Drywood [Ready]

Duskfall

Recommended Posts

Roleplay Type: Canterlot Chronicles

Name: Drywood "Retardant Ray"

Sex: Male

Age: Stallion

Species: Unicorn

Eye Colour: Drywood's eyes are a steel blue.

Coat: Drywood's coat is a dark moderate orange, though most would just call it a light brown.

Mane/Tail: Drywood's mane and tail are cut very short. Drywood's tail is groomed somewhat nicely, though the ends tend to be fairly uncared for. On the other hand, Drywood's mane is almost entirely uncared for, mostly because he keeps it hidden under his beanie. At the very least he keeps it clean. His mane and tail are a strong orange (or slightly lighter brown, depending on who you ask).

Physique: Drywood is a fairly small stallion, only sizing up to the the average mare's height and build. His physical endurance runs with the same tenacity as his mouth though.

Residence: Drywood hails from Trottingham, but currently lives in Manehatten.

Occupation: Drywood works as a woodworker.

Cutie Mark: Drywood's cutie mark is a log with small stretch of white smoke in the backdrop.

In the months before his father passed away, a local carpenter took Drywood in as his apprentice, where he trained in the fine art of shaping wood into beautiful items. Drywood's father's death in a house fire motivated him to pursue fire safety. Though Drywood stayed in his woodworking apprenticeship, he began to follow in his father hoovesteps in becoming a firefighter. Nearing the end of his school days, Drywood still hadn't gotten his cutie mark. His teachers noticed his conflict in interests and told him that he would have to choose between his two interests. An offhoof and genuinely not serious comment from his friend, "Why not both?" after the conversation put a lightbulb above Drywood's head.

After declining the invitation to the Trottingham Firefighting Academy, Drywood began his final project for his woodworking apprenticeship. In honor of his father, Duskfall carved a sculpture of a campfire. His craftsmare didn't notice anything special in particular about his product, until a few seconds later she realized that the sculpture was decidedly on fire at its centre. The sculpture was enchanted, it seems, with a fire proofing spell. Drywood's family pointed out that his cutie mark had appeared after Drywood had presented his little campfire at his father's grave.

Though Drywood never was about to replicate the fire proofing spell, he was able to create a fire retardant spell. He used this spell in all of his creations when he entered woodworking professionally. His customer has come to nickname him "Retardant Ray" (named after the retardant effects as well as the fact that the spell is casted at the object as opposed to being casted on the object), and a shortwhile after, simply "Ray".

History: Drywood's family of five whittled down to four when his father, trying to save a filly from a house fire. With his mother left having to provide for the rest of the family by herself with multiple jobs, Drywood became the parent-figure in the house. While life at home was fairly uneventful and relatively normal, Drywood's school life was chaotic. Being of a smaller size and not having his cutie mark for most of his academic career, Drywood was often the subject of harassment by other children. For a time, Drywood simply ignored his harassers; he had enough to worry about as it was. However, as the harassment became more intense, Drywood found it more difficult to ignore. When his bullies pressed the final button by making a comment about his late father at the end of class one day:

"You know what? You're right. My dad wasn't a good pony by running into a house and trying to save a filly. Maybe he shouldn't have gone in and do his job. I mean, why would he have gone in, in the first place? It's not as if his goodness or duty compelled him to do it. Because the right thing to do is to is to watch, scream and panic, like any sensible pony like you or your father would."

A teacher was able to prevent the inevitable fight. From that day forward though, Drywood never seemed to be able to keep his mouth shut (or clean). This new family dynamic both brightened and soured the daily life at home. His brothers were, for the most part, enamored by Drywood's newfound confidence in his speech. The home was embittered somewhat by Drywood's unrestrained personality, but for the most part, life at home was relatively uneventful. His mom was able to get better, but still multiple jobs.

Several months after earning his cutie mark, Drywood moved to Manhatten, and opened his own woodworking shop, called Drywood's Woodshop. There Drywood made a living making and selling little fire resistant wooden trinkets. Drywood, on occasion, also freelances in carpentry. Even though Drywood's departure eased his family's finances enough for his mother to stop working multiple jobs, he still sends money back home.

Character Summary: Drywood's outburst in his school days help him realize a secondary skill: talking to no end. Frenetic and outspoken, Drywood's sole purpose in life seems to be mocking everything around him, a goal he accomplishes with ease and finesse. Some ponies like to play along with him and laugh with him; others are irritated by him to no end. If Drywood doesn't have his daily morning coffee or if somepony mentions his late father with malicious intent, Drywood becomes very quite and subdued. Some instance he becomes grim, even.

Drywood's mannerisms are blunt and unrestrained, to say the least. Along with being outspoken, Drywood has a bad habit of not being able to eat or drink anything without getting half of it all over his mouth (bonus points if he happens to be ranting about something at the same time). Drywood sometimes likes to breaks into song when the day is slow and he feels about ranting about something.

Drywood's levitation magic is very precise, and is able to move objects high a high degree of accuracy, whether it be moving a wooden piece three centimetres to the left or applying just enough force with the hammer to nail something to his tiny and precious wooden creations. His highlight magic, and the source of his nickname, lies with his fire retardant magic. Casting his magic at an object (and not on an object), Drywood is able to put items in a pseudo-stasis, where the affect item will be resistant to fire. Items affected by the spell that are still set alight burn much more slowly; items that are already set ablaze when the spell is cast will also burn more slowly.

Thank you for your patience. WoE as you know is the area where why try to replicate the spirit of the show as close as possible, which means we really can't have OCs with backstories that revolve around angst. However, we allow this sort of thing in Canterlot Chronicles; if you switch your OC's RP Type to Canterlot Chronicles, the parts about your OC's dad getting killed and the OC being bullied can remain as is. :)

I was informed otherwise, but whatever. Tis but a disappointment. I don't have the mindset for WoE anyways, but I like having the option.

Change roleplay type to CC.
