Cutie Mark: Alexa's cutie mark is an image of two golden lances, crossed. It represents both her jousting prowess and her commitment to put herself on the line for the Empire.

Alexandrite received her cutie mark at a rather young age. As a foal, she had been a little aimless and dissatisfied. She was a happy foal, but something seemed to be missing, something important which left the young pony distraught. This all changed the first time her parents took her to the Crystal Faire. She fell in love with the faire; everything from the crafts to the sheep to the sound of the flugelhorn resonated with her beautifully. One tradition grabbed her more than anything else, however: a jousting match.

For the young filly, there was nothing more exciting than what she witnessed. Armored ponies gallantly charging in fierce competition! The speed! The athleticism! The way the crowd cheered! There was nothing more magical. Alexa left the fair that day with the widest smile on her face, repeating her account of the match to her parents ad nauseam.

Her passion for jousting grew, and for it she was mocked by some of the older foals around the empire. They called her a silly jouster fanfilly who didn't understand the first thing about the traditional Crystal Empire sport. She was just an obsessed, silly little foal. Needless to say, Alexa was offended and determined to prove them wrong. In the heat of the moment, she challenged the leader of these bullies, a colt almost twice her age to a jousting match. He accepted, giving her a week to prepare.

Alexandrite soon realized she was in over her head. Her friends tried to dissuade her from going through with the match, but even as a child she had an abundance of pride. She needed to prove that her passion for both jousting and the Empire were real and not just the passing whims of an over excited child. She studied technique rigorously and trained herself by night, determined to get to where she could win her first ever match.

The day came and the two faced off. The match unfolded predictably. Alexa's opponent made short work of her. She was embarrassed and discouraged as she was thrown off balance repeatedly by his lance as he scored points upon her. That said, through it all, never did she give up... and right as she was getting close to passing her body's limits, she made one desperate charge and actually scored a point in her favour. She lost the match terribly, and her challenger offered no kind words to her that day. Her spirit did however reach some of her peers who watched the match. Moreover, she proved to herself that she could do it, that it was in her. Her body was bruised, but her smile shone brightly, and in that moment, her mark did appear.

History: Alexandrite Tilt was born in the Crystal Empire to father Jacinth Spring, a scholar and noblestallion well regarded as an adviser to the throne and mother Citrine Rush a key member of the committee charged with planning the Crystal Faire and an accomplished flugelhorn player. Life growing up for her was happy and peaceful; she loved nothing more than exploring the Faire each year and taking part in the traditional games, crafts and food. Her experience was a cheerful and sunny one, and yet what would come to captivate her beyond else was a more physical pursuit.

From her very earliest days at the Crystal Faire, there was nothing young Alexa enjoyed more than watching the famed jousting matches unfold before her eyes. There was nothing more exciting than seeing two armored champions face each other down and collide in a show of strength and resolve. For the young filly, there was nothing more fascinating, and realizing her passion, her mother encouraged her to train. Alexa worked hard to better herself, learning the art of the joust little by little. By the time she was an older filly, she was already an accomplished jouster who had a number of Crystal Faire showings she could be proud of.

By the time she was a mare, Alexandrite had pledged herself and her lance to the Empire and been made a guard at the palace. She served proudly for a number of years, until darkness began to rise. Upon the Crystal Empire's fall to tyranny, Alexandrite joined an organized attempt to free her kind from evil, but their efforts failed and she found herself overwhelmed by darkness and negativity, until she was eventually repurposed as a tool to keep her own Empire enslaved. Only when the despot was sealed away was she freed from that fate, but like all of her kind the curse of evil set her lost adrift in time for 1000 years.

That time has since passed. Through the efforts of a strange set of outsiders, her beloved kingdom has been restored to the world, the shadow of evil seemingly destroyed and the glory of the kingdom restored. Alexa and the others are free to enjoy her first Crystal Faire in over 1000 years. The crystal mare is left a bit unease at suddenly joining this new, free era. She feels guilt about failing her kind and letting herself become corrupted, she feels unsure about how to approach this entirely new and different world and era outside the bounds of Crystal Empire. Moreover, she's just unsure about the future of the Empire... however, she remains pledged to offer her lance to ensure that her beloved home returns to the path to glory.

Character Summary: Alexandrite is a rather nationalistic pony. She has incredible pride in her Crystal Empire, and rather rigorously makes an effort to enjoy everything associated with it and its famed Crystal Faires. Crystal corn on the cob, crystal berry pie, crystal empire nectar; she eats these things whenever she can--even though she might actually like the tastes of other foods more, she just feels pride in enjoying the empire's celebrated delicacies.

Jousting is her first and biggest love. The sport means a lot to her, and simple mentions of it can provoke from her long-winded speeches about pride, honor and the storied traditions of the empire. She isn't all just talk and empty passion though; no, she is a champion jouster with a winning record to prove it. She takes matches more serious than anything else, yet, she is not a particularly bad sport. She is of the opinion that a pony never stops learning, and that one can learn as much, if not more from a loss as a win. Win or lose, jousting bring joy to her.

Alexa is also a palace guard in service of the Empire, pledged to serve and protect between her fairs and matches. Her shining loyalty makes her ideal for the job, as do her athleticism and winning spirt. She takes deep pride in this job, which is why when evil was on the rise, she did everything in her power to combat it. It's also why she feels shame for her failures to ward off the shadow of tyranny.

Alexandrite's pride sometimes can give her trouble however. She has very little trust for outsiders, and feels distanced from the world outside the empire--even more so now that its been evolving for 1000 years without her and her empire. She can come across as a bit elitist and a bit hard to approach because of this. All that said, she is in truth very curious about outside culture, she just doesn't like to let onto the fact as she feels accepting such things readily would be failing her beloved Crystal Empire.

Alexa is a generally solemn and dignified pony, but not without her cheerful and boisterous moments. She is not particularly easy to get close to, but she is highly empathic and becomes attached to others even when they might not be as attached to her. Her loyalties extend not just to her empire, but to any she feels close to, and she will willfully disregard her own safety to protect somepony else. She is a bold pony with few moments of hesitation; though sometimes this is to her detriment, as she will sometimes act before thinking things through.

Losing a jousting match does not worry her, but failure on any sort of larger scale can be crippling to her. She does not forgive anypony easily, but none is she harder on than herself. She also has a rarely seen more temperamental side that is triggered by true betrayal and evil deeds; in this state, it is impossible to reconcile with her, and a powerful destructive urge can result that can blind the usually compassionate mare to everything else around her.
