The Wonderbolts - Heroes of the Sky

In Equestria, few groups are more looked up to than the Wonderbolts. As the premiere aerial demonstration team of the land, ponies naturally look upwards to see their dazzling maneuvers. But aside from that literal sense, the Wonderbolts represent some of the most cherished qualities that pegasi can have. All who take up the blue and yellow flightsuits, and the winged lightning bolt insignia of the Wonderbolts, earn that privilege through demonstrating steadfast integrity, the will to go the extra mile, and the ability to work together with, and trust completely in, their teammates.

The origins of the Wonderbolts go back to about a millennium, to the first-year anniversary of the formation of what’s now the Royal Equestrian Guard. To celebrate this event, General Firefly was tasked with organizing an elite unit of fliers who could dazzle crowds with awe-inspiring aerobatics. According to stories, that first public performance, where magical lightning bolts rained down from the superbly energetic fliers, inspired so much wonder in the onlookers that henceforth, the royal aerial demonstration would forever be known as the Wonderbolts.

Entrance into the Wonderbolts is no easy feat. Typically, members of the squadron are chosen from among the best fliers in all branches of the Royal Equestrian Guard. However, civilian pegasi also have an opportunity to prove themselves by enrolling in the Wonderbolts Academy, a mountaintop school of hard knocks specifically designed to weed out all who can’t live up to the values of the elite airborne unit. Those who make it through the initial training and the battery of grueling written tests are expected to partake in a grueling schedule of airshows all across Equestria, and even beyond.

Training never ends for this team; the Wonderbolts practice constantly to maintain peak condition and coordination at all times. Fliers who don’t train are a danger to the entire team; a single slip-up or mistimed move could potentially result in ugly crashes and more. But despite the hard work and the risk, many pegasi dream of joining the Wonderbolts one day. Those few who take up to the heavens to perform Bomb Bursts, Diamond 360s, and Icaranian Sun Salutations are regarded as idols by young and old alike.
