Pretty much the idea behind this one is the academy of magic in canterlot one one day while testing an experimental time travel spell lose control of the spell they are experimenting on. The cause is the test subject for the spell being whisked through time into the future with no way back to his/her own time. Though upon a chance with the infamous Milky Way he/she gets caught up in an intergalatic quest to search for clues in order to return to his/her time period.
