Cutie Mark Story:
During the time he was training with his mother to become better at flying they setup courses for him to fly through. They required him to be agile and concentrated and it was always a goal to be as fast as possible. Once they run out of ideas they went for something more challenging.

Quite a distance from Cloudsdale are mountains. Those mountains contain a canyon or better said a passage the size of a canyon. Due to its many curves it is always the better option to fly around the mountains in terms of distance - besides that, the passage is dangerous due to fast, quickly changing wind, wild growth and sharp edges that you will eventually come across when flying through it.

His mother accompanied him when Wind Shear flew through it. It took them nearly five days and today he would laugh at how proud he was about that time, considering he could do it in less than half the time and even less trained pegasi don't need that long. Nevertheless it was an outstanding success for him, because on this day he earned his cutie mark. One of speed and agility.

History:

Parents:

Wind Shear's parents were two very different pegasi.

His mother a comperatively interesting mare. She studied flying but grew bored by the lack of actual flying and thus, after finishing her studies, she joined the Wonderbolt Academy. Nearly everypony was younger than she was but still she could easily excel with her knowledge about flying. After getting accepted she worked for the Wonderbolts a few years. Having enough bits and no desire to spend them she quit fairly early though - to the disappointment of her colleagues. A slight depression was making it difficult for her to focus on flying. What she needed was someone to understand her and be with her.

His father was on the contrary a pony you would consider boring. Not only did he never excel at anything, but he also never even attempted to do something outstanding. On the flipside he was a very nice character, capable of understanding everypony, however complicated they were. He could give comfort where others couldn't. Sadly for him, this talent got him nowhere in life and often he had trouble getting the bits together for a meal.

After they first met in the Sky Bar in Cloudsdale, they fell in love quickly. His mother finally found someone who can give her comfort and who she can talk to about everything while his father found a successful mare who appreciated his talent and loved him like he was.

Shortly after she rejoined the Wonderbolts to fly for them the last years of the eight years of service, which she is allowed to stay.
(Took that from brians lore)

Before his time as teacher:

Even though it is hard for him to remember his days as a young colt, there are a few things and stories that still are lively memories in his mind.

While visiting the school he saw one of his friends who was a bit older than him fly around. This was odd, since he couldn't fly the day before that, at least not consistently. First jealous, later sad, he didn't tell his parents about how he felt, but he also knew he wouldn't give up trying to fly until he could. During the next weeks he spend more time training his wings and trying to fly than time on school or with friends.

It surely took some time, but eventually the first moments of success were making him smile. All the hard work was worth it, he was not only the first in his class who could fly, but also a child that made his parents very proud. From now on he could visit any place in Cloudsdale and the ground by himself and didn't have to ask his parents or another pegasus anymore.

Flight School was a rather boring place for him. The teachers didn't understand how to take care of his talent or didn't care. Once or twice a teacher came to him and asked if he wanted to fly races or join the Wonderbolts some day since he seemed like a good student, but despite his enthusiasm to do everything for it he was never given the chance to improve past what the school had planned.

Nevertheless he trained on his own and eventually asked his parents for help. His father quickly understood his desire to fly fast and already knew his cutie mark and life will be centered around that - unfortunetaly he was everything but a good flyer himself. His mother on the other hand was an expert on flying. Her experience with the Wonderbolts and her studies on flying were now giving Wind Shear the opportunity to become better and better. He trained hard, every single day, with or without his mother and eventually he got his cutie mark.

The next chapter of his life started when he started realizing that acrobatic flying entertainment is not what he wanted to do, despite his mother's attempts to get him in one. He wanted to race other ponies, show that he is the best and only he.

This attitude should get him into some trouble but gladly he didn't know yet; for now it was helping him focusing on training further and keeping up the efforts to be faster and more agile than everypony else.

After leaving flight school he got promoted for racing. After all someone had to find this talent right? This was exactly what he wanted. Tracks with and without obstacles, getting from the start to finish faster than anypony. Unsurprisingly he won a lot of his races. He had the best education and training he could imagine and was never okay with losing.

Quickly he had fans, became famous and somewhat rich. Becoming an idol wasn't his goal, but now, after becoming one, he loved it and enjoyed being the middle of attention at nearly every occassion. His parents were old by now, but proud. His mother often had a few tears in her eyes when he came back successful from a race. The gaze of his father though turned more and more sceptical though - he feared all this glory and attention is making him a bad person, but Wind Shear denied that it affected him.

At one race he got hurt quite badly when some other participant caused several pegasi to crash into him, that's how he lost a part of his left ear. Not mainly but partially caused by this incident he took a break from racing for a few years. At some point he attempted to pass through the canyon of his youth again, but this time with an audience. After passing it in a time of barely two days he got honored by naming the passage after him - the Wind Shear Passage.

Back at racing he felt that he wasn't the youngest stallion anymore and new competitors have appeared, young eager ones, just like himself a few years back. Fortunetaly for his ego he still could win his first few races, but he also had made himself a rival who now trained as hard as he did. Wind Shear feared nothing more than losing to this young stallion, it would probably mean the end of his fame. The next race they were going to attend together was a course with obstacles. The night before the race he thought about how to sabotage it to make sure he doesn't lose - once he was on the track he realised - that is exactly what his father was talking about.

