Promontory:

As the Doctor said that only a pony by the name of Zecora might be able to help him Promontory felt a bit of hope come back into him.

"Any chance you know where she might live at?"

He asked as the doctor began to apply the plaster over his injured leg so that his leg would be kept firmly in place. When the Pegasus opened up a wheel chair though Promontory stubbornness immediately came flooding back.

"Thanks doc but I ain't no mare, I can at least handle walkin on my own.

He said a bit coldly as slide off the bed attempting to balance him self on the new plastered leg.

"It's the policy that you must leave in a wheel chair... Once your off the premises, you can do what you please with the wheel chair." Golden Heart informed the earth pony and pushed the chair closer to him. "And Zecora lives in a hut in the Everfree Forest." Golden Heart had done all that the rules of medicine would allow him to. He could not deny the stallion the use of his legs once he was no longer on Golden Heart's property. However, the pegasus did hope that the information he had given the stallion would be enough to answer his concerns. It was clear that the stubborn pony loved his job and Golden understood that feeling. He, himself, loved to work. It was his passion.

Promontory:

Promontory began to feel annoyed but decided to comply for the moment. When the doctor informed him that a pony named Zecora lived in the Everfree Forest might be able to help him Promontory began to think back to the maps he had read through about the ponyville area.

The Everfree Forest....I heard it's a risky place. Still If I can get myself healed faster it might be worth the risk.

Promontory thought as he sat down in the chair waiting to pushed out by the doctor.

"Thanks doc, I'll try to give her a visit."

Promontory said as he adjusted his scarf and began to stretch out his leg so that he could began the long walk towards the Everfree forest.

Two days after he had met the heroic earth pony, Golden Heart was returning to work. His daughter had her usual work round back. That meant he wouldn't see her this morning. He sighed softly to his self as he put on his doctors jacket. The stallion flicked through his morning letters. He didn't have many of them. They were all junk mail for some reason. He tossed them into the small waste paper bin before he sat down at the front desk and waited for the first patient of the day.

Promontory:

"Yo Promontory; Buddy. Ya'll gonna be fine?"

A fellow conductor pony said to the toast colored pony. Promontory let out a snort to try to hide his pain but it was obvious he wasn't.

"I told you comin here was a bad idea buddy. Now I'm gettin ya to that clinic ya mentioned yesterday."

The other pony said as Promontory felt the fellow Earth Pony prop him onto his back.

"Put...me...down...Caboose...I ain't...no weak...mare."

Promontory weakly protested but the Earth pony didn't listen and began to gallop away from the Everfree Forest. As the two ponies got closer to town Caboose saw the clinic the Promontory had mentioned after the group had seen him with his broken leg. The large earth pony pushed open the doors to the small clinic and went up to the Pegasus at the front desk.

"You...*huff*...the...*huff*...Doc...*wheeze* who helped...*gasp* Promontory two days ago?"

Caboose winded out trying to catch his breath as he adjusted his body to better support Promontory.

"He's hurt really bad. We ran into a Chimera on our way to Zecora's."

He said as he looked back to Promontory who was letting out a small wheeze of air.

"can ya'll help him?"

"Of course I'll help him... Bring him through for me please and then rest up easy, my fine fellow, so you can catch your breath." Golden Heart replied. He had a feeling that he would see that Earth pony again. After all, the Everfree forest is a dangerous place for anypony. It is even more dangerous to those who are recovering from injury or ill health. However, Golden wasn't there to lecture the poor pony until he fell asleep out of boredom. He was there because he had a duty of care towards all of his patients. The stallion wasn't one for mindless chit chat either. The earth pony did look in bad shape, even by a slight glimpse. Golden began to wonder if it was a good idea to tell him about Zecora. But he had no time to dwell on the past. Golden Heart had to stay in the present tense for his work to be done. He lead the way to his office and held open the door as a kind gesture.

