Using a gif image as profile pic

So a couple friends and I are can't seem to use an animated gif image as our profile picture, I can see other people can so I'm just wondering if we're missing out a fundamental step or something.

The image may be too big. That happened to me once when I tried posting an animated gif. However, the animated gif that worked was about 100x100 and 150x150 pixels. File size was around 100kb-200kb or something if I recall.
