Name: Grimoire

Sex: Female

Age: Young mare

Species: Unicorn

Eye color:

Grimoire has soft grey eyes.

Coat:

Her coat is a pastel mint green. The tips of her ears are black, though.

Mane/Tail:

Her mane and tail are a light grey that gradient down to black at the ends. Both are very lengthy and voluminous as well as having a natural crimp. Her mane usually falls into her face on one side.

Physique:

Grimoire is very skinny and not at all athletic. She also foregoes sleep quite often and so her eyes look rimmed in black constantly. From a distance it may pass as eyeliner, but up close it's very obvious that Grimoire is an insomniac.

Residence:

Grimoire lives in Canterlot and uses her first floor as office and shop space, though books have spilled to that level below, overflowing from the veritable library on the second floor.

Occupation:

She is a book dealer, one specializing in magical tomes or rare and old books. In contrast to a normal bookstore, her inventory leans towards the pricey side, but if she does not carry a book that a customer is after, she charges only a small fee for her to go find a copy (or two so she can keep one for herself). She calls her business Grimoire’s.

Cutie Mark:

Grimoire has a very simple cartoon rendition of a thick black book, tilted so the bottom edge of the pages can be seen along with a forked ribbon jutting down from between the pages. The cover of the book is blank.

She received her Cutie Mark relatively young when she was being taught to read by her parents. Her mother had moved away to grab a drink when Grimoire has used her magic to float one of her father's books within her reach. She can barely remember, but it was the smell of the old book that had first hit her. Plus, not only where there the somewhat familiar markings in the book that she was being taught to decipher, but the book had diagrams and shorthand as well for all sorts of things, be it from phases of the moon to potion formulas. Grimoire wasn't fascinated by magic or the possibilities, but of the actual book and the fact that so much could be written or figured out about the world and relayed in such a way as the scribbling in books.

Unique Traits:

Grimoire often has her black, lizard skin saddle bag on her in which she can store books. She’s very fond of it—it has locks and is fire-resistant.

She’s also very fond of wearing a black shirt collar as a necklace that her mother had given her years ago.

History:

Both Grimoire’s interests in books and her freedom to indulge in hording them is due to a lofty inheritance she came into. Her family is very well off, but she’s always preferred her father’s library to the socialite gatherings her mother indulged in. Her father had been a prominent researcher concerning magic, but did so to help other ponies with their own magical studies and Grimoire is more interested in hording or selling the books than using them to help or regale others. Her skill in magic is therefore mostly theoretical as she’s no more powerful or magically adept than the average unicorn. Her father was slightly let down by that, but both her parents still allow her as much freedom to their family accounts as she would like.

They retired to the countryside, having been a much older couple when they had Grimoire, and she wasted no time in quickly setting herself up with a shop to operate from. For lack of anything better, she chose to name her practice very simply as Grimoire’s. (She regrets the name immensely but feels it is too late to change it.)

She has always lived in her own world and she’s seen no reason to change that even now that Grimoire has reached adulthood. Despite her habit of freezing up in the face of casual conversation, she's convinced she is acing being a functioning adult pony.

Character Personality:

Nothing is more important than her own library, but she very much enjoys having to seek out the book requests she receives. Her work often forces her to leave her personal book horde and she acknowledges that that’s healthy. She knows she shouldn’t be a shut in, but instead of taking baby steps, she thinks she’s done as much as she’s “required” to do and is convinced her work should count as being social interactions.

Grimoire is not a very emotive pony. It is not so much that she is stoic, though she is often mistaken for that, as she is simply very shy and awkward with interaction. When the conversation has turned to books or a search for one, she can conduct herself with all the grace and confidence in the world. Grimoire would much rather she never have to say a word to anypony as when business or books are not being discussed, she flounders and her panic does not get expressed on her face. She’s not so bad as to squeal or whimper, or run away, but she will freeze up and stare. Grimoire privately wishes she would just run away instead of end up staring and internally screaming.

Actually, she has bouts of internal screaming often as she is very easily flustered when she’s left the safety of Grimoire’s—and that fact alone makes her frequently regret naming her business after herself. As aforementioned, she doesn’t show her panic or discomfort well at all.

Character Summary:

Grimoire is a very quiet and inexpressive book dealer specializing in magical or old and rare books.
