[Baltimare] Mystery of the Spoooky Ghost Ship [Closed]

Oh, no. Just when she thought she might be safe--just when she thought she might have a chance of not getting gobbled up--woe of woes, her sole source of cover was whipped off of her in one fell swoop! But--was it ghosts? It...it didn't sound like ghosts. The voice was way too quiet and not so boomy as the others had been just a second ago.

"Now I want you to imagine that this moment happened. You were gobbled up by sea monsters and disappeared, without a trace. Would your parents even know where you were? Where you went? Did you ever think about how worried they might be?... Would you stop screaming?"

What. The. Flip? That...that definitely was NOT a ghost. Ghosts wouldn't care to bring up her parents...would they?

"Hey, you okay?"

And...suddenly there was a pegasus stallion peering over the box at her. Wait, wasn't that the guard that had landed before?

"I...I..." Tripp belatedly thought to uncurl herself from the little ball of fright she'd huddled down into, but oh, how she still shook! And why not? SOMEpony had just tricked her into thinking she was going to be eaten by ghosts or sea monsters! Who even DID something that mean to a poor little foal?! Much to her relief, she found her rapidly rising indignation and anger to be far stronger than what was left of her terror. Why shouldn't she give them a piece of her mind? Did she really have to just take this in silence like a good, meek little foal?

"I...I'm okay, but--" The little filly sniffed more than necessary, sitting up a bit and swiping an arm over her eyes. "--I was so scaaaared!" she wavered, adopting a teary-eyed, truly distraught facade as she gestured an accusatory hoof at Midnight Mask. "Yuh-you didn't have to scuh-scuh-scare me like that! Why did you have to be so meeeaaaan?!"

Conveniently enough, pretending to break down into a blubbery, pitiful mess seemed to be a nice way to hedge around any of the really valid points Midnight had brought up--like the obvious fact that she had snuck aboard without permission, and yes, how would her parents have felt about that, or if something really bad  had happened? Not to mention she could claim having been too distraught to hear anything the detective stallion had asked her, to boot. But hey, if it got attention off of her long enough for her to still make something of this venture, or at least milk some pity and comforting out of it instead of an all-around scolding...

And now the filly was having a crying fit.

Lane was starting to question deciding to do this now. He simply facehooved once more and just waited for the others to do something about this. He wasn't good with kids anyway.

Being a proprietor of a haunted house, this was not the first time Midnight Mask had scared someone so bad as to make them cry. She'd retrieved full grown ponies from the depths of the maze, assuring them all the while that it was just pretend, giving them sweets, and doing her level best to make sure they were okay as she escorted them out. This also meant she had seen the process of fear, time and again,  and the way that emotional process broke down. Fear gave way to panic, panic to despair, despair to crying. In this case, fear broke quickly, and there was no despair at all.

While Midnight couldn't be 100% sure, considering she'd snuck aboard a ship in search of ghosts, the chances that the Filly was exaggerating her distress seemed likely. Rather than call the foal out on it, for right now, Midnight Mask opted for pragmatism.

"Well, you came on board to have a spooky experience, so I gave you one! But, I can't bring a foal into a potentially dangerous environment without having permission from her parents. So I guess we head back now. Captain?" Midnight asked, and the captain's face relaxed as he sighed some relief.

"It's a shame, a downright shame we have to go." the captain said as he started the engine again, his teeth chattering in terror... wait, that wasn't his teeth this time...

The engine sputtered and clanked as something on it broke.

"Oh no. Um..." the captain said.

"The engine died? Seriously?" Midnight Mask asked with a raised eyebrow.

The captain began assessing the damage and initiating repairs.

"Well, since we're stuck here anyway, do we want to check it out?" Midnight Mask asked. Maybe, just maybe, they could do a little investigating.

Y'know, Arcus had dealt with scared ponies before. Ponies terrified of timberwolves, of monster infestations, of... hell, their own shadows. The list goes on, and on, and on...

