History:

Rainbow Dash was born in Cloudsdale to a pair of Weather Ponies. Her father, Rainbow Blaze, was the head of the city's premiere Weather Team. This was a position of great honor and influence as Cloudsdale's weather services were considered the best in the world and often set thee table for the weather of the rest of Equestria. From an early age she was taught just about everthing there was to know about the weather both as a matter of course in Cloudsdale education and as the daughter of the city's very best. Lofty goals as part of her being were instilled from an early age as a result.

But where those goals were placed changed when, as a small filly, her parents took her to a Wonderbolts show. Watching the dizzying speed with which they undertook awe-inspiring moves, the dazzling pace of their coordination, the sheer amazement that enveloped the sky- it was the greatest thing she had ever seen! And while plenty of little fillies and colts around her thought likewise, few of them had the pedigree or driven desire to succeed at what could be considered by most to be a fillyhood fantasy at most- joining the Wonderbolts! After all, they were all dreamers at some point, weren't they?

From then on her school work could only suffer as she was constantly focused on joining the Wonderbolts. She'd read flight manuals about tricks instead of her school assigned reading and spend her recess alone, practicing trick after trick instead of playing with others. She had a few bad crashes here and there and it was after a particularly nasty one involving two clouds, a cloud stand support, a hoofball game, and the Mayor's son that her parents decided that if she was going to be a flighty little Pegasus with such big aspirations, she might as well learn at flight camp.

She spent a significant amount of time at Flight Camp. Initially she was a bit of a troublemaker. She rarely listened and was far too intent on trying to outdo all the other fliers, often crashing in the process and earning herself some unflattering nicknames. She was so focused on whether or not she was actually capable of doing it that she never gave much thought as too how she could- so focused on being physically capable that she didn't give any consideration to learning. This would change when she got her cutie mark. She saw a few bullies picking on a filly named Fluttershy and, as much as Rainbow could be trouble for her instructors, she was not at all a fan of bullies. So she went up and defended the shy Pegasus and soon a race in her honor took place, with Dash facing off against the pair of bullies.

Rainbow had to put everything into the race to win. Every fiber of her being was spent not just trying to win, but prove herself and show those bullies that they didn't run this place! One fell out of the running quickly but Rainbow nearly lost her position thanks to the other. Her love of adrenaline and excitement though- it only got bigger and better and drove her to fly faster and faster. She blew by the other bully and just kept going. The air around her started to cone around her and in a flash a Sonic Rainboom happened, shattering all speed records and creating a legend out of myth. She earned her cutie mark immediately afterward...and she won the race, of course.

Knowing now that she COULD do it, Rainbow became much more attentive as she wanted to learn HOW to do it. She quickly became one of the top students at camp and when coupled with her amazing physical ability it should prove no shock that she finished top of her class. After she graduated from camp her father managed to get her a great gig- weather pony in a small town not far from Cloudsdale, a sleepy little hamlet with few demands on her time. It took Dash some time to come around on the idea but when she did, she did with gutso. She moved to this small town and quickly became the best weather pony it had ever seen. She quickly hired a small team that could help out during the tougher times of year and they did such a bang up job that it wasn't long before Rainbow Dash was making serious bits. Along with what her father had sent her she quickly was able to fashion herself a pretty sweet place to live.

She made many quick friends in town, finding the small town atmosphere that Ponyville was known for a pleasant change of pace from the high intensity stylings of Cloudsdale. The weather was not very demanding in the region and few calls for the weather team were reported as urgent, and what work she did have went by in a flash. This gave her a lot of time to practice her tricks or, almost as common, nap. It was during one of these trick-flying, nap-taking afternoons that she met Twilight Sparkle. And from there her life became topsy turvy in the best way possible. She has made deep lifelong friends, saved the world, and recently managed to fulfill her dream of joining the Wonderbolts! The future continues to be big and bold for Rainbow Dash, and she is excited to meet it.

Character Summary:

Rainbow Dash has the confidence of a world class athlete because she is one, even if her afternoon naps in the clouds above Ponyville could lead you to believe otherwise. She has absolute faith in herself and her abilities and is brutally headstrong, often missing the forest for the trees in her dash to always move forward. When she is comfortable there is no task in the sky that she is afraid of and when she is with her friends there is nothing that she believes she can't do- period. Her normally unflappable confidence does hide severe weaknesses of spirit when she enters unknown territory or times of strict judgement.

She is so used to training and repeating things to make them nearly unthinking extensions of herself that not being able to repeat something on command in preparation of a big event where she is relying on it, such as the Sonic Rainboom during the Best Young Fliers Competition, can cause her to be undone. Rainbow Dash after she has lost her confidence is fragile mentally and prone to extreme bouts of panic, fright, and cowardice until she can be brought back. Luckily as she has grown older and experienced greater degrees of success, this occasional flaw in her makeup has been mostly rectified. It still rears its ugly head once in a while, but on the whole, her confidence has become one of her greatest strengths.

