So, I always feel like I have interesting stories from work. Here they are.
(*Note that I live in a small town full of hicks. I work at a video/music/book store called Hastings.)
The blog name, firstly, comes from the greeting all employees are supposed to give every single customer as they walk in. "Hi, welcome to Hastings", or something along those lines.
Every time I go to work, something happens. For one thing, the computers (or rather, registers) are old. So, they don't always work well. This is awesome, especially when it freezes when you're ringing some one up. Or when it goes to the main menu when you're trying to give the total. Or when the CHECK SCANNERS WON'T WORK. Or when foreign people come in asking about things and you try to direct them as best you can... even though they speak in broken English. Or like today, when someone calls asking about a book based on the cover. This store is a 1/3 bookstore. Do you know how many books we have? At least she knew the category...

So today at work, I was in the book section. Sometimes I work up front at the register, but today I was in books. Because I like books. I even bought books today. I get a discount on books, because I work there. I LOVE BOOKS!
I don't answer the phone at the book desk. Someone up front answers it, and then they page whoever the call is for-books, music, movies etc. So I get a call. Not unusual. I have a phone at the book desk where I can take calls, so that's where the book associate answers book calls.
So I pick up, ask how I can help them.
Firstly, for some reason this guy's voice is pretty low. I'm having trouble hearing him. Anyway, I press the phone to my ear, and try to close my other ear with my hand so I can hear him. He's going on about how he just got married, and like, his son's new aunt or something spanks her kid. And now she's going away for like a week, and wants his new wife to spank the kids. Apparently, she's spanked both her son and this guy's son. Something like that.
I tell him we have books on parenting and childcare.
He keeps going on, talking about how she pulls their underwear off too. And he's asking if like, I think that's okay. I try to remain neutral but advise him, and remind him about books. Because I'm a book associate. Not a counselor or self help line.
A customer comes to the desk. Still on the phone with this guy. I can't ignore him and help this customer, because I won't be able to hear him if *I* start talking. Anyway, eventually I was like... "I can't tell you how to raise your kids, but I can recommend books." or something of that nature. Anyway, the line started beeping, so I guess he got disconnected? I expected him to call back, but nope.
So later in the evening (ya, because THAT wasn't it!), this person (heh) asks if we have Halloween costumes. They mentioned they were going to a club or something. I showed them our limited selection (hey, we're not a costume store or Wal-Mart), and recommend they try Wal-Mart or Kmart.
I figure that's it. So I go back, and start helping a guy in the Science Fiction section. After I think I'm done with him, I go to head back to the book desk again. There's that person again. They say they want to go to a club dressed as a women... and that they aren't really a women.
    O_O
Upon first meeting, I thought they WERE a women. A little deep voiced, but heck, I've seen at least one women with a mustache so... slightly manly girls don't really phase me. They put me in the awkward position of asking if I could tell, or something like that, to which I just kind of shrugged and mumbled. HOW DO YOU ANSWER THAT?! Is it a complement if I tell them I thought they were a woman? Is it WEIRD?!
So anyway, he asked if it was obvious. I guess he was asking if it was obvious he was a guy? He said he was self conscious and he thought it was obvious. I was like..."I think you could pull it off." So he was like, "okay" and said thanks or something.
So today was a little weirder than usual. Eyup.

So I'm putting this book on a shelf, and this guy in the same isle says, "I like your hair."
I don't even know this guy, so it's random. I respond how a normal girl would, with a cheerful, "Thank you!"
    "It looks emo-ish." He replies.
So he makes this nice, smooth out-of-the-blue comment... and then calls the hair emo. Personally, I liked it, because I like to be thought of as kind of punk, but cute at the same time. Like, wear a cute outfit, have cool hair. But really, what normal girl wants to be told they have "emo-ish" hair?
I mean, he had it in the bag, and then he added on that extra comment (compliment?). I thanked him anyway. (Actually my hair IS starting to cover my eyes(s), because I want/need a haircut.)

So I was watching the Mighty Ducks intro, when I realized... there are a lot of cartoons about DUCKS.
    Duck Tales
    Darkwing Duck
    Quack Pack
    Sitting Ducks
Not to mention the bunches of other cartoons that have ducks in them and/or as main characters, but do not star an all cast of ducks.
    Here, from Wikipedia:
Ace Duck, a duck pilot in TMNT.
Ahiru, a duck transformed into a girl in the anime Princess Tutu.
Alfred J. Kwak, Dutch cartoon character
Baby Huey, a giant duckling cartoon character; no relation to Disney's Huey
Bill, Bev, Ed, Oly, Waddle, Cecil, and others from the Sitting Ducks TV series inspired by Canadian artist Michael Bedard
Count Duckula, a vampire duck originally from the British television series Dangermouse. Count Duckula later starred in a cartoon series of his own.
Deputy Duck, a duck police in Slylock Fox
Dirty Duck, one of the main characters of the animated film originally called Down and Dirty Duck, but marketed as Dirty Duck, directed by Charles Swenson and starring Mark Volman and Howard Kaylan (Flo & Eddie).
Eggy, a duckling from The Penguins of Madagascar.
Eric Tiberius Duckman, a former USA Network animated character known for his raunchy behavior and foul mouth.
Guard Duck, from Stephan Pastis' Pearls Before Swine
Irwin the Disco Duck, a cartoon character created by Peter Pan Records.
Le Quack and The Duck Brothers From Courage The Cowardly Dog
Lucky Ducky from Tom the Dancing Bug
Ming-Ming Duckling, a duck in Wonderpets.
Ms. Duck, elderly valley resident from Skunk Fu; expert at making dim sum.
Pato, from the children's cartoon Pocoyo
Quackula, from The New Adventures of Mighty Mouse and Heckle & Jeckle
Quacker from a few 1950s Tom and Jerry cartoons
    Quack-Up, a from Yogi's Space Race and Galaxy Goof-Ups
Queer Duck, a cartoon duck whose full name is Adam Seymour Duckstein
Ugly, title character in award winning animated film The Ugly Duckling and Me![1]
Wade Duck, from the US Acres segments on Garfield and Friends
Wil, a duckling who gets into trouble in the farmhouse
Yabba, a duckling in the Shaun the Sheep spinoff, Timmy Time.
    Yakky Doodle, a Hanna-Barbera character.
Mad Ducks, the main enemies of the Toucan Tecs, commanded by The Red Leader.
Duck, one of Little Bear's best friends.
Louis T. Duck, one of Charlie Chalk's friends.
    (Source: http://en.wikipedia....fictional_ducks)
But you know what people love more than ducks? CATS! And what do they love more than cats? DOGS! But randomly, here we have DUCKS. I mean, what's up with that? Name me another animal that's been as popular that isn't a common house pet. That automatically excludes cats and dogs. And turtles. Although I like turtles.