But there is nothing. Nothing on that list, that can compare...

To the sheer volume and intensity of a terrified, sniffling filly. Was this what it was like to have foals?

Eeeeeh.

Probably.

Heaving a deep sigh, Arcus stared on, as the filly blubbered and sputtered all about Midnight's little "act". Indeed, she was scared, that much was obvious. Even before she started wailing...

"Woah, okay, calm down! It's over, you'll be fine... " Arcus replied, watching the frantic filly go through a flurry of emotions...

They'd definitely need to do some major damage control to live through this.

Horseapples.

"I'm not sure saying that you intended to scare her out of her wits is a good ide- Oh, okay, nevermind, then." Arcus thought, mentally sighing, but immediately felt better at hearing Midnight's next few words. Well, at least she was willing to put the foal first, something that Arcus was very relieved to see her do.

Something he was not relieved to see, however, was the fact that they had stopped moving.

Double horseapples...

Wait, check it out? Now?

"Do what you want, but I'm staying with her." Arcus said, moving to stand, while, subtly casting a worried glance towards the filly. Honestly, if he wasn't worried before, he definitely was now.

He's faced monsters from all over Equestria, but trust him...

Nothing's scarier than an angry parent.

Just when Lane thought he was in the clear... of course... the boat stopped working.

He was seriously regretting coming to assist now. He wouldn't have if he had know something like this was going to happen.

"Well, since we're stuck here anyway, do we want to check it out?" Midnight Mask asked. Maybe, just maybe, they could do a little investigating.

"Might as well do something as we wait for the boat to repaired. When it is though, we're heading straight back to get this kid home" suggested Lane

"Well, since we're stuck here anyway, do we want to check it out?"

It was all Tripp Hardy could to to keep up her sniffley, weepy act at that--to her--wonderful news. Ha! They couldn't very well make her go home now, could they? Looked like there was only one other option, then, and that was to just take her along while there was nowhere else to go! Spooks! Excitement! Bragging rights and awesomeness! Ghost ship, here we come--

"Do what you want, but I'm staying with her." Arcus said, moving to stand, while, subtly casting a worried glance towards the filly.

Wait. Wait, what? SERIOUSLY? No. No no no no no. This couldn't be happening. They weren't seriously going to make her stay here and miss out on the whole thing, were they? She didn't come all this way out here just to sit on a tiny, un-wrecked, un-haunted boat and be foalsat for who knows how long! How was she supposed to impress her friends if all she got to do was just sit here and look at it from far away? Nuts and shoes, this wasn't fair!

Tripp muffled a sobby hiccup and turned as if wiping her eyes again, though really it was more to turn her back to the others so they wouldn't see the scowl on her face. What the buck was she going to do now? She couldn't just get left here! She had to think of a way onto that ship, and fast!

Sounds good gentleponies. Let's try to be quick then.

Midnight Mask sighed as she began digging into the box, retrieving a dull grappling hook apparatus and a pulley. Gripping it in her teeth, she began to give it a whirl, then a toss, missing with a sploosh. She reeled it in from the water, before taking another shot at it, hooking the edge. The apparatus itself spread out into a rope ladder when pulled upon, allowing a pony to climb it slowly.

She gave it a few more tugs before ascending, the ladder a little shakey, twisting slightly with her weight, but she made it up and over the edge, steadying and securing it for the next pony. Midnight then got the pulley affixed to the rail and lowered a hook.

Arcus, can you get this attached to my gear?” she asked, holding the ladder for Lane- it would be a lot easier to lift with another pony's help.

***

Upon the boat, the deck itself was empty, old wooden planks creaking, weather worn, but not rotted or covered in barnacles, likely preserved in some manner. Fog rolled up and out of the cabin, onto the deck and over the railing.

***

As all this went on, the captain was engrossed in his work, which wouldn't make it hard for Tripp to avoid his gaze. But as far as getting on the boat went, there was only a few routes- going up in the box, climbing without Arcus or anyone else noticing, or fitting through one of the holes in the bottom of the boat. Which meant swimming to the boat, then going it alone inside a (possibly) haunted ship. Or maybe she could convince them somehow?

