I feel the same way, on a semi-regular basis. That is a neat perspective you have.

Oooh, poetry. Working on poetry has been pretty hit-and-miss from my experience in school. It used to be way easier to talk about, like there was no specific right answer, but you could waffle on for a while to produce something that would get good marks. However, later on you have to start learning all these language features... you're supposed to become a language robot fuelled by coffee, that identifies the effects of semantic fields, structural choices, pervading figuration, underlying themes, implication, denotation... and so on. It becomes less about the meaning of the poem and more about choosing a type of language feature from a list that the examiner would look for and talking about it. English has always been my favourite subject, I always found it came naturally to me, but it can be the most pretentious subject too.
