Starry Requiem (Ready)

Name: Starry Requiem

Sex: Female

Age: Late teenager-young mare

Species: Unicorn

Eye colour: Blue-black.  It fills the entire space of her eyes, including her pupils; it’s a birth defect that resulted in her blindness.  It’s very uncomfortable to stare into, almost like an abyss; so she wears shades to cover them.

Coat: Midnight blue.  A vibrant yellow tattoo encircles and spirals down her neck like a giant spiral bracelet.  It circles three times around her neck.  Similar tattoos encircle all four of her hooves, although they circles around five time-much like a spring.

Mane/Tail: Her mane style is asymmetrical; going from an extremely short bob on the left side of her head, slanting to a long length all the way to her knees on the right side of her head.  Her mane is straight, but she has long, front bangs that curl up to frame her face.  From short to long, her mane is also dyed in a gradient from sharp red to deep blue.  She often parts her mane and braids the long side.  Her tail is the average length, and light blue.  Streaks of vivid yellow highlight her mane; however, her stylist made a bit of a mistake and dyed one too many streaks (to the point that you can’t tell if the original tail is blue or yellow).  She decided that she liked it, and has kept it that way since.  Her tail is braided into dreadlocks, and held by multicoloured glass beads.  Her left ear is pierced, with five differerent earings (a diamond tragus, a gold banded conch, a dangling crystal lobe, a silver band helix, and a copper industrial).  Her right ear is also pierced, but only three times (a diamond lobe, a gold helix, and a copper industrial).  She typically wears reflective shades, that have a metallic frame and “mirror” lenses.

Physique: She is the average height, but she is underweight and looks rather...bony.  he is most definitely not muscular, but is fit to a certain degree.  She is very passive-aggressive in words, but acts like a punk movie star.

Residence: Solstice Heights

Occupation: Astrophysicist in Infrared Astronomy for the Royal Canterlot Observatory

Cutie Mark: Infrared image of the Helix nebula.  Her mother took her (as the plus one) to a stargazing social in Solstice Heights (she had lived in Canterlot) when she was a young filly.  Like any other of her mother’s socials, she quietly sat away from the rest of the party group and listened to their conversations.  This time, she decided to practice her new, rare-learned spell that allowed anything within a radius to look infrared.  She knew that this spell would have no purpose for her, but thought that it was better than sitting bored like all previous times.  She practiced a few times on the flower in front of her (she felt it), then sent a spell like such into the sky; to the stars.  Immediately, something special happened inside her brain (she still doesn’t know what), and she found that she had a still image in her head of the sky (in infrared vision).  She cast the spell a few more times, pushing its radius, and caught “sight” of a few stars.  She then cast the spell on the party, and “saw” her mother for the first time.  Although it was a snapshot of the past and she could only “see” with constant casting of the spell, it was a miracle.  She ran to her mother, and told her what she discovered.  Her mother was amazed, then told her that her cutie mark had appeared.  The infrared image represented her ability and power within the spell (which she developed much further as she grew).  The Helix nebula was an ironic vision of her blindness, as it is in the shape of an eye.

History:  Her mother, Requiem Song, is a Canterlot Elite belonging to the House of Requiem.  Her father, Vesta Nebulae is the head astronomer of the Royal Canterlot Observatory.  He left her mother when Starry was a foal, and did nothing to mend things until at Starry’s urging when she was fifteen.  Starry lived a lonely and spoiled childhood.  She tried to attend school when she was of age, but was mocked, bullied, and teased so painfully that she often ran home at recess.  She convinced her caretaker, Regina Rose, to hire private tutors for her so that she could learn at home.  Her mother was rarely at home (never), and there were many rumors that she had found another stallion, although not confirmed back then.

Unfortunately, Requiem was a maverick, and found absolutely no joy in studying under the supervision of a strict, old school professor.  She often disappeared in the middle of class (two hour long “bathroom breaks”); as she grew, she often did not arrive to class at all!  She discovered the sciences, and hid herself in the family library while Regina read the books aloud to her.  She neglected her studies in anything that did not encourage or aid her in her study of physics, chemistry, or stellar sciences-and soon became quite rehearsed in those specific topics.  Eventually, she spent all her days in the library, and her tutors were dismissed.

