"Yeah," Twi watched the scenes play out in sparkling glass. They made her heart full. "Special together."

She glanced at the pegasus beside her. Did she really want to move on this? Did she really want to risk what they had? She just wasn't sure. Thought it might be too much for her to keep the secret forever. She didn't know if she was strong enough. Plus, if she didn't say anything it was almost like she was being untruthful. To herself as much as to Rainbow. She gulped. This had to be done.

"Uh Rainbow," She kept her eyes on the glass as it moved, refracting the light of the moon to play colors into the corridor. "So I wanted to ask you something." She sounded weak. She knew it. Rainbow didn't like weak. Rainbow liked strong and fast and brave. She knew they were friends and that Rainbow did like her. She wondered if she did say this if it really would ruin what they had? Perhaps it wouldn't? Perhaps they could go on being great together as friends as they always had?

"Have you ever thought about," She glance down to the stones below her hooves. Then her head moved up, connecting her deep purple eyes with the pegasus' magenta orbs. "The possibility of me and you..." Her heart was pounding a mile a minute. She was going to put Dash on the spot and she knew it. Oh, this was not a good idea...but it was too late now. "...being special together?"

Oh sweet Celestia, it was happening. Twilight could hear it in Twilight's voice. The lack of a strong floor or bass to her voice, like everything had been let go, made her sound less confident as she charted a path forward. There were a million reasons why a Princess may lose her strength but Rainbow didn't need to guess. She had already pegged it earlier and had dreaded it being brought up. But with every word that came out of Twilight's mouth, every syllable, it became clear to Rainbow Dash that her ability to outrun the unspoken question between them had stopped just short of successful. That for all of her speed and agility she couldn't outrun the nature of the bond between the two of them, no matter what form it was to take.

Then she said it. Asked it. In the way only an unusually off-her-game Twilight could put it, which was funny in its own right. She couldn't help but smile in response, Rainbow Dash looking away just as the Alicorn looked her in the eyes. She couldn't face them. It would force a certain answer out and Rainbow didn't want to be a slave to the moment. Or this moment, at least. She liked to be strong and free but she wasn't so certain she was strong enough to deny what she was feeling. Or if she even wanted to. But what was it? She couldn't say no because she didn't want to say no. She didn't feel that way. But she didn't know if this was right. If they were right as more than what they were. Twilight was going to run a nation and Rainbow was going to run the Wonderbolts someday.

There were reasons not to. She wanted to say she agreed with them but she knew they were excuses and knew that with Twilight here she couldn't lie well or for long. So Rainbow landed, her wings tucking in as she looked down at the ground pensively, her confidence all but vanished as she played with her front hooves. "Well...maybe, you know. A little."

Twilight blushed deeply when she heard the reply, her heart pounding in her chest. Had she heard correctly? Had Rainbow admitted she might feel at least sorta the way she felt? She found herself frozen in place, watching the pegasus as she fiddled with her front hooves. Twi felt light headed all of a sudden. She tried to take a deep breath and looked off towards the sparkling stained glass. The image she focused on shifted into a scene from the Crystal Empire. Of the crystal heart changing from shattered remains to a whole and unbroken heart. She remembered how it had felt to see the life blood of the empire returning to it's glory. The wave of relief that had washed over her. The thought calmed her a little.

The Princess took a step closer to her friend. She felt happy now, almost giddy actually! She tried to play it careful though. it seemed Rainbow was having trouble coming to grips with her response. She seemed as unsure are Twi had ever seen her. Less confident in that moment than possibly ever before. She understood. It wasn't easy. This whole thing wasn't something she was ready to come to grips with. But she knew what she wanted. She knew who she wanted by her side.

Twilight moved closer until the side of her body was close to Rainbow's. There was no denying the heat that flowed between them. She moved her head up close, nuzzling behind Rainbow's ear for just a moment before whispering. It felt so good to be close.

"It's ok, we can figure this out."

Rainbow wished more than anything that she shared Twilight's confidence. That she could say out loud that they'd figure it out. That she could tell herself that they could conquer any issue that came up. That these confusing feelings she had that she were banking on being romantic were something to ride to total and future success. That there was certainty? That there was a path forward that she saw without turbulence? But she couldn't say any of it because she didn't think any of it. She didn't know. She was unsure. She was worried, and truth was, she was a blustering coward when it came to matters within her own heart.

Her cockiness that was on full display whenever she was performing or training or even going about hr day to day life was something she took hold of. It gave her the courage she needed to fail in anything she tried. But the secret was, she knew deep inside that she was capable of doing it all. Flight formation, tricks, athletic stunts, getting it right in her day to day life. She knew she could do it all. The courage that came from her cockiness? It was an extra barrier, an extra layer, of protection. Without it she knew she could still do it all. More nervously, less assured, but definitely something she could handle. She knew it.

But this was totally beyond her. Getting down with a Princess? That was something entirely foreign to her. Letting her guard down around Twilight Sparkle, of all ponies? Not something she could be cocky about. Rainbow Dash had these emotions she never really thought about, emotions she could not tame, emotions she did not understand. No knowledge about what to expect. No real ability to put up that cocky barrier so she could fail without embarrassment. And a total inability to understand what was going on in her own, hammering heart. She was unsure. And when Rainbow was unsure and unable to put up a front, she knew who she would become. A coward.

And because of her cowardly nature, she didn't say what she needed to say. That she needed time to figure out what she was feeling on her own and that she wasn't entirely sure of what it was she was feeling. She wasn't honest because honesty would hurt her friend, her friend who could be something more, and being a lying coward was a whole lot easier and felt better. So she smiled weakly as Twilight came in close and felt her warmth and leaned on her and replied: "Yeah. Yeah we will."
