  1. Yeah, I commented on that in my appraisal. It just felt like they were forcing the situation so Fluttershy would be Discord's sole supporter.
  2. Yer kidding, right? I honestly found Battletoads far FAR easier than Super Ghouls n' Ghosts.
  3. I was pleasantly surprised. This episode was adorable. In a "Oh he gets to huggle Fluttershy now I'm jealous!" kinda way. But it wasn't without its flaws. My biggest issue is what I call "Rescue Rangers Syndrome." For those not old enough to remember that cartoon: Chip n' Dale's Rescue Rangers used to have this recurring formula where each episode would revolve around one of the Rangers' personal issue (Zipper feeling worthless, Gadget wondering if her inventions suck, etc), and, just to drive the point home, the other rangers would all the sudden become one-dimensional jerks who do nothing but make thoughtless comments just to make the one Focus Ranger angst even more. It was a rather annoying part of an otherwise great cartoon. Same deal here. Fluttershy wanted to give Discord an honest chance, but the other ponies did nothing except countermand her and all but insult her to her face for her determination. It seriously almost felt out-of-character for some of them--I would expect Pinkie Pie at least to be helpful, or perhaps even Twilight to be thoughtful and try to help, instead of instantly looking for a Reforming Spell (which, yes, that also parsed to me as a straight-up mind control spell). What is it about season three? First they make Babs Seed actually cute, and now they take Discord (who I hated when he first appeared) and made him rather likable. What's next, Chrysalis becoming cuddly?
  4. Wishful thinking: The CMC will finally get their cutie marks.
  5. I don't really care for Final Fantasy as a series, but Final Fantasy I, IV and VI are nostalgic classics for me and still some of my favorite RPGs of all time, up there with Secret of Mana, Chrono Trigger and Earthbound. My biggest bias by far is that I tend to prefer games made in either the 8- or 16-Bit era to anything else. When you go back to things like the Atari 2600, those games are just too simple for me to enjoy, while I find the 32- and 64-Bit era was where gaming started taking on a lot of bad tendencies that only got worse as time went on (RPGs in particular went from being one of my favorite genres to being games I just couldn't stand, with rare exceptions such as the Lunar remakes, Grandia, and the few MegaTen games I've played). For some reason I tend to also favour underdog consoles. Tell me there was an awesome game on the SNES, I'll believe you but probably won't be motivated to seek it out. Tell me about an awesome game on the Sega CD, though... (and yes, despite what a certain Angry Nerd says, there were tons of awesome games for the Sega CD).
  6. I'm almost in the same boat as the OP. I still watch new episodes, but its really the fandom and having friends who are fans that keeps me coming back.
  7. Haven't gotten the DVDs yet... what's everyone saying about the cover on Disc 3? (I'm imagining they put Derpy or someone on the cover)
  8. See, I see this argument a lot but... it's not convincing. In the documentaries for the 1983 series He-Man and the Masters of the Universe, the writers, artists etc. all talk about how, since the show was animated domestically, they could actually add ideas during the storyboard or even the animation stages--the people in those departments were in the same building, after all. So it was very much possible for an episode to have a scene, a dialogue or whatever that was not in the script. Why am I talking about a decades-old cartoon in an MLP topic? Because MLP:FIM is also animated domestically, and they could easily toss in ideas later in the production line. Granted, it's far-fetched to say "Trixie is pandering" if they were already going to do it, but little things like the parasprites or the mention of the rock-farm could easily have been late additions anytime before voicework began.
  9. Once I have spare change, I shall have to add this to my collection.
  10. Okay, so a friend of mine who really liked this episode finally convinced me to watch it. I told him I would only do it , and he held up his end of the bargain, so...Anyway... despite my initial misgivings, Babs actually didn't bother me as much as I expected. In fact there was one scene where I thought she was cute (the "I can't feel my tongue" scene). And "cute" pretty much defines this episode. Of course Applejack and Apple Bloom are just naturally adorable, I found myself wanting to hug half the Apple family (even Granny Smith), and... One, two, three, four, raise the barn.... That's honestly the best song this season. And I actually have to take my hats off to the team for making it in the style of a square dance (it honestly surprises me that anyone remembers what those are, these days, and it fits Applejack and her whole western country motif so well). All in all, I give the episode a 7/10. There were parts that coulda been better, but... not very many.
  11. Here's what I think will happen. Eventually, Rarity will come to love Spike as he loves her. Yet it will come too late, for Spike will have moved on. Shamefaced at feeling like he's lead on an innocent filly, he will run away, change his name to Coryoon and fall in love with a human princess who will erase all his memories of his former love. And he will save the princess from evil. And it will command ridiculous prices on eBay. On a more serious note, he'll probably get over her eventually. Oh, and her babies would totally be pegasi with dragon wings who can breath fire.
