The sun was bearing down upon the company of newly recruited soldiers, standing in files of five rows of ten ponies each. The unsual summer heat was getting the best of them, wearing tan jackets and a steel helmet of a darker grey, while some remained in the Royal armor provided. The saddle bags filled with the new equipment given to them when they first arrived that morning, most had hopes of become Royal Guards, but instead found themselves in a new branch of the Equstrian armed forces.

*It had been a few months since Greed and his friends had found the realm of Equestria, they'd explored and documented many aspects of pony life, but this looked to be one of the most intriguing, if not dangerous, adventures yet. Greed had been accepted as the role of advisor to the Equestrian Armed Forces commander, and during his stay he would be studying how the military worked, and the types of ponies involved, as well as following up with the reports that his friends gave to him from inside the various aspects of the armed forces; Wrath was working with the blacksmiths, Pride was involved in documenting the tactics room, Gluttony was helping with the army chefs (whilst trying not to eat everything), and Lust, Envy and Sloth had all be taken as recruits to get an inside knowledge of the actual fighting elements of the army.*

Greed sat on the grassy knoll overlooking the gathered troops below, their fresh faces lightly flecked with perspiration from the unusual summer weather. their armour was polished to an impeccable shine, but Greed reckoned that that would soon dull down as the weeks commenced. He shifted his position slightly and tried to spot the three friends that he knew were standing somewhere in the 50 ponies that made up this branch of the military, but they were impossible to see as they too blended in with they armour they had been issued just a few days ago. It was of no matter, they would report back to him when the week was done so that he might make notes on the type of ponies commonly recruited by the EAF. 'Hmm...' He thought, 'I wonder if they've met anypony yet?'...

"Well now, Mr. Greed. As you can see, these are all the ponies I can divert from the front. I trust you have something planned? " A stallion replied to the new advisor, his pipe in mouth. " But explain to me one more time. Why do you need fifty recruits?" He still seemed puzzled about his motives.

Greed turned to the pony who had asked the question and studied him for a moment before answering, "I need this unit of ponies for reasons of study General, for the gaining of knowledge that i would otherwise be unable to possess." Greed stood and walked towards the stallion stopping less than a meter in front of his muzzle. "Do you know where i and my friends are from? Tell me, what have you heard?"...

"All I know is that you've made some very powerful friends from the Ministry, and heaven knows why they sent you to me for my recruits. General Lancer would have been a better choice for a pony such as yourself, yet you turned down his offer. I doubt you'll learn much from these Coltgrenadiers and Royal guard trainiees." Haybrun replied. Trying to avoid the skull-like mask he wore, Haybrun turned to the recruits.

"Recruits. This is our special guest Mr. Greed. He and his colleges will be examining our training today, how we differ from the rest of the Army, and more importantly from the Royal Guard Corps. As you may have already noticed, the uniforms are entirely different from the gold and steel armor for more reasonable attire such as the bucket hlemets and light fabric tan jackets." He turned back to Greed. "The armor restricts mobility and speed much needed for an attack. I'll explain more back at my command post."

Lucky Chance could not believe his luck. he thought his luck had run out when he lost that bet and had to sign on with the EAF but then he heard about a special assignment for some Egghead and that it was a cake walk, now instead o going to fight who knows what he probably would be put through a some tests and get studied by hot mare nurses for effects to his whatever. he saw the commander giving a speech to a line of recruits and other riff-raff looking to get out of the war

"Hello sir's i'm here for the new assignment erm.." he had just spotted a grey pony with a skull mask of some sort "are you the Egghea- errr Scholar doing the tests" he could see both of them looking Lucky over probably wondering why his helm had a fedora over it " Yeah i know sirs the Fedora is not regulation but its my lucky hat and i'm over 75% sure that luck is real" Lucky should know about luck and probability it was his talent after all

(it might do good to mention that Lucky is a unicorn :)).

(i just realized i forgot to describe what he looks like :S hes a Grass green unicorn with bright carrot orange hair in a over one eye style like emo style)

"Hmm you're very observant for a military type general," Greed mused, "You are correct up to a point. Me and my friends are from another realm, similar to your own yet different in many aspects. We do not have a military to speak of, let alone specialised branches or said military. Our land is ruled by an oppresive tyrant and his lackeys, we need this knowledge so that in time we can return and fight..." Greed turned away sadly, raised a hoof to massage his jawbone, and continued, "I turned down Sir Lancer's offer because we don't have the resourced for massed combat, what we need is a small specialised force, much like the recruits we will be training here for the next few months." Greed began to walk down the hill towards the front of the assembled recruits, he stopped and half turned his head back to General Haybrun, "Oh and by the by, this isn't a mask," He gestured towards his head, "Arcane powers did this, if you feel like it, when we have a moment, you may ask me about it..." And with that Greed started to tour the lines of ponies, a floating notepad following his every step...