It also helps form the basis of two other elements of her character most observers can spot quickly. She is exceptionally competitive and responds to challenges with uncommon gusto. While she is quick to crown herself the victor, she will go as far as it takes to ensure that everypony else does so as well. This has led her into a natural rivalry- ergo friendship- with fellow competitive pony and prime athlete Applejack, and it has also allowed her to participate in many fine events. She is well rounded athletically as a result and could probably succeed at any athletic endeavor she wanted to.

But the other end of that is that there is a certain air of casual laziness about her. She can often be found taking long afternoon naps and futzing about Ponyville. She is often the first to a party and last to leave- well, save Pinkie Pie in both cases- and finds time for any hobby, activity, or waiting-in-line-for-cider-style event that comes her way. This has led some to believe she is irresponsible or negligent in her role as leader of the town's Weather Team. This couldn't be further from the truth. She has time for all of those side activities plus good old fashioned naps because she is naturally gifted, well educated, and experienced when it comes to weather control. She can get a handle on the town's lazy weather patterns in the time it takes a pony to down a mug of cider and along with her team can react to emergencies effectively. Her observed laziness is really a result of her extremely effective work management and drive- why spend all day on setting up the weather for the weekend when you can get it done in fifteen minutes?

She is an effective teacher who is willing to work with just about anypony as long as they are going to give their all and try to keep up with her, which can last only so long before her need for speed in all things leaves them in the dust. Her impatience in such matters is equaled by her scholastic abilities, which leave much to be desired outside of her preferred learning environment in the sky, where her detail oriented flight instincts can be retooled to help her learn in detail and quickly. She is not by any definition a stupid pony, but her aggressiveness and directness can certainly lead some astray into this assumption. Those who have witnessed how she learns, however, are fully aware of how smart she can be.

She has become a voracious reader in recent times, even if most of it is focused on the adventure genre and more specifically on Daring Do. She was not much of a reader earlier in her life as she had preferred anything that got her moving and as she became more focused on the training and lifestyle of a world-class athlete, she viewed reading as at best a distraction and at worst a useless distraction for eggheads. In a twist one could only write about, her love of reading came when she was sidelined with a major injury, a fact she is  reticent to admit.

Here's your RP prompt, good sir!

Quote

How can you make the character unique, interesting, and expand on them beyond what we've seen in FiM? What happens after the episode ends? That is a question cast players are asked to answer. For your RP prompt, please give us a short example of the character doing what they do best. Be as creative and detailed as possible, and play them how you would in a live, opening roleplay. Be sure to finish your prompt with an opening for another character to realistically reply.

Rainbow had a favorite cloud in the sky and it was the cloud she tended to wrangle back towards her house- no, her mansion- every time it tried to scurry away towards the Everfree. It was nice. It was fluffy. It didn't break after a few hours of good napping and it was a great reading cloud. More importantly she had stuffed it so full of cirrus cloud parts that it was whispy enough to scoot around pretty quickly. It was, without a doubt, the best personalized cloud in Ponyville. It had a seat and everything. She had decided to use this cloud of clouds as the bed for her afternoon nap after a heavy morning of working for twenty minutes and then practicing the Buccaneer Blaze and the Fantastic Filly Flash. It was, without a doubt, an exhausting day of heavy work that made her wonder just when she would be able to catch some zees.

But this time, it wasn't there. "Huh?" Rainbow looked around, flying at first lazily and then with some panicked speed from spot to spot. "Where did it go?!" She half-yelled, "you here?" Poking her heads through one cloud or the other, hoping it had simply drifted off. But no. No drifting would explain what she saw, which was emptiness after emptiness filling up the spaces around her house like an invisible game of...well, whatever game it was that Twilight played that involved stacking things in tiny spaces. The claustrophobia of emptiness was the worst kind because all you wanted was to curl up and nap or read or nap-read after you had perfected the Filly Flash transition into the Buccaneer Blaze. Instead you got nothing. It was terrible.

But not as terrible as what the truth was, revealed starkly with her laser-precise vision as she saw a cloud- her cloud, seat and all. Moving. Not of its own power- was that somepony with it attached to a cart, flying away?! Somepony was taking her cloud! "HEY! WHAT- GET BACK HERE!" Rainbow bellowed, her strong wings springing to action and sending her lightning fast across the sky above town. As she did so her yell finally reached the cloud-thief, who turned with alarm and herself- or himself, or itself, or whatever you called a cloud thief- started to pick up the pace. But she wasn't faster than Rainbow Dash. And she must have known that, because within a few moments a sall black ball was tossed which exploded in front of Rainbow Dash, clogging up the sky with black clouds. Rainbow reacted with laser speed, avoiding it with a ninety degree turn, going around it, and booming towards her captured cloud.

"Give me back my cloud!"
