Novel's cutie mark appeared after a small writing assignment in his school years. He spent many an evening perfecting his little yarn, diligently and arduously working through the little niggles and snags of the plot, and working to create something he could be proud to call his own work. The effort paid off, as when he returned to his teacher to hand it in, she could barely speak. He had written a short story, a tale of a young colt and his gang of bold buddies, making the smallest of things into a grand adventure, overcoming the most ordinary of obstacles in the most extraordinary of fashions, and having a jolly old time about it. But as the adventures they had began to mellow out, something became very apparent, this was not an ordinary story, this was a piece of artistic brilliance. Cleverly subversive the entire time, it was actually the recollections of an ageing stallion and his glory days of youth, being blissfully related to his own grandson. Novel's teacher's eyes watered at the beautiful simplicity of it, and she asked if she could keep his story as something to remember, a Novel original. As he complied, he felt a wondrous feeling wash over him, he had just brought such strong feelings and emotions to another pony with nothing more than the written word, and it was a gift he had to share with the whole wide world of Equestria. That was the moment that his cutie mark appeared upon his flank, and a moment he shall never forget.

History: Novel was born in Fillydelphia. His home life was somewhat troubled by his family's constant moving from place to place, but was otherwise just as filled with love as any other pony's. He could never make very long-lasting friendships due to his turbulent home situation, but he enjoyed making friends with all the varied ponies he came across in his younger years, meeting all kinds of interesting fillies and colts, as well as the occasional non-pony residents of whichever particular town or city he was in. Travelling between so many places offered him something that he learned to truly treasure in his later years, a veritable oasis of bookshops, with hundreds upon hundreds of stories and sagas to choose from, setting him off on his path to becoming a writer himself. His parents are both unicorns, and both work as architects of sorts, using magic to aid in construction of buildings and other such things across Equestria. He maintains a positive relationship with them, and often alters his own travel schedule to coincide with theirs so that he can spend time with them when possible.

Novel lives alone, in a modest house in Baltimare. He travels often, usually to give perspective to something he's writing, to travel write for the local paper in his guest column or simply to escape stresses and give himself chance to wind down and relax. Studious and dedicated, he devoted years to reading the literary classics and tweaking his writing style, learning the ins and outs of the trade, adopting stylistic methods from the greats to see which elements he could make his own, burning through quill after quill, never letting his momentum drain.Using his honed talents, he applied for a journalistic position with the Baltimare newspaper team, and over time became recognised as a talented tale-weaver. Since leaving the newspaper as a full-time author in his own right, he has worked to publish a small number of novels, a few compendiums of short works, was invited back by the newspaper to do a semi-regular guest column, (which he happily accepted, owing a great deal of his success to them) and has achieved something of a 'local celebrity' status. Novel aims to become a truly prodigious author, and hopes to secure himself a spot in the annals of Equestria's cultural history.

Character Summary: Novel has an excellent command of the written word, and excels at creating compelling reading material for ponies (and other creatures) of all tastes. He is motivated by a strong passion and desire to bring enjoyment to others in this way, hoping eventually to become an icon among the literary world of Equestria, and something of a household name.

Novel enjoys reading, as one might expect, but also enjoys travelling. He strongly believes that the journey should always be just as good as the location, which is a mantra he reflects in his work. He also thoroughly adores learning about others, on a micro-scale with personal interactions, or on a much larger scale, learning about the society and history of a place or a culture.

Novel is generally somewhat reserved, due to his unstable family background, but he was raised with a sense of goodwill and integrity, always trying to do the best he can by anyone and everyone else. He has a lack of confidence which sometimes translates into difficulty in communicating, making it a tad difficult for him to properly acquaint himself with others with any semblance of speed.

Novel can sometimes struggle with verbal communication, and may fall over himself in conversation. He tends to be nervous and apprehensive when around more than a small amount of others who he isn't familiar with, and can suffer anything from timidity to stark silence in these circumstances. Novel is also prone to irritability, especially after long stints in his study. This can lead to him displaying small degrees of anti-social behaviours, and being somewhat unpleasant to others. His greatest fear is failure, and as a result, he has become something of a perfectionist with his writing, sometimes locking himself away to constantly write and re-write something. This, while exacerbating his tetchy streak, also has the benefit of leaving him immensely satisfied upon completion of a project, and leads to him being in a better state of mind for a long while after.

Hey there Novel!

This is a fine writer character. However as interesting as this character is in concept it needs some polish for World of Equestria.

Really there is only one issue with this app... it is short in the CM story and in the history. The cutie mark story especially should be a bit longer and detailed. It is the most important moment in your pony's life. Please write it so that it reflects that by adding vivid detail and emotion into the story. What sort of story was it? How did he write it? How did he feel when writing it? I'm sure you can think of a way of making it unique and interesting!

The history, really it comes down to that not seeming like a history rather than a character overview. The section should read like a minibiography. How did he grow up, what did he do with his friends, how did he hone his writing skills, how did he get his current job... These are just some questions that should be answered in your history. The more you write the better we can know your character!

If you have any questions please don't hesitate to ask!

Thanks for the review, I thought the cutie mark story might need beefing up a little, so I'll get straight on that, and I'll work out putting a little more detail into the history too.

I've made the changes you've suggested and I'm eagerly awaiting further review, hopefully it'll be just right this time, but I'm always happy to keep changing it to be the best it can be to ensure old Novel here is up to scratch.
