Well, some games start off at night so that someone dies. But I don't like doing that cause that means someone doesn't get to play. The best way to start is just to get some discussion going. You can throw around random accusations to see how people react. Really, you can talk about whatever you want to get discussion going. The days last for as long as the players want, so you guys can talk as much or as little as you want!

I sent out all PMs. If you didn't receive your's, let me know and I'll fix that. As the sun dawns over the small town of Ponyville, a loud bell begins to chime. The citizens emerge from their homes, confused, and make their way to the town center, where the mayor stands ready to make a very important announcement. ~~~ The mayor waited patiently until all of the ponies had arrived. She looked out at her fellow ponies and began to speak. “Is everypony here? I have urgent news! Last night, one of our very own was ponynapped right out of her home! The culprit was captured, but not before our dear friend vanished into the night. The culprit was found to be a Changeling, and he no doubt has allies nearby. We must not allow these horrible creatures to take our town!” The citizens of Ponyville were stunned. A Changeling? In Ponyville? Preposterous! The crowd began to whisper to each other, but one voice rose above the rest. “Mayor? Who was captured? Who did they take?” The mayor paused, and waited for everypony to quiet down. “They took.... Derpy Hooves.” Day 1 Start!

It's more like how you would play a board game. You are basically just talking to everyone and trying to figure out who the mafia are, unless you are mafia, in which case you try to deceive everyone else into thinking you are town. You aren't any special character; you're given an alignment and your job is to do all you can to help your side win. For example, you could ask something like... So, hobbes574, what do you think about Player 1? They said this earlier, and I find it suspicious. Or, if someone is asking you about a player, you could say something like... Well, hobbes574 did say this, which seems to contradict what he said there, but I'm not sure that he's actually a mafia or if that was just a mistake. If that's not clear, let me know and I'll see if I can't explain it better.

A player must receive over 50% of the votes in order to be arrested and placed in jail (ie: with 10 votes, at least 6 are needed for an arrest). Not at all. I want to get the game started, but I don't expect everyone to post right away. I know that people have work, or are in school, or whatever. The days in the game can easily last for multiple real days anyway. This goes for everyone; if something comes up and you might not be active for a bit, please let me know (posting in the game thread is fine). That's just so we know what's going on and so I don't have to debate over whether or not I need to modkill you. Also, more active players means more fun, so if you can't contribute, I might need to do something about it to keep the game fun for everyone. I'm going to let the players set the pace of the game, and I'll use that to determine activity. I won't modkill anyone for being gone without giving them plenty of notice (probably 48 hours, but again, it'll be based on the pace of the game. No less than 24 hours though) beforehand.

Since we've gotten a good number of people signed up, I'm going to go ahead and move up the deadline so we can get the game started! I'll close sign ups at noon tomorrow, May 19th (11 am PST, 2 pm EST). That leaves a bit over 14 hours left for people to join. I'm glad people are interested! I'm going to keep the thread open for another day or two to hopefully get more people so we can have a decently sized game. Also, if anyone is interested but unsure if they want to participate or some other reason, feel free to sign up as a back-up player. I hope we won't need one, but if someone has to drop out of the game for some reason and they have an important role, it's nice to have someone fill in the gap rather than just losing that role for the whole game.

So, I checked around for a Mafia game on the site, and it looks like the last attempt didn't work out. But, that was over a year ago and I figure the time is ripe for another try! If we get enough players who like the game, hopefully we can make this a regular thing. If you are new to the game, please read through this whole post. It is large, but once you get started, the game can be a ton of fun! If you've played before and are interested, you can skip to the bottom and add your name to the sign-up list. This will be a mostly vanilla game, but it will have a pony theme rather than the traditional Mafia theme. Feel free to ask questions or share suggestions! Mafia is a classic party game. Each player is given a role and a team, and it is their job to ensure that their team wins. The two most common teams are Ponies (Townsfolk) and Changelings (Mafia). The game has two phases; Day and Night. During the Day phase, the Ponies will try to figure out which players are Changelings, while the Changelings will do their best to mislead the town. By the end of the day, the town will reach a consensus (majority vote) on who to arrest, and the selected player will be placed in jail (removed from the game). During the Night phase, the Changelings will talk amongst themselves via PM and select one person to kidnap (remove from the game). When a player has been removed from the game, they can no longer post in the game thread until the game has ended. Note: As this is a vanilla game, there will be no other factions or power roles beyond what is listed in this post. Win conditions: - The Pony faction wins when all Changelings have been captured. - The Changeling faction wins when they make up half or more of the remaining players. Typical Roles: Sheriff - Part of the Pony Faction - At night, you select one player to investigate by sending a PM to the game moderator. If the mod replies “guilty” then that person is a Changeling.