When she was eleven, she went through a period of depression.  She felt unloved (her mother hadn’t visited since she was seven, and was rumored to have started another family with another stallion), uncared for (her maverick nature and private studying lead to a loss of all possible friends), and unwanted (the only one that “wanted” her was Regina, and that was her job-she was paid to be her caretaker).  She used a read-aloud spell to study without the aid of others, and spent countless hours in the library (only leaving the room for meals, bathroom breaks, and to leave for the public library).  Because of her genius IQ, she quickly mastered the subject of her studying: the sciences.

As a thirteen-year-old teenager, she learnt a lot of things.  First of all, hiding in libraries did not make you any more loved, wanted, or cared for-in any case, it encouraged more ponies to ignore you.   Secondly, ponies wouldn’t just come to you for no reason-you must give them a reason.  Thirdly, if your mother hasn’t come home in six year, she probably won’t next Hearth’s Warming.  She erupted from her shell, turning from an extreme introvert to an extrovert.  She attended every single gala, celebration, and party possible.  She became quite famous, both for her attitude and her endless source of news.  Scientific journalists would stick around her for her knowledge in the field-to publicly display her theories, studies, and research.  Gossip and celebrity writers would go to her for all the latest gossip (she was a Canterlot Elite, with fortune and newfound fame).  Health magazines and inspirational newspapers would interview her on how she overcame the boundaries of her blindness, her bravery into facing each and everyday, and how she she was able to take “snapshots of the past”.  She starting learning in the very fields that she had once dismissed; all in hopes of keeping up her reputation.  She also found a new spell that allowed her to “write” (she would dictate the words, and the enchanted quill would write).  She started “writing” stories, poems, plays as an outlet for the remaining emotions left from her depression.  She entered a few of her works in some contest, and won some of them (more popularity and even more fame).

When she was fifteen, she came to the startling realization that “money can’t buy you everything”.  Her mother continued paying for all her expenses, and gave her monthly allowances (that gave her way more than enough money to count as a millionaire).  Her money had bought her the path she was on-fame.  However, no matter how hard she tried, she could never achieve that hollow gap within her heart.  Despite being loved my fans and reporters alike, it wasn’t the kind that would last.  Money couldn’t buy her what she so desperately needed-a parent’s love.  As time passed: it became harder and harder for her to accept the rumors, and she unwittingly passed a few herself:

“Requiem Song and Stardust Swirl-a couple?  Find out on page 46!

“Three lovebirds; one forgotten.  Requiem Song refuses to acknowledge previous family.”

“Is that an engagement ring?  Find out what will become of Requiem Song’s previous family on page 32!

Soon, some of the gossip began to internally hurt her:

“Requiem Song now Requiem Swirl-leaves Royal Household of Requiem to join Royal Household of Swirl.”

“The married life-Requiem Swirl’s journey of love with descendant from the Starswirl family.”

Page 97: Swirled and pregnant?  New wife and mother-to-be?”

As more time, although not much, passed, newspapers and magazines started to feature her with her mother:

“Requiem Song’s secret filly: Starry Requiem?”

“Requiem Song’s new filly born: Seasong Swirl-but is this her first foal, or her second?  Learn more on page 25.

“Starry Requiem-the star that was outshone by the next.  This is her story-tune in for tomorrow’s newspaper special!

Her mother denied all possible stories that related her to Starry, and Starry was deeply hurt when she heard of that.  However, this did provide her with some more fame-although not the kind that she truly appreciated.  Still, she did nothing to stop the rumors:

“Starry Requiem not Requiem Swirl’s filly.  More news of page 46.

“Denial of child-Seasong Swirl is Requiem Song’s only current filly.”

Soon, new news showed up-and her mother’s “mystery first filly” was all but forgotten:

“Pregnant again!  Details on page 14.

