Roleplay Type: World of Equestria

Name: Buzz, although, he is known to his good friends and ponies who have nearly heard of or met him as "The Bugmaster"

Sex: Male

Age: Colt (Older)

Species: Unicorn

Eye colour: Pitch Black

Coat: Tan. He doesn't normally wear clothes with the exception of an article he calls "The Widow Cloak" It's not a black garment for brooding though. It's a special cloak the simple colour of white woven from the silk of the infamous Black Widow Spider. Weight for weight, the silk of a Black Widow is stronger than steel! So this makes for some very effective (not to mention comfy!) protecting clothing. He doesn't have it on him at all times though, and will only bring it when prepared ahead of time.

Mane/Tail: He has a bright green mane that he lets grow perhaps a bit too long for a colt. At least his tail is normal. While his mane and tail look normal enough, he has the habit of letting his various bug friends inhabit and crawl inside it. At least he keeps a few ground rules about the matter, the first and foremost being "Within reason or unless told otherwise, keep out of sight to spectators"

Physique: Average, if anything a bit out of shape.

Residence: The Whitetail Woods

Occupation: Bugmaster! No I'm just kidding... Buzz actually runs a small business where he sells various bug themed wares. They can range from various nick-nacks like chinaware depicting pretty bugs on them. To consumables such as high quality honey and his personal favorite, tea and medicine made from ground up cicada shells.

Cutie Mark: A single black ant. It signifies the incredibly love, connection, and cooperation shared by him and all things arthropod.

It began when Buzz's father decided to bring Buzz with him to work at the local art museum he owned. Buzz was naturally very excited to see where his father went to work. His father however, couldn't share his son's enthusiasm. For you see, business had been on a sharp decline. This was due to a trio of infestations that had struck within the last two months. Firstly, a group of cockroaches had decided to of taken residence in his prized museum. As they became more noticeable, many of his fancy and proper clientele refused to visit a place filled with such filthy vermin. Secondly, an increasingly number of silverfish began to make them selves known. They began to eat away at his expensive paintings, damaging them and decreasing their value and quality every day. Thirdly and easily the worst of the three was a rather aggressive wasp’s nest on the roof of the establishment. They require no explanation as to how they would scare away customers.

Buzz's father has hired a number of exterminators, but they all had little luck solving the problem. Faced with certain bankruptcy, he figured that at least his son would enjoy the place, as it was filled with his favorite thing in all of Equestria. Though his father didn't mention any word of losing his job to him, Buzz soon realized the gravity of the issue when they arrived. He may have been young, but he was far from ignorant, and he knew of the hardships his family would face if this wasn't resolved soon. His father loved his museum just as much as Buzz loved the bugs that were apparently ruining it. Somepony had to do something, and Buzz was determined to fix everything!

He started by examining the cockroaches. Cockroaches in a restaurant made sense, but a museum? He allowed one to crawl on his hoof and held it up to his face. At that very moment, something sparked within Buzz. He had always harbored a respect and fascination with arthropods, but this was different. He could understand what this cockroach felt, what it wanted, what it thought even. What’s more is that this feeling was mutual. The insect could understand everything about Buzz that he could of it. When Buzz snapped out of his trance, he found that he and the cockroach he held had company. The room was filled with cockroaches, all the cockroaches in the building actually. They covered the floor, walls, and half of the ceiling. And Buzz could understand what every single one of them desired. Shelter. A place to live and call home is what they wanted. Without exchanging a word, Buzz and the cockroaches came to an agreement. They cleared a path so that Buzz could exit the room and followed suit. It was quite a sight, a single young colt leading an army of cockroaches at least a thousand strong. As he exited the building and roamed the streets, everypony nearby was speechless, his father included. Eventually Buzz reached his destination, the local dump. It is a stinky, unsavory place for any equine, but paradise for an insect such as a cockroach. The insects rushed into their new home, all of them thanking Buzz and wishing him well, just as he did for them. Buzz hurried on back to his father’s museum. One down, two to go.