  12. Just posting here to advertise my latest (kinda) fanfic, "If, Wherever We Go." This is actually something I started a long time ago and shelved, but I felt it deserved to be shown, even though I might not ever finish it. I did post early drafts on other forums in the past, so its just possible one or two of you already have heard of this one. Here's the fimfiction link: http://www.fimfiction.net/story/73994/if-wherever-we-go And yes, in my headcanon, "Luna Selena Delicatessen Cosmos Equestrios" is her full name. Never came up with one for Celestia.
  13. Sigh... It feels like this is the entirely wrong time to post this, but... this is the first episode I didn't finish watching. I liked it at first. Baby Applejack, Spike is a click-lighter, all the party preparations, the quilt, so many things resonated with promise. And then they bring back Barbara Seed. And not just bring her back, but shove it down our throats that her and AB are now favorite cousins who all-but-smooch each other on sight and want to talk about what they've been doing and DEAR LUNA MAKE IT STOP. I checked ahead in the video, and when I saw Babs was still there... no. I don't want to put up with another episode full of her. It's not just the character that's a problem, its that she's a walking reminder of "One Bad Apple," an episode I would just as soon pretend never happened. It's like if you have a bad breakup, and then your life is finally going well, but then your ex-flame comes to your wedding. Okay, that made no sense, but I'm not in the business of making sense right now. *Sigh* I'm gonna try again later on, but I had to vent before I finish this episode.
  14. Ahh, dear Pinkie... much like a mystery novel, she becomes much clearer once she's explained everything.
  15. I disagree. A villain who is more of a presence than a driving force can work--see Sauron, as was discussed when the episode first aired. Personally I feel Sombra is better because of his more "ominous presence" role rather than if he were another doofus with a clever plan. At least he can't be as pathetic as Discord. Again I disagree, because what "children's television has been doing forever" is letting evil villains stay evil, not find true redemption. How many times does Starscream join the Autobots and actually stay with them? How many times does Skeletor become a Master of the Universe? It never happens, because in american animation, its always "good is good, evil is evil, and a leopard can't change its spots." Personally I was afraid from the beginning that MLP would take this same approach and decide that all evil is absolute, and I was actually relieved and glad that forgiveness exists in this universe. And for the last time, I disagree--to me season two has been the weakest of the seasons so far.
  16. It can be bad because most of us don't watch it for memes, we watch it for fun and escapism. I for one like to believe that Equestria is a real world that might be out there, somewhere, and when I watch the show I like to believe I see things that did or could actually happen there. If there's something inserted that's clearly a reference to something outside the show itself, then suddenly I'm reminded of that thing, and then I'm not "escaping" to the world of Equestria anymore--its pulled me back into the real world by reminding me that it is a cartoon. Not to mention, internet memes tend to be pretty shallow, while well-constructed universes tend to be deep and involving, so there's an obvious clash. That being said, the only episode I saw recently that felt like it had "pandering" was The Magic Duel, and none of it was anything that drew me out of the universe. To be honest, episodes like "Mare do Well" which blatantly change the technology level of Equestria, or marketing gimmicks like the Friendship Express, bother me FAR more than pandering does.
  17. Pandering means basically putting stuff in the show just so the bronies will squee. There were a lot of complaints about that in season two as well. I can see where its coming from, but I don't see how it detracts from the show. On the whole, Season Three has been a definite step up from Season Two.
  18. This may just be sour grapes on my part, but I'm starting to dislike shipping. It feels like sometimes, that's all that matters to people. Like when I go to Fimfiction and see what fics are getting front-paged, it seems like most of them are ship-fics. And indeed, until just recently the title banner always showed two ponies lovingly hugging each other/giving each other the eyes/etc.
  19. I don't think Spitfire changed personalities. I think she just acts different when she's off-duty. A lot of real drill sergeants are like that. You NEED to act like that in situations like hers. And Thoth, don't feel bad. Every episode seems to have some brony out there who is "the only guy who hates this episode." (for example, I seem to be the only person willing to criticize "The Return of Harmony" and "One Bad Apple.")
  20. Just bumping this to say: The latest Surprise Days story--"Scene 7: Walking a Tightrope" is pretty much finished. I'm just wanting some reviews and comments before I post it on Fimfiction. The drafts are on Google Docs if anyone here wants to take a look. Here's the links: Part One Part Two You can comment either in the document or in this topic. Thank you all in advance.
  21. I actually rather liked "Drill Sergeant" Spitfire. She's... somehow more likable that way. Only part I didn't dig was the Pinkie subplot, but it had a good payoff. Seriously, this episode (and "Magic Duel") both feel like they could've been part of season one. Coming from me, that's high praise.