“Possible names for new foal-leaked!”

“Clover Swirl-a lucky colt for some lucky parents.”

All forgotten, again.  Sure, she was still famous for all her accomplishments, but they all seemed like old news to her.  She couldn’t fulfill her own standards.  She also really, really wanted a parent to love, care for, and lean on-so she went to find her long-lost father.  Her father turned out to be the Head astronomer for the Royal Canterlot Observatory, her dream job setting.  She leveled with him, rekindled their relationship, and she forgave him for leaving her (he had apparently only dated her mother for her money, as he was barely finding enough.  The foal shocked both of them, and he threatened her to keep him out of it; feared that it would ruin his newfound reputation.).   He explained that he had sent many apology letters in his later years, and even tried to find them at some galas and events.  Each time, her mother cunningly slipped from his guilty gasp, and he eventually gave up over time.  Starry was given a job as her father’s own personal research assistant, and, for once, she felt happy and complete.

She worked very hard (and played very, very hard).  When she was seventeen, she won the prestigious Lunar Prize Award for her accomplishments and contribution to astrochemistry, stellar evolution, and infrared astronomy.  That year, she also started to approach her mother during social events, hoping to say something more than: “Hello!”.

Now, she lives in a house her father gifted her with on Solstice Heights.  She spends her time working in her new position, going to parties and social events, writing for newspapers and magazines, as a writer, as a poet, and as a daughter.  In the future, she hopes to understand more about life-her mother’s life and new family.  She hopes to also rekindle relationships between her and her mother, and her mother and her father.  She hopes to fully understand what she wants in life: Fame?  Fortune?  Love?  Family?  Friends?  But, most of all, she hope that she can learn to fully appreciate all that she has.

Character Summary:

As a social event pony-She is passive-aggressive, sarcastic, very opinionated in politics, friendly and welcoming, but very distant.  She follows all conduct of manner and the unwritten rules of the Elite Canterlot.  She is always scheming, very witty and clever, but she is generally a good event guest.

As a scientist-She is nerdy, focused, and rather cruel when it came to critiquing incorrect theories and research.  She is always detailed, factual, and punctual to work.  She is extremely passionate, and always gets very defendant whenever somepony disrespects her work.

As a writer-She is creative, curious, daring, and smart.  She loves to exaggerate and play with different styles of writing.  She is focused when writing, and will be very angry if the concentration is broken.

As a daughter-She is kind, sweet, and generally well-mannered.  She does everything in her power to keep the relationship going, even if it costs some of her reputation.  However, deep inside, she still doesn’t completely trust her parents.

Because she has so many reputations and fronts to upkeep, she has fashioned several (as listed above) versions of herself to display at different situations.  Despite being very well-rounded.  She has trouble trusting and loving others because she was deprived of both in her childhood.  Inside, she is extremely conscientious and not confident about herself.  She cares deeply about her appearance, since she cannot cast the spell on herself.  She tends to go overload with items adhering to appearance, which causes many to find her strange and eccentric at first glance (examples; her odd tattoos, her multiple piercings).  She is wild and mannered, but is very cruel and cold-despite rarely showing that side of herself.  She does whatever, whenever she wants to; and doesn’t care what others may think, or care for.  She just does what feels right in that very second.  She prefers to act rather than be, using it as a shield to hide her real self from.  She hopes to become less afraid inside and outside, and hope to, maybe someday, have a true friend (that isn’t using her, wanting an interview, as such).

Wow, that's a lot of character packed into one OC!  Blind punk high-society scientist with family issues... am I missing anything?

It's all detailed and written well; though I'm wondering if it might be a tad... unfocused?  Trying to be all things to all ponies can be tiring, and it stretches believability just a little bit.

Now that you mention it, it seems so!  Let me try to fix it..., should be done in a minute.  Thanks!

Done!  I killed the philanthropist and philosophy; merged the punk with the high-society.  The high-society kind of links to the family issues, so I can't really do anything to that.