Next were the silverfish. Buzz began to think and tried to remember why it was all the cockroaches would simply gather near him. It wasn’t long though, before silverfish began to crawl towards Buzz. Was he a bug magnet now? The colt was ecstatic by the very idea. But that was for later, as he still had a job to do. He stopped to listen to what they had to say. Food. All they wanted was a place with plenty of paper to eat. Buzz had an idea of what to do. There weren’t nearly as many silverfish as cockroaches, so to save time, Buzz beckoned them to climb on him. In an instant, they covered his entire body. He galloped out of the museum, taking the same route to the dump as before. It was much quicker this time around as he did not have to wait for them to crawl by themselves, and bugs can only go so fast. All the while, he drew just as much attention from other ponies as before, some fainting at the sight of a child covered in insects. When he reached his destination, the silverfish disembarked his body. The dump had plenty of thrown out paper, and as the silverfish preferred, it was quite often damp and moist. Buzz bid farewell to his friends and returned to his father’s workplace for the final job.

As he climbed the stairs and stepped foot on the roof, the wasps instantly greeted him. But unlike the many exterminators who were met with biting and stinging, the wasps would only fly around him in an agitated frenzy. The insects in question weren’t sure why they didn’t assault him immediately. There was something different about this pony. Nevertheless Buzz was terrified, and crouched to ground, not daring to move an inch. After awhile though, the loud buzzing subsided, and the wasps calmed down enough to the point where Buzz could feel at ease. With both parties thinking clearly, they communicated with each other in a language only they could hear. Seclusion. The wasps wanted to be left alone by ponies and didn’t know this spot would bring so much attention to their nest. Just like before, Buzz knew of a place he could take them, though it wasn’t the dump. He carefully placed the hive on his back and turned to face the stairs. The wasps stopped him though. They were in a hurry and had a different idea. Buzz loved this idea.

Meanwhile, Buzz’s father and museum staff were astounded. They couldn't find any trace of cockroaches or silverfish. His father had stepped outside and was talking about the irony of the situation with an employee of his. First the cockroaches and then the silverfish, at this rate he’ll have the, the… His father was suddenly filled with alarm. Cockroaches and Silverfish were one thing, but those wasps were dangerous! A swarm of them can severely injure a fully grown stallion, and a young colt? He shuddered at the thought. He was about to go inside to find his son and keep him from doing anything stupid before his employee pointed atop to the roof. There was Buzz standing on the ledge with a wasp’s nest of his back and the inhabitants of it on his back. His father and his employee were speechless. Then Buzz jumped.

His father wasted no time in positioning himself to catch and save his son. But he soon found there was no need. Buzz was hardly falling at all, descending as fast as a feather. The many wasps clung to his back, and were slowing his descent. As he gracefully touched ground and trotted off, all his father could do was stare, mouth wide hung open. Buzz made his third trip through town, with many spectating ponies marveling in awe as to how he wasn't being stung to a pulp. He reached his destination a local park, and searched out the most hidden corner he could find. He climbed a nearby tree and carefully wedged the nest between two branches. Once it was secure enough, the wasps parachuted him to the ground again and made hurried on back to the museum.

The sun was beginning to set now. When he arrived, his father and all of his staff were waiting for him. Buzz’s dad ran toward his son and embraced him in a heartfelt hug. Buzz had single hoofedly saved his father’s business! He asked Buzz if wanted to go out for ice cream, but it had been a long day for the young colt, and he merely wanted to go home to the rest of his family. His father agreed, and back to dismiss his staff for the rest of the night and lock up. When he returned to his son, Buzz was curled up on the ground and asleep. As he levitated him on to his back, he saw the last and greatest surprise of the day, Buzz’s cutie mark! He dared not wake his son though, as he was sure Buzz would much rather bounce around the house in excitement in the morning, once he had the energy to do so from a good night’s sleep.

History: Buzz was born in Trottingham into a family who leaned towards a more “proper” side. Bugs are definitely not what most ponies consider classy and while his family will always love him no matter what, his passion for arthropods can and has definitely led to some conflict. Aside from his parents, Buzz has two older twin sisters.

