Character Summary: Winter Iris was born and raised in Stalliongrad, by parents who deeply believed that the natural beauty of the world was one of the greatest things one could experience. In her youth, she disagreed. There were many more interesting things than the outdoors in Equestria. Winter was secretly jealous of her pegasi and unicorn classmates at school, and withdrew into herself as a result of not wanting to offend anyone. She knew the others would be soaring through the clouds one day, or manipulating the mysterious flows of magic. What would she be doing all the while, watching? This disgruntled outlook on life eventually led to isolation from other young ponies and a rarely expressive attitude. Winter hardly talked, let alone made any friends.

When she had completed her schooling, the young Winter Iris went on a lonely journey of self-discovery. It wasn't until she found an old stallion toting a half-moldy hunk of bread through the square of Manehattan that anything changed. The wizened earth pony was humming happily, and had a content look upon his features despite being bedraggled and dirty. When Winter asked him how he could possibly be so cheerful when he obviously had so little in which to rejoice, his answer was simple.

"I've got all I could possibly want," he replied. "Look around you. The sun brilliantly rises at Celestia's command, and the moon shines at night while chasing our impish Luna across the stars. I have what I need to get by, and Equestria itself always shows me something new every day."

At that point, a light drizzle had begun to fall, and many of the Manehattanites began galloping for their homes or other indoor locations. Winter, however, stayed with her new companion as he rose his muzzle to the sky.

"Even the rain plays its song for me, if only I stop to listen."

His words struck a chord within Winter Iris, and she stood for hours in the rain with the mysterious stallion, listening a melody that she had never known existed. The whole of Equestria came together in a grand symphony of beauty and life; even the ponies had their place in it. Winter never saw her friend past that day, but his lesson stayed with her from then on. She learned that true beauty came from within, despite her cold exterior for many of the past years. It was at that time that the earth pony's cutie mark sparkled into being: delicate flower petals over a snowflake, ever reminding that you can always find something amazing in the most unexpected of places if you only look.

After her discovery Winter's jealousy of lacking wings or magic faded, and she began to try and share what she had learned with everyone around her. Gone was the quiet, lonesome pony that had wandered from town to town. In her place was a mare that had learned that her parents were right all along. Warmth and friendliness crept into her long-closed personality.

Winter stayed in Manehattan for a while longer, exposing herself to fine society and arts to further develop her appreciation for the world around her, as well as others' interpretations of it. She then resumed her travels with new vigor and purpose. She attended a Sapphire Shores performance during this time, and saw music as a great way to express her newfound views of the world. At a night cafe in Fillydelphia, she took to the stage and sang for the first time. She received much applause for her heartfelt manner of performing. After several musical ventures, with more being planned each season, Winter Iris has settled in Canterlot when she's not traveling so she may attend art shows, parties, and generally appreciate life. Her ultimate goal is to be as well-known as Sapphire Shores, but she has never forgotten who opened her path to happiness: her parents, who truly knew their daughter from the beginning, and the unnamed stallion, who showed her that you didn't need to have wings or a horn to experience everything Equestria has to offer. She has since taken her given name for him as her own while on the stage, one she feels expresses him and and that day perfectly: Rainsong.

Miscellaneous: Winter now has a rather cultured personality and can be quite verbose at times, but is rather easygoing compared to her attitude in youth. She can be prone to bursts of excitement or silliness, such as singing loudly in the shower, and loves to eat (especially spicy food). As a result of long periods of emotional solitude before finding herself, she acts almost without concern for how others will perceive her. She knows being true to oneself and others is immensely important.