There was no time to waste. Lane got on board the ship, carefully going up the rope ladder so he wouldn't fall off and have an untimely demise by drowning.

Lane took a look around the ship...

(( Fitting music. ))

"It's may be old, but, it's been maintained. If this is just some wreck, it's got to be recent. Plus, the ropes don't seem as old as the rest of the ship. It's possible somepony was trying to restore this ship. Of course if that's the case, that only brings up more questions. Like who was restoring it, why were they restoring it, and what happened to cause this? This is further proven with the sails. They could probably be repaired to the point where it could get this ship to some sort of 'sail-able' condition" thought Lane.

There were still too many questions. He took a further look around, he was trying to determine if anyone else could have been onboard besides them. After all, if this 'haunted' ship was a fake, that would mean somepony would have to be 'controlling' the sounds and other methods that made the ponies think the ship was haunted.

((Red text just means important info. It's how I'm used to handling 'investigation' type RP's. ))

Nodding upwards at Midnight, Arcus proceeded to take the offered hook, and, pulling it slightly, dragged it over to the crates of Midnight's gear, latching it on.

"Alright, pull it up!" Arcus called back, giving the rope a slight tug. It looked like it was attached pretty securely, and it probably wouldn't fall...

Eventually, Arcus found his gaze landing on the boat. Even from where he was standing, he could tell that it was in pretty bad shape. Hopefully, the others would be careful. They may be here to investigate, but he wouldn't hesitate to pull them all away if they got in danger.

"Especially that filly." Arcus chuckled mentally, putting his gaze back onto their boat.

He didn't want to face a parent's wrath, after all. Nor did he want to see... Well, anypony in danger.

The box of gear began to ascend as Midnight pulled the ropes. Though it took a little while (faster if Lane helped), the purple pony pulled the pack of paranormal paraphenalia onto the purportedly poltergeist plagued poopdeck.

Reaching her hoof in and fishing around, she scooped up a tiny black box with a meter, a knob, and two antennae.

"Okay, let's see... so, we aim at a cutie mark to calibrate." she says, aiming at Lane and adjusting the knob back and forth as it made a weird, wavery noise, before turning to a nice steady hum.

"There we go. Now we should be able to pick up the 'Paranormal Frequency!' WoOOooOOooh!" Midnight Mask said, wiggling her arms.

"...woooooOooooh..oooh...oo..."

Midnight turned, as she was not the source of that sound.

From the cabin doors, slightly ajar, the echoing noise issued as fog rolled out in a wave, a soft green light flashing from below deck.

Midnight Mask felt that wonderful mix of fear and excitement propel her forward toward the cabin doors, ready to explore the unknown...

It seemed it would be impossible to determine if anypony else was here without a thorough investigation of the entire ship.

Then...

"...woooooOooooh..oooh...oo..."

Lane also turned toward this noise.

"It's going to take a lot more than that to scare me..." thought Lane as he followed after the other pony who also seemed to be going toward the noise.

As Midnight Mask opened the doors fully and descended with Lane, the lingering fog billowing out spilled further onto the deck, thinning the clouds within the ship, letting them see in the dark interior of the ship. Green lights seemed to wink in and out in the gloom, causing the mist to suddenly come alive with an internal luminescence.

Midnight Mask's paranormal energy detecting doohickey provided a tiny bit of light as they continued on, enough to see a few feet in front of them, though she was transfixed with the screen.

"Not really getting anything... spooky, per se. But these little phantom lights are pretty strange." She said.

The ship opened up into a large galley section as they fully descended the stairs. Old chairs and a built in table dominated the middle of the room, with several side passages leading further into the ship.

"Is there anyone there who wishes to speak to us?" Midnight Mask asked.