As Buzz discovered his love of bugs at a young age, his parents didn't pay it much mind at first, thinking it was only a phase. Any young colt would be interested in spiders and centipedes, right? However, they soon learned that Buzz was interested in more then just predatory bugs. He loved all of them. Ants, flies, beetles, moths… Why, he wouldn't even swat a mosquito away, instead just gently brushing it off as to make sure it wouldn't be harmed. They tried subtly steering him away from the matter by giving him books on other subjects such as cooking or music. But upon receiving these Buzz asked for books on insects and spiders. His parents bargained that if he read the books they gave him, they would give him books on bugs, hoping that he would lose interest after reading about more proper subjects. He gladly agreed, and for a week Buzz would sit on the couch for hours on end, reading the books given to him by his parents and not mentioning a word about bugs. His parents thought they had done it. That is, until he came to them inquiring that he was finished, and asked for bug books. They skeptical, asking him to talk to them about the subjects to know if he had really read them and went so far as to test him. Buzz proved stubborn however, and he could accurately and intelligently converse with his parents about Beethooven the 1st and cook a superb soup. They admitted defeat, realizing that nothing could deter their boy from his love of arthropods.

As a foal, one of Buzz’s favorite methods of play would be to dress up and act like various bugs. His older twin sisters found this adorable and gladly helped him construct various outfits. He would jump around the house dressed in green pretending to be a grasshopper one day and hide in small, dark places donned in brown posing as cockroach the next. Some of these charades were a bit more elaborate then others. For example, using rope, he had constructed a “spider web” out in the backyard that he would perch himself on when role playing as a spider. Another notable case is when he would strap beach balls to his hooves and float on the surface of water imitating a water strider. Whatever he was, every five minutes or so he would giddily exclaim saying whatever he was every five minutes. “I’m a cricket!” “I’m a centipede!” “I’m a bombardier beetle!” His sisters especially adored this part. Now most ponies would grow out of such silly behavior. Buzz didn't entirely though. Grown up, he definitely doesn't go around in public dressed as various bugs. However, every once in a while, when he is alone and certain nopony will see him, he will don his costumes and play, just as he did as a young and energetic foal. He considers this his greatest secret, and dreads the thought of somepony walking in on him in the middle of this “guilty pleasure”

Character Summary: The majority of Buzz’s life revolves around one thing and one thing only. Bugs. Insects, arachnids, centipedes and millipedes. Even snails, slugs, worms, and crustaceans. All of these creatures hold a very large and special place in Buzz’s heart. He’s not just fond of them, but very knowledgeable about them as well. All throughout his life, Buzz has been reading about and observing these beloved creatures. Very few actual entomologists can rival Buzz’s knowledge of arthropods.

For Buzz, bugs aren’t just an interest (Or obsession, as some would say) Bugs are his very special talent. He understands Bugs on a level so great that it would be impossible to entirely describe in words. He can easily communicate with them to learn their feelings and thoughts. An unspoken language heard and understood only by him and his multi-legged friends. He can tell the presence of bugs in an ever increasing radius around himself. Why, even his very presence seems to attract bugs, as you will seldom see Buzz walking without a butterfly or dragonfly trailing him.

Buzz and bugs don’t just adore each other, but help one another as well. There is nothing Buzz loves to do more then making his surroundings more “bug friendly” He can never eat a muffin without breaking off a piece and drop some crumbs next to a nearby ant hill. He also finds it hard to pass by a tree without rearranging the branches into a shape that’s easier for spiders to construct more effective webs. Likewise, Buzz will never have to pick up something he dropped if there are flying insects around to do it for him.

Bug related qualities aside, Buzz is a level headed and intelligent colt. Growing up, he would have many arguments about defending bugs against stubborn or closed minded ponies. Thanks to this, he has self trained himself to be great at debating. He is friendly and nice enough, but finds it hard to resist taking action when he see’s other ponies openly express hurtful or incorrect opinions on bugs. The most effective way to make him lose his cool though, is to step on and kill a bug right in front of him, fully knowing that he would hate the act with every fiber in his body.

Another thing Buzz has acquired while growing up, unbeknownst to him, is a yearning for romance. When you think of things that a girl might show disdain for, Bugs should come into mind fairly quickly. As such, Buzz has always gotten along fine with other colts but mares however, have a tendency to shy away from him.

