Colt of Darkness (Open)

Recommended Posts

Moonstone sat on the edge of the Everfree Forest. He was hiding up in a tree, his grey coat rough and matted, his darker grey mane dirty. He watched the ponies on the edge of Ponyville, curious. He had lived in the Everfree all his life, and so had had to learn how to survive. Being a unicorn in this situation, he had to learn magic fast, and learn it well. This gave him magical abilities beyond most adult unicorns, despite him being only a young adolescent. He had lived alone, deep in the forest, far from any other ponies. As far as he knew, he was the only one of his kind. He had been alone for as long as he can remember, and had been in the forest since Damara knows when. Damara was a god, somepony that Moonstone had come up with when he was just a foal, trying to make sense of the world. Since then, he had learned, and he knew better now than to believe in spirits or gods, but Damara always stayed with him anyway. Not that he believed she controlled anything, or was even real. She was just a sort of quasi-omnipotent imaginary friend. Until recently, when a shortage of game in his section of the woods forced him to move and explore, he had thought the forest was the world, and he was it's lone inhabitant. But here he was, sitting in a tree at the edge of a forest he had thought infinite, staring at other creatures like him, though in different colours. They were talking. He was the only creature in the forest capable of speech. Maybe he could talk to one of them? No, he squelched that thought. Curiosity had gotten him in trouble before, and he was extremely wary of new places, new creatures. Besides, these creatures werent like him. They had these strange marks on their flanks, and some of them were missing their horns. There were a couple who even had wings, like birds. They couldnt be like him. But still, they intrigued him...

((That's actually what I was wanting to happen! :) haha you smart person you.))

Light making his usual rounds around Ponyville as usual.

But this time was different. He found himself near the Everfree forest. Personally he hated that forest. But then again he loved it. He had a love hate relationship with the forest. He saw many other ponies around that were conversing with each other. A few ponies waves hello to Light and he waved hello back.

He loved nice and friendly ponies. A few ponies trotted up to him and carried on a little conversation with him. They all laughed and smiled and had a good little time. But the ponies bid their farewells and left. Some ponies still wondered why a prince lived in Pony ille. Light hated when ponies called him Prince. It made him feel like they were putting him on a pedestal above them. But Light was not better than any other pony. The only thing different about him was he was an Alicorn. An alicorn that was horrible at magic. Light fluttered his wings a bit and gazed off into the forest. He sat down and kept staring. He heard strange animal noises from the forest. He had no idea what made the noises but he was glad he couldn't see it.

Light glanced around some more. He looked up in a tree and could have swore he was a little colt. Light focused his eyes on the tree but the image just got harder to see. He figured it was his eyes and mind playing tricks on him again. He sighed and then looked elsewhere at the forest. Every now and then he took a quick glance at the same tree that he thought had the colt in it.

Moonstone kept watching everypony, when suddenly, the most peculiar creature came into view. He was obviously male. Living in the forest, having to identify creatures at a glance, usually without the best lighting, Moonstone became very good at making distinctions like that. But this pony had a horn and wings. He scooted a little closer to the edge of the tree, trying to get a better look. When he saw the creature look into the forest, he cast an illusion spell, blurring his outline. It wasnt as good as full invisibility, but Moon hadnt learned how to do that quite yet. He wasnt sure it was even possible... The winged unicorn sat in front of the forest. What was he looking for? Moonstone dropped the spell and backed farther into the tree, then slowly climbed down, silently landing on the ground. He moved through the shadows, keeping an eye on the alicorn.

Light stopped moving when he heard a crunch of twigs and leaves. His first thought was a giant predator was going to come out and grab him. But the predator didn't. So Light dropped that thought. Light started to scan the forest ground for whatever made the noise.

He thought for a second that he saw a pair of eyes looking back at him. But he shook his head and thought to himself "Light you're crazy. Nothing is looking at you."

Light took a deep breath and kept staring at the forest. He kept his head on the forest but started to pace around. He then used one of the only spells he knew, levitation, and used his magic to move a few branches around. He scanned the forest and saw nothing.

Light sighed again and said, "Hello? Anypony..or thing out there?". Light held his breath for a second. He hoped something would reply but then again he didn't know if he wanted whatever the creature was to reply.

Moonstone watched the stallion. He determined that the creatures were similar enough to him that the words he somehow knew were used for ponies applied. Then he noticed something. The stallion was scared. Despite being easily twice his siye, the stallion of Moonstone. Moonstone desided to play with the stallion. He picked up a stick and sent it flying towards the stallion.

In the sky above,a White Pegasus mare lazily flew around. While she was meant to be practising her stunts, she didn't feel like it. Instead, she sat on a cloud and watched the Everfree forest.

The forest had always fanisinated Lighting, the danger, the chaos. It gave her a mini thrill. She glanced down, spotting somepony near the enterance of the forest. Frowning at why anypony would actually Enter the forest, she hopped off the cloud, and started to circle. She was curious, but didn't want to risk getting injured for the sake of some random pony entering the forest alone. While they did look slightly familar, she couldn't remember where from

Light jumped back at bit when the creature replied by throwing a stick at him. He dodged the stick and then stared at it on the ground. He let out a big sigh and then said sarcastically, "Oh yeah..real funny.". He laughed and then kept staring at the forest. He was about to give up on the forest and the creature. But he decided not to give up. He started to move closer to forest but didn't step inside the forest. He continued to glare at the forst and looked around in all directions.