"Are you the Egghea- errr Scholar doing the tests?" A grass green unicorn suddenly called out to Greed, who stopped and studied him intensely, paying perticular attention to his peculiar head gear. "Yeah i know sirs, the Fedora is not regulation, but its my lucky hat and i'm over 75% sure that luck is real!" "Interesting..." Greed muttered, his notepad scralled a few notes, and Greed continued walking without a another word.

"Oh don't mind him, he's just too into his study is all! You can talk to me instead!" Two new ponies now addressed Lucky, the sins of Lust and Envy...

"Very well then, perhaps some other time. As for now, I have some recruits to train." Haybrun walked alongside the new advisor, who was taking notes after the outburst from the green unicorn in the front row. As for his fedora, he didn't mind at all, just so long as it didn't get in the way. When the two reached the end of the column, Haybrun turned around and further addressed the recruits.

"For the next few months, your flanks belong to me and to go easy on you, you will conduct a five mile hike around Canterlot and the surrounding area with your full gear, and when your finished with that, you will report back here for final assembly. Tomorrow we head out west to Fort Orchard. The hike will take up most of the day, so by all means take your time, but any recruit who doesn't report here by six this afternoon will be reassigned to off line duties. Get Moving!" He shouted. The column quickly disperesed and began the long day's hike, leaving both him and Greed on the grassy knoll.

Greed watched the recruits march off for their hike, and was interested to note that they seem to gather together into groups of around 4-5, 'probably friends' He mused to himself. The notepad made a quick note of this behaviour before floating back to Greed and depositing itself inside his skull for later. Greed sighed a contented sigh, and turned his head towards Haybrun."What now General?" He asked...

Bowie wandered onto the grassy knoll, his long blond mane blowing in the breeze but kept out of his eyes by a baby blue headband. His long red cape fluttered in that same breeze as he approached the skull masked pony. "Good afternoon. My name is Bowie, I come from a distant kingdom, far removed from this plane of existence and,", as he opened his saddlebag and brought out his book on the history of his homeland, "if you read this book, you'll discover that I will be a great asset to you.". Unsheathing his sword, the blade shining brilliantly in the light, had an aura of magic about it if a unicorn concentrated on the blade. "Watch this.", he said as he raised the blade to the heavens, the peach colored earth pony uttered an incantation as the blade glowed a green crackling aura and summoned a hail of lightning bolts that struck the training grounds, setting it ablaze. "Is that satisfactory, Mr.?", he trailed off, as he hadn't gotten the skull masked pony's name.

..."Please just call me Greed." The notepad reappeared from within Greed's skull and immediately began scribbling things down at such a rapid pace that the pencil itself was just a yellow blur. "That's extremely impressive Sir Bowie, where did you learn such skills? Or can everypony here do such a feat?" If Greed had eyes they'd have been flicking back and forth from Haybrun and Bowie, awaiting an answer...

"Thank you, Mr. Greed. What you just witnessed is a divine power invested in me during my quest to seal the demon king Zeon when I recovered the Jewels of Light and Evil in my homeland. Zeon was unsealed when the Jewels were removed from the ancient shrine and I found this blade behind the inlays for the Jewels. It is called the Force Sword and it delivered the weakening blow to Zeon in our climactic final battle alongside 11 of my friends. This bought Mitula enough time to remove the Jewels from around my neck and place them back in the shrine, resealing Zeon for all time. I can also teleport out of combat and bring my entire squad with me by using this," as he pulled a feather made of gold, encrusted with jewels out of his pocket. With a smile, he sheathed his sword and put the feather back into his pocket. He handed the book to Greed, "I hope this makes my story more believable if you disbelieve it.", he said with a laugh.

(OoC: Look up Shining Force II as that is what the book contains)

Greed took the book and carefully placed it inside the brown leather satchel that was strapped to his side, "Thank you for the gift, I shall enjoy reading through that later when there is time." He quickly closed and reapplied the brass lock on the satchel, almost as if he didn't wish for anyone to see what was contained within. Then he addressed Bowie once more, "But we have not introduced ourselves formally, this is Haybrun, the General i am currently attached to as advisor, is there anything you wish to know Sir Bowie?"...

"Greetings General Haybrun. I would like to offer my services to you or at least join forces as I may be a stranger to this world and it's denizens, but I am a proven hero with many victories in combat, many with little to no casualties on my side. I brought total annihilation to my enemies, but I never denied an enemy the chance to negotiate a parley. Plus, with this sword and my powers, I will greatly increase the effectiveness of your troops and be a beacon of inspiration for the greener soldiers.", he said with a smile as he pointed at the scared recruits running around the flaming training grounds. "YOU LOT DOWN THERE!! STOP RUNNING AROUND IN A PANIC AND PUT OUT THE FIRE!!!!", he shouted in a voice of total authority and power. Turning back towards the general and his advisor, he said with a sheepish grin, "Sorry about that. When I see disorganized units running around aimlessly, I tend to lose my cool.".