Promontory:

Caboose quickly went into the room and propped Promontory onto the available bed. His cast leg bumped onto the frame making him let out a small yelp of pain that crackled from his lungs.

" That really...hurt...ya...jerk."

Promontory breathed out while glaring at the fellow Earth pony. Each word sounded wheezy like something was pushing on his lungs.

"Sorry Buddy but Docter Heart is gonna help ya.kay?"

He said as he smiled at his friend before backing out of the room so that the doctor could get in.

"Stupid blockhead."

Promontory thought to himself as he watched one pony enter and the other enter.

"Guess...I'm....in your..care again doc."

Promontory wheezed out again trying to push himself up but to no avail.

"Say doc....before ya'll begin.....*wheeze*Can you fix...my side? It's...Startin....to burn."

Promontory continued as he lifted his head to where the Chimera had slashed at him and taken a good chunk of skin off.

Golden Heart took a closer look. He was worried that the Chimera had punctured one of his lungs. The stallion knew that he needed to take an x-ray beforw he could act on the healing process. But he needed to relieve some of the pain so that his patient woulde feel comfortable lying still. "Okay... I'm going to give you some pain relief and then I'll do a chest x-ray... You may have punctured a lung." He informed the stallion so that he understood what was happening. Golden Heart searched for a veing in the patient's leg. Ge then inserted an IV drip containting fluids that would keep the patient hydrated while relieving most of the pain. The pain relief could not take away the full extent of the suffering. However, it would make the pain manageable. He secured the drip bag on a stand before he went to get the x-ray machine.

Promontory:

"F-fine."

Promontory mumbled out as he felt the doctor begin to insert an IV into his leg. It took only a few seconds for the pain reliever to kick in but it did help with the burning sensation of the gashes on his side. Still Promontory kept continuing to wheeze making the Earth pony frustrated.

"Stupid Chimera. Stupid Caboose. Stupid Foals. Stupid leg. I could of avoided all this if I had just been a few minutes earlier."

Promontory thought to himself as he remembered how he wanted to make the train go a bit faster but instead slowed it down so it would be right on time that eventually lead to his injuries. His cropped tail twitched showing his frustration was increasing even though he stayed still has the doctor began to scan his chest. However, as soon as the doctor was finished promontory felt like their was some kind of large mucus ball stuck in his chest making him start to cough until he felt a metallic tasting liquid start to get into his throat.

"Doc....you can *wheeze* save the X-ray....It's punctured.

Promontory said before he turned his head to the side as spit up a bit of bubbly blood.

"The x-ray is already done... And you are correct." Golden Heart replied as he turned to the pony who had now coughed up some scarlet liquid bubbles. He quickly grabbed an oxygen mask and placed it over the patient's face to make it easier to aid the flow of oxygen to his body. He looked closely at the size of the wound... It was too large for a specialised bandage. It looked as though it wouldn't heal on its own. He had to break it in the correct way towards his patient. He wasn't paid to lie. Golden knew what had to be done and he knew it would be for the best. "The only way I can fix this is by operating... You'll by asleep in minutes and won't feel a thing." He told his patient.

Promontory:

When the Pegasus let Promontory know that he needed surgery his slightly twitched from the a mix anger and fear.

"Aw buck."

Was the only thing Promontory could say before he began to cough some more a bit more scarlet liquid came up. As the anesthesia began to kick in Promontory naturally tried to stay focused from the wooziness of the medication even though it was a losing battle.

"Doc.... just open *wheeze* me up....I'm...not...a... weaklin."

Promontory mumbled out before the anesthesia finally won out and the toast colored stallion was finally knocked out cold.

Golden Heart quickly scrubbed up for surgery. He attatched a heart moniter to the stallion as well as a breathing tube. The doctor worked carefully. His consentration didn't falter in the slightest. The stallion was careful and level headed. He knew the responsibility that weighed down on his shoulders. But Golden was used to it. He went to medical school and got the grades. He got the experiance. Golden knew what he was doing. He knew it would be a long operation, considering that he had more than just a lung to repair. The operation lasted three hours.