Still afraid and now also confused he didn't take part in the race and quit his job alltogether. He earned enough bits anyway and seeing the truth in his fathers words he didn't want to corrupt himself any more and rather stop here and leave with his honor intact.

Time after being a race pony:

Eventually he felt terrible for just sitting around all day long and looked for a job, one he can enjoy, that wouldn't corrupt him. Maybe something where he can give others what he needed so much when he was young and he only got by a lucky coincidence?

Wind Shear became teacher at the flight school in Cloudsdale, in which his skills never found the right support. Now it was his task to do it better, and he promised himself he would.

The school was more than happy to get on of their former students as teacher and especially such a famous one.

In his time as teacher he changed his attitude to the better again. No more pressure on him to be the best, no more parents who he thought he had to impress, just his students who were looking up to him - the famous Wind Shear.

It was this time also when he met Nocturna. Seeing her ambition remembered him of himself, until she mentioned she wanted to be a Wonderbolt. Then the mare seemed more like a young version of his mother.

Not only supported he her wish to become an acrobatic flying entertainer, but he made sure she got the most difficult tasks in class and could show off during those. Teaching her modesty and never letting her fame take advantage of her was important to him, but he never really got to that. He feared she might not be ready for those lessons and he could destroy her ambition.

When she left Flight School she had learned more than most students could dream off, especially the ones from Wind Shear's school time. And the old stallion was glad he could be the supporting teacher he only had thanks to his mother.

They stayed in contact and even now, after Nocturna joined the notorious Shadowbolts she visits him once in a while.

Looking back at his life he had everything he ever wanted, a special somepony, a fulfilling job, a good friend, a glimpse of fame at school.

Sadly the latter didn't last long, the younger students didn't even recognize him anymore and if it weren't for their parents telling them who they are taught by they would probably call him too old to be a flight school teacher.

Now he feels the time's weight on his shoulders more and more every day - he is getting old and there is probably not much time left for him to enjoy, so he made the decision to teach one more year and then retire.

At least he can say he is happy today.

Character Summary:

Despite his efforts and accomplishments in the past Wind Shear doesn't consider them too important anymore except for himself. It doesn't really matter to him how he once was, the only thing that counts is how he is now.

Towards other ponies he always acts friendly, less the polite friendly way you would usually expect but more like a grandfather. He never had foals himself, so you might think he is making up for something (he is not). He is always focused on taking others seriously, no matter what age they are. You cannot call him a funny person at all, but a very respectful one.

In school when he is with his students you see him either smile or with a unclear expression sighing. Seeing all the young colts and fillies learn to fly fulfills him more than racing ever could, that's what causes the occasional smile. When he is sad it is either because one of his students has problems or he was reminded about his age.

It weighs much more on him than he wants to admit. To the outside he seems like a very successful and fulfilled old stallion, but in the insight he is sad he won't be there for his students much longer. His retirement was planned long ago and now it's coming closer and closer every day.

Nevertheless his reputation amongst the young ponies is very good. They love him for the effort he makes. You won't ever be left behind in his lessons. If you are a rather bad flyer he will try his best to make you as good as the other ones and if you stand out he will give you more difficult tasks to develop your talent further and avoid boredom. Especially young colts do stupid things if they are bored.

If somepony stands out he quickly gets high hopes for their future and not rarely he tries to stay in contact with those promising ponies to see them rise and shine. Sadly more often than not they don't rise and shine as much as he hopes for them. A few though do become something great and that always casts a smile on his face.

He hates to admit it, but good students tend to become his favourites and he has a hard time to not prefer them over others. Especially a mare like Nocturna who reminds him so much of his own mother can twist his mind and make him do silly things.

It's no surprise they both are still good friends.

Regarding his views of the world he is a bit unconventional. He would never ever admit it towards someone but he really pities unicorns and earth ponies for their inability to fly. Whenever he has "one of those moments" and he slobbers about how great flying is and how thankful they should be for this ability he is secretly pitying the other races.

If you ask him about his greatest fear it would be losing his ability to fly.

If you ask him about his greatest wish, he would certainly answer that he has no great wishes, he had a wonderful life with a fulfilling job, fame, bits and love. It isn't his time anymore.

So all in all when you first meet him you would probably describe him as a happy and friendly pony, not hesitating to tell a bit about himself and his past and quite active for his age.

Hi Scythe!

Normally, RP Helpers don't review an app until it's marked 'Ready', but since you specifically asked, allow me to offer my critique!

I REALLY love this app! It is not only well written, but very well organized!

You've gone to great detail to describe Wind Shear's history, personality and cutie mark story!

My opinion is, this is a terrific app!

Hey Mojo,

big thanks for reviewing my app before it is ready. I didn't expect someone would actually give me feedback but I am very glad you did. The formating style was given to me by flutterscotch, she always has great ideas for cosmetic improvments and I'm grateful she told me how to make it look organized.

Actually I didn't want to write so much on this character, but when I wrote down the story I had for him in my mind all along, it turned out to need a few more words to make him more than a stereotype. Since he is based on a stereotype (the old wise teacher with the long history like those martial arts teachers from movies like karate kid).

Welp, I just hope there aren't too many grammar/spelling mistakes, when I try to write more interesting sentences I often have trouble with grammar since english isn't my first language.
