why is it that when we "divide by 0" a singularity opens up? if i divide zero by zero i get 0. i dont get it. i mean sure i get the part about beyond comprehension, but what!? makes no sense. answers?! preferably from starswirl the bearded seeing as he is a genius

What parker says is partially true. The actual answer is that when you divide by 0 you don't get a real answer because its impossible to get a real answer. Infinity is an abstract concept, and thus is not a real answer. Many calculators will signify this as infinity due to the fact that you cannot divide something by nothing, and thus the logical result would be the lack of division, which theoretically can move to infinity. Officially it is an undefined answer.

Think of it this way... you can divide a number by its equal and get 1. You cannot do this with zero. (there has been some mathematics fun where 0/0=2 though)

We can thrust calculators, or not. I firmly believe the obscure answer a calculating device gives, hold a core of truth, electronic calculators got their origin on analogic mechanic devices, working with their sprockets on the same natural laws all our world work on. If we don't believe 3/0 is infinite, we can get all that flashy billion decimal calculations of Pi that we got and throw them on the bin. And go back to calculate using our fingers...

I prefer to consider Infinity an irrational number like Pi but everybody knows Pi starts with 3.14, but we ignore even the first digit of Infinity, so is squirrelly to work with, any ways not ashamed of seeing good 'ol 'sideways 8' in an Algebraic Formula...

Normal people follows the norm, genius step on the norm, as a touchstone to reach new heights

You have 4 dollars and 4 friends, each friend gets a dollar. You have 4 dollars and no friends. (Oops, sorry) How many dollars do your friends get? You have a value of NULL, or an absence of even zero, in that case. That's my thought anyway.