Well well well ... thought Lucky. must be my lucky day he saw two mare one a downcast looking green one and the other a perky looking pink one, he was about to go say hello to the two mares but he was told to stay in line or it was the stockade for him. there's a time and place for everything Lucky Thought to himself as he waved at the mares and winked. he was not really paying much attention until some strange pony in a red cape and sword conjured some freaky magic up and set fire to the the training field "Holy Mother of Celestia!" Lucky yelled when the flames licked his hooves. then he heard the pony yell at them to stop acting scared and clean up.

"There's A LITTLE thing called helping ya know, Maybe you should learn about it!" if there was one thing Lucky could not stand it was powerful jerks that thought they could get away with anything. "Or How about i teach ya"

Haybrun simply placed his hoof over his face. 'I fought for half my life for this country and this is what I get? A advisor with a skull for a head, a sudden fire in the camp, and a short tempered wanna-be. Can this get any worse?" He thought to himself. He wish just got answered as a sudden explosion came from the field kitchen.

Greed, being used to such disaster, waited to see how Haybrun would deal with this latest interruption...

Meanwhile,"Opsie, a little too much nitro glycerine?" Gluttony, a brown and white striped mare with an inexhaustable supply of sweets, asked the cook, "There's not suppost to be ANY AT ALL!!!" He shouted back, before leaving to cool his temper and his hat which was still slightly burning. Gluttony just ignored him, what did it matter really, following the recipe was just plain boring, and besides nopony was hurt, just a little blackened. "Huh, well it tasted fine to me!" She half heartedly replied. 'Maybe i need to reverse step two...' She mused, producing another lollipop from her belt...

As he followed Haybrun, Greed also studied him closely. He was certainly an interesting pony, proud, powerful, yet also perhaps a little impatient. He didn't seem to appreciate the situation surround The Sins' appearance, but Greed was thankful that Haybrun had accepted them none the less. Greed hoped that when they returned to the command tent, he could have a proper conversation with Haybrun, as he was sure there'd be plenty of interesting things to note down and later archive. For now though Greed was happy to just follow Haybrun to whatever the larger stallion thought needed his attention the most, after all that in itself would be one of the keys to analysing what made Haybrun's mind tick...

Bowie sighed and replied, "I better leave...". He galloped off as he opened his saddlebag, retrieving a strange lamp from his bag and raised it to the sky. A gentle rain fell upon the burning camp, putting out the fires and healing the wounded. It's purpose fulfilled, the lamp shattered into dust.

"Well now that's better" Lucky said maybe he was not such a bad pony after all "Thanks!" he called to the caped pony as he galloped off to help those who were hurt in the fire. before he did though his curiosity was getting the better of him he decided to investigate why the kitchen had exploded as he poked his head in the door to see the cook nowhere in sight and a mare with a cutie mark of a candy in a wrapper. stirring a pot of something with what looked to be a lollipop. now he had to know what was going on, he decided to say hello.

"Hello miss i heard a explosion from here, might i ask your name? was that your doing?" not that he cared if she did it or not he was just looking for an excuse to get a mares name for once

Gluttony jumped as a voice she didn't recognise addressed her, "Hello miss i heard a explosion from here, might i ask your name? Was that your doing?" Turning rapidly she saw a Green pony with orange hair and a Fedora standing in the remains of the tent doorway. She blinked a few times before finding the courage to speak,, "Erm, hello...yes, my name is explosion and that Gluttony was my fault...i mean...oh sugar rush.." She looked away feeling her cheeks turning red, she really wasn't good with this whole talking to other ponies thing...

Lucky just chuckled as he watched the mare stumble over her own words, the easily flustered type he guessed. he decided to be nice though "well miss gluttony was it?" strange name he thought to himself although some would say his own name was strange so he decided not to ask about it. "The names Lucky Chance and there is no need to be all shy like that, just treat my like you would anypony else" he decided to see what she was cooking levataiting a spoon he said "You don't mind if i try what your cooking right?" dipping a small bit out he took a sip and gasped and coughed as he saw what he thought was a bit of smoke escape his lips "Spicy" his eyes watering slightly as he smiled "not bad" he said trying not to offend

'Haybrun's Log

'I've never expected a first day quite like this...ever. I'm quite suprised about our 'guests' who chose my area of expertise instead of the Royal Guard Corps, invited or otherwise.' Haybrun wrote in a journal inside the command tent. He heard a little bit of rain, but the sky was cleared this morning by the local weather team. Before he could have a chance to continue, Greed entered the tent. Haybrun still felt uncomfortable about the skull head of his, but he had seen far worse during the Griffon Wars and the Dog Crusades.

"You wanted to discuss something, now that I've taking some stress reducers." He gestured Greed to the chair nearby the desk.