"...wwwoooOOOoooooww..." echoed through the ship once again. And the ship, quite suddenly, lurched by a few inches, the entire structure groaning. There was a sudden chorus of chirping, squeaking, skittering noises...

***

Outside of the ship, the captain continued to struggle with the motor, when more fog began to pour over the top of the ship, and the entire structure groaned. Where it was once still, a wind had started to blow, whipping at the broken sails and causing the wreck to shudder.

From the many holes of the ship, small red eyes could be seen, when suddenly, hordes of rats began to swarm outward into the water! The chittering hordes scurried onto rocks, flotsam, anything that could float, including their tiny vessel! It was plain to see that if it continued, it could easily capsize their craft!

Lane could only roll his eyes at the pony trying to "contact" something. However...

Lane facehooved again briefly.

"If this really is a fake, whoever is doing this is really going all out..." thought Lane.

The other noises were obvious to him though.

"Mice huh? I suppose that's not surprising..." thought Lane

But since somepony had already talked to thin air, Lane gave it a shot too. Those his tone was a little more fierce.

"If you come out now, show yourself, and end this little ruse, maybe just maybe I'll be lenient and just charge you with inducing panic instead of property theft" stated Lane.

Though he didn't honestly think this would work. If somepony was behind this, they were obviously willing to keep going until they were discovered considering the steps they've taken so far just for the farce. Either way, it was still worth a shot.

The last few minutes had been exceedingly dull and resentful for a certain brick-coated filly. Even if she'd had time to sneak after the two investigators, or hide herself in the box they'd brought with them, there was still that annoying obstacle of the disappointingly attentive guard pegasus. So it ended up that Tripp could only watch as the line between the two vessels went away, and thus did her last chance at any bit of excitement or gratification for her troubles disappear.

There was little to gain now from staying all weepy and shaken, so it didn't take long for her to drop any pretenses and start sulking in silence. At least she still had plenty of those cinammon candies in her saddlebags to give her SOMETHING to do, but it was still just eating candy, and even though they were tasty Celestia knew that was hardly exciting or intriguing at all. Sure, she'd brought a lantern, so maybe she could have read a comic or something...if she'd remembered to bring a comic, or something to light the lantern with. Sigh.

Egads, this was boring.

Tripp had draped herself over the side of the little boat to glower out at the ship, heavily beaming all her resentment and frustration at it for daring to be so far out of hoof's reach. Why did there have to be such a stupid amount of water between her and it? And why, oh, why hadn't mom or dad taught her to swim? Maybe she could have just jumped overboard, swam over to the ship, and found a way to get up inside it before that guard realized what was happening. She didn't know if it would have actually worked, but heck, at least it could have been some kind of idea, and she might have been able to build up on it and make it an actual thing if it was actually possible in the first--

"Did it just move?"

Tripp sat bolt upright, spilling a couple pieces of candy from her open saddlebag in her excitement. Was it groaning? Oh gosh it was totally groaning! Things were actually happening, that she could see, from all the way out here! It was tilting over, and the sails were billowing, and a billion tiny red eyes were glowing out of the holes in the--red eyes?

Then the rats came. Tons of them, flowing out of the ship and over the rocks at an alarming speed, and then suddenly--OH GOSH NO THEY WERE ON THE SHIP, SWEET CELESTIA THEY WERE ON THE SHIP.

Safe to say, Tripp was no longer excited, so much as terrified--for real, this time. The filly let rip with another shrill chalkboard shriek, reactively moving to cling onto the closest object that could provide any semblance of stability or protection against the stampede; namely, the leg of a certain Arcus.

Well, for a certain blue-silver stallion, the last few minutes had been...

Excruciatingly similar to guard duty. Huh.

He really didn't expect to spend his time watching the others on this mission, but since the other two investigators were out and away on the other, spookier boat, it left him to watch over their own vessel, and of course, the filly. He did his best to stay within her sight, as he didn't really want her to pull any stunts, or daring escapes...

