  1. So on a lot lower tech level, I've been doing a lot of research lately on historic metallurgy. Being from the States I'm used to Farenheit. But most of the metallurgy liturature is in Centigrade. Anyone have any experience switching over their thought processes? Wondering how to get to a point where I'm not trying to do conversions in my head.

  2. There are always trade offs with energy exchange. I read not too long ago that our current gas engines are only about 20% efficient, diesels are a bit better, but they have a bit slower response curve. There was a time when they experimented with Stirling engines in cars which can approach 50% efficiency but they are larger and had to be warmed up before use. People want instant action from a car so they were a failed experiment.

Fusion, if we pull it off, will likely never (in a timeline that matters to us personally) be compact enough for anything but powerplants. And I seriously doubt that it would be an on/off switchable reaction like an auto would require.

Now build me an Arc reactor and woo-hoo!

  3. Well, in "Party of One" Pinkie turns a duller color as well. Maybe losing their brightness is a natural side effect of despair for ponies.

Pinkie Pie "discorded." Pinkie Pie in "Po1" Almost the same color. It makes me wonder more why her hair didn't straighten out when Discord got her.

Did.... Did I.just see..... A pony..... Dressed as SCORPIAN FROM MORTAL KOMBAT!?!?!?

Perhaps this should be a random pony discuss thread.....

    Yup!

  4. I think one thing would make all the difference in the world: would the goal be to make a good show first, and hope it draws fans, or be an attempt to make something "popular."

FiM wasn't made to have a broad appeal out the gate, it was made to be a better show for girls than what they had been offered. It happened, due to organic chemistry of social climate and everything else, drawing a wider audience.

If they try to re-imagine care Bears with the thought, "Let's try to make a show that will catch not only little girls (or just kids) but these adult viewers as well," I hazard a guess that it won't have the same magic. There would be a forced feel to it that MLP: FiM hasn't had so far, and I hope never does.

Don't try to make something that will sell, just try to make something awesome, because you think people deserve awesome things.

  5. While I have serious doubts, I won't say it's impossible.

I watched "Clarissa Explains it All" and "Sabrina the Teenage Witch" (yes, I had a thing for Melissa Joan Hart) And the Sabrina tTW animated series. So MLP: FiM isn't my first out of target audience experience.

Who Knows what will catch my attention next. :smirk:

  6. Well to be fair, RD's meat is the easiest to find. I mean after all... we all know what Pinkie did to her.

Edit: And if you don't, you are probably better off not knowing...

I've never read that, but I did read the basic synopsis. Just that gave me a sad.

And that was the first thing to pop in my head after seeing the clip.

  7. I would certainly hope to be a unicorn. Magic would certainly be appealing and I like research as well. Especially history.

But considering how earthy some of my pursuits are I would expect to be an earth pony.

Raised on a farm, live in a rural community, into blacksmithing. Unless it would take a unicorn to swing the hammer, although the Apple family seems to get by without magic just fine....

  8. So today I was one of a small handful made to work for ridiculous reasons. But as it ended up I was one of a small number in a million sq ft building. So I spent all day rewatching Season 1 episodes. It's amazing how many great moments I had forgotten about!

The two biggest things that hit me on a second run through- In S1 E 21 "Over a Barrel" Twilight says "anybody" It's amazing how after over 6 hours of non-stop Ponies that REALLY stood out. I mean it sounded alien to hear body instead of pony after all that!

And it really didn't hit me just how scary Pinky Pie was in "Party of One" the first time through. It was really disconcerting.

Anypony else have moments like that to share? :smirk:

  9. For me Love is in Bloom and This Day Aria are neck and neck. I like the positive upbeat feel of Bloom, though I have to admit I think Aria is probably musically superior.

Edit to throw in another bit: When listening to the songs on Youtube I always prefer the original animation with them (discounting remixes). Anypony else?

  10. I kept seeing them pop up on Memebase. Got curious and watched Episode 1. Thought, "Ok, what's the fuss about?" Got bored working night shift one time and watched a few more. By the end of the night I was hooked. Then "My Little Brony got its own section and I went squee.

  11. One amusing theory is that FiM takes place After The End and Equestria is a Scavenger World so some human tech survived and has been adapted/reverse-engineered while other has not.

Oooo I like that. thinking that the ponies are what replaces us after we nuke ourselves to oblivion is actually kinda optimistic. Beats the horrors from the deep you usually think of. And it looks like they are doing better than we are most of the time.

  12. Isn't the axiom that sufficiently advance technology is indistinguishable from magic?

And of course we have the corollary: Sufficiently advanced magic is indistinguishable from technology.

The short answer is, of course, that they have whatever they need for the plot of a given episode to work.

Incidentally I found this on here so I may read it and get more ideas.

But I agree with the differing desires/needs of Equestria over humans. Not everypony needs gizmos to feel complete or happy. We seem to think we do.

And there seems to be a lot of regional flavor to it as well. When AJ ran away it was very "old west." Manehatten, however seems very early 20th century.