Once it was completed, Golden Heart added the antidote to the IV drip fluids. This would allow his patient to wake up gently. He removed the breathing tube and replaced it with an oxygen mask. All that was left was the wait for him to awaken.

  • 2 weeks later...

Silverbolt, a deep blue Pegasus, stumbled through the door of the clinic. "How....did...I get...into this mess...", he wheezed as he coughed uncontrollably and shook with chills. He had flown through a storm doing his rounds and was soaked to the bone. "Dr. (hack!) Heart... (cough) it's Silverbolt! I...don't feel...so good...", he said as he barely made it to a waiting room chair. He was absolutely exhausted and burning with a fever that had him half delirious as he reached for a bucket. "Ugh, I really stuck my hoof in it now...", he said to himself as he leaned his face into the bucket.

Golden heard the voice of a pegasus in the waiting room. He calmly trotted out into the waiting room. He saw a pegasus shaking and coughing. The blue pegasus looked at though he had the flu. A bad case of the flu. But, Golden didn't want to jump to conclusions. It was always a wise idea to health check the patient before coming to conclusions. However, the pegasus looked weak. Golden Heart decided to carry him into the examination room. He carefully lifted the stallion onto his back. "You leave all of the work to me..." He told the stallion as he started to walk.

Through the fog of fever, Silverbolt saw Golden Heart trot out and lift him onto his back. Replying to his statement with a weak smile as he shook again, "You... (cough) remember me? (wheeze) You examined... (hack, cough) me once before... When Cloudius took care of that storm cloud... (cough!) in the Everfree.". Silverbolt wheezed in another breath and exhaled as his consciousness became broken, the remaining trip to the exam room was a series of vignettes in later recollection.

The pegasus asked if Golden remembered him. As he walked, Golden thought about his past patients. He did remember. 'Pixie's friend... If she saw him now, she'd be in tears.' The thought crossed his mind as Silverbolt slipped out of conciousness. Golden Heart sighed. He would have to answer that question when his patient was awake. The stallion carefully placed his patient in a spare bed. He used his stethoscope to listen to Silverbolt's heart and lungs. His heart sounded fine. It was very strong. But his breathing seemed to be slightly on the shallow side. Golden took precautions by placing an oxygen mask on the blue stallion. He checked his patient's pulse. That was also normal. Golden went to get a thermometer. He wanted to take Silverbolt's temperature.

Silverbolt lay upon the examination table, breathing shallowly as the added oxygen from the mask brought him back from his fever dreams. His eyes half open, he watched Golden Heart leave for a moment. "Doctor? (cough) I think... (cough) I need that bucket (hack)." He felt miserable, his stomach doing cartwheels in his abdomen. "Please, (gulp!) hurry... (wheeze) I don't... Wanna... (sneeze) mess up your floor.", he said weakly.

The grey stallion lifted off the oxygen mask and placed a bucket beside Silverbolt. "Take it easy now Silverbolt... I'm just going to get a thermometer." He informed the stallion so that he wouldn't worry him. Golden went back over to his medical supplies. He rummaged through them for a short period of time. After he had found the thermometer, Golden Heart returned to his patient's side. He kindly waited for his patient to vomit before he was even to think of attempting to take his temperature.

Silverbolt took the offered bucket and stick his face into it for what seemed to be an eternity. He thought he was gonna see his stomach inside the bucket when he finished but to his relief, his stomach wasn't in the bucket. "Thank you Doctor. I'll try...to...take it easy now.", he replied with a tone of gratitude as the doctor returned with a thermometer. Opening his mouth, Silverbolt waited for the doctor to take his temperature as he leaned back with a sigh.

Golden placed the thermometer in his patient's mouth. He waited a few minutes before taking it out. His eyes widened when he saw the temperature. "Your running a very high fever... You also have a severe case of the flu." Golden Heart informed Silverbolt. "I'm going to have to keep you in for a few days... Just until I can see some improvement in your condition." Golden Heart placed the oxygen mask over the stallions mouth once again. His patient needed the oxygen.

