lecturer? If so, would you be willing to give me advice on how much the setting has been developed?
  
• Are there any issues with this that don't appeared to have occurred to me?
  
• Is this a terrible idea which I should feel ashamed for having had?

Professor Ashen Smirk had never been fact to face with an angry griffon before, and regardless of the size of the creature in question, the experience was not one he cared to repeat. Thankfully, he wasn’t the target for long, as after a yell of “I'm not short!” Razor had spun away, only to be himself stunned by a verbal onslaught from the manic mare that seemed intent on monopolising him.

Ashen’s train of thought was completely derailed by the barrage of blissful babbling that followed, collateral damage from a salvo which had left the griffon rather subdued. Ashen’s brain tried to keep up with the torrent emerging from the pink pony’s mouth, but could only process the occasional phrase.

At this point, two things dawned on Ashen Smirk. The first was that ponies outside the halls of Canterlot University didn't necessarily share the academic habit of treating conversation as an intellectual challenge. He had assumed that any diatribe as ostensibly chaotic as the one he was privy to would have some kind of hidden structure, some key that would open up another layer of meaning.

The mention of raccoons threw that idea out of the window. In Professor Smirk’s esteemed opinion, the only thing that a raccoon could symbolise was a small mammal with distinctive facial markings.

The second realisation was that he had been completely ignored. In academic circles he had been infamous if not renowned, and he had rarely left the orbit of the University since his late colt-hood. People had always listened to him, even if only to vehemently disagree with what he had to say.

He resisted his inclination to object to this treatment, and then realised why. Being completely unheeded was actually rather refreshing.

I have to finalise plans for a meeting of my LARP group at an expo this weekend, and organising LARPers is like herding cats at the best of times; I can't imagine how hard it would be if I'm spending half my free time lurking here.

Sorry to anyone expecting something from me in the next couple of days, I honestly thought I'd be up to date by today, but real life keeps getting in the way.