At least it looked like she was fine with apparently eating... something she had brought along, while staring off at the other ship...

Indeed, this was boring...

"Did it just move?"

Wait...

"... What?" Arcus replied, confused, trotting over to Tripp as she stood near the side of the boat. He didn't see anything...

But he could definitely hear it.

A rustle from the boat's sails, floating around in the wind...

And a skitter from the ship's rats, flowing out of the vessel like water of their own, and making it over to...

Their boat.

Oh.

Doing his best to stay calm, Arcus stepped slightly away from the edge, before he barely managed to stifle a shout as he felt something latch onto his leg. Something big, heavy, and felt like it didn't want to let go...

Tripp.

With the filly scared out of her mind, made evident by a loud, ear-piercing shriek, Arcus knew he had to do something...

"... Right, hold on!" He said, somewhat hastily, as he pried Tripp off his leg, and placed her on his back instead. If they had to get away...

Well, there was really only one way to do that.

And so, unfurling his sizable wings, Arcus took to the air with a rush of wind and a clank of metal, making sure to keep Tripp firmly balanced on his back. As bad as a run-away filly would be...

Imagine what a drop-away would be like.

As the tiny vessel was swarmed by teeming vermin, threatening to capsize it, the Captain, through some sheer combination of terror and training, began bailing rats at an impressive pace, scooping them up in a bucket and pouring them out, over and over rapidly. While he momentarily shifted the tide through a rapid series of motions, the bucket's handle caught on the engine and pulled.

Vroom!

In a sudden plume of black smoke and clanking, the engine roared to life.

"It's fixed! It's fixed! It's fiiiiiiiiixxxed!!!....." The captain yowled as the boat took off like a shot into the fog, covered in teeming rats, fading from sight and sound.

The deck of the ship lay well below the flying pegasi and foal, it's surface clear beyond misty fog filled with glowing green lights and Midnight's box of ghost hunting gear.

***

Inside the galley of the ship, just down the first flight of stairs, Midnight Mask and Lane had begun their investigation.

"If you come out now, show yourself, and end this little ruse, maybe just maybe I'll be lenient and just charge you with inducing panic instead of property theft"

"Property theft!-Property theft!-Property theft!-operty theft- theft" the ship echoed in response.

"Those are some pretty killer acoustics." Midnight Mask said, knocking on the wall, and knocking her hoof against the floor, the sound carrying in an echo.

"I think we're pretty structurally intact up here, despite all that noise. Maybe it's being maintained by a supernatural force?" Midnight ventured lamely, hoping for a spooky explanation for what might have been a major indication of something else going on.

Lane was getting annoyed, but didn't show it.

"If you're trying to get me to believe in ghosts, you're going to need better evidence than that" remarked Lane to the pony.

As for his new observations, his voice carried, but the earlier voice didn't. That meant there weren't speakers involved. So, if this was a fraud, somepony else would have to be in the room whispering.

Plus, the so-called 'lights' seems to be fire. Which had to have some sort of source. A lighter perhaps? Although there was probably other ways to make fire with all the tricks magicians seem to be able to do as well as just practical jokes.

Either way, Lane began to meticulously search the current room he was in. What was he looking for? A source for the earlier noise, which in reality, meant he was looking for another pony in the room.

Well, at least they were getting away from all the rats. But now Tripp's screeching had only slightly wound down to a startled yelp, first at being swung off of the pegasus' leg and onto his back, and then again at the sudden stomach-dropping feeling of the deck shrinking away rapidly below them. She hunched down low and tried to get as tight of a hold as she could, lest she slip and plummet into the frigid, murky depths--

Aaaand...there went their boat.

It was a while before Tripp could speak again. She spent a while just shaking and catching her breath and wits again after the whole clustermess of all that had happened, before finally finding the presence of mind to lift her head and look after where the boat had zipped away.

"He...left," she stated blankly. The foal's face quickly fell upon registering how much more miserable their plight had become. "Now how are we gonna...?"