Silverbolt nodded, he wasn't going to protest in the slightest. "Wow. I guess this is what I get for flying through a storm.", he said with a sheepish grin. He lay back on the bed, mask over his face muffling his words. "I thought I could just fly it off, but I guess I was wrong. It's my fault for not taking better care of myself and just working through it all.", he said to Golden Heart as his eyes began to close. "I hope my friends come and see me....zzzzzzz..", he said as he fell asleep in the bed. He still looked pretty terrible but it seemed that the worst was over and all that was needed was a few days of bed rest and he'd be out flying again!

Golden Heart sighed deeply. It seemed as though everypony was forgetting about their own health and safety. The stallion just didn't understand how that could even be possible. But he wasn't one for arguing or scolding his patients about their mistakes. They could learn from the experiance and not from the tone of his voice. Golden Heart sat by his desk and began to look at all of his paper work. He had left it for so long that his files were all a mess. It was quite the embarrassment for the pegasus. Golden knew it was a fault of his own,

Screw Loose wandered into the hospital whistling softly to her self. 'Urgh... Mental block. I'll probably come up with a new perfomance joke sooner or later. Maybe a little bit of volunteering here could help spring a few ideas into my head. I know hospitals can have their funny sides. Why doctors can't see it, I'll never understand. This could be different though. It is just a small clinic with only one doctor running it.' The blue mare thought to her self as she looked around. As usual her grey mane and tail were both terribly messy. But she didn't care one bit. She had tried everything to fix it up and nothing exactly worked for her wild mane and tail. The earth pony couldn't see anypony at the front desk. "Hello... Is anypony here?" She called out.

Golden Heart heard a pony and left the examination room. He calmly trotted out into the waiting room. There, the stallion saw a blue mare with a mane that suggested she'd been hit by lightning. However, he recognised her as Ponyville's unusual comedian and didn't comment about her mane. He heard from somepony that she disliked how it never stayed neat. "How may I help you? Screw Loose, isn't it?"

"I came here to volunteer for work... I always help out in the community and yes, that's my name." The mare responded.

Golden thanked her for the offer and lead her into the examination room. He told her about his disorganised files and she seemed quite eager to order the paperwork in the correct file folders for him. That made his life much easier. The pegasus went back to monitering his two patients. He was glad that his examination room was quite big.

Silverbolt was sweating bullets in his sleep. He awakened suddenly as his stomach betrayed him again and he stuffed his snout in the bucket again. That done, he realized that he was extremely thirsty, tongue felt like sandpaper in his mouth. He croaked,"Water (cough) please.". He felt even hotter than before, his fever seemed to have gone up a little more in his short nap. The bed rattled as Silverbolt shook even more violently than before, nearly ripping the mask off his face.

Golden Heart poured water into a glass. He gave the glass to Silverbolt. After that, the stallion grabbed a clip board and began to write notes on it. He was carefully monitering his patient's condition. After he had done that, Golden prepared an IV drip for the stallion. He didn't want him to dehydrate.

Screw Loose peacefully continued to sort the paperwork into the correct files. Occasionally, she coughed. But the mare dismissed it as nothing to worry about. She believed she was still recovering from the illness she had in hospital.

"Got a bit of a cough?" Golden asked the mare as he tended to Silverbolt.

"It's nothing really..." The mare insisted.

"If you say so.. But it does sound like a bad cough to me." He replied.

Silverbolt looked up at Golden Heart and stared at the glass of water like a pony stranded in a desert without water for several days. He grabbed the glass of water from Golden Heart and drained it almost immediately before saying, "Thank you. What are you marking in that clipboard?". He felt a slight prick in his foreleg as the doctor hooked him up to an IV drip. Giving a smile of gratitude, his stomach suddenly growled loudly and Silverbolt wasn't sure if he was ready for food just yet.
