Movie Reviews! #1: San Andreas

Hey there! Welcome to my blog that just now started existing! I'll post in here every now and then- rambles and/or rants about stuff, maybe some stories, or reviews...which is what this first post is!

Most of these reviews will probably be of movies, because, well, I watch a lot of movies. And whenever I do, my mind just goes in all these analytical directions, and this is just me writing them down. It'll probably not be very organized like most reviewers, but hey, that's how the Lord of Chaos rolls. So here we go with San Andreas!

Oh, and if you haven't figured out already: SPOILERS

---

So I'm going to skip talking about the beginning and exposition parts here, mostly because there's not much to say. But I will talk about the characters. Because one major question hit me: why did Ray and Emma get a divorce? I guess you're supposed to assume that it was because Ray didn't know how to deal with their daughter's death because of their conversation later in the movie, but honestly, the way he was acting wasn't that bad. It wasn't like he was completely shutting her out or anything. Heck, they still seemed to be good even after their divorce. But I dunno, maybe I'm wrong. It's not like I know that much about marriage anyways. XD

Of course, this is just a minor nitpick considering that the situation of the child's death and the divorce afterward was one of the most contrived cliches to ever be in a movie. /)_-

The rest of the characters were fine. I liked Blake, though there's nothing interesting really to say about her. And Ben and Ollie? Well...OH MY GOD BRITISH CHARACTERS THAT AREN'T OVERLY FANCY.

...Bonus points movie, bonus points.

Anyway, moving onto the story, starting off with the scene where they can predict earthquakes. (Can't remember their names, but one of them dies anyways so I'm calling the other one That Guy. Mmkay.) It seems legit, but a couple problems here- 1. Timing. They saw the one in Colorado coming just seconds before it happened, but That Guy predicted the big 9.6 one a good while before it happened, at least long enough to rig into CNN and evacuate everyone. How does dat work? 2. Well... every time That Guy explains something, I got lost immediately. At least explain what's going on in a way that people can follow!

Now then, onto the quakes themselves. I can't really say much besides how awesome they looked. I've always been a sucker for great special effects, and this movie didn't disappoint. The best part had to be the moment when the camera pans out, and you see the entire ground wavering. Bring on the destruction!

One thing did bother me though- the scene where Emma was at the restaraunt and the earthquake hits. As she tries to escape and get to the roof, you just see so many background people die in so many ways. Falls to death, catches on fire, gets squished... I mean, it was one after the other, and all in a span of about two minutes! It was like being in a haunted house! This happened a lot actually, but I think it was the most obvious during that scene.

Okay, moving along a little. The tsunami. Again, bonus points because that thing looked pretty awesome, but something bothered me about it. And after some thought, I figured it out- I'm no expert (I couldn't even follow That Guy) but the San Andreas fault was over land, right? I thought quakes over water triggered tsunamis... I mean, maybe the tremors from it caused it? But still, the whole thing just seemed off.

Anyway, moving onto the climax where I totally think Blake dies and I'm about to go into a rage mode because killing off the main character is one of my biggest pet peeves....but she lives. Well okay. Sure, why not?

And then there's a pan out shot and California is a huge mess and the movie ends. Overall? It was okay. Nothing spectacular, but good. A little contrived, and some plotholes maybe, but I liked it. 7/10.

Next up- Jurassic World! Bring on the Steven Spielberg!