She trailed off, looking back the other way at the creepy ship. It seemed the rats had stopped flooding out, or at least if there were any still coming out then they had lessened a bit. She couldn't tell exact details from this high up. Still, how sad was it that the only bit of (mostly) solid footing around was an old, soggy, creepy, possibly-haunted...

Oh. Right!

"So are we gonna have to get on the ghost ship now?" Tripp asked, doing her best not to sound TOO excited at the prospect. It was obvious her mood had lifted suddenly, though. And why not? This was pretty much the whole point of sneaking out here in the first place! Sure, it would have been nice if rats and being left behind hadn't been the way for her luck to change, but what the heck, it had still changed in her favor!

Y'know, on the list of things that Arcus would never think would actually happen on this little adventure...

Well, there being an actual ghost would probably be on the top. Buuuuuuut.

Being stuck in the air with a filly that was holding onto his neck for dear life would probably be pretty high up on that list too. Oh, yeah, and the boat just zooming off and leaving them. That was pretty unexpected too.

Sigh...

What's crazier is, this adventure would probably find a way to get even weirder...

Eh, they did say be prepared... Wait, for what?

Oh, this:

"So are we gonna have to get on the ghost ship now?" Tripp asked, doing her best not to sound TOO excited at the prospect. It was obvious her mood had lifted suddenly, though.

"I..." Arcus started to reason, but he quickly realized it was useless. After all, he couldn't fly forever, now could he? Flight in armor, he could probably take for a while. But flying in armor with a filly hanging onto his back? Even that was too dangerous for his tastes.

"Well, I guess so..." He sighed, managing to turn his head to quickly glance over at the filly on his back. Rolling his eyes with a chuckle, however, he turned his gaze towards the 'spooky' boat that Midnight was currently on, and carefully started flying towards it.

"You sure do look happy about that, though."

((OOC: Sorry for the lateness on this! Kinda had to leave for our bivouac, and was busy for a day or two after. I'll be back on my normal posting schedule, though!))

"If you're trying to get me to believe in ghosts, you're going to need better evidence than that" remarked Lane to the pony.

“I’m not trying to get you to believe in ghosts, because if we found real ones, I wouldn’t need to. And frauds just mess everything up.” Midnight said.

Lane seemed convinced, searching in the very room for some hidden pony. There was a staircase leading down into the ship, with multiple doors leading to what would presumably be a kitchen and some bedrooms, but in the room itself, the only real hiding place would be under the tables, or in the lingering fog.

A firefly landed directly onto Lane’s nose, glowing, then entering the fog, giving it the eerie luminescence.

Well, the mysterious lights were suddenly explained. That’s one more mark against a haunting. Maybe the other ponies were right? This was nothing more than-

Did something just move? As Lane continued his search, something had flickered behind a doorway. As Midnight Mask peered into the darkness, the door burst open as a series of disembodied, sparkling, glowing white shirts began to flood into the room, racing towards them!

Midnight Mask gave out a scream and started running at a full gallop! Of course, she did break into a smile on the way- this was scary! Yay!

Fireflies. That explains the light source at least.

Lane noticed the flicker, and when the shirts started 'attacking' he kept his composure, unlike his cohort.

"Okay. This time for sure. A flicker could only mean one thing, and with these floating shirts, this has to be it!! It's magic!! Somepony is using magic to cause this to happen. But they made one catastrophic mistake. They didn't think anyone would see them begin their spell, but they can't escape my eyes!! I saw it!! They can't escape me now!!" thought Lane

At this point, Lane went in a full force sprint towards the light source, as he attempted to dodge the 'attacking floating shirts.' He was heading straight for the doorway where the flicker came from, and if he was able to make it there, he would immediately make a 360 degree turn and buck the door open, to see what was behind it, which, he assumed, would be a unicorn currently using a magic spell to cause the 'floating attacking shirts.'

((Which means its up to you MidnightMask whether Lane makes it or not or something else happens to stop him))