The stallion replied sarcastically. Moonstone was surprised. The creatures spoke the same language as him... He didnt quite remember learning to talk. It was just something he knew how to do. He broke out of his confusion when the stallion began walking towards the forest. Moonstone had mixed feelings. He wanted to find out more about these creatures, but he felt the need to protect his forest, and himself. After a moment, he decided the potential risk of loosing his life, of inviting harmful creatures into the forest did not justify his curiosity. Using magic to amplify and alter his voice, he let out a roar, deeper and more gutteral than a manticore, more piercing than a cockatrice, more terrifying than a hydra. It was a trick he had learned to scare away predetors. Whenever he entered a new area, he would let out this roar, sending it in all directions. This time, he directed it towards the stallion. Anypony else would hear nothing more than a dull growl.

Light jumped back even further this time.

He heard a growl of all growls. He knew what a manticore growled like an he knew what other horrible creatures growled like but he had never heard anything like this. He moved back again and dug his hooves in the ground.

Then Light had an idea. He wasn't going to yell at the creature, mainly because he was scared it was a cockatrice and it would turn him to stone, but he would try to get the creature to come out. He just wanted to see the creature.

He approached the forest again and did his hooves in the ground.

He stood tall and said, "Whatever you are. I am not here to hurt you. I am not. Not. Here to hurt you."

He felt weird talking to a forest. He had an idea that that maybe there was no creature...maybe it was all in his head? No. He knew something was out there. He wanted to know what it was.

So he stayed his ground and stood tall.

This stallion was persistant. He claimed to hot be there to hurt him... Moonstone sat dead still. Maybe... His horn glowed visibly, since he was no longer supressing its glow. He had learned to do this in order to stay hidden when hunting, but it resulted in a less powerful spell. His horn glowed, giving away his position directly in front of the stallion. He was charging a light spell, going to reveal himself, but changed his mind. He diverted the energy through the magical channels in his mind and body, diverting the power to another spell. A wave of force expanded from his horn, pushing trees and shrubs out of the way, creating a divet in the edge of the forest. When the leaves and dust settled, there was a tunnel that led into the forest. The tunnel was lit by unseen lights, and Moonstone was nowhere to be seen.

Light closed his eyes when he felt the forced create the divet in the forest. When he opened his eyes he saw a big pathway created in the forest. Light used his magic to create light to light the path. He stepped closer to the tunnel. Whatever made this tunnel...

Light thought for a moment that the creature wanted to see him and that was why it made the tunnel. Light stepped one hoof in the tunnel and said quietly, "Well alright then."

He stated at the tunnel and took a deep breath.

Then Light started to trot down the tunnel. He was lighting his way through the tunnel.

Light stopped. He felt a presence around him.

He moved his head around and flashed light in a few places. He felt like he was being followed.

He turned in circles not really paying attention. He kept his eyes open and said, "Hello? Anypony..or thing there?". He looked around again.

Moonstone stopped when Light began moving the light. He swiftly dodged those luminous blades, staying out of sight. This time, Moonstone decided to answer. "What are you?" He said, throwing his voice to seem to be coming from farther down the tunnel.

Light stopped moving and looked down the tunnel.

He had no idea where the voices came from. It frightened him a little bit but he was actually happy the voice replied to him.

Light chuckled very slightly and said, "I am..a pony. My name is Light Harmony. I am an alicorn.". He started to look around again. He dimmed his light and said, "What are you?"

"You are... A pony, you?" The voice said, confused. Could this, this thing so different from him, really be the same? All the animals that Moonstone hunted usually looked about the same. So he assumed that, if he were to meet another pony, it would look like him...

((I didn't even see Shadowbolt's post :( I'm sorry haha))

Light heard the voice ask if I was a pony. Light chuckeld again slightly and said, "Yes. I am a pony."

He scuffed his hoofs on the ground. He looked around the tunnel again and shivered a bit. He scanned around again and said, "Would you care to..show yourself?". He smiled slightly and hoped the creature would show themselves.

Moonstone couldnt believe it. Another pony! He was so excited! But then a feeling crept in... He suddenly felt distrust for the pony. It wasnt anything based on logic or reason. It felt like an instinct, like a memory forgotten, but still learned from. Then it disappeared. The feeling just went away. "I... I dont know, me!" The sound of somepony running could be heard, moving down the tunnel.

Light had a confused look on his face. "You don't know..you? What?". He looked around the tunnel. He had no idea what the creature was.

The feeling of it being a creature that wanted to eat him came back in his mind. Then that feeling went away and was replaced by the thought of being turned to stone by a cockatrice. Still Light shook of the thought. He kept looking around. He was determined to find this creature.

He heard the sound of a pony trotting down the tunnel

Moonstone ran, crying, alongside the tunnel. Images were pouring through his mind. Ponies cowering in fear. Ponies fighting against a wave of shadows. Moonstone was scared. He was scared because he didnt know what was happening to him. Tears blured his vision, and he accidentally turned into the tunnel. He tripped and fell, rolling along the tunnel until he came to a stop. A detached part of him knew the other pony saw him, and Moonstone felt ashamed. He knew what he looked like. A scared foal with a dirty mane, crying in a ball. It wasnt the dirt that bothered him, he had lived with dirt all his life. It was the crying. The last time he had cried was when a manticore had ripped apart his favorite bird. Moonstone had always loved the birds, and envied their ability to fly, to go beyond the forest. They had motivated him to learn self-levitation. An when that manticore tore into that beautiful crane, Moonstone had cried, much like he was now. A crumpled ball of sobbing colt.

Light had an unspeakable expression on his face. The creature was actually a little colt!

Light chuckled very slightly but he stopped instantly. The colt was crying.

The colt was dirty and had a dirty mane and coat.

Light quickly kneeled down to the colt and said, "Hey hey hey! What's wrong?!". He picked up the colt's head with his hoof. He had an expression of great compassion on his face. He wanted to help this colt.
