Character History:

The long-lived species of phoenix have witnessed the destruction of Equestria three times. They have learned so much by living so long that it is thought they possess the knowledge of every age.

There are many tomes in Canterlot which mention the symbols of heaven and earth. None which speak in more detail, none more famous than the Shahname Book of Princesses. The pages of Shahname told of a pale unicorn, lost near the precipice of Tartarus. The foal's lonely cries were heard by the tender-hearted Simurgh, who lived on the eastern side of its peaks. She gathered the foal in her copper feathers and carried him to a lower peak, keeping him as her own. Zeal was showered with love and wisdom that she shared with three of her other nestlings. The four flourished under her wings. But as her children left one by one, Simurgh's heart was filled with pain. She knew that the young colt would be a stallion soon and that he would wish to return to his kind. So, Simurgh gently prodded Zeal with her last gift.

The cry of a phoenix whether anguished or joyful is as beautiful as a song. The continuous melody echoed after Zeal's steps for three days. As soon as it became silent he took one more look at the three golden feathers he should burn should he ever need her help.

Upon returning to his kind, Zeal fell in love with a beautiful filly named Fervor. But one day she fell mysteriously ill. Each passing week, she fell deeper into sleep, unable to eat anything. Everypony was certain she would never wake. In desperation, Zeal burned one of the feathers, bringing forth Simurgh in a pyre of gold.

She immediately fled to Avestan, a beautiful rose bush that stands in the middle of the world sea Vourukhasa, so named by the firebirds. There she collected the leaves and blooms of its fallen branches and brought them to Zeal. Under her instruction, Fervor was awakened with an elixir that could cure what magic couldn't. It was said that soon after, because of Zeal's devotion to Fervor, that the two remaining feathers emblazoned themselves to his flank. It became a herald for the trust between pony and phoenix, a marker for friendship that would test the end of times.

Nothing has changed about the phoenix in the past three ages. Except that there are perhaps a few more of their numbers sequestered in isolated mountains across Equestria. They still enjoy peace and quiet, roosting at the highest peaks, feeling superior to other birds, adorning their nests with frankincense and myrrh and taking baths in mica.

As has been suspected by many a pony, Phoenix magic is limited to the properties of fire. Mostly, casting light to deter or confuse any threat. If angered, even insulted, one could get burned, but only if the bird comes in contact with its poor agressor. While fearless and immortal they can still be injured and fall ill, and if not cared for pass on. So their magic is utilized as a defense for escape.

Sirocco is a rather proud phoenix. As a young nestling he left to find a home for himself. And being a rather proud phoenix, he left to find the tallest home he could find. All phoenix know there are peaks across the world sea but it has been many passing eras since they've needed to make the migration south. Equestria wasn't always stable with pony magic so it was custom to cross the ocean to ever fair Avestan and provide a warm, quiet place for their hatchlings.
