A warm wind swept from the Painted Pinto Desert into Appleloosa, buffeting the houses with bits of sand it brought along with it. In time it had worn all the sides of the buildings smooth and dulled colours. On the outskirts of town, the dusted red schoolhouse stood. The old building sprawled out awkwardly on the hard ground as it had originally been a ranch house, but later additions were made for more rooms and the school was born. A pair of doors, set like the teeth of a neutral smile in the building, opened up as the wind stilled and a stallion came out to prop the door. Age tinged his black mane with gray. A black tie fluttered against the brown fur of his chest as the wind picked up a little.

"Alright then," he gathered himself and then rang the bell just outside the doors to let ponies know the school was open. First day of school, and so many new ponies had enrolled. Being the counselor, Pens Inkwell looked forward to the new students; unlike some of the teachers. The wind picked up again, and Pens trotted back inside.

Silt Treble watched the stallion go back into the building from a distance. He had finally made it, after that long trip from Stalliongrad, to Appleloosa. To this school. Silt looks around and notices a few ponies in the distance. "When does it start?" He had never been to a school before, his Great-Grandsire always taught him, or his mother. Silt shifted his weight on his hooves and stared at the desert beyond the school. He had traveled, but never this far southwest. The barren landscape and clear blue sky had Silt missing the thick vegetation of the land surrounding Stalliongrad, or the dense woods of Everfree forest. But the only green around here was the green of his mane, sticking out wildly. His coat didn't blend him in to well either, beinging dark purple-blue of storm. Silt's eyes drifted back to the school. He would wait until other ponies had gone inside. Despite how hot and dry his surroundings made him feel, he didn't want to be inside if he didn't have to.