Buzz’s life long dream and goal in life is to become the greatest entomologist every known! The Star Swirl the Bearded of bugs! He wants to discover and document brand new, never before seen species of arthropods and answer questions about bugs that have puzzled scientists for long before he was even born. So what better place to start then the Everfree Forest? A place where well more then half of wildlife as a whole is already unheard of. He spends much of his time there, observing and taking notes on various bugs. It is a dangerous place to be sure, but Buzz feels no fear. If he is ever in danger, he knows that bugs from around, above, and below, will rush to his aid, just as he would do for them should they ever be in trouble.

It looks good so far! I'm not too sure about the whole sharing of thoughts with bugs story though. Maybe you could have him leave a trail of food to the dump to get rid of the roaches? That would suggest Bugmaster understands insects on a fundamental level to the point that he can use non-lethal means to take care of them, at which point he'd get his cutie mark? Remember you want this character to be like one you'd see right out of Friendship is Magic. I love his design so far and he's very close to something that would make a fantastic, entertaining character to interact with. I'd certainly want to play with him in the game. This just needs a few more details and bits about his personality, finish filling out the rest of the application fields, and maybe expand on his personality a bit. He's definitely you in pony form, so this should be easy to finish up! Fantastic work so far! :)

I'm really glad your liking this so far Rosewind! Now that you pointed it out I definitely worded the bug connection thing wrong. It's not really a sharing of thoughts. They would be telepathy, and Buzz is definitely no psychic. Bugs don't really make any sounds, so when he talks to them, it's like an unspoken language that only he and bugs comprehend.

I'll make some changes, mainly taking out Buzz's dialog and see if it looks any better.

So... He is the Fluttershy of arthropods...

So... He is the Fluttershy of arthropods...

Yeah, pretty much. However, I daresay that he understands bugs even better then Fluttershy, being the animal pony she is. Consequently, he's actually a little distant and clumsy with other animals. Especially birds. I was going to save this for the character summery but I'm glad you pointed it out because I wanted to address it individually at some point. That won't be a problem, will it?

Also added a history which I may edit in the future.

Alright, I added the (Probably) finishing touches! Now I know that roleplayers are discouraged from choosing Ponyville as a place of residence, but I've never made a character, Mane RP or otherwise, who specifically lived there. If I could have any single one of them able to, it would definitely be Buzz.

Anyways, I'll leave this as "WIP" just a little longer to listen to any comments anypony might have on it as a whole. ;)

Why not Whitetail Woods on the side of Ponyville? I think that is the closest you can get to Ponyville without actually being considered in Ponyville. I say this, because as far as I know, Ponyville is still in housing crisis and I'm not sure if "On the outskirts" will be enough :P

That doesn't sound like a bad back up plan at all, but I'd like to hear Rosewind's thoughts before changing anything. If she thinks otherwise, then Whitetail Woods it is.

Well, now that I'm officially a RP helper, it is my pleasure to make an official review of Buzz the Bugmaster!

First, as much as it pains me to say, I've checked with the RPHS hive, and Ponyville is still not really a place they are willing to give the OK on. So, I'd go with the back-up plan of the Whitetail woods. And think of it this way! Far more buggy friends there than in Ponyville! :D

Next...that is one of the most detailed cutie mark stories I've ever seen! And I figure if Fluttershy can communicate with animals, why not another pony do the same with arthropods? (And technically Fluttershy has some degree of communication with insects, I mean we did see that wasp in the Find a Pet song)

The history, likewise is fantastic. Normally I'd say he needs a bit more detail about friends and such, but he is still a colt! So that is fine to me. There is just one issue with spelling... You say "foul" on a constant basis... I believe the word you are looking for is "foal." Other than that, as I said, fantastic!

And honestly I don't really have much to say about the Character Summary either... Everything is covered and detailed. I got a good feel of your pony and how he interacts with others.

So, overall a fantastic app save some minor spelling errors and the minor issue of residence! Both easily remedied!

I can't wait to see you in the game!

I'm loving how far (and detailed) this application has come. I personally would like to RP with the Bugmaster.

With that said, I support Swirly's feedback, and think Whitetail Woods would be a better choice of residence, if not for the sheer variety of insects to be found there!

Fixed! Even though you two are the only ones who have commented, (With the exception of Rainboom) I'm very pleased that you both think so highly of this app! I hope your not being biased because of the influential love of bugs I seem to have given you. ;)
